This is a book that one comes back to.
For this reader, I simply wanted to make a pass with some highlights and notes. I’ll spare you the boring detail of my plans for artistry, but suffice it to say, I’ll be working through the challenges with a coach partner soon.
My sense after reading this book is that, as one discovers in a meditation practice over years, the tools for artistry are already present.
I mostly just need to relax my grip a little and let them arise. To the extent that there’s efforting warranted on my part? It’s there, it’s lighter than the pressure of a down feather on fine China, and it could give rise to true artistry if I’ll allow it.
When working with others to improve their performance or any other aspect of their personal and professional lives, coaches are often called upon to identify processes and practices, to find solutions, to take action on strategies. The most effective coaches take the time to do the work themselves, the work of improving oneself to serve others. As an organizational coach, I appreciated the reminders to create space for reflexive practices of inquiry and contemplation. The very human aspect of coaching lies in humble, vulnerable, and honest conversations that yield great insights into the whys and hows of our thoughts and action, The authors offer practical strategies for improving the art of inquiry and conversation, to develop applicable solutions in partnership with the client.
I have just finished my first reading of The Human Behind the Coach. I super recommend it if you think what you need at this moment is not so much about techniques or trainings but exploring your own doing and being with real clients (or thinkers).
