Renting Love

Rent a Bodyguard

Rate this book
He’s big, he’s broody, and he’s the best mistake she’s ever made.

I’m not crazy, I’m just thoroughly watched. At least, that’s what I tell the police and the private investigator who both gave me the "bless your heart" look before taking my money and finding absolutely nothing.

With a phantom stalker on my heels and my sanity hitting room temperature, I did the only logical thing: I went to the coffee shop to scout for a human shield.

Then I saw him… Bane.

He’s not just a man. He’s a terrifyingly gorgeous mountain of muscle who looks like he eats bad guys for breakfast and skips the toast. Naturally, I did what any desperate, sleep-deprived woman would do—I offered him a job as my live-in bodyguard.

I expected a professional deterrent. I didn't expect a broody giant who takes "monitoring my vitals" to a heart-shattering level. Now I’m sharing my space with a man who could snap a phone book in half but handles me like I’m made of glass.

Between the invisible creeper outside and the very visible, very shirtless distraction in my guest room, I’m starting to wonder: is Bane here to save my life, or am I just in danger of falling for the help?

A darkly hilarious, obsessively steamy rom-com where the bodyguard with a dark secret falls hardest, the sweet girl gets stalked, and happily-ever-after comes with an unexpected twist.

I usually love Darcy Rose's books, this was not one of those.
It was so stupid, the plot wasn't consistent.

Dakota needs protection, she thinks she's been stalked, so she sees a big man, Bane, in a coffee, and she invites him to her house to be her bodyguard?
Really?

Wow, this book took insta-love to another level.

I want the time I wasted on this book back.

My insomniac mind is kicking my ass for choosing to read this, when I could be reading something far more enjoyable.

I did not sign up for extra spice; I just wanted a solid plot and for her to actually get to know him before she falls on his dick.

What do you do when you have a gut feeling someone's watching/stalking you, but no concrete proof? You ask a massive stranger you stumble into at the coffee shop to be your bodyguard OF COURSE.

Fortunately for Dakota, Bane is a good guy at heart (despite his regular job). Or, maybe he's just a good guy to Dakota. Regardless, while he doesn't exactly believe she's being stalked when she first approaches him, he goes with her to her place to take a look. He's kinda entranced by the sweet, sunny, clearly exhausted woman and he figures since he's, like, ten times bigger than her, he can beat feet if she's really luring him in for nefarious purposes.

Except...it looks like Dakota really does have a stalker and that sends all Bane's protective instincts into overdrive. Soon he's stalker-proofing her apartment and doing all the things a good bodyguard should do (including, but not limited to getting very hands on with her body) all while trying to keep her in the dark about his other job. You know, the one where he takes contracts to end people.

I must say I'm enjoying this series. Hitmen who find their special someone and do whatever needs to be done to keep them safe and happy is my thing, I guess. *thumbs up*

Dakota has a stalker and she's tired of being ignored by the police, tired of being patronized by her PI until the moment he got his money... just plain tired. And in that exhaustion she decides to trust the mountain of a man standing in line at her local coffee shop and hire him as her bodyguard. Bane doesn't need the job, but something about this innocent slightly crazy woman brings out his protective instincts. And the more time he spends with her, the less he wants the job to be over. But he's hiding a big secret, one he knows she'll never accept.
Since this is a novella, I can accept the insta-love that I normally dislike. What got me was Dakota's total naivete, her terror and then complete acceptance after Bane decides she "needs a lesson". This one was short and spicy, but I think I liked Rent a Hitman a little better.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed in this review are completely my own

4.5 stars!!

I think I liked this even more than the first book in the "Renting Love" companion series, simply because Bane was all set on protecting Dakota from the very start.
Of course the love story and the feeling is developing very quickly again and Dakota trusts Bane immediately - after all this is a novella/short story with an instant attraction trope -, but I never seem to mind with Darcy's books, because the writing style is so good and the characters were just very lovable!

The only critique I have is that I would've liked a little more "showdown feeling" with the stalker situation. I guess Bane simply was too effective in that situation haha
Other than that though I was really able to let myself fall into the story. 🥰🥰 I want mooooore ❤️❤️

Rent a Bodyguard is steamy standalone novel with no cheating or cliffhanger and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. A fast paced, quick read steamy novella. This is Dakota and Bane story which is told from a dual point of view. An insta-love story, insta-everything, lust-at-first-sight, bodyguard romance, taboo, opposite attracts story, age gap trope story, stalker trope, short and spicy story with fear, danger, violence, secrets, lie by omission, deception, acceptance, mystery, forgiveness, romantic suspense, madness, attack, obsession, possessiveness, lite action, submission, spanking, dominance, consensual intense rough sex, surprise pregnancy, steam, passion protector story, insecurities, and love.
Dakota is a blogger of pop culture, entertainment trends and fashion. She's also a rich trust fund baby with no friends and her parents doesn't bother with her. They spends their time traveling around the world. She suffers from paranoia, but knows that someone as been watching her or following her around for the past months. She goes to cops but they told her that they couldn't do anything about it. She has even hired a private investigator but all he wanted was her money and tells her everything was fine. She was desperate and had reach her limit after she noticed that there was a hand print on her bedroom window that leads to the fire escape; as well as some over thrown plants by her office window. From then on she has not gotten little to no sleep but a few minutes at a time in the daytime and stay up watching for the perpetrator. One day she went out to the coffee shop to get a latte when she almost fell because of her lack of sleep when a stranger caught her from falling.
The first thing that she noticed how safe she felt in his arms, and the second thing was how big and hard like a brick wall he was. She knew what she was doing was crazy but she ran out the coffee shop and flag down the stranger. No one had taken her seriously about being followed so she thought why not hired a bodyguard as big as this man she knows that one would ever think about messing with him. She proposition him about the job which he thought that she must be a crazy person, because who asks a complete stranger to be their bodyguard when she doesn't know the first thing about him, and if she did she would run the other way, so she had to be crazy. He has never been anyone protector before he has always been an enforcer, the muscle, an unspoken threat. People look at him and doesn't see a man who will save their life. All they see is a man who's going to hurt them. He decided to humor her and go back with her to her apartment that's the least he could do and if for nothing else he could at least get some sex out of it.
However, when he got to her apartment and checked out her surroundings he realized that she wasn't crazy after all but indeed had a valid reason to be afraid. He could tell that her stalker was a man base on his hand print on her window. He decided to help her but he also wanted to spank some sense into her for letting a perfect stranger into her home and giving all the information about herself. However, it back fired on him him after he got angry with her. He scare her into an almost panic attack. He apologized and had her sit in his lap and soothe her until she fell asleep because the poor thing had not have any real sleep in months. However, the more she moved in her sleep on his lap, she somehow managed to aroused him until he had to wake her up because he can hold his control but so much. They were already attracted to each other and one kiss ignite the fire in her and she gave him her virginity something that she had always fantasize about doing. From then on it was a full blown sexual session for them daily, and after being there for three days and they got set into a routine he thought that maybe she was imaging things until he saw the disturbance of her plant from someone standing on them.
They made love before she even knew his name. Bane his handsome, muscle bound mountain of a man who's a hitman for the highest bidder. One night they were just getting ready to make love and she was in the bed enticing him to hurry up and join her before she falls asleep. He was brushing his teeth in the bathroom when he heard her scream. He rushed out to find a man standing over her bed menacing and angry flexing his hands. He quickly snap his neck then call his clean up crew to get rid of the body and evidence. She was so shaken from what she saw and the fact that he actually killed the man that he no choice but to confess his profession as a hitman. He took her to his home until the guys were finished with hers but she could not be around so she called a Uber and went to her parents home. However, her old childhood home was empty and loveless. When she called both of her parents phone no one answered until she text and told them that they had caught the man that was following and all her dad did was texted back okay. It was in that moment she realized that she had made an error leaving Bane because they hadn't known each other for long time but she felt more loved and care for by him than her parents. She decided to go back to his home to tell him. But he was already outside her parents house because he had followed her home to make sure that she was alright. Bane never thought that he deserved anything and was glad that she had came into his life and can not live without her. The two embarked on a relationship where he felt great coming home to someone every night and they couldn't keep their hands off each other. It was a great little story.

I didn’t really like this, but I’m not a contemporary girl. Although yes there was talk of killing and a singular killing this was very contemporary. The way their relationship was. How they talked to each other, their sex. All very vanilla and felt extremely wattpad/halmark-y. If you’re looking for a “cute” novella as a vanilla reader this is for you.

*Rent a Bodyguard* by Darcy Rose sounds like such a fun, chaotic, steamy, and suspenseful romance. The setup alone already has me interested because it has so many tropes I love — bodyguard x client, forced proximity, protective hero, romantic suspense, a heroine in danger, and a broody MMC who clearly does not know what he is walking into emotionally.

The story follows a woman who is convinced she is being watched, but no one seems to fully believe her. The police and private investigator both come up with nothing, and instead of feeling safer, she feels like she is slowly losing her mind. I already feel for her because there is something so scary about knowing something is wrong but having everyone around you treat it like maybe you are overthinking. That kind of suspense always pulls me in.

So what does she do? She goes to a coffee shop and tries to find herself a human shield.

Honestly, that part already sounds so funny in the best way. I love when a book can mix danger and comedy without making the suspense feel weak. The idea of her seeing Bane, this huge, terrifying, broody man who looks like he could scare off danger just by existing, and then deciding to hire him as her live-in bodyguard is exactly the kind of chaotic romance setup I enjoy.

And Bane sounds like the kind of hero I know I usually fall for in books. Big, broody, protective, intimidating to everyone else, but gentle with the heroine? Yes. There is something so swoony about a man who looks dangerous but handles the woman he is protecting like she is precious. That soft-with-her energy will always get me.

I also love that this does not sound like a simple bodyguard arrangement. She expects someone professional who can keep the danger away, but instead she gets a man who starts caring in ways that feel deeper than the job. The “monitoring my vitals” line makes it sound like he becomes emotionally invested fast, even if he tries to hide it behind all that broody seriousness.

The forced proximity also sounds so good. A live-in bodyguard means they are constantly around each other, sharing space, trying to keep boundaries, and probably failing very badly. Add a stalker situation outside and a very distracting man inside the house, and I already know the tension is going to be delicious.

What makes this especially fun is the contrast between the danger and the humor. The blurb gives dark rom-com energy, but with suspense underneath. It sounds like the kind of book where I would be giggling one moment and then stressed the next because there is still a real threat in the background.

I also love the idea that Bane has a dark secret. That gives him more depth than just “hot bodyguard.” It makes me curious about what he is hiding, what made him the way he is, and why he is so protective. I always enjoy romantic suspense when both the danger and the romance slowly uncover more about the characters.

Overall, *Rent a Bodyguard* sounds like a darkly hilarious, steamy, protective romance with exactly the kind of bodyguard energy I love. It has the stalker suspense, the forced proximity, the broody protector, the sweet girl in danger, the “he falls hardest” feeling, and the kind of chemistry that makes it impossible for the arrangement to stay professional.

If you love bodyguard romances, protective MMCs, forced proximity, romantic suspense, dark rom-com chaos, and heroes who are terrifying to everyone else but careful with the heroine, this sounds like such a fun one to pick up.

Sometimes the scariest thing isn’t the danger outside your door… it’s how quickly someone can become your safe place.

Rent A Bodyguard by Darcy Rose is a fast, addictive romance that blends tension, humor, and heat into a story you’ll fly through in one sitting—and immediately wish there was more.

Dakota knows something is wrong.

The shadows that linger too long. The feeling of being watched. The evidence no one else seems to see. Police dismiss her. A private investigator takes her money and shrugs it off. And with every sleepless night, her fear grows louder—and lonelier.

So she does something completely irrational.

She hires a stranger.

Enter Bane.

He’s massive. Intimidating. The kind of man who looks like trouble wrapped in muscle and shadows. Definitely not the kind of man you invite into your home… unless you’re desperate enough to need a protector more than you fear the unknown.

At first, even he thinks she’s imagining things.

Until he steps into her world—and realizes she isn’t crazy at all.

What follows is a gripping mix of suspense and connection as Bane steps into a role he’s never played before: not the threat… but the shield. And the way he protects Dakota? Fierce, unwavering, and unexpectedly tender.

Because beneath his rough edges is a man who’s never been anyone’s safe place before.

And Dakota?

She’s never had anyone choose her the way he does.

Their relationship moves fast—intense, consuming, and impossible to ignore—but what makes it compelling is the emotional core underneath it all. Dakota’s vulnerability, her isolation, and her desperate need to be believed hit hard. And Bane’s transformation from detached enforcer to deeply invested protector adds a powerful layer to their story.

✨ Tropes to love:

Bodyguard romance
Opposites attract
Touch her and face the consequences energy
Stalker / suspense elements
“He falls hard” protector
Found safety in each other
Fast-paced, high-heat connection

There’s also a surprising softness woven through the chaos—the quiet moments where Dakota finally feels safe enough to sleep, where Bane realizes he wants more than the life he’s always known. Those moments ground the story and make the intensity feel earned.

This is a romance that doesn’t pretend to be slow or subtle—it leans fully into the drama, the danger, and the passion. And somehow, in the middle of all that, it still delivers a satisfying emotional payoff.

If you’re in the mood for something quick, steamy, a little chaotic, and full of protective “mine” energy, Rent A Bodyguard is a wild ride worth taking.

I am voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.

Dakota looks to have a life that most people would dream of, a trust fund baby with an apartment that most people would trade anything to have, she is a popular blogger and will never want for money, but what she doesn’t have is any love, her parents barely acknowledge her existence and above all else she is lonely. It has been days since she has slept, convinced that she is being watched and followed to the point that she is barely leaving her apartment in case she is followed but her need for coffee wins out this one day and it turns into a day that changes her life. Meeting Bane she finally feels that someone is listening to her and her connection to him is something that she has never experienced before. But who is Bane really why is he so willing to help her when no one else cares, can she trust him with her life and her heart?

Bane had no idea that the day he walked into a local coffee house would be a day that would change everything, approached by Dakota who seems to trust him with secrets that she has no right to he soon learns that she has no one looking out for her, a private investigator who seems to have taken her money and run, police who believe that she is delusional and then parents that have no interest in her at all. So when she invites him back to her apartment he decides that she needs to learn a lesson about letting strangers into her life and doesn’t just scare her but terrifies her beyond anything he has ever experienced before and the urge to keep her safe from anything ever again takes control, but Bane is not the man that she thinks that he is and is sure that when she discovers the truth that she will never want him. Will his past as a hitman destroy his present or will Dakota trust his love for her is real and see past the man he was?

I loved this there was such chemistry between the characters that I was worried that my kindle was going to melt. The story had me invested and I adored Dakota and just wanted to give her the biggest hug. I highly recommend this book for a short steamy read that keeps you invested from the very start 5* Read.

Dakota is struggling she hasn’t slept in days, she’s not eating since her appetite has vanished, and she is barely functioning all because someone is stalking her. She’s is frantic for help but no one so far hasn’t believed her and she is trying to live her life but having to constantly look over her shoulders keeps her from going out in public too much until she goes for coffee and things start to change. When a frantic woman runs into Bane with stars in her eyes he isn’t sure if she’s crazy, paranoid, or genuinely needs help but there is something about her that tugs at his heart. When Dakota asks for Bane’s help she doesn’t think the consequences through by inviting a stranger into her life and home and Bane shows her how dangerous it is, but when she is absolutely terrified he knows he has to help this woman. The steam and attraction between them are off the charts making this a insta kind of love for them, but Bane has a big secret that he knows will make Dakota run, but when it comes down to saving her life will she see Bane is the one that keeps her safe? A quick and steamy read that makes you wish you had a lot more time with these characters but you’ll love the time you do have.

Cute story, listed as a dark rom com, but it’s cutesy enough to be a shady rom com. I found myself alternatively kicking my feet in glee and screaming at FMC Dakota for the choices she makes. She’s the little sister that I’m saying “omg I wish you wouldn’t, but if you’re going to, then you might as well get it, girl.”.

Short but addictive slightly different so hang on you won’t put it down until the last page has been turned. Dakota has a stalker scared unsure what to do since she has reported it to the police yet they didn’t take it seriously, hired a PI but even he treated her like a joke or at least until she paid him she was so exhausted and the mountain man seems like the best bet everyone else has failed her so she offered to hire him as her bodyguard. Bane sexy as all get out now bodyguard but not a bodyguard really but he couldn’t walk away from the innocent women although she is a little crazy, and she brings something out in him protective instincts so he will ensure she stays safe. The magnetic pull was there from the moment they met and the more they are around each other the more he understand how much danger she really is in and how much he is willing to put out there to ensure her protection, her safety but will he keep her safe, will they figure out who her stalker is also why he is stalker her, can they find freedom to be together and with it happiness?

You had me at ferrets.

Dakota felt like she was being stalked, but she had no proof. She had gone to the police; she'd even hired a private investigator, and both came off as very patronizing. At this point, she's barely sleeping, only a few minutes at a time, and is scared to leave her apartment. She works up the nerve to go to the coffee shop down the street, but she's struggling and regretting her choice to go out in public. When she goes up to the counter to grab her coffee, she loses her balance and thinks she's going to fall, but a mountain of a man stops her. For whatever reason, she feels instantaneously safe around this person. So when he leaves the coffee shop, she chases him down and offers him a job as her bodyguard. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but there was a quote from it that had tears running down my face I was laughing so hard.

"The girl is crazy; she has to be. Then again, I once watched a guy in a suit and a tie ask a pigeon for directions, so I've seen worse.".

Bane is all in for the pink haired young woman.

Rent A Bodyguard is an OTT, smexy hot story about Dakota and Bane. She is a young woman who lives in the city and runs a blog. She is sure she is being watched, stalked, as outside her apartment her flowers pots are moved and other things are happening. One day Dakota goes to her favorite coffee shop and bumps into a mountain of a man, Bane. He gives her a sense of protection and safety and so she asks him to be her bodyguard. Bane agrees, but at the same time thinks she is crazy. When he discovers that she is actually be stalked his protectiveness comes out in full force and he will burn the city down to keep her safe. The thing is that both are hiding some secrets and preconceptions may change quickly once they really get to know each other.
This was an entertaining short story that packs a lot of heat, and story in a small package.

Dakota is being watched. No one believes her. The police don’t, the PI she hired doesn’t and her parents don’t care enough to be concerned. She is at her wits end, physically and mentally exhausted, she literally stumbles into Bane.
He is a huge alpha male. No one would dare mess with her with him around. She asks if he will be her bodyguard.
Bane realizes how desperate Dakota is. Trusting a complete stranger. He is not a good man, he is not someone she should trust but he will protect her.
Bane is hot, tattooed, possessive and protective. Dakota is innocent, feels unloved, scared and vulnerable. Can she trust Bane? Everything in her tells her she can. This was a great short read. The chemistry and steam is 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ in this one.

Something is off, but Dakota can't figure out why. For the last few months she has felt like she was being watched even though there is no one around. She has become so paranoid that when the barista asks for her name she freezes and gives him a fake name.

When a drink order is called it takes her a second to remember it is the name she made up and she would have landed on her face if not for the man who caught her. When she looks up at the massive man she feels safe for the first time in a while.

Then her tired mind clicks... no one would mess with a man that size so she runs after him and asks if he will be her bodyguard.

I love this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This may be a short story, but it packs a ton of heat within the pages. Dakota hired Bane to be her bodyguard but got more than she was expecting. Highly recommend!

This novella was an absolute five-star binge—spicy, swoony, and wildly addictive from start to finish. The insta-love hit just right, with that electric, can’t-look-away chemistry between a broody, intimidating hero and a heroine who’s equal parts vulnerable and endearing. Bane is the ultimate “touch her and you’re done” fantasy—fierce, protective, and secretly soft in all the ways that matter.

I loved how the story balanced dark tension with humor, giving us a heroine you root for and a romance that feels intense yet surprisingly tender. The heat? Off the charts. The swoon? Constant. If you’re in the mood for a fast, steamy read with a possessive bodyguard and a heroine who finds safety—and love—in the most unexpected place, this one delivers perfectly.

Thank you to the author and Booksprout for the ARC. This review is only my opinion.

Funny and Spicy

I enjoyed this a lot! There were a few points in the book that made me giggle because they were perfectly absurd.

To me, the spice level feels like a 🌶️🌶️🌶️ but I like that. For a story like this, a three feels perfect, anything more would have felt like too much.

*MINOR SPOILERS*

Bane was in the right the place at the right time to cross paths with Dakota and I'm happy she listened to her gut and asked him to be her bodyguard.

I feel bad for Dakota - essentially tossed into the world by parents that clearly don't give enough care about their daughter to be concerned she's being stalked. And she's so scared she asks a random stranger to protect her because her parents are useless.

Bane goes out of his way to make sure she's safe and treats her with the love she should have from her parents.

Rent A Bodyguard is a quick steamy read that follows Dakota and Bane.

Dakota feels like she's being watched but unfortunately no one believes her not the police, her parents or the private investigator she hired. Then she literally falls into an enormous man while getting coffee. She feels out of sorts but safe for the first time which leads her to this stanger to be her bodyguard.
Bane isn't a good guy but is intrigued that a total stranger wants to hire him to be a bodyguard. He's
an enforcer, hitman, muscle but never a protector until he met Dakota now everything feels different.

If you want a insta-love sex story but no real plot this will be the book for you.

I received a free ARC from the author through Bookfunnel an I'm voluntarily leaving my review.

Dakota and Bane are awesome and hot and steamy. When no one believes that Dakota is being watched, she literally falls into help. When she sees Bane she hopes he could be the one to protect her. He actually believes her about her being watched. She wants to hire him to be her bodyguard. He accepts, but not to be her bodyguard. He will protect her, but also have steamy time. Bane does have a big secret. What he really does for a job. What will happen when his secrets come out? Will the connection they have break? I really enjoyed these two. Dakota needs a man like Bane to keep her safe. I’m loving these stories that Darcy is writing. They may be short, but they don’t lack a storyline, great characters, and steam.

Some great banter in this book again.

Shes convinced shes being watched and no one believes her. She sees a mountain man in a coffee shop and asks will he be her body guard.

She has pink hair, 3 ferrets and a sunny personality. He wasnt expecting anything and instead found everything. Can he keep her safe?

Book quote:
Mother of God. She’s going to kill me. After everything I’ve seen and done, there’s something poetic about being taken out by a five-foot-nothing blogger who can’t name a ferret for shit. Not exactly how I imagined going out one day, but then I’ve seen worse ways to die.
