I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.

Atoned I'd the first book in an explosive, action-packed sci-fi/urban fantasy series, and I loved every second! Having grown up in the 80s, I jumped at the chance to read this after hearing it read like an 80s action film - and I wasn't disappointed! This book was well written and brought to life vividly by some amazing scene settings. Felix Drake is a fantastic character, and I feel we've just scratched the surface with him in this novel. The banter between the characters brought many a smile to my face, and I just adored the android character Bokk. I'm so excited for book two and to see where it takes us.

Atoned by Steve McHugh was one fantastic read!

It's SciFi, but it felt as close up and fast as an urban fantasy. I loved the banter and bickering, and as always the amazing friendships and loyalties. This, and the very organic, diverse cast is one of the major draws of McHugh's books, and they only get better! I especially loved the android Brokk, as I was always drawn to the non human characters.

I enjoyed how there was a bit of an overlap with his previous book Blackcoat, without having to read the other one to get the full experience. Just a nice little easter egg sort of thing.

The plot is action heavy and the pace is quick. Once you start to read, you really can't stop, so I more or less inhaled this whole book in one go!

*Thoughts*

Steven McHugh's Atoned is the first installment in the authors The Wardens series. This story mixes Science Fiction with Urban Fantasy. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far, far into the future, Civil War tore across the Union Empire, leaving countless dead in its wake. It was a war started by one man, once beloved by the Empire. His betrayal to both the Union and the Rebellion faction, still lingers in the memory of those who lived through it. His son, Felix Drake, has tried to avoid having to live with the past, but there are those eager to blame Felix for his father's misdeeds.

Good start to a good series

I loved McHugh's Hellequin series, so thought I'd give this a try. A very interesting new universe that I hope has as many twists and turns as were hinted at in this first novel. I look forward to the next.

I have got to say that this was an excellent read. Every time I read a Steve J. McHugh book, I always think to myself that I must read more, but as you know, life and TBR’s have a pesky habit of getting in the way of me picking up different books, and I am sure that it’s the same for everyone else.

The first book that I read by Steve J. McHugh was Crimes Against Magic, and I enjoyed that one immensely, so when I was invited on the tour for this latest novel, it was a no brainer.

Atoned takes place in the already established Union Empire Universe, which was introduced in the novella Blackcoat, focussing on the Blackcoat Celine Moro (who coincidentally makes an appearance in this book).
Atoned is the first book in The Wardens series and centres on the main character Felix Drake.

When Felix Drake is called to a triple homicide by his boss Celine Moro, the incident will unravel a plot to destabilise the Union throne and will shine a light on secrets that Felix had thought hidden in his past.

I really enjoyed this mix of noirish action thriller and sci fi as the plot runs to its final conclusion. As we get deeper into the book, there are twists and turns aplenty. The book itself is a light read and McHugh does a good job of mixing light hearted banter amongst the characters and intense action scenes.

Added to that, there is a likeable set of characters that help the story along, and whilst the side characters do their job of supporting the main character, you can’t help but have favourites amongst them. One of these being the sentient cybernetic lifeform Bokk, who doesn’t act like machines should.

I must say that if you liked things like Firefly, I am sure that you will enjoy this book, and whilst it is not set in a sci fi western setting, it has a similar feel to it.

The audiobook itself is a great rendition of the book. I have listened to many Podium Audio productions and they have always been good quality and this was no exception. Added to that, the narrator is Tim Gerrard Reynolds who happens to be one of my favourite narrators and has a great range when it comes to narration. In fact, shortly before listening to this one, I was listening to him narrate another series that I really enjoy.

I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s a great book, but now I need to read Blackcoats to get up to date.

I was already a huge fan of Mr. McHugh's, so I didn't really pay too much attention to the summary when I hit the "Buy" button. Once I actually started the book, I had to stop and go find the plot summary because it wasn't taking place in any of the already formed worlds of his existing series. Imagine my surprise when I realized that this was a brand new series - a whole new world - and we were going into space!

We are introduced to Felix Drake, but we aren't really given too much information about him in the beginning. We are told that he is a Warden and that the Warden's are a fairly important enforcement group who investigate crimes affecting the Royal Family or the ruling members of the Union Empire. We begin to learn about the Union Empire- a collection of THOUSANDS of planets under one umbrella with The King of Stars the ruling authority. The setting is very futuristic, with space travel, flying vehicles, starships -the whole works.

And with so many different planets, there are different species of people. There are humans - of which Felix Drake falls under, but we get to see a variety of species - Sarcian, Oreaf, Dreic, etc. Then, to make everything even more interesting, there are certain Humans who have some type of ability to affect aether - another word for having some type of magic. These Humans are called Sages.

So, we begin to learn things slowly. All we know in the beginning is that Felix Drake is a Warden Team Leader, and he is tasked with investigating a murder. The murder however, is important because 2 of the 3 victims are children of Counselor's (think Senators) and Drake surprises everyone when he lets them know that he knew these 2 victims. That he actually grew up with them before leaving the planet at 16 years of age. Granted, it has been decades, but this opens the door to all of us starting to find out who Felix Drake really is. Top that off with a very interesting storyline and we are off to the races.

I actually really enjoyed this book. Yes, it is the first book so we did have to deal with the building of the world, but it is done nicely. There is also a great group of secondary characters - both on Felix's Warden Team, and there are also bad guys galore. There is an overarching storyline that begins to come together later in the timeline, but we get to follow along as Felix tries to figure out what the heck is going on and who is trying to kill the members of the Royal Family.

This book ties up some of the plot lines, but it still leaves several issues wide open. We've learned WHO the bad guy/gal is, but that person is still out there somewhere. We haven't learned the WHY yet, so there are still many unanswered questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book.

Honestly, I really liked Felix as a MMC, but my favorite character is Bokk - he's a Synth with an actual personality. What's a Synth you ask? Well, you need to read the book to find out. I especially LOVED getting chapters in Bokk's POV. That was too cool.

So, now I'm invested in another open series from Mr. McHugh and happy for it. Add to this the fact that it is narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds and I'm completely on board.

Can't wait for his next book - in which ever series he puts out.

Do you enjoy action movies, particularly those of the 80’s variety? Perhaps you love Blade Runner or just a good action sci fi? Well Atoned is the book for you! Despite being a hefty 400 pages I devoured this book in a couple of days (actually over a weekend and by staying up much later than I should!). It is full of action, twists and turns and superb world building. Best of all it has a host of memorable and believable characters to boot.

Felix Drake is a brilliant, although perhaps flawed, protagonist. I adored the way he fights to try and protect the Empire and people his father sought to destroy and the complexity it builds in his character. While I loved all the characters I have to say my favourite was Bokk and I absolutely adored how they were written. It was an android done right but I adored how Bokk had their own personality developing but still maintained the logic side. I could go on for hours about them but I won’t. Beyond the main characters, side ones are also well built and developed. You really get a clear picture of all the characters, not just from description but how they act and feel and I loved it.

This is in part down to the writing which I loved. McHugh is a master at bringing his world to life and best of all fleshing it out in such a way that we don’t get large information dumps and learn about the workings, politics, people etc as we go but in a way it doesn’t break your immersion. On top of that the fighting and action scenes are so real it’s insane. In terms of genre it’s definitely science fiction with a undertone of urban fantasy and perhaps a touch of cyber punk which I loved.

The characters coupled with the writing and genres create an unforgettable, action packed adventure that you cannot help but get hooked into. If you love sci-fi with action, twists and turns, a bit of violence and swearing, realistic and interesting characters and a vibrant world you NEED to get a copy of Atoned as soon as you can!

The Wardens: Book 1.
Civil War tore across the Union Empire, leaving countless dead in its wake. It was a war started by one man, once beloved by the Empire. His betrayal still lingers in the memory of those who lived through it.
This was a good read. I did like Drake Luca Rosie Jaysa, Dai’ix Celine Sateri Rollos Etamus and Tuck. Gusin I did really like. Lots of action. I liked how Jaysa and Drake were together. The conversation they had. “You have a friend,” Drake told Jaysa when he saw a Radner walking toward them. “He’s on my list of people to kill too,” and “Hey, will you look at that,” Drake said. “I get another chance to kill you. Looks like it’s my lucky day after all.” I am looking forward to the next book. 5*.

Atoned is the first book in the Wardens series by Steve McHugh.
The novel is sci fi mixed with Urban fantasy, which I found a great mix. What a great book, I was hooked from the very first page and I kept reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened.
The novel has lots of twists and turns and was like a Saturday night 80's action film, which I found fun. The novel had a great story and a brilliant cast of characters. Steve is a brilliant writer and I can't wait to read more by him. I highly recommend it.

I do this author and have enjoyed his urban fantasy books but this is the first time I have read one of his science fiction ones and I loved it. If I was to break it down, it is a crime thriller that follows a procedural route but it is a science fiction story. The Wardens are essentially the police, but there is so much more to them than that, especially Drake!

When two members of the Council are murdered it is up to Drake and his team to try to discover what has happened. This takes him into an underworld environment with gangs and those wanting to alter or change things for more power. Who the actual leaders are is a mystery, and one step forward seems to lead to more questions and answers are not easy to come by.

An attack against the Royal household is an indicator that there is something more going on that people realise. Drake is joined by another team and with some influential backing they are tasked with using what they can to discover what is going on with any means necessary.

There are several characters in this book and these are listed at the front. I did a quick scan over these but I was too eager to get to the story itself. Drake is the main character, but only just as there are several others that have an equally important role to play. I have to say I really liked the character of Bokk, they are brilliant and while they come across as a little naive there is something more to them than you first realise.

While there is an investigation going on, this is also a science fiction story. The author has not used too many technical terms and what he does use is introduced and explained enough so the reader can keep up. Some of the armaments and augmentations make the mind boggle but they also fit well with the characters. His world-building is great and the author gives descriptions where needed to explain the scenery and also the political and power structure. In any world, there is going to be a level of hierarchy and this one is no different.

The characters in the story have pasts and the author has given us a glimpse of some of those and I do think there is more to reveal as this series continues. While the author has given some indication as to Drake's past there is something that Drake himself is made aware of towards the end of this first book.

A fabulous start to a series and it was a brilliant story. Full of action and it is one I would definitely recommend. I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

Disappointed

I really liked the Hellequin Series. The characters were good, the world was interesting, I looked forward to the next novel.

I was given this one to read as a recommendation and was interested...

However.

Possible spoiler alerts.

There are two reasons I do not recommend this book.

The first one is that it was physically painful to read the scenes with BOKK, the synth. The use of "they/them" as the pronouns for the robot made it very hard to realize who the pronouns were referring to. Was it BOKK or the people it was fighting? Or someone else entirely?

Look, I get it if you want to make the android sexless. There's a pronoun for that... "it." And, news flash, SF authors have been doing that for years. Or, you could invent a word. SF authors have been doing that too. But using a pronoun that refers to multiple people, which might have made sense if BOKK had multiple personalities, just makes the book difficult to read, easy to lose teack of who's doing what and just not enjoyable. I slogged through to the end because of stubbornness but I'm not reading any sequels. It will just be too painful and yes, reading this book gave me a headache.

And now to the next point which I am sure will garner me criticism. STOP MAKING SO MANY OF THE CHARACTERS GAY!

A very small portion of the population is gay, less than 1 percent. Of the 10-12 main characters, 8 of them are in or want a same sex relationship. Our hero is the odd man out in that he's straight.

And when it comes to an heir to the throne being gay... the heir is expected to produce heirs. Same sex relationships don't produce children. And the author doesn't put in place artificial insemination or some other way of producing heirs. The heir even makes a comment about not being able to generate a bunch of heirs in the book.

I do not mind gay characters in a book. IF IT FITS THE BOOK AND THE CHARACTERS. True or not, to me this book feels like it is written around checking all the social justice checkboxes.

I am sad to see this author go this route. I saw a bit of this in the Hellequin Series, the set of books dealing with what happens during the time Nate is dead. It was light, it fit the characters, I didn't mind enough to stop reading.

But I mind with this series as it ruins the experience. The use of "they/them" was painful and poorly executed. The number of gay couples was just too much.

Adios, Hugh, you have hit the Editor Problem of popular authors. That point in an author's career when the editors stop giving a crap and let junk slide though because your name will sell it. Tom Clancy commented on it, Steven King fell victim to it when he wrote The Tommy knockers (which should have been a novella at best instead of 600 pages of ).

I will always like your Hellequin Series and will reread it. Your more recent stuff... Probably not.

absolutely brilliant.

I first read Steve’s work and captivated by his ability to tell a story. Build a world around characters. Drake and those within his world is just as masterful. If you are not adverse to a few swear words, dark plans, twists and turns, pretty good names of characters and a dessert soon of violence. Atoned is a book well worth the wait and well worth a read.

Im now a sci fi lover!!!

This is the first in what im guessing is going to be an action packed series that I want to devour asap! Steve does an amazing job of not only crafting an amazing fictional world but also seamlessly blending Sci fi and fantasy. These genres together made this an exciting and unique read that kept me entertained through out.

I loved the characters and how real they felt. Drake is an mmc that you can't help but like. Always fighting for the truth, I felt connected to these characters from the start. This is a read full of action, suspense and twists and turns that has you on the edge of your seat. It's a very original plot that I can't say I've read anything like before. Definitely a book I will be recommending to fantasy and sci fi lovers alike.

great story, new worlds, new kinds of beings !

This may be Steve McHugh's first scifi novel series, but I'll predict it won't be his last. Solid writing, great action, believable interactions between characters, new kinds of non-humans and augmented humans, effective world building, and violence. What more can a reader ask for? :-)

I have been a loyal fan of Steve’s books going to crimes against magic in 2013 and Not one has disappointed me ! Now this book is start of new series and set as space opera so was little bit should I shouldn’t I about buy it then a certain little voice in my head from a certain little fox screaming in his polite tone and language said what the fxxx you doing you xxxxwomble ! So that little fox was right on the money as what a book ! Loved the whole setting and plot was really interesting but characters are all so different than hellequin but it’s that familiar style of crafting them and making you love them all! This is a must for anyone who likes well any book as it has it all

I really enjoyed this audiobook! I’ve been really getting into sci-fi books recently and this one was another to add to my loved list. The narrator was perfect for the story and I would absolutely love to be able to meet Drake and all the crew! There was a good mixture of character focus and action in this book to keep up a good flow. I’m glad it’s a first book and will certainly be reading book two.

This is the first book in The Wardens series and also the very first book that I've read from this author.

I often shy away from fantasy books because I often find them either daunting in size or content.
The world building tends to be so intense that I can't focus on the storyline and so get bogged down and don't enjoy them like I should.

I was so happy that I gave this one a go and stretched my genres, because this was such a great read and I have ended it, desperate to find out more and read book 2!

I really liked that each chapter was entitled so it was super easy to work out where in the world we were and who we were following through that section.

The world building was clear and detailed enough to give a vivid image, but without overloading my brain with information.

The characters really jumped off the page too. They were well presented and easy to connect with as we heard their stories.
They developed well even just through this starter book, which often we don't find in a series.
There were some great relationships and I loved all the banter which offset some of the politics and violence.
The audio narration was just perfect - I loved the use of the different voices to clarify each characters' speech and they also managed to portray each personality within this too.

I liked the fusion of magic and tech which gave this more of a sci-fi feel than pure fantasy.
Maybe this is why I found this was an easier read than I'd been expecting.
Can't wait for book 2.

I've enjoyed several of Steve J. McHugh's urban fantasy books in the past and so despite Atoned being science fiction, I expected an exciting read, full of drama and humour. I wasn't disappointed. This is the first book in The Wardens series, although there is a link to his previous novel, Blackcoat, which reminded me that I really must read that soon too. Atoned is exactly how a series should start; the first-rate world-building, excellent characterisation and pacy, thrilling plot meant I raced through the pages, completely enthralled throughout.
With its vividly imaginative sense of place and intricately layered plot, Atoned is an impressive space opera which promises much for further storylines as the series progresses. However, that's not to suggest that this first instalment is merely setting the scene for future adventures and this is an absorbingly satisfying self-contained novel, which concludes some parts of the narrative while leaving other threads tantalisingly waiting to be explored more in the future.
The opening chapter introduces two of the antagonists, one of whom is particularly crucial to this first Wardens book. Most of the chapters, however, are told from the third-person narrative of some of the protagonists – most notably Felix Drake and Jaysa Benezta. Some of the action is also told through the perspective of Drake's synth, Bokk and although they have only a relatively small role in proceedings, they certainly make an impression and I'm sure will be a favourite character for many readers. Meanwhile, both Felix and Jaysa are fascinating characters; they share obvious similarities, both having troubled pasts, they are highly skilled and ruthless but they are still clearly defined as individuals. The start of the book includes a helpful character list and even though their respective descriptions and the world we are introduced to here seems unfamiliar and perhaps a little daunting initially, the vast Union Empire with its complex, violent past, is gradually and engrossingly revealed. Each new explanation or revelation, whether relating to personnel, technology or the setting itself, helps to immerse readers in an intriguing world which although obviously strange, is always believable.
It can be tricky to strike a balance between the imparting of information necessary for the expansive development of a new world and the emotional resonance required to ensure readers care about the fate of the characters in an ambitious series such as this but Steve J. McHugh negotiates that fine line superbly. I loved learning more about the various races who feature here, the ability of the Sages and their use of the aether, the political landscape with its inevitable corruption, the mysteries of The Aperture and the brutal Civil War which holds particular resonance for Felix Drake. However, what really captivated me was the beautifully developed, empathetic and witty characterisation. I am already invested in the lives of these characters and the adrenaline-pumping final chapters were especially tense as the book reached its heart-pounding conclusion.
The best science-fiction realises its freedom to be truly inclusive and to examine diversity across race and gender and without ever becoming heavy-handed, Steve J. McHugh does just that with Atoned. An action-packed, compelling read from start to finish. I can't wait to discover what lies in store for the Wardens next! Very highly recommended.

Our Rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for Goodreads

Atoned is the first book of The Wardens series by the bestselling author, Steve J. McHugh.
Civil War tore across the Union Empire, leaving countless dead in its wake. It was a war started by one man, once beloved by the Empire. His betrayal still lingers in the memory of those who lived through it.

Decades later, his son, Felix Drake, is a Warden tasked with both protecting the ruling members of the Union Empire and its Council, and bringing those powerful and influential people to justice should they break the law.

Drake protects the very Empire his father sought to destroy.

When two members of a Council family are murdered, Drake and his team investigate, only to uncover corruption, resentment, and yet more death.

As the case deepens, Drake is forced back into a life he’d left long ago, bringing with it the same disdain and anger from the very people he’s sworn to protect.

However, he’s no longer a helpless child, and the people who try to intimidate him now are about to discover that Drake is so very much his father’s son.

Let’s begin with what I felt didn’t work or like about Atoned.

First of, I found this book very hard to follow in places. Sometimes the characters and the action would just go by in a blur, unable to take any of it in and having to go back over sections to understand what is going on. As the book progressed it unfortunately got progressively worse and harder to follow in places.

Also, in the same vein I found that too much was happening. The story was too congested and could probably have done with streamlining the story a little bit, this would have helped massively to mke it much easier to follow and be more focused on what the story actually was. It felt like the author had bitten off more than he could chew in these moments and had too much to try and process.

Now onto the more good stuff.

From the very beginning, I was hooked on the story. The concept was intriguing, following Felix Drake as he has to confront his past to help solve the recent murders. The conspiracy behind the murders was great to follow and uncover, the twists and the reveals were entertaining to read through and kept me hooked throughout.

The characters were great, they were interesting and had a layer of depth to them as they wrestled with all the revelations they uncovered as they tried to solve the murders. They had such fun interactions with each other, some great humour came out from the characters ripping on each other. It was easy to like the characters on the team and easy to make you want to carry on reading.

Atoned is the first book in what looks like the making of an exciting new series. While I had my problems with this, with sometimes finding the story too congested and hard to follow, the characters were interesting and the action was intense.

If you are a fan of the classic 80’s action flick then I think you will be able to find some enjoyment from reading this book. I will be looking out for when the second part comes out and seeing where this story will take us.

What a cracking start to a series! The book starts strong as we are quickly introduced to the two main characters.. it’s a typical good versus bad yeh? Oh you are so wrong.. there’s so much more depth to this tale.

Many years ago there was a civil war… a civil war that nearly tore the world apart.. fast forward and we meet Felix Drake, a Warden.. tasked with protecting those his father tried to kill during the war.. he betrayed those Felix now protects..Felix wants nothing more than to forget the past.. he knows if anyone finds out who he actually is then he life will change drastically.. no one would trust the son of a traitor after all!

He’s remained hidden for a while but it’s time to return to the place he once called home.. his friends have been murdered but why?.. as soon as he arrives all hell breaks loose..

Felix knows Sabas Gossard has something to do with this but he needs to prove it.. Sabas was put in prison by Felix so how the hell is he already free? Yeh that’s right.. corruption..

It’s no surprise to me that there’s deceit from those in power but just who the players are shocks Felix..surely not? Plus there’s someone working in the shadows.. will we find out who is orchestrating these events? And what’s the endgame?

There’s lots of different characters and roles but everything is introduced nicely for the reader to take in, and the attention given to the development really helped this stroy come alive.

I particularly like Bokk, Felix’s security synth.. Bokk once belonged to his father, and I felt Bokk played a pivotal role which I hope gets expanded upon as there’s the interesting idea of these synth developing personalities.

The plot of the book develops at a swift but nice pace and hints there’s some good things to come. As setups go Atoned has it all, great characters and so much potential clear and ready to pour out.

There’s hints of past events becoming a focus.. were the events that played out during the war exactly as they seem? Or was there more to it? And what does this mean for Drake? He’s got his own sage abilities coming out.. but he seems special..and I’m excited to find out why!

This is my first foray into the authors imagination, and I was wonderfully impressed with the flow and development

I have to start off by saying I listened to this book, and I adore audiobooks. I absolutely LOVED the narrator - Tim Gerard Reynolds - and would happily listen to anything he has to read! His voice was just nice to listen to!

This book, however, is not a book I should have listened to. It required a lot of concentration and I got lost in the people and places. I am still not quite sure who everyone was, but I do know I loved Felix Drake. I'm glad I listened to it, as I have been dying to read it for a while. I haven't a scooby of everything that was going on, but I have to say I still really enjoyed it. Bokk was a great character, but it was Felix who stole these how for me. I am going to re-read this one definitely before book 2 comes out as this is such an exciting series. I know it sounds like I am contradicting myself as I don't 100% know the details but I got the gist of what was going on, and I enjoyed it. So much to unpack. That's why I need to give it all my attention next time because I can just tell it's going to be a fav of mine.

I love McHugh's writing! He won me over when I read Those Who Dwell in Darkness and I loved the writing in this. It's the details, there is much detail, and I fear I lost that by listening. The combination of McHugh and Reynolds is spectacular, it's me who was selfish and didn't concentrate.

I loved the banter within the team and the new addition at the end, I can see that is going to be a fun partnership. The world-building is just magic, and I could see the chase for the sniper when we had the panic with Hideo. I could picture the room and everything going on so perfectly, even all the technology that was introduced - some sound fun!!

I am definitely looking forward to the next book - but I think I will do it the justice it deserves and read it!

I was just looking back through the list of books by Steve McHugh that I've read over the last several years. I then compared it to his list of published works. I'm definitely a fan since I've read a clear majority. Atoned is the first of a new series. I read Blackcoat (a novella) during July 2022. The main character is Celine. In Atoned, the MC is Felix Drake. He is very interesting and complex individual. Scary powerful but still human. Of course, my favorite character(s) in this first book isn't the MC. I like the synths. There are lots of characters and many different lifeforms.

Atoned

I fell in love with Steve McHughs writing way back when or was Crimes against magic (how was that over 10yrs ago?) I mean what isn't there to love?

These characters are secretive, with histories hinted at, well written & perfectly flawed.... Just what I like. For a first in a series this is well paced giving you just enough time to absorb what you've read without peppering you with more & more intricate twists than you are ready for...... Don't wanna risk spoilers so let's just say I huffed "Dude" more than once & one chapter or maybe two was read with a quirked eyebrow whilst biting my nails.
Am already tapping my toes ready for the next instalment so if you haven't already succumbed to the McHugh Magic I recommend you get comfy & put on your seatbelts coz it's a ride

Felix Drake is not his father, in fact he changed his name not to be associated with the guy who turned his back on the Union. It doesn't matter to some people, though.

After twenty-seven years Drake returns to the planet of his youth as a Warden, which is law enforcement for the Union. Sadly, friends of his wind up murdered and Drake is on the case to find out who is responsible.

I loved the characters in the book, and the witty banter was the best. The author is great for that. Drake about to be killed, enemy says I'll strew your guts out all over this $hitty planet (paraphrasing) to which Drake replies, "you should see it in the summer!"

The best character overall has to be Bokk, the synth, a robot with feelings who is very protective of Drake.

I do want to read more adventures of this crew, and will be adding the second book to my TBR list once it comes out.

3.5 stars really. Would have been four stars, but there were numerous typos. McHugh seems to be cranking out new series like mad since the end of the Hellaquin (and followup) series. In this series and in The Raven series, he seems to be more focused on types of firearms. I suppose it's not a bad thing, but sometimes there are more in depth descriptions of the gun someone is carrying than the person.

There are numerous carry-forwards from his previous books, including this world's version of a sorcerer's band apparently.

All that said, I enjoyed the series. I've read everything McHugh as published, so he must be doing something to keep me coming back. I could do with a few less a-hole characters who serve no purpose other than being a-holes, but hey.

Great New Concept book!

Liked the characters from the beginning. Drake as a warden, a sage, a good leader... What more can you ask for? A good second in command, a great bunch of team members who are solid in their own right and a villain who just deserves to die, badly.

It's based on the characters and not really on the world building aspects in this Union empire. It is character focused in their trials and tribulations in finding the unknown villain.

Can't wait for Steve McHugh's next book in this series!

Steve never disappoints.

Thought I would struggle a bit with the new world building. Unfamiliar names and different "magic". I tend to read urban fantasy, which is where I first found Steve McHugh. Sci fi is not my preferred genre. But this book was an easy read and drew me in and kept me there. This is one which I will reread when book 2 comes out, to refresh myself of the characters and settings.
It's a very intriguing start and I am looking forward to reading more of Drake.

Enjoyable

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi but I am a fan of Steve McHugh's fantasy books so I had to give The Wardens a try. It is a cop drama set in a future world. I feel it had a slow start with chapter introductions to the featured characters, but about chapter
four or five, the intense action began and it was non-stop to the last chapter. I will be reading the next Atoned book.

Needed further editing

Interesting story but further editing was needed to tighten up the story and remove some glaring mistakes. There were also too many unnecessary characters which made the story hard to families at times. Other than that, the basic idea and plot of the story were interesting and the main characters engaging. I’d be more interested in reading more by this author if he was more aggressive about his editing.
