The Ghostkeeper: A Graphic Novel

Rate this book
Perfect for fans of everything from Lockwood & Co to The Haunting of Hill House, this gothic graphic novel follows a young medium with the gift—or curse, as some might say—to communicate with the dead.

Dorian Leith can see ghosts. Not only that, he listens to their problems and tries to help them move on to the afterlife. It’s a gift that’s made him an outcast to everyone in town. That is except for his dearly departed grandmother, who he’s partnered with to turn this paranormal ability into an honest living, and the local bookshop owner, who seems to be the only non-deceased person willing to give him a chance. But it’s all worth it to Dorian, who feels like he’s been given a bigger purpose. A chance to save those who cannot save themselves.

Then one day, the key to Death’s Door is stolen, trapping all the ghosts in the land of the living. Since he’s only one who can see them, the spirits rely on Dorian to retrieve the key before it is too late. If they can’t move on, they’ll soon be consumed by a ghostly rot that has begun to plague them.

As it continues to fester and spread, and the ghosts become desperate for relief, Dorian must do whatever it takes to find a way to bring peace to the restless dead—even if that peace comes at the cost of his own….

A spooky, meaningful, and gorgeous graphic novel with high stakes, memorable characters, LGBTQ+ representation, and lovely artwork

Themes to Expect
👻Grief and closure
👻Accepting change
👻Finding purpose
👻Healing
👻Self care, setting boundaries, and handling burnout

“Coping is the little decisions we make that give us our control back.”

For a graphic novel, this had depth! I spent a lot longer than expected just lingering in the artwork and getting lost in the story. The main character Dorian is a ghost therapist. When the afterlife is threatened and ghosts become trapped in the world of the living, the stakes are raised and Dorian must do everything he can to make things right. Easier said than done. Full of character development, creepy moments, lore, and even a nod to mental health this novel does not disappoint! I definitely recommend it and would love to see this become a TV series!

🕸Happy Spooky Season!🕸

Ever since a close brush with death as a child, Dorian can see ghosts, and considers his duty to console and counsel those still stuck in the mortal realm. But when ghosts start turning up claiming they've been locked out of their final resting place, he quickly becomes overwhelmed by the demands of the dead.

Sometimes a book surprises you in the best way when it charges off headlong into grappling with difficult and unexpected themes. This is definitely the case for The Ghostkeeper, which discusses the concepts of burnout and the importance of keeping boundaries while helping others, as well as grief and our relationship with death. I also liked how the author managed to pack in plenty of nuance for both the main and supporting characters, fleshing out the motivations behind their sometimes misguided actions.

And it's just a beautiful graphic novel! I absolutely loved the art, which runs the gamut from mysterious to humorous to romantic to creepy as the story calls for it, and does all of it perfectly, establishing characters and backstories in a matter of pages.

However, I did wish that Brody, Dorian's flatmate and love interest, got a little more development, as he feels flat compared to pretty much all the other characters we meet despite having an important role in the story. There's also some questions about how Dorian came to be living and working how he did that I would have liked learning the answers for.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Okay, this was really adorable! Spooky, sweet, and entertaining. The Ghostkeeper is about a man who is a therapist for ghosts. Because maybe they just need to talk through their baggage! But there are people who want to exterminate the ghosts, which only makes them more upset. Plus there is a gay romantic subplot that is very sweet and supportive!

This is partly a story about how, in order to give and help others in need, you must also take care of yourself and have good boundaries. Otherwise, you're likely to experience burnout. But it's also about the things we don't say or put off saying to loved ones, and about different ways people experience grief. The artwork is a lovely blend of cozy and spooky and I really enjoyed this! I received a copy for review via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

"I was alone in a dark, muddy space under a starlit sky" (pulled from memory)

Honestly, that doesn’t sound half-bad. Purgatory sounds dreamish.

I skimmed quite a bit of the novel. It felt like more of a novel than a graphic one. I suppose it really fits in snuggly as a graphic novel...ironic, cause, y’know, GHOSTS. It’s not bad by any means, however I must say with less say more - Page count more than anything. Other comics would be split over multiple volumes, and I appreciate that the entirety of the story was told in one sitting. Single-story telling need to happen more often. Still debut work, and it must be said that this has more polish than other, similar first-time publications.

No story is under obligation to have romance. No story is under obligation to have conflict.

I’d rather them be hinted at than plunge us in. This did serve to sever the story.

I’m curious how this would be if we didn’t have any crazed exorcists or an overly vanilla romance. It would be much like the introduction of YuYu Hakusho or Mushishi. In fact, the main character resembles Ginko. :D

The style in which the art’s drawn isn’t my cuppa. The coloring is my cuppa. You never second guess the art, and it’s a little ridiculous to say but I’m here after reading comics that leave me scratching my head as to what happened and/or what’s happening. So it’s purpose is served and it fits the story and enhances it.

Overall a decent work. I’d like to read more from the author as they mature in the craft.

P.S. The highland cows were super cute.

thank you to Penguin Teen for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book, but I ended up finding a beautiful story of belonging, grief, and love in the story of a gay ghost therapist. Dorian Leith can see ghosts, and he’s made his entire life basically being their therapist so he can heal their pain and help them move on from the world of the living. But when the key to the door that takes them into the land of the dead is stolen, suddenly the ghosts are no longer able to cross over, and doing his job escalates to an unimaginable level. Along the way, he’s trying to keep the connections he has to the world of the living, and himself, grounded. Although it took me a little bit to get into, this story was beautiful and beautifully told with its art, telling a story that felt unique while also touching on topics we can all relate to at least one point in our lives. I would definitely recommend it!

When the story first begins, it’s a little hard to truly understand what’s going on, and I almost wish we’d gotten introduced to Dorian before his work, although it was satisfying to see how everything ended up wrapping up at the end. The outward problem of the story, people’s reactions to ghosts and the missing key, seem somewhat mundane (as mundane as ghosts can be) at first, but everything builds up until it’s impossible to ignore. Throughout, I really loved seeing the exploration of Dorian’s character, both with his past and his future with characters like Brody. I wouldn’t describe this as cozy fantasy necessarily, but it’s certainly adjacent.

It’s a little bit hard to talk about the best parts of this story because they kind of act as spoilers, but what I can say that this is a beautiful exploration of grief and loss, love for others and for yourself, and the story of someone who can see ghosts and the burdens that come from the living and the dead. It’s also beautifully rendered, showcasing the pain but also the beauty contained within this story. I can’t wait to return to this story once again when it’s physically released!

Is this a ghost story? Definitely, yes. But is this also a significant story tackling the importance of mental health and establishing boundaries, while also touching on people's outlook on death itself? Oh, absolutely.

This graphic novel is just so precious and so surprising 🥺 I knew I'd be getting a peculiar, paranormal story (the MC is literally a ghost therapist 😆), but I wasn't prepared for how profound it was going to be. It touched on a lot of important topics, the main ones being mental health advocacy and establishing boundaries. Dorian communicates with the dead and helps them move onto the afterlife, but in doing so he's also sacrificing a part of himself and his own mental health. This isn't exactly healthy, and definitely not in real life for us. I just really loved how the whole story doubles down on that and the readers get to realize that along with Dorian.

Also love the little bit of mythology and lore in this story! Ghosts, banshees, Death's door, Grim Reaper? I love it. Also there is a ghost cat, that's a whole star, right there. 😂

And of course the romantic subplot! It wasn't too major or anything, but it was so cute and sweet? I also saw from the author that the MC is bi/ace so that's also a wonderful surprise 🥹

As for the art and color, AMAZING. I did notice the art tend to be a bit blurry? But maybe that's just my e-arc, ofc that might not be final. But the art and style is so good, and I have no trouble following the dialogue and conversations between two or more characters. Also the character designs are incredible!

I could also argue that this isn't YA but maybe more on NA, just based in the characters since they seem older (but not yet middle aged). Overall, this was just a wholesome treat, and everything wrapped up nicely for me.

Exact rating: 4.00⭐️

Thank you so much to the publisher (Penguin Teen) and NetGalley for this e-arc!

I absolutely loved this Graphic Novel! Dorian Leith is such a beautiful main character with a gentle heart and pure feelings. He is very caring towards others who may not always be as kind to him in return. After obtaining the ability to see ghosts and a childhood traumatic experience he has set his adult life on the path of helping ghosts overcome their troubles and find eternal peace in the afterlife, a ghost "therapist" if you will. He is gentle and kind to them even when they are at their worst and gives so much of himself (almost too much) to each ghost in need.

This plot is so well done as we see Dorian learn to find a balance between living for himself and living for the dead. The ghosts and their troubles are depicted so uniquely and I would love another installment that shows a continuation of how things are going after some time. Plus I would love to check in on Dorian and Brody!

This graphic novel was an absolute delight! The art style was really great and I loved how much detail was on the pages. The story is about ghost therapist, Dorian, and touched on some really heavy topics. I really enjoyed the messages behind Dorian’s therapy sessions with the ghosts and found it to be really uplifting and hopeful. The story was really cute and I could tell so much care was put into this. I do wish some of the side characters were more fleshed out, but it’s fine. Overall a super cute graphic novel!

I adored the artwork, and Dorian and Brody were very sweet. But boy, was that a lot of therapy. The dialogue was so stuffed with it, it felt clunky. And the artwork is lovely, but the whimsical appearance makes the book seem geared for children, and I can't imagine younger kids really having the patience for all the mental health convos. A nice story, but I'm not sure who I'd recommend it to.

This was a really beautifully illustrated young adult graphic novel. It tells the story of Dorian who is a ghost therapist who helps ghosts deal with their problems so that they can pass on. In this book he faces a big problem that prevents the ghosts in the area from moving on.

I found this a compelling story with lots of drama. There are villains, new friends, and a little touch of romance. And so many angry ghosts. Both the main character and the side characters go on journeys of healing and learning throughout the book. I loved seeing how Dorian grew and learned to set boundaries. Overall, a great queer graphic novel with a magical story at its centre.

Thank you Netgalley and Penguinteen for the chance to read this one early. The Ghostkeeper is available now.

Despite it being a Young Adult graphic novel, this story touches a lot on mental health and in such a way that I felt like I learned techniques too. It makes sense since the protagonist acts as a therapist for ghosts.

I actually really enjoyed this story. I want to forewarn that there aren't any plot twists or shocking moments that can sometimes really elevate a story, but I also don't think it necessarily needed it and I find that it can stand on its own. I am teetering between 3 and 4 stars, I think it's more of a 3.5 but because of the gorgeous artwork, colouring, the queer rep, plus-size rep, and character development and interactions, it definitely rounds up to 4 (for me anyway!).

There were a few moments that got really tense and I felt for the characters. When a graphic novel can do that - that's pretty amazing.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this digital ARC!

Title: The Ghostkeeper by Johanna Taylor
Publication Date- 07/23/24
Publisher- PRH Putnam
Overall Rating- 6 out of 5 stars

Review: Review copy given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Before I tell you why this is a new favorite for me, getting 6 out of 5 stars I need to quickly give you some perspective about my life that led to me rating this so highly. I am a therapist, I work with grief clients, I need reminders to take care of myself so I can take care of others. This amazing graphic novel is about grief, therapy, fear, coping, and so much more. Somehow the author educates people on what it’s like to be a therapist, why it’s rewarding and how it’s challenging at the same time as taking the perspective of a client and how difficult grief is. There couldn’t have possibly been a better time for me to pick this up and at the permission of this book, I just ate half a gallon of icecream.

The art style is beautiful and colorful. I just pre-ordered two copies one for me and one for a coworker who works closely with grief. Though I had a personal experience with this, the talent of the author makes it so anyone can pick it up. I’m not sure I will ever stop gushing about this. It was so cute and also heartbreaking and hopeful, so many things all in once. I can’t wait to have a physical copy on my shelf. Please give it a shot.

A friend recommended me this and I thought I should check it out! This is an objectively good book—I might raise my rating by .5 stars—but I didn’t like it enough to give it 4 stars. The concept was interesting, the therapy sessions felt like conversations that could actually happen(which I am never used to seeing in fiction), and I thought some of the characters were interesting (see: the ghost kid! I think her name was Lucy?). Some of the humor was a bit morbid, and I always find that fun in a historical fantasy setting, the inclusion of ghosts and horror made that all the better. But the romance didn’t capture my attention, the character arcs were fairly predictable (also, while it’s nice to have a fluffy cat sidekick, Muffins was… standard), and the message around burnout and trauma was heavy-handed in a way that felt akin to Steven Universe Future’s finale.

Also, the turnarounds of the side characters really bugged me?? The twist villain didn’t have an understandable motivation, one of the other side characters became a hero way too quickly, and the plague doctors who were the antagonists for most of the book had very little personality to them.

The art was nice, though. (But not scary, even with the body horror elements.) And I specifically liked how showing grief through familial relationships with the ghosts was done in a slightly different manner than what I’m used to seeing. But, Dorian. Baby boy. Go see an actual therapist, I BEG

This was a great graphic novel to really talk about grief, mental health, and the pressure we put on ourselves.

I absolutely loved the art style (which is what really drew me in in the first place). I loved that we had an LGBTQ+ side romance plot. I loved that the characters were so diverse.

I did feel like the messaging and even character traits were a bit too over-emphasized, and at times I wished for a bit more subtlety. But I still found myself tearing up near the end because of the story.

ARC provided by Penguin Teen (thanks!) Dorian Leith can see ghosts, but they don't scare him at all. In fact, he makes a living out of specializing in ghost therapy; ghosts come to him with their problems, and in return, Dorian helps them move on to the afterlife. Even though the townspeople rely on him to remove ghosts from their houses, Dorian has been shamed for his strange ability. But when the key to Death's door is stolen and ghosts cannot enter the afterlife, Dorian must return the key and help the ghosts along the way..

The Ghostkeeper was one of the best graphic novels that I've read in a while. I enjoyed the designs and vibrant colors. While conveying joy, the illustrations also had the capacity to inspire sadness and fear. The plot was very straightforward, while being intriguing. Dorian is a complex character; he gives so much of himself to others, and he must learn how to take care of himself while also helping his clients. The graphic novel also delicately handles themes of grief and mental health - they are constant battles that cannot be fought alone. Dorian learns that despite the fact that many people will be wary of him, there are also others who will love him and give him purpose.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!

I love a good ghost story, even if I cry like a baby during it.

After escaping death as a child, Dorian is giving the gift of Sight. He’s able to see ghosts and uses his ability to act as a therapist and help them move on to the other side. After the key to death’s door is stolen by a ghost child, Dorian does everyone in his power to return it so the ghosts can move on to the other side.

The romance in this was so cute. Brody was so sweet and while my thoughts went back and forth with him, he was a great companion for Dorian. There’s a lot of heavy topics here about grief and moving on. Accepting what has happened and how to go from there. Dorian and his Gran were adorable too. I really enjoyed this one and the art is beautiful.

I did not expect to love a graphic novel about a queer ghost therapist to be this awesome and endearing, but The Ghostkeeper seemed determined to exceed my expectations from the first page. To begin with, I loved the art style, and in particular how the ghosts were portrayed; the blue-tinged characters and in particular the clearly different speech bubbles helped keep the story clear and moving at a fast pace, and made the dialogue easier to follow than most other graphic novels I've read. The use of color schemes and panel shapes created a fabulous sense of atmosphere, and worked together with the quirky characters and fast-paced plot to create a story I couldn't put down.

But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of my favorite aspects of the story - Dorian himself. I connected with him so deeply - his internal struggles, his determination to help ghosts, his self-sacrificing propensity, his insecurity, and the depth of his friendships. The ghost therapist concept is brilliant to begin with, but The Ghostkeeper brings it alive, and the incredibly realistic (but also hilarious) strategies that Dorian uses to counsel the ghosts grounded the premise and made it utterly believable. I was particularly drawn to the way Dorian struggles to separate what he needs from what the ghosts need, a thread of realism that helped wholeheartedly sell me on the entire story.

I highly recommend The Ghostkeeper to readers ages eleven and up, particularly those who enjoy gorgeously illustrated graphic novels, brilliant characters, and a touch of ghostly horror!

Thank you Netgalley, Johanna Taylor, & Penguin Young Readers for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review. 🥰🫶
.
First off, I had issues with the formatting of the eARC where two graphic novel pages were counted as one “page” on my device so I had to zoom in on each page to read, which definitely made me read slower. 😔
.
I really enjoyed the concept of this book as our main character, Dorian, can see ghosts (after having a near-death experience) and uses his gifts to be a ghost therapist and help trapped ghosts pass on. This story definitely deals with grief in many forms as well as learning to place work/life boundaries for oneself and other mental health aspects. All of this was balanced perfectly between all the main cast of characters and we all got to see them have their own grief journey and it didn’t feel like too much. One aspect I really loved was the relationship between Dorian and Brody, as it wasn’t a perfect relationship. It took time to get to a good place and a lot of this was due to mental health and learning to care for oneself first before pursuing a relationship. The book is set in a historical setting and all the illustrations and coloring are absolutely gorgeous! 😍 All the supernatural elements are so well drawn they seem to be coming off the page! 😱 I also forgot to mention this book has Achillean and plus size rep! I really enjoyed the ending of the story and LOVED it! I will definitely be reading it again! I can’t wait to get a physical copy!💕

Wow. I didn't know what I was getting into when I started this and it does take a little bit to really get into but the last third packs such a punch that it just sends this whole book into an amazing category.

Dorian can see ghosts. He works as a ghost therapist to help ghosts find their way to the afterlife. When the key to death's door is taken and ghosts can no longer get to the afterlife, they start coming to Dorian and bombarding him to help them.

This book is a beautiful exploration of grief and healing as well as learning about boundaries and healthy relationships. It really is a fantastic graphic novel. The artwork is stunning and the story is amazing.

It's also casually queer. The main character Dorian is queer and the love interest is fat. Their friendship to relationship is a very minor part of the story but it's also constant throughout.

Dorian has been able to see ghosts since he was a child and as an adult he uses his ability to try and help ghosts pass to the other side, a ghost therapist if you will. At first I thought this was going to be a simple and sweet story of a man trying to get the living to understand and sympathize for the ghosts instead of fearing them, and while there was elements of that, it took some turns I was not expecting! My favorite aspect of the story was how it touched on mental health and on the balance of living for others vs living for yourself. The artwork is beautiful, the story is touching, and the characters are well rounded. Definitely one to pick up as soon as it releases!

Thank you to Penguin Teen for sending me an e-ARC of The Ghostkeeper!

The moment there was a ghost cat doing cat things, I knew this was gonna be a good one.

Dorian can see ghosts & he uses this power to be their therapist & help them get to the other side. Unfortunately, a ghost girl steals the key to the other side’s door & it’s up to Dorian to retrieve the key before it’s too late.

I absolutely adored the art style in this graphic novel, along with the characters we get to know throughout the tale. There’s a precious Queer relationship & The Ghostkeeper digs deep into mental health & grief.

A definite recommend from me!
