For him it was an acquired skill, like a second language.I have recently been introduced to the Detective Sergeant (DS) Cross books, a 7-book-and-counting series by Tim Sullivan.
'When sailors boiled meat, usually salted, fat or grease would form at the top of the pot. They would skim this off. It was called slush. The officers would then sell the slush to tallow makers and use the proceeds to make small purchases for the ship's crew. So it became known as the slush fund.'But more than anything, warts and all, and as more than one character indicates, Cross is oddly endearing:
'You know something, you'd be quite objectionable if you weren't so charming and sweet.'All told, an immensely satisfying and deliciously complex case. I will want to explore others.
