Middle school is all about change. In the opening section, girls take a quiz to determine how they respond to change, then receive tips on how to cope with the big changes that they're getting ready to face as they start middle school- switching classes, getting up earlier, and having their own lockers, all while learning to manage a new school, new teachers, new friends, and LOTS more homework and activities! The secret to feeling more confident as she starts middle school is having a little insight into what to expect. This book provides that information as well as "Smart Girl's tips" from girls who have already made the grade in the big school.
So when I first started middle school (6th grade for me) I was very nervous and afraid everyone would not like me (I was from a different district) and what my homework, schedule, teachers and classes would be like. I got this book before I went to middle school of coarse and I have been using it throughout my middle school years 6-7 and Im currently in 7th and things have been AWESOME (except for my skills in math sadly I will never be good at math) and I want to go to middle school every day! So if you or sibling are about to start middle school this is a good guide to get first!
It had some pretty good tips in it. Even my brother, who was scoffing at it earlier, took a peek at it and admitted it actually did have some good and true tips in it.
This book is great for any 5th grader starting middle school. It tells you where the best place to sit in class is, lets you take quizes, how to make new friends, and much more. ALL GIRLS READ THIS BOOK!
Well here it is, just 1.5 weeks until the beginning of middle school. She is experiencing a flood of different emotions about the transition and there are more questions than I can begin to answer. It was almost 20 years ago when I was in her shoes and "I don't remember" was only fueling her anxiety. We were visiting our local library when this book practically jumped off the shelves at her and in less than 30 minutes we were snuggled up on the couch beginning what would become one of the best books we have ever read together. Before we knew it, we were half way in and her questions about the new routine, class selections, navigating the halls, and dealing with bullies and mean girls were answered with optimism as if the author was speaking directly to her to address her concerns. We finished the whole book, all 90 pages and both quizzes, in one evening and then raved about it afterwards. Feeling a little less anxious and more excited than ever before, we are ready to take on middle school. You better believe I will be telling people in the halls about this book. Every new middle schooler should read it.
This seems like such a dumb book to read now, like why did I even bother worrying about it so much. But I did, and when I was all freaked out about going into middle school I was obsessed about reading this book. It does have lots of little helpful tips.
this book gave helpful information for all girls starting middle school. it told me what to look for on the first day of school to teacher's, to bullies!!!! i was well prepared for middle school after i read this book.
I have learned that middle school is going to be fun and busy. It is very complicated. But, for starters, I'll say that middle school is fun, but it includes lots and lots of homework, after-school sports, and way less time to play, relax and do a lot of fun stuff.
Do you need advice on starting middle school? Well this book is a great guide on how to do that! It has great tips from study habits to making friends. From opening your locker to how to make the grade. So are you stressed out about middle school? WELL READ THIS BOOK

This book is great for girls who are starting middle school. Once i finished reading it i was so ready for what was coming towards me because i wasn't afraid.
I got it as a christmas present and it was really good! It gave some really good advice, answered a lot of my problems and I could relate to it! TOTALLY RECOMMEND IT!
Found this book at Half-Price Books for a buck so I bought it for my cousin since she’ll be starting middle school in the fall, and also loves American Girl. Even though it was published in 2004, I think most of the tips and advice is still relevant for today’s girls. It briefly touches on a wide range of topics, from getting an organized morning routine, balancing a busy schedule, dealing with tough classes and teachers and making and maintaining friendships. I definitely could have used a book like this myself when I was starting middle school because it was TERRIFYING for me, so I hope this helps my cousin and anyone else who might be nervous going in to middle school!
Believe it or not this is actually a good advice book for girls starting middle school. I read this book before starting middle school and even though my 6th grade year sucked, this book still helped me out a little bit. I personally think middle school as a whole sucks. It is a rough time for everyone. Don’t give up if you’re feeling down in middle school. It gets better and plus high school is fun. I’ve enjoyed high school so far (well except for the covid part). I’ll be a senior this coming year and my advice to middle schoolers is to not bully each other and to be more accepting of those who are different from you.
This book was really helpful since I am starting middle school next year and I am feeling a little nervous. this book is really good but I am not a big fan of the art in it, oh well the book is helpful and good.
i really like this book because it is very helpful to those people who are clueless about middle school. I think that 6 or 7 graders will want to read this more.
This book is a very good read .I suggest it to anyone who is going into middle school, or who is already in it. And the way it shows you how to open your locker may not be right. I know it is different at my school.
We read some of it together, but mostly she read it on her own. I hope that she feels empowered and more confident during her transition from elementary school to middle school.
This book was fairly similar to others we've read in the series, but was more focused on the increased expectations as well as freedom that comes with the transition.
Our oldest felt like there were several situations that she really couldn't relate to, but on the whole, it was a helpful book that really gave her some insights into what to expect.
It's a fun, fast read and is a good addition to the Smart Girl's Guide series.
My Dad got me this book so that I can be ready for Middle School. I think that the book a smart girl's guide to starting middle school helped me a lot. Because now that I'm in middle school met a lot of friends & I know all the teachers. They are really cool!! I think that this book helped me & let me learn all about middle school & what to expect and handle things in school. I would read it again!!!
