Penny has a great boyfriend, the anti-Pyrite revolution continues to grow--everything seems like it's going great...or is it? With Hannah working some back-stabbing magic behind the scenes, Orion going from affectionate to clingy a little too quickly for comfort, and school and costume work piling up, Penny may be a little more over her head than head over heels! All of which gets exceedingly more complicated when she finds herself attracted to Pyrite-supreme Blake!
AAAAWWW NOOO!! Volume 3 was never made, because Tokyopop was shut down!! What an awful place to leave a cliffhanger! (It wasn't poorly written or set up; I'm just FRUSTRATED I can't find out what happens next...!) But, a decent story nonetheless. Obviously or I wouldn't be so worked up. Very much of a high school drama, and God knows how much I hate high school drama-ramas! But American manga is pretty unique, and whether or not I decide to own, or even read a manga, depends upon the artwork (Artwork alone is what got me into anime in the first place.) There's something different about this high school story; albeit a really stupid difference, I mean who wants to read a story where the main plot is a bunch of girls who start a club about whether the boys in school are jerks or not. But it gives me relief to know this isn't your boringly, typical, predictable, lovey-dovey shoujo manga. Honestly, I only bought these books because they're pretty rare, especially volume 2. But, I'm glad that I did, and I'm glad that they're a part of my collection; I'll definitely be reading them again.
All that Glitters is not Gold, and Not All Tales are Fully Told.
The second volume of Fool's Gold continues to up the stakes, add new perspectives, and poke holes in the idea that you can judge someone correctly so quickly.
I hate that at age 30 I finally looked at the cover and understood that Hannah is drawn with puppet strings because she spends this volume being blackmailed into being the villain of the story.
As a kid, I remember this book making me feel anxious/uncomfortable, which shows that it set out what it was intending to do. Which is funny because I usually love clingy/obsessive boyfriend characters... The only truly likeable character in the series by the end of this volume is Blake. I wonder how the others would've been redeemed if given the chance.
The Pride and Prejudice Parallel is even more apparent in this volume than the last. The back cover even makes the little, "It is a truth, universally acknowledged—" joke.
Knowing that Amy Reeder Hadley had no concrete plans on how to end this makes reading it a little funny. What was the endgame going to be if Book 3 was contractually obligated to hit the shelves? Was there even a hint of an idea? How would Penny have gotten out of this mess? This volume ends on a big cliffhanger, and I can only imagine it ending in catastrophe.
And imagining is all we're ever going to have, I suppose.
★★★☆☆ 3/5. And thus ends the story. In the middle. Forever. RIP TokyoPOP.
Ennél azért lehetett volna rafináltabb a szerző, ami a bonyodalmat illeti. Előtte azért egészen szépen alakítgatta a bonyodalmat, csak ezt a végét nem így kellett volna.
Remélem, iparkodik a 3. résszel, mert azért kíváncsi vagyok :)

This was just an enjoyable as the first one, but unfortunately ends without any resolution, since a third volume was never made. I will definitely be checking out other manga from this author though.
The unintended tragic cliffhanger of a cute series that explores interesting, messy teenage concepts all because the publishing company sadly shutdown. We’ll never see the concluding volume 3 and it’s still a shame.
I read the first volume of Fool's Gold sometime in high school, or maybe it was University, and I remember loving it. But I never had the money for volume 2, then Tokyopop shut down and the series never finished. I ended up tracking down volume 2 recently, so I decided to finally read the whole series (what there is of it).
I'm not likely to ever read this again.
Objectively, I can understand Reeder's intention with the story. The way it is written, I assume that the final volume was meant to turn the whole pyrite idea on its head, leaving us with the lesson that just because you aren't like that guy over there doesn't mean you are a better person. You might actually be just as awful and not even know it. But it takes a while for the story to show these intentions, and in the meantime, you come to hate every single character minus one. The best character in the entire story is Blake, and we spend the majority of the story watching him be maligned left and right when he doesn't deserve it. He's so obviously OCD and struggling with it, has a kind heart but doesn't know how to express it, comes across as standoffish against his own best intentions. He's just so dang sympathetic.
But Penny is just...terrible. Again, I can understand Reeder's intentions. We're obviously supposed to like and sympathize with Penny and appreciate her intentions, even if we disagree with her methods. But I didn't like her. I didn't sympathize with her. In fact, I quickly came to see her as the worst of all the awful characters in both books. She's selfish and arrogant and foolish and so incredibly lacking in wisdom. She starts the pyrite club under the guise of wanting to help girls, but I don't think she really wanted to help anyone. I think she wanted to feel superior.
I assume volume 3 was going to address this, and if a volume 3 were to ever be published (it obviously won't), I would be willing to read it and find out. But there would have to be a very strong turn-about for some of the characters in order to eliminate the distasteful feeling the first two volumes have left me with.

Note to self: The next time you start an OEL manga series, be sure that it's complete. I thought that Fool's Gold was complete in two volume, but the publisher was shut down and so goodbye to everyone.
At first it was a big confusing to re-enter the world created by Amy Reeder because the point of view changed but then Penny gained center stage again. I'm not sure I like her, though. The whole idea behind the geology club is sweet because she wants to protect her friends but it's also way wrong.
Orion is the real jerk here. How on earth does he know the combination of Penny's locker? And he's so clingy and needy that he gives me the creeps... Jeez, Penny is so worried about her friends that she doesn't she the danger right next to her.
I still love all the clothes designed by the author but I still think that she's not that good at drawing human bodies and expressions: some poses are just impossible. She has to works on the faces prospective as well.
OK, it was good as long as it lasted... Too bad I won't never find out what will happen with Blake.
Penny is head of a club dedicated to helping other girls avoid "pyrites," aka bad boys. Unfortunately Hannah is starting to work against her, from behind the scenes. Hannah is also being targeted by some boys who suspect her extracurricular activities, and Penny's boyfriend is starting to become more and more unstable. When she falls for Blake, the living definition of a pyrite, will things end well?
Good high school drama, and a bit brutal too. Very honest to life. Penny desperately wants to protect others from being hurt, but her naivety is setting her up for serious problems. Unfortunately it looks like we'll never see the conclusion, as Tokyopop folded in the States before the last volume could be released.
Penny returns in volume 2 with a great boyfriend and her anti-Pyrite club is going strong. But Hannah is secretly trying to bring the club down, and Penny's boyfriend Orion starts to act clingy and jealous. Penny can't keep up with her homework and she keeps forgetting to work on the costumes for the class play. To make matters worse, she finds herself daydreaming about Blake, a boy she thought she couldn't stand.
I knew Penny would get in trouble! :) The second volume made me very excited to go out and get the 3rd to find out what happens next. Penny is an enjoyable, believable, quirky heroine dealing with real issues and problems. Very good read.
Wow like watching a slow but inevitably bloody train wreck, poor Penny. The teenage bad decisions piled up into a mess of a mountain that made me cringe but continued to engage me, and the art and fun outfits never ceased to please. The story ends on an ultimate cliffhanger but alas the series is unfinished and there's no more to discover how Penny ever gets herself off mess mountain. Shame, just one more volume and she could've finally found happiness...
This volume felt a little rush, but it's only a three volume storyline. It's still worth the read and I can't wait to see the third volume. The artwork is still very nice!
Penny's kind of irritating. How can she possibly know everything when she's barely dated anyone? And then she doesn't recognize the pyrite behavior of her own boyfriend. Hmmmm...
