This book was so disappointing, I thought it would be a continuation of Effie's story, but instead it was completely new one and I really disliked Mhairri and Donald. Their relationship lacked so much depth and it felt very juvenile. Donald had no personality and I couldn't understand why he was in love with Mhairri aside from the fact that he was in an unhappy marriage. Mhairri was so distraught by Alexandre and the things he did, but yet she was willing to overstep her boundaries and risk everything for a married man? It didn't make sense and If found it mostly annoying.
We got very little resolution on the cliff hanger from book 1.
The pacing for this book also felt very off. The first half was a bit slow, which I didn't mind mostly but then the second half was too fast and Swan glosses over some pretty major key events. Chapters kept ending on a cliff hanger and then the next pagers didn't give us any resolution, they just skipped over the major event and had like 1 or 2 lines explaining what happened. It's like the author was afraid to show us these characters going through difficult things.
I really enjoyed book 1, we got so much depth into the struggle of life on St Kilda and the characters had more vivid personalities and their relationship made sense. We got none of that in this book and are still left with another very unsatisfying ending.

Vyras, prie kurio linksta Mairės širdis, nelaisvas vesti, o ji – nebelaisva nesituokti. Tai uždraustos meilės istorija. 😉 Kuri labai smagiai susiklausė, patiko taip pat kaip ir pirmoji dalis. Belieka laukti kol pasirodys kitos dalys audiotekoje. 😉 👍🎧

The Stolen Hours is the second book in The Wild Isle series and is just as fabulously intriguing as the first. I love that Karen Swan has added a note to the reader in the front of the book giving a quick recap of the first book, The Last Summer.
I thought I had it all worked out at the end of the first book however this startling new story, set over the same time period, only from a different character's POV, left me with more questions and serious doubt as to my previous thoughts.
The Stolen Hours is from Effie's good friend Mhairi's point of view. Mhairi takes a trip to the island of Harris to meet a farmer in need of a wife. Whilst away from her family Mhairi falls in love; but not with the man she is now obligated to marry. Christianity and God's wrath weigh in heavily in this novel and Mhairi's concerns for her virtue are real. She feels like a fallen woman, through no fault of her own, and these feelings go on to manufacture the course of her last few months on St Kilda.
I loved seeing Effie from a different point of view and since this book's focus is on Mhairi I was feeling a compulsion to reread The Last Summer to see what hints I had missed about Mhairi's life.
Even though this book is set over the same time period with the same characters it is a whole separate story. So don't think this will be a rehash of a plot you have read before.
A bitter winter in a harsh unforgiving land and a village that works as one; betrothals, secrets, death, superstitions, loyalty and friendships, The Stolen Hours is a must read.

June 30, 2024Šios autorės romanus skaitau vos išleistus. Kai kurios istorijos susijusios, kai kurios - ne. Bet kaskart randu lengvumą sunkumuose, šviesą, kai sunku, moterų tinkamus sprendimus, kai situacija atrodo beviltiška.
Šiame romane dar daug buvo sudėtingų situacijų, nes
a) esame taip mokytos, net minčių nekyla galvoti kitaip
b) kitų gyvenimai svarbesni, nei mano
Gera, kad pabaigoje visa tai buvo peržengta ir atsisukta į save. Kai imi galvoti, o kaip gali būti kitaip, ir aplinka padeda. beje, ne tik romanuose. Tik verta pamatyti galimybes. Net ir labai mažas.
Šiame romane dar daug buvo sudėtingų situacijų, nes

Absorbing, passionate, and thrilling!
The Stolen Hours is a compelling tale that sweeps you away to 1929 and into the life of Mhairi MacKinnon, one of Effie’s best friends and another one of the thirty-six inhabitants of the small island of St. Kilda, who, on her brief travels to Harris to meet the man she will likely become engaged to, realizes the one she truly loves but who is already sworn to another has always been living right beside her, and when the government decides to evacuate the island villagers and move them permanently to the mainland, time is running out, her new married life is about to begin, and with a heart shattered to pieces and the life she always wanted merely now but a dream she may also have more than one reason to want the de facto ruler of the island, Frank Mathieson, dead.
The writing is expressive and rich. The characters are hardworking, fierce, and loyal. And the plot is an enchanting tale of life, loss, family, friendship, community, drama, mystery, intrigue, responsibilities, expectations, heartbreak, and forbidden love.
Overall, The Stolen Hours is another mysterious, captivating, highly immersive tale by Swan that kept me engaged from start to finish with its rugged depictions of island living and layered, complex, romantic entanglements and even though it’s only the second book in The Wild Isle trilogy, I can already tell this is definitely going to be one of my favourite historical fiction series of all time.

Pirmoji pažintis su "Laukinės salos" serija buvo tikrai vykusi. Tikrai įtraukiantis romanas, kurį taip ir norisi skaityti. Tad nieko nelaukdama pasiėmiau skaityti antrą serijos knygą.
Šį kartą istorijos pagrindinė veikėja - Mairė. Ji yra vyriausioji dukra iš devynių vaikų šeimos. Tad gyvenimas jai ir jos šeimai nėra lengvas. Tad mergina norėdama nors šiek tiek palengvinti savo tėvams naštą, planuoja susirasti vyrą ir ištekėti.
Šeimos draugas Donaldas nusprendžia ją palydėti kelionės metu. Jie išplaukia į gretimą salą, kur Mairė susipažįsta su ūkininku Aleksandru. Vos trys naktys svetur, tačiau Mairės gyvenimas pakrypsta netikėta linkme. Ir ji įsimyli ne tą vyrą, kurį priklauso..
Skaudu man buvo skaityti šią istoriją dėl neteisybės, kurią teko patirti Mairei. Skaitant atrodė, jog vienintelė jos kaltė yra ta, jog ji gimė moterimi. Ir tuomet prisimeni visus įvykius, kurie vyksta aplinkui ir supranti, jog nedaug kas tepasikeitė nuo anų laikų..
Autorė sukūrė įtraukiančią istoriją, kurios metu išsirutuliojo daug įvykių ir jie nulėmė tolimesnę istorijos eigą.
Meilė, skausmas, draugystė bei išdavystė.. Tai tik keletas šioje knygoje aptariamų jausmų.
Man tikrai patinka ši Swan serija. Mielai pratęsiu ją kitais metais 🥰

Visai neplanuota ir žiauria linkme pasisukus Mairės likimui, ji susiduria su didžiausia neišvengiamybe - ji privalo tekėti už to vyro, kuriam jos širdis nepriklauso. O tas, kurio meilė Mairei trenkė it žaibas iš giedro dangaus, niekada jai nepriklausė ir nepriklausys. Salai besiruošiant didžiąjam išsikraustymui, dienoms kapsint iki pažadėtųjų vestuvių, mylimiesiems telieka tik pavogtos valandos…
Aš, turbūt, kad ir ką paimsiu šios autorės skaityt, niekada nenustosiu žavėtis! Iš kiekvienos knygos visada sulaukiu kokybės, patrauklaus rašymo stiliaus, įtraukiančio veiksmo ir žinoma - meilės su puikiu prieskoniu skaudžių išgyvenimų. Su šia serija autorė pasiryžo prie visko įtraukti ir kitokį siužetą - paslaptinga mirtis salose prieš visiems išsikraustant. Su Metisonu visi turėjo savotiškų sąskaitų, o jo elgesys su pamiltais veikėjais mažų mažiausiai verčia manyti, jog jis to nusipelnė. Bet kiekvieno iš jų likimas apkarsta vykstant tyrimui, o autorė vis nuslepia tikrąjį kaltininką. Tad Mairės istorija man pasirodė itin dramatiška - didžiulė traumuojančių įvykių našta, išsiskyrimo bei praradimo skausmas, o kur dar baisinga gresianti lemtis - tekėti už nemylimo, kai širdis pasilikusi kitoje vandens pusėje. Gal man Mairės istorija ir nebuvo labiau mėgstama nei Efės, bet ji atskleidė dar nežinomų serijos detalių bei taip supynė visas intrigas, kad pabaigoje aš niekaip negalėjau nuspėti laukiančių įvykių!
Ne tik labai rekomenduoju šią autorę ieškant ypatingų istorijų, bet ir ši serija tikrai įtrauks taip, kad norėsis nieko nelaukiant čiupti sekančią jos dalį!

After loving the first book in this series, I couldn't connect with Mhairi's story. I so wanted to love this book. While I had empathy for her situation, loving another woman's husband is wrong.
I have no faith that their relationship will be able to stand since it was begun illicit. Once the initial attraction wanes, what is left?
The plot has at least two major time gaps and it was hard to understand the backstop provided.
I loved most of the people in Harris. Especially the community that supported Mhairi. I wonder if any of those characters will return in the next book.
I do think Swan did a terrific job with intertwining Mhairi's and Effie's stories. There was enough plot to remind me of Effie's trials without duplicating the details in The Last Summer.

I read this poolside in Tunisia and it was the perfect Summer read! This is my favourite series so far from Karen Swan and I have read a few.

I loved this book, BUT my one criticism is that I could not believe the lack of mourning Mhairi expressed over her lost child. And when it was revealed at the end that she had a stillborn daughter, I just became so confused as to whose baby Mary had? Was it Mary’s baby after all? Had Mhairi been pregnant with twins?
Either way, as a mom myself, I feel that the heartbreak of losing your child would outweigh every other hardship she faced and been front of mind. Her lack of obsession for her lost baby felt inauthentic to me.
Still, great story, great series! I will definitely be recommending it.

Another majestic masterpiece.
The story was captivating - I have remembered and noticed all the little twists and mentions from the first book and loved how the story was told from another point of view yet containing all those other links with book one.
Even though I am now convinced it was Maria - but still can't wait for the 3rd book and see which St. Kildian's story the author will tell next. Maybe Floras?🤞
I absolutely adored reading about Oban in 1930 and how it became home for some of them - you can find a mention of Oban's police station, Royal hotel, the harbour.. Seemed surreal
Even though the people and their stories are made up, but it still tickles the hippocampus, and you want to learn more and more about this mysterious island.

Istorija išties įtraukianti bei kupina užuominų ir mažų ženklų kurie istorijai suteikė daug gyvasties. Tai, kad šioje knygoje istorija yra sekama kito Kildiečio akimis - tik suaštrina intrigą, leisdama dar kartą apmastyti ir pirmosios knygos istorijos vingius.
Nors ir širdyje jaučiu, kad tai Marijos darbas, bet laukte laukiu tęsinio iš kito Kildiečio pasaulėžiūros taško. Galbūt kita bus Floros istorija? 🤞
Taip pat nuostabu buvo skaityti apie po1930ųjų metų dangumi augantį ir besiplečiantį Obano miestelį kuris keliems Kildiečiams tapo nauji namai po iškraustymo.
Apart pačios salos ir vietovių, tiek žmonės tiek jų istorijos yra išgalvotos, bet tikrai pakutena ir pakrutina tiek protą tiek sielą.

February 21, 2025Karen Swan yra vaizdinių meistrė! Taip aiškiai ir jautriai ji aprašo gamtą, klimatą ir vietoves. Dėl žmonių nesu įsitikinusi. Na, bent jau šioj knygoj - kažkokie bestuburiai jie man pasirodė - keisti jų norai, veiksmai ir sprendimai. Aišku, gal ir būna tokių žmonių, bet su tokiais vargu ar susidraugaučiau… Šiaip Mairės istorija įdomi, veiksmas nestovi vietoj, vis papildo net ir pirmos knygos (rašytos iš Efės perspektyvos) spragas. Laukiu jų draugės Floros dalies ir trilogijos atomazgos.

Most of you will know that I’ve been reading Karen Swan books for a long, long time now. I was really impressed by the first book in her new historical fiction series, The Last Summer, which was published last year. It was left on such a cliffhanger that I was desperate for the second book. The Stolen Hours focuses on another of the inhabitants of St. Kilda and gives some more details on what, exactly, happened on that last night on the island.
I wasn’t sure how Swan would start off this one. Would it be an immediate sequel, picking up exactly where book one left off? Would the cliffhanger from book one be resolved by the end of book two? It turns out the answer is no to both. I KNOW. I need answers. But I also really appreciate what Swan is doing. This is an ongoing saga and to know the full story, you have to have multiple stories. Instead of continuing where Effie’s story left off, Swan goes back in time and then moves forward to the evacuation once again but this time from Mhairi’s perspective. There were some overlapping stories where pieces from book one started to make a little more sense but there was a lot of new information as well so I wasn’t bored by any repetitive details.
I was, however, a little less…engaged? Maybe? In Mhairi’s story. I loved her, don’t get me wrong. But there were a ton of aspects about that time period that just drove me (and my modern sensibilities) bonkers. I tried to temper that because it’s not fair to put my beliefs and expectations onto characters whose lives are very, very different from my own. When I was able to tamp down my 2023 expectations, I was glad to get a glimpse of what life was/could have been like for women on St. Kilda at that time. I don’t think I would have dealt with it well for all kinds of reasons!
I want to be careful not to share too much about this story because I do think the series needs to be read in order plus there are revelations in this one that I want to keep quiet. Though I will say I did NOT see any of that coming and I wonder how much I may have missed in book one or if Swan cleverly hid some of these details. Whatever it was, it worked for me! I didn’t love some of it but I appreciated how it was all revealed.

I really enjoy Karen Swann's seasonal books and have read quite a few now so was drawn to the Wild Isle series. Having read the first in the series last year , I was keen to find out what would happen next as the first book finished quite abruptly. The story picks up again on St Kilda, taking us back in time so that we see events unfolding through Mhairi's eyes. Mhairi's family are large and so it is decided that she needs to find a husband so that her family does not need to support her. One of the fellow islanders Donald is due to go to Harris before the island is cut off and becomes the chaperone for Mhairi.
During this trip, Mhairi's sensibilities are challenged and she realises that is not the handsome Alexander who has taken her heart but her married chaperone Donald. She agrees to be affianced to Alexander but struggles to quash her feelings for Donald and is delighted to discover that her feelings are reciprocated. Alongside this, the government agrees to finally evacuate St Kilda so the lovers have a short time before they must leave the island. As they finally leave to make new lives on the main land, it comes to light that a dead body has been found on the island. Our heroine, Mhairi, comes under suspicion and has to make a bold decision as to what she can reveal about what occurred on the island.
This is a really good read but I have dropped one star as I was once again frustrated by the ending. Like the first in the series, it ends abruptly without providing a satisfactory conclusion to the story. I'm hopeful that the third part will satisfactorily resolve the story.

Kokia liūdna ir neteisinga Mairės istorija! Pradžioje kiek jautės tai, jog padariau gan nemažą pertrauką po pirmosios dalies, tai teko iš naujo prisijaukinti Sent Kildos salą ir jos gyventojus. Tačiau įsivažiavus puslapiai skriete skriejo! Širdžiai neįsakysi, ypač jei ta meilė uždrausta… autorė puikiai perteikė ir su tuo ateinančius skaudulius…

Ich finde die Art und Weise wie diese Reihe erzählt wird total interessant, denn obwohl jede Freundin ihr eigenes Buch mit ihrer eigenen Geschichte hat, spielen die Bücher doch alle zur selben Zeit. Und obwohl es genau dieselbe Zeitspanne ist und man durchaus auch ein paar Dinge erfährt, bei denen man sich denkt "ahh ich weiß welche Szene das in Band 1 war" oder "ich erinnere mich warum dies und jenes passiert ist", habe ich zu keiner Zeit das Gefühl gehabt etwas wiederholt sich, denn Fakt ist man liest hier eine komplett neue Story. Das liebe ich, denn es zeigt wie gut ausgearbeitet diese Geschichte ist. 😍
Was an diesem Buch (ebenso wie an Band 1) besonders ist, ist die Tatsache, dass unglaublich viel auch zwischen den Zeilen erzählt wird, d.h. man muss tatsächlich auch gut aufpassen. Auch in Band 1 gab es da ein paar Szenen, die in meinen Augen erst später Sinn gemacht haben, jedoch hatte ich in diesem zweiten Band häufiger dieses Gefühl. Manchmal war ich von Geschehnissen verwirrt und habe nicht wirklich verstanden was in einer Szene gerade passiert ist, weshalb ich dann beim Lesen nicht mehr richtig hinterherkam.
Einerseits finde ich das unglaublich authentisch, denn natürlich machen diverse Gepflogenheiten, die für die Menschen auf St Kilda normal sind, für mich keinen Sinn, denn diese Sitten sind vielleicht völlig veraltet und natürlich waren die Bewohner von St Kilda größtenteils von der Zivilisation abgeschnitten.
Da diese Momente beim Lesen von Band 2 jedoch häufiger passiert sind als in Band 1 haben sie meinen Lesefluss ein wenig beeinträchtigt und in der ein oder anderen Szene hätte ich mir einfach ein paar mehr erklärende Worte gewünscht um "mitzukommen".
Nichtsdestotrotz finde ich das übergreifende Mysterium um den Mord total spannend und freue mich bereits darauf im nächsten Band nach St Kilda zurückzukehren. 😊

This time we follow Mhairi on her adventures from St Kitts to the mainland.
To being promised to someone, then falling for a local, to the evacuation and being stuck back with her betrothed.
We get more of the island life this time. We see her fall for Donald. We only hear about a Effie and sholto second hand accounts of them falling in love and her getting her job with them.
Mhairi is known she'll have to marry but she finds her heart makes it harder. we once think of her as meek but she is as tough as anyone when push comes to shove! We have a somewhat close but not a complete. So the third will wrap this all up? Guessing we'll follow Flora in the next. Now to wait and see.

Hoewel ik me de cliffhanger van deel 1 nog goed kon herinneren, was de rest van het verhaal wat weggezakt. Dus het kostte me een aantal hoofdstukken voor ik er weer in zat. Maar hoe fijn om weer terug te zijn op het eiland St. Kilda. Dit deel speelt zich (deels) af voor het verhaal van deel 1; dus bleef die cliffhanger lekker hangen 😉.
Het verhaal van Mhairi is vol drama. Waar ze op het eerste gezicht stil en bedachtzaam overkomt, verandert dat gedurende het verhaal. Karen Swan neemt echt de tijd genomen om een beeldende omschrijving neer te zetten. Ik vind dat echt heerlijk; alsof ik zelf ook op het eiland aanwezig ben. Maar maakt dit boek wel minder 'snel', dan andere verhalen van haar.
Naar het einde toe wordt het echt spannend en zijn er de nodige losse eindjes. Of deel 3 alle antwoorden heeft? Ik hoop het; al komt die helaas pas in het najaar van 2024 uit!

Olipa ihanaa palata Hirtan saarelle ja päästä kurkistamaan toisen keskeisen hahmon elämään ja ihmissuhteisiin. Tämä oli jopa enemmän tunteisiin vetoava kuin ensimmäinen osa, jossa nautin enemmän Hirtan saaren karun arkielämän kuvailusta. Tämä osa keskittyi enemmän ihmissuhdekiemuroihin, kolmiodraamaan, kiellettyyn rakkauteen ja vaikeisiin olosuhteisiin. Viihdyin kerrassaan hyvin tämän parissa, enkä malta odottaa kolmanteen osaan tarttumista.

Ondanks mijn twijfel na het eerste deel van deze trilogie, kon dit boek me meer bekoren en mijn aandacht vasthouden. Misschien voelde ik meer affiniteit met het hoofdpersonage door wiens ogen deze keer het verhaal verteld werd. Ik ben alvast enthousiast aan deel 3 begonnen.

I was extremely excited to read this second book in Karen's Swan's series. The first showed what a departure it was from her usual stand-alone stories. However, the level of detail and evident research made that a compelling read.
The Stolen Hours was no different. Written at a parallel time to the first, we see events unfold through the eyes of the second of a trio of friends from St Kilda. The first was Effie's view. This time we learned more about Mhaira.
The oldest daughter of the postmaster, and one of many children, it is high time for her to marry.
Since the island is small and there are scarce prospects, a man is suggested from one of the neighbouring isles.
She meets him and finds some attraction, but confusion sets in as certain feelings she experiences may not be appropriate, especially as they are not all for the man to be her intended.
Back on the isle, there are further problems, which we already know, as a reader, if the first book has been read. Mhaira has several more worries of her own on top of that.
I don't want to spill the beans, as that would ruin it for a prospective reader.
The journey we started at the end of book one is extended further at the end of this book, with the mystery surrounding the factor's death on the island, the day the inhabitants had to evacuate, which is left unsolved, obviously to be revealed during the next book, I guess, but we are given plenty more backstory for the characters we got to know in the first book, as well as more of a glimpse into their futures on the mainland.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next book!

The second installment in Karen Swan's The Wild Isle Series about St. Kilda in the Scottish Isles told from the perspective of Mhairi MacKinnon, a close friend of Effie Gillies from the first book (The Last Summer). The timeline overlaps a bit with the first book and provides more information about the islanders and clues relating to the central mystery of the series - was the factor murdered on St. Kilda at the time of evacuation and, if so, by who? A great read with all the mystery, romance, and sense of place that is to be expected from a Karen Swan novel but it doesn't work as a standalone - it's a commitment to a 5 book series or you will be disappointed to be left hanging as it doesn't appear that the mystery will be resolved until the final book.

I am officially taking a year break from Swan.
I had high expectations with this sequel, given how much I liked The Last Summer.
Oh boy, what a disappointment!
The plot - all over the place. Terribly slow the first half and rushed the second half, without intelligent connection.
The MC - poorly developed, and with a forced chemistry that made them unrealistic and unlikeable. I didn’t care for any of them.
The landscape - decent but overly detailed, bordering on boring.
The End - &@$%#!
It had great potential, but became no more than another cheap Historical Drama.
A waste of my precious time 🫤

tän kirjan luettuani mun ajatukset oli niin sekasin kun voi olla. sain luettua tän myöhään yöllä, enkä sillon pystynyt yhtään sanomaan, montako tähteä tää ansaitsis tai sanomaan mitään kommentteja tästä. sulattelin kirjaa yön yli (en saanut nukahdettua kun tää pyöri päässä...) eikä nyt oo ajatukset juurikaan sen selvemmät kun sillon. mut yritän nyt koota itseni ja saada annettua tälle jotain tähtiä. tiedän jo valmiiks et tästä on tulossa huomattavasti pidempi arvostelu kun mun aiemmista, mut jotenkin tuntuu tän kohdalla et haluun kirjottaa ajatuksia (jotka on kaoottisia) ylös.
alotan arvostelun sillä, että tää oli sarjassaan toinen kirja; ekasta osasta en näköjään ollut hirveesti sinne arvosteluun kirjoittanut, mut totean lyhyesti et RAKASTIN sitä ihan tosi paljon, monesta syystä. niinpä odotin tätä jatko-osaa innoissani, koska se eka oli päättynyt maailmanluokan pahimpaan cliffhangeriin. saatuani tän jatko-osan käsiini olin kuitenkin hiukan pettynyt, kun selvis et tää on kerrottu eri henkilön näkökulmasta kun se eka. olin (ja olen edelleen) nimittäin tosi kiintynyt siihen ekan kirjan päähenkilöön ja hänen elämäänsä, ja olin kuvitellut et tää toinen kirja tavallaan jatkais vaan siitä kutkuttavasta kohdasta mihin eka jäi. näin ei kuitenkaan ollut. vaivuinkin siis hetken epätoivoon, kun olisin halunnut näkökulman pysyvän samana seuraavissakin sarjan osissa. vähän lohtua toi sentään kirjailijan lupaus siitä, et tässä kirjassa kaikesta huolimatta saadaan vastauksia ekan osan jättämiin kysymyksiin. sen voimalla lähdinkin sitten kirjaa lukemaan ja odotin palavasti mysteerin selviämistä (sen tosin tiesin, ettei se kokonaan tässä ratkea, sillä sarjaan on tulossa vieläkin jatkoa, ilmeisesti kaks kirjaa).
kirjan alku oli tosi tylsä, siis TOSI tylsä. siinä ei tapahtunut yhtään mitään ja ajattelinkin et näinkö paljon tää taso floppaa sarjan ekasta kirjasta. aluks annoin tän anteeks, koska tiesin et tässä tulee kuitenkin tipahtelemaan uusia johtolankoja edellisen kirjan jättämään mysteeriin. spoilers: näin ei ollutkaan... tän kirjan lukemisen ois kirjaimellisesti voinut alottaa sivulta 400... ainoastaan IHAN lopussa tapahtu jotain oleellista. tai no oikeestaan ois voinut kyllä skipata tän koko kirjan - ei tässä tapahtunut mitään elintärkeän oleellista itse mysteerin kannalta. ois melkein voinut hypätä suoraan ekasta kirjasta kolmanteen (olettaen et siinä tää mysteeri alkaa aueta vähän enemmän...)
jaksoin lukea tän kirjan ainoastaan sen avonaisen mysteerin voimalla. jos oisin tiennyt, että tässä kirjassa ei tule lähes mitään uusia johtolankoja, en olis jaksanut lukea tätä ollenkaan. en nimittäin tykännyt tästä muilta osin yhtään. kirjan juoni oli huono, jotenkin aivan liian laimea. eka puolikas oli JÄRKYTTÄVÄN hidastempoinen, loppu taas eteni ehkä vähän liiankin harppoen. mua ei kirjan aikana oikeestaan yhtään kiinnostanut mitä tän päähenkilön elämässä tapahtuu - paitsi jos se oli jotenkin oleellista mysteerin kannalta. en tykännyt päähenkilöstä kovinkaan paljoa: hän ja hänen ihmissuhteensa oli niin turhauttavia ja ärsyttäviä eikä häneen kiintynyt ollenkaan samalla lailla kun ekan kirjan päähenkilöön. tästä myös puuttu jotenkin samanlainen syvyys mitä siinä edellisessä kirjassa oli.
kirja oli paikoin aika epämukavaa ja raskastakin lukea. kyseessä oli 18-vuotias tyttö, jonka pakkoaviomies (onks se mikään oikee termi edes, haha) oli 26-vuotias ja tytön oikea rakkauden kohde oli 29-vuotias (jos en nyt ihan väärin muista - en jaksa tarkistaakaan, mutta ikäeroa oli kuitenkin HUOMATTAVASTI). vaikka tää oli tietysti kirjan tapahtuma-aikaan, -paikkaan ja sen henkilöiden elämäntapaan nähden ihan normaalia, itseäni silti lukijana häiritsi asia. myös jotkut muut tässä tapahtuneet asiat, jotka ois pitänyt ajatella kirjan kontekstissa normaaliksi, teki lukemisesta hieman epämiellyttävää, ja toisaalta niiden sivuuttaminenkin oli vaikeeta, koska ne itsessään oli vähän niinku sen kirjan juoni...
täytyy valittaa vielä kirjan lopetuksesta: se oli huono. tiedän, että valitin ekan kirjan massiivisen cliffhanger-lopun jälkeen, että "ei näin saa tehdä ihmiselle!!!", mutta se oli silti tavallaan just hyvä lopetus sille kirjalle. tääkin kirja loppui cliffhangeriin, mutta jotenkin liian lepsuun sellaiseen: olisin kaivannyt jotain jymypaukkua viimeiseen pariin lauseeseen, kuten edellisessä. ja tiedän et on varmaan vähän tyhmää verrata tässä kaikkea mahdollista ekaan kirjaan, mut ei voi mitään. tää on osa sarjaa ja rakastin ekaa osaa, joten oisin halunnut rakastaa tätäkin.
nyt kun oon räntänny tätä kirjaa (syystäkin?) niin pitää kai mainita jotain positiivisiakin asioita. ensinnäkin siis rakastan tän sarjan miljöötä ja kylämäisen yhteisön ja sen ihmisten välistä tiivistä suhdetta - parin kilometrin pituisella saarella kun asui vain 36 ihmistä. kirjailija on kyllä tehnyt hyvää työtä ottaessaan selvää tästä tapahtumapaikasta ja siellä joskus eläneiden ihmisten kulttuurista. tää kirja siis pohjautuu ihan oikeastikin olemassaolevaan St. Kildan saariryhmään Skotlannin lähellä (tai siis kaukana avomerellä). ihmiset evakuointiin sieltä vuonna 1930, mistä lähtien saari on ollut asuttamaton. en ollut ite kuullutkaan tällaisesta paikasta mitään ennen - tää kirjasarja herätti kyllä mielenkiintoni paikkaa ja sen tapahtumia kohtaan.
mutta takaisin negatiivisiin asioihin, ettei vaan jää liian positiivinen kuva tästä, haha. kirjan lukemisen jälkeinen fiilis on ERITTÄIN TURHAUTUNUT: eipä mysteeri ratkennut yhtään lisää... ja vielä pahemman tästä fiiliksestä tekee se, et luulin rakastuvani tähänkin osaan ainakin melkein yhtä paljon kun edelliseen. siks tää oli aivan valtava pettymys. mut nyt vaan kolmatta osaa odotellessa: odotukset sitä kohtaan nousi pilviin - siinä ois parempi tapahtua jotain...
alotan arvostelun sillä, että tää oli sarjassaan toinen kirja; ekasta osasta en näköjään ollut hirveesti sinne arvosteluun kirjoittanut, mut totean lyhyesti et RAKASTIN sitä ihan tosi paljon, monesta syystä. niinpä odotin tätä jatko-osaa innoissani, koska se eka oli päättynyt maailmanluokan pahimpaan cliffhangeriin. saatuani tän jatko-osan käsiini olin kuitenkin hiukan pettynyt, kun selvis et tää on kerrottu eri henkilön näkökulmasta kun se eka. olin (ja olen edelleen) nimittäin tosi kiintynyt siihen ekan kirjan päähenkilöön ja hänen elämäänsä, ja olin kuvitellut et tää toinen kirja tavallaan jatkais vaan siitä kutkuttavasta kohdasta mihin eka jäi. näin ei kuitenkaan ollut. vaivuinkin siis hetken epätoivoon, kun olisin halunnut näkökulman pysyvän samana seuraavissakin sarjan osissa. vähän lohtua toi sentään kirjailijan lupaus siitä, et tässä kirjassa kaikesta huolimatta saadaan vastauksia ekan osan jättämiin kysymyksiin. sen voimalla lähdinkin sitten kirjaa lukemaan ja odotin palavasti mysteerin selviämistä (sen tosin tiesin, ettei se kokonaan tässä ratkea, sillä sarjaan on tulossa vieläkin jatkoa, ilmeisesti kaks kirjaa).
kirjan alku oli tosi tylsä, siis TOSI tylsä. siinä ei tapahtunut yhtään mitään ja ajattelinkin et näinkö paljon tää taso floppaa sarjan ekasta kirjasta. aluks annoin tän anteeks, koska tiesin et tässä tulee kuitenkin tipahtelemaan uusia johtolankoja edellisen kirjan jättämään mysteeriin. spoilers: näin ei ollutkaan... tän kirjan lukemisen ois kirjaimellisesti voinut alottaa sivulta 400... ainoastaan IHAN lopussa tapahtu jotain oleellista. tai no oikeestaan ois voinut kyllä skipata tän koko kirjan - ei tässä tapahtunut mitään elintärkeän oleellista itse mysteerin kannalta. ois melkein voinut hypätä suoraan ekasta kirjasta kolmanteen (olettaen et siinä tää mysteeri alkaa aueta vähän enemmän...)
jaksoin lukea tän kirjan ainoastaan sen avonaisen mysteerin voimalla. jos oisin tiennyt, että tässä kirjassa ei tule lähes mitään uusia johtolankoja, en olis jaksanut lukea tätä ollenkaan. en nimittäin tykännyt tästä muilta osin yhtään. kirjan juoni oli huono, jotenkin aivan liian laimea. eka puolikas oli JÄRKYTTÄVÄN hidastempoinen, loppu taas eteni ehkä vähän liiankin harppoen. mua ei kirjan aikana oikeestaan yhtään kiinnostanut mitä tän päähenkilön elämässä tapahtuu - paitsi jos se oli jotenkin oleellista mysteerin kannalta. en tykännyt päähenkilöstä kovinkaan paljoa: hän ja hänen ihmissuhteensa oli niin turhauttavia ja ärsyttäviä eikä häneen kiintynyt ollenkaan samalla lailla kun ekan kirjan päähenkilöön. tästä myös puuttu jotenkin samanlainen syvyys mitä siinä edellisessä kirjassa oli.
kirja oli paikoin aika epämukavaa ja raskastakin lukea. kyseessä oli 18-vuotias tyttö, jonka pakkoaviomies (onks se mikään oikee termi edes, haha) oli 26-vuotias ja tytön oikea rakkauden kohde oli 29-vuotias (jos en nyt ihan väärin muista - en jaksa tarkistaakaan, mutta ikäeroa oli kuitenkin HUOMATTAVASTI). vaikka tää oli tietysti kirjan tapahtuma-aikaan, -paikkaan ja sen henkilöiden elämäntapaan nähden ihan normaalia, itseäni silti lukijana häiritsi asia. myös jotkut muut tässä tapahtuneet asiat, jotka ois pitänyt ajatella kirjan kontekstissa normaaliksi, teki lukemisesta hieman epämiellyttävää, ja toisaalta niiden sivuuttaminenkin oli vaikeeta, koska ne itsessään oli vähän niinku sen kirjan juoni...
täytyy valittaa vielä kirjan lopetuksesta: se oli huono. tiedän, että valitin ekan kirjan massiivisen cliffhanger-lopun jälkeen, että "ei näin saa tehdä ihmiselle!!!", mutta se oli silti tavallaan just hyvä lopetus sille kirjalle. tääkin kirja loppui cliffhangeriin, mutta jotenkin liian lepsuun sellaiseen: olisin kaivannyt jotain jymypaukkua viimeiseen pariin lauseeseen, kuten edellisessä. ja tiedän et on varmaan vähän tyhmää verrata tässä kaikkea mahdollista ekaan kirjaan, mut ei voi mitään. tää on osa sarjaa ja rakastin ekaa osaa, joten oisin halunnut rakastaa tätäkin.
nyt kun oon räntänny tätä kirjaa (syystäkin?) niin pitää kai mainita jotain positiivisiakin asioita. ensinnäkin siis rakastan tän sarjan miljöötä ja kylämäisen yhteisön ja sen ihmisten välistä tiivistä suhdetta - parin kilometrin pituisella saarella kun asui vain 36 ihmistä. kirjailija on kyllä tehnyt hyvää työtä ottaessaan selvää tästä tapahtumapaikasta ja siellä joskus eläneiden ihmisten kulttuurista. tää kirja siis pohjautuu ihan oikeastikin olemassaolevaan St. Kildan saariryhmään Skotlannin lähellä (tai siis kaukana avomerellä). ihmiset evakuointiin sieltä vuonna 1930, mistä lähtien saari on ollut asuttamaton. en ollut ite kuullutkaan tällaisesta paikasta mitään ennen - tää kirjasarja herätti kyllä mielenkiintoni paikkaa ja sen tapahtumia kohtaan.

UNA TOPPA
Non ho fatto in tempo ad entusiasmarmi per questo nuovo romanzo estivo di Karen Swan che mi sono resa conto che si trattava del seguito de "L'ultima estate con te", il cui ricordo negativo era ancora impresso nella mia mente.
Fortunatamente, la vicenda di Mhairi mi ha appassionata di più (merito del triangolo amoroso con Donald e Alexander), ma ho comunque trovato la narrazione un po' monotona. Di nuovo motivo di rabbia è stato il finale aperto, che fornisce comunque più risposte rispetto al volume precedente.
"Non era tanto un lieto fine, quanto un inizio imperfetto, ma l'accettava di buon grado: già, perché una toppa era sempre meglio di un buco."

Mano "guilty pleasure". Turiu pora tokių, kurias po "rimtų knygų", kai norisi galvą pravėdinti - į sąrašėlį įtraukiu. Pirmos dalies pabaigą dėl jos įtampos ir pabaigimo tokiu intriguojančiu klausimu pavadinau "nelegalia" ir vis dar laikausi tos pozicijos. Na o atsivertus antrąją dalį - (ne)maloni staigmena... Knyga apie visai kitą veikėją ir pirmoje knygoje palikta įtampa atrodo niekuo nesusijusi. Pabaigoje po truputį gijos susivijo, atsakė keletą pirmosios dalies mįslių, bet uždavė ir dar daugiau naujų, tad nors pabaiga nebuvo tokia intensyvi, kaip pirmosios dalies, vis tiek klausimų paliko daugiau nei atsakymų, tad dar grįšiu prie šio savo "guilty pleasure"...

Another poignant and well plotted story by Karen Swan, a historical saga with romance, strong characters and a tightly knitted plotted.
