Miyuki Miyabe (宮部みゆき Miyabe Miyuki) is a popular contemporary Japanese author active in a number of genres including science fiction, mystery fiction, historical fiction, social commentary, and juvenile fiction.
Miyabe started writing novels at the age of 23. She has been a prolific writer, publishing dozens of novels and winning many major literary prizes, including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize in 1993 for Kasha and the Naoki Prize in 1998 for Riyū [The Reason] (理由). A Japanese film adaptation of Riyû, directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, was released in 2004.

作者花非常多心思刻畫每一個登場人物的生活及想法，就像在現實生活中每個人都是主角般存在一樣。儘管如此的敘事方式有些冗長，劇情的節奏還是抓得很好，不至於看得辛苦。上部已幾乎透露了整個犯罪案的過程，猜測下部應該是對真正犯人的背景和動機詳述了。

I read this book in Chinese translation so it might be a different experience for Japanese readers.


I love Miyabe's simple expression. Hence this is the second book that I'm reading from Miyabe. Her first book is written from different angles of the story characters and it allows me to fully emphatise with every character.

The magic of Miyabe's books are that many times the ending of each character is revealed at the front but it still pulls the reader to continue reading. It is the same for this book. However, there is still sufficient cliff hangers to keep me reading this thick book but I have to say the second book has more elements of suspense.

列島全体を振るわせる犯罪はブレーキを故障した車のように走るが、そのスピードに負けずに、犯罪にかかわる全ての人や全ての要そうが立体的に広がる。宮部みゆきは何ひとつ逃さない。我々を犯罪の前に立たせて、向き合わせる。そして、強く訴える。犯罪の前で一つの面だけを見て、立場を簡単に決めてしまってはいけないと。全てを理解するようないいかたで、相対悪という便利なところに逃げてはいけないと。

3.5 stars. So very melodrama. I particularly dislike the 2nd half of the book. There’re some unnecessary characters with too much tediousness about them.
