Some aspects of this novel I enjoyed but some I really did not.

The whole point of a mystery like this, for me, is that as a reader I have an opportunity to solve the crime. This didn't give me the opportunity to get further than understanding that it was to do with convoluted issues surrounding the Hillman will, and that therefore the murderer would be closely connected to or a member of the Hillman family. At no point until the very end was Emely's pregnancy made known, and after having told us the evil doctor "had his way" with Emely, he wasn't the father!

Then there were two murderers .... At least .... It felt like there could have been hundreds roaming this village. Unfortunately I wasn't made to care enough for the victims who were all reprehensible in their own ways. You sort of need to like at least one of the victims.

Then (being an English language pedant) I took issue with several poorly translated / grammatically incorrect phrases.

And Beanstock himself - ok as a detective but again not made to care about him enough, I felt more for poor Mrs Argyle - and as for some of the other ludicrous names.

Wonderful

A wonderful cozy mystery, if you like Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books then you will like this book. The Butler Beanstock not only makes sure his Master and Mistress's household runs smoothly but when there are two murders he does some snooping and helps the police catch the murderer. Well worth five stars. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Good story, though I failed to catch the murderer. It's not terribly accurate about britain in the 1950, and it mixed up the two world wars a bit, so it sometimes felt more like the 1930s. Still, worth reading once you get used yo the slightly prissy English...

Intriguing

This is the first in the series, I hope the rest of the series will soon be translated into English too.
There is a lot more to Beanstock the butler than first seems. He is a first class amateur detective.
I was kept guessing to the end.
More please!
