Be still my teenage heart!

I, for one, am charmed by royalty and back in the day, loved daydreaming about my favorite Hollywood crush, so this story settled right into my past self's heart.

I loved the deep friendship that Ryker and Shannon share and as they come to recognize their true feelings in this rags-to-riches, friends-to-lovers, young adult romance, I was captivated. The chapters alternated points-of-view, which enhanced the story, although there were times when I wished for more depth. Keep in mind, these are teenagers, and while at times they seem utterly mature, there are plenty of times when their age shows, leaving plenty of room for the angst and drama.

Sweet Mountain High is a beloved place for me, but the setting for this one really focuses on the theatrical, Hollywood side that is introduced because of Ryker's acting talent and the buzz that ensues was almost crushing. Ryker is very accommodating and sweet, while Shannon is a little more cynical and hesitant, but their relationship works and they are both great characters. This is a great series that takes me back in time.

Content: mild romance

Reviewed for YA Books Central.

A cute and fun romp.

What’s better than a Hollywood romance between a rising star and the quiet girl next door? When she’s also his best friend. For most of Shannon’s life, she hasn’t thought she was worth much. Growing up the daughter of a father who abandoned her affected the way she saw the world, pushing her into a bad relationship simply because she didn’t think she deserved more.
When her best friend is discovered by a Hollywood director, it forces her to come to terms with feelings she hasn’t let herself had for fear that one day he’d leave her as well.

What I loved:
This book is adorable. From cover to plot, it’s a quick and fun read with engaging writing and easy to root for leads. Ryker is SUCH a good guy, the kind of friend few are lucky to have. It’s impossible not to cheer him on as he’s chased by paparazzi, befriending Hollywood starlets, and facing a future he’d never imagined.
Told in alternating points of view, the reader is taken into the minds of both Shannon and Ryker, getting the full picture of why these two belong together despite jealousies, ex boyfriends, and sudden changes in status.
The most impressive part of the book though is Shannon’s growth from a girl who blames her mother for her parents divorce even though it was her father who cheated to a young woman who begins to see that both she and her mom deserve to be treated with respect and love.

What was just okay:
Not much. This book was pretty solid end to end. There’s the onus on the reader to suspend disbelief a bit with the Hollywood parts of the story, but once you manage that, the rest of the story is a pleasant trip.

Final Verdict:
A fun and adorable trip though young love that reminds us everyone deserves to be treated well and we should never settle for less.

This book was really fun and cute. It was light-hearted, but it still had those emotional tugs I love while reading.

Ryker and Shannon have been best friends most of their lives, and that comfort and familiarity is very apparent in the story. I loved seeing them grow together as they finish high school and approach adulthood. Seeing them get these rare opportunities and support each other was wonderful.

I do wish some things would have been fleshed out more. I think it’s intended to be short, but I feel like there could have been a little more depth on some of the more serious subjects, such as their families’ struggles. Some of the dialogue felt a bit… forced and awkward as well but not enough to stop me reading. In fact, it was a very easy read that I didn’t want to stop.

If you’re looking for a sweet, fun YA romance, this is definitely one to check out!

A quick read and a cute love story! Ryker is definitely boyfriend material! There are scenes where my heart melts, and scenes where it almost hurts, but of course we get our "happily ever after"!

There's really nothing wrong with this story other than it's too short! I would have liked if it went a bit deeper in some places; it sometimes feels a little shallow and rushed. Of course, it's a while since I left the years of "Young Adult" behind me, so that might explain my wish for more depth. Despite this I could hardly wait to get home from work today so I could finish reading!

A classic YA friends-to-lovers romance.

Shannon & Ryker are both cinderellas in this story. Ryker first as he is lifted up from his cinderfella life to Prince Charming, & then Shannon initially rejects her opportunities (as Ryker tries to be her fairy godmother, & Mrs Drake finally succeeds, lol), but learns to recognize how her fears are keeping her from finding her happily-ever-after

It's a little by the numbers, not particularly deep, but fans of the trope will probably enjoy the diversion

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

I'm a fan of YA novels, and I've felt recently that many of those are too explicit for me. This novel was just right.
Ryker and Shannon are best friends and have been for years. Both come from single-parent homes and work hard to help support their families... And then Ryker gets his big break to star in a movie. Maybe it's time to make his move on his best friend who he's secretly been in love with all along?
This book is very clean, a quick read and gently deals with some difficult issues such as infidelity and insecurity. I would recommend it to any teenage girl who likes romance.

This book was a sweet, YA rom-com that can be read as a stand-alone or with the other Sweet Mountain High books. I had so many emotions and thoughts as I read through this book.

First, right at the beginning of the book, one of the main characters, Ryker, is offered a main role in an upcoming blockbuster movie. I love that he took the time to consider this big decision. In so many YA books where the main character is given an amazing opportunity, they just take it without thought. I like that Ryker took the time to weigh all the pros and cons before coming to a decision. This might be a little unbelievable for a 17/18-year-old guy, but I liked it nevertheless.

Secondly, I like that this book talks about some relationship issues that kids noways experience. Ryker and Shannon, the two main characters, both have a hard past with their parents that's discussed a bit here. It affects their future relationships, as we see throughout the book. I'm glad the author chose to explore these issues with her characters since I'm sure there are teenagers in the world that deal with these issues IRL and would be happy to see there is help out there for them.

Along with all these things I liked, there were also some things I didn't. Part of my dislike starts with Shannon. She was so wishy-washy sometimes that it just grew annoying. She deals with a lot of emotional trauma throughout the book which is why she acts the way she does sometimes, but it still bothered me.

As well, the plotline moved so fast that we often didn't get much description when I felt like I needed it. It seemed like we were constantly moving between places and events with only a few lines of dialogue to hold us over. I wish I could have seen more of Ryker and Shannon's thoughts rather than just dialogue and storyline. Like when Shannon was acting upset with Ryker, why was she upset? What was she feeling at that moment to make her so upset? I wish we could have seen a little more of that.

Overall, it was a quick and cute contemporary romance read. It was fun getting to go on this adventure with Ryker and Shannon and getting to see Ryker's quick rise to stardom. Also, it's a good book for younger ages as it doesn't contain any swearing or sexual content. 3.5 stars for me.

‘My Best Friend Prince Charming’ by Cindy Ray Hale tells the story of Ryker and Shannon, two best friends who care deeply about each other, but are too afraid of their relationship unraveling if either reveals the truth. While Ryker has known of his feelings for Shannon for some time, she’s been in a relationship with someone Ryker can’t stand. When their situations change, neither knows how to move forward in terms of their feelings, both old and developing, for each other.

When Ryker is discovered by a Hollywood movie director, he is cast as Prince Charming in a movie version of Cinderella. Shannon worries about what this might mean, including how they won’t be able to attend college together as they had always planned. While girls suddenly take notice of Ryker, Shannon finds herself somewhat jealous, but doesn’t feel it’s her place, while Ryker can’t take notice of anyone but Shannon.

They wonder if their feelings matter in the long run, and if being together supersedes all else. When another girl, the lead actress in the Cinderella movie, comes into the picture, Shannon figures that Ryker will move on, and quickly at that, with someone like her. Their uncertainty about each other seems very true to teenage life. There is also the fact that Ryker takes the time to analyze the decision of whether to take the acting job, even though not taking it means more of a struggle for himself and his family since he didn’t start out with much money. Many people would just take it without looking back, but it was nice to see a teenager take the time to consider and weigh the outcomes of taking on such responsibility.

A sweet and enjoyable story about inner turmoil, friendship, and love, ‘My Best Friend Prince Charming’ is perfect for lovers of YA contemporary romance.

This is a series of stories in the Sweet Mountain High books and Cindy Ray Hale has once again written a sweet and endearing story. My Best Friend Prince Charming is a fun and delightful read that can be easily read in one sitting.

In My Best Friend Prince Charming, we find main characters Shannon and Ryker go from best friends to more than best friends. But it's what happens in between their stories that makes this book so sweet. I am a firm believer that childhood best friends can indeed become lovers as they get older. Who else knows you best than your best friend? In this story for instance, Ryker and Shannon has had their share of ups and downs in life but they have always been able to rely on each other - as true friends should. But then something suddenly happens and their friendship gets put to the test. Will this sudden news break them apart or bind them closer together?

I liked Ryker's character a lot - he is steadfast, honest, and kind. He doesn't let the little things get to him and he's very well written to be one of those "dreamy" kind of boyfriends that we all wish we could have. He is incredibly loyal to Shannon and that's one of the top qualities for him. Shannon is rather complicated in that she has a bad past she can't get over, thus hindering her from truly breaking free of her demons to realize her full potential. In a sense, she is the classic girl with daddy issues and doesn't realize her destructive patterns.

My Best Friend Prince Charming is a delightful read. There are some heavy parts that could trigger for some people, but the story is very well written and there is a good resolution for all in the end. The side characters are also well written and I'm hoping for a side story for one of them!

Thank you in advance for the ARC!

MY BEST FRIEND PRINCE CHARMING is a contemporary romance told in alternating point of views so the reader witnesses both sides of the story. Shannon has a lot of personal issues she's dealing with between the divorce of her parents and the break up with her boyfriend who she caught cheating on her. Throughout it all, her best friend Ryker is there for her. When Ryker lands a role as Prince Charming, he becomes busy with the lifestyles of the rich and the famous. But even when surrounded by celebrity stars, his mind lingers on Shannon.

Shannon is jealous of Ryker's new job and the attention it earns. She feels him slipping away from her, even though she refuses to admit her feelings for him. Ryker on the other hand has always had strong feelings for Shannon. She's very important to him, but so is his family. They don't have much money, so this opportunity is life changing for them. As the tension builds, they're both forced to face their feelings for the better or the worse.

There's a lot of character growth for Shannon, even though she's quite a bit annoying in the beginning. Ryker is a sweetheart with a strong sense of what's right and wrong. He wants to be there for both Shannon and his family, which is admiral, even though it wears him a little thin. I love the idea of him being Prince Charming in both a movie and real life. Because anyone can be someone's prince with the right situation.

Overall: MY BEST FRIEND PRINCE CHARMING is a cute and clean contemporary romance that makes for a quick read. I would recommend it to those looking for a book in the friends to lovers trope and for those who prefer clean plots.

I am a sucker for a friends to lovers trope and this novel definitely hit it. This boy/girl next door romance is a fantastic novel for young readers. I am giving it a 4 out of 5 stars though because of the pacing. I felt like we hit the ground running from the first page and it made me feel a little flustered. I could have gone for slightly slower pace with more details. It just seemed like Shannon's world was all at once, immediately falling a part. That could just be the adult in me though...

Can we talk about how much of a jerk the boyfriend was at the beginning?! MAJOR JERK! Ryker was obviously the way to go from the beginning. Perfect boyfriend material! That kind of guy that every girl in high school deserved.

I have not read any of the other Sweet Mountain High novels, but I look forward to reading more from this set.

I would definitely recommend this novel to my high school students looking for a quick read who love cute romances. This novel would even be appropriate for upper middle schoolers.

Extremely cute and fun to read!

This book was super sweet and only took a couple hours to read.
I felt that it was a little short though and things seemed to be rushed. Everything happened so fast and within a month or two.
Ryker was definitely boyfriend material but he did so much for Shannon; it kinda surprised me how much he did for her considering she technically had a boyfriend. I don’t know what she saw in Austin and I’m glad that they explained it because she should have been with Ryker this whole time. The family dynamics were almost the same also since they only had one parent each and they both had a sibling or two.
I liked some of the side characters but not all of them. The drama was like being in high school all over again with the mean girls and the hormonal teenager boys. I’m glad they finally figured things out though and they will get there happy ending.

Fine

It was ok. Shannon had some major Daddy issues. Ryker was pretty steady. Neither one of them was very deep though.

Shannon actually just drove me nuts with her back and forth. Her reasons for dating Austin were stupid and I can't believe her mother allowed it. "It was modeled by your dad" isn't an acceptable reason for her mom not to speak up. She ultimately was an immature girl.

Ryker was almost unbelievable in his loyalty. He didn't get upset or frustrated
Just waited patiently. Which was sweet because he was respecting her wishes, but that doesn't feel real. It feels contrived.

There were also a handful of inconsistencies. (And it's just fan fiction, with "the". No one calls it "the" fan fiction.)

It was a short enough read. Ryder's down to earth personality was sweet. Shannon was obnoxious.

Enjoyable YA romance. Friends to lovers . Ryker and Shannon are friends coming from the same poor background. Things are about to really change when Ryker is cast as the lead in an upcoming blockbuster movie. Both are projected into a world of screaming fangirls and insistent paparazzi. How will their friendship survive? More importantly, will Ryker be able to convince Shannon that fame won't come between them and will he make it out of the friend zone once her jerk of a boyfriend is out of the picture?
Loved Ryker as the perfect book boyfriend. Really swoonworthy. Shannon a little less so . Girls always seem to fall for the wrong guys!
It is part of a series but can be read alone. Perfect for teens and the young at heart.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.

It was an okay book for me. The story was really sweet but some parts seemed to be a bit long for me even though this was a short one. I felt like some facts were repeated a bit too often which took out the tension a lot. Also I wasn't a big fan of the main female character. She just felt too superficial for me and very naive. I must admit that her constant change of mind didn't really help with getting to know her on a deeper level. I liked the male character a lot though. All together it was a nice story that somehow seemed to rush through events and also took it's times on various facts, but a nice and quick read.

This is a book about 2 high school students who have been neighbors and best friends their entire life and though Ryker had always had a crush on Shannon, she had a boyfriend and so he thought nothing could be done about his feelings. Ryker and Shannon had their ups and downs throughout the book. Both had grown up poor but then Ryker had the opportunity of a lifetime to become rich & famous and everything changed. This was a quick & squeaky clean read. I had it read in a day and a half.
I did receive an ARC & have voluntarily chosen to review it.

This story captured my attention right away! The main characters are very relatable and their circumstances are realistic. Cindy Ray Hale does an incredible job helping the reader feel the magnitude of the character’s decisions. The reader also gets to experience the emotions of both characters throughout the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone. I’m 38 and really enjoyed it. It was difficult to put this book down. I was eager to find out how it would end. I’ll definitely be reading more of her books!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This was my first book by this author. It was a quick sweet YA romance with the sweetest HEA. This is the sixth book in the series but each book is by a different author.
Ryker and Shannon have been best friends and neighbors forever. Ryker is trying to navigate his new found fame while trying to figure a way to not lose his best friend.
Shannon knew that things would change between her and Ryker but never expected them to change this much.
I really enjoyed this best friends to lovers romance and can't wait to read more from this author.

This story is a great read, super sweet and charming. This is a best friend, next door neighbor sweet YA rom-com. This is such a fantastic story of Ryker and Shannon. Ryker gets the opportunity of a lifetime, but doesn’t jump into it right away, even though he is young he thinks about it and gets counsel from trusted adults. Shannon is his best friend, who he has been in love with for some time, she doesn’t realize how she really feels. It is fun to see how this Cinderella story goes along and how it ends, very well written.
