At a scenic urban restaurant in Pennsylvania in December 2009, Annette waits for her husband to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. In the meanwhile, an elderly couple prompts her to tell them her love tale. There is a flashback to August, 1984, in quaint Cape May, NJ. Annette is then a budding pharmaceutical representative in her mid-twenties and deeply involved with her longtime beau and neighbor, Jake, a former football hero turned ambitious entrepreneur. While spending a weekend with her family at their shore-front house, Annette encounters Grant, an outgoing lawyer who is vacationing at his favorite B & B. The two are compellingly drawn to each other and romance, but their fling is halted by Annette's love for Jake. Events quickly occur that alter the courses of the trio, and connections between them are discovered with shocking impacts. Each of them must face occupational and personal challenges while Annette sorts her lifelong feelings for Jake and her whirlwind passion for Grant. The story returns to 2009 with the arrival of Annette's husband and their reflection on the foundation of their union.
While the story was intriguing the way the common conversation was written was a little archaic or lofty for my taste. Overall I enjoyed the plot but the characters seemed stiff and unrealistic due to the choice of dialogue.
I was expecting to enjoy this story, sadly I did not! I am not one to rush or skim through stories, but I found myself rushing through the last 40 or so pages because I just wanted to be done with this book! It seemed to drag on and on and mid way through I was sick of hearing about Jake and his college football glory days and Annette and her conflicting feelings between Jake and Grant! Story seemed way to long, drug out and predictable. Of course Annette eventually chooses Grant and of course she finds him and they live happily ever after. I enjoy romance novels and I enjoy the happy ending when the girl gets the guy, or vice versa, but this one just didn't work for me! The best part of the whole story was finding out that Grants client J.M. was Jake, Annette's longtime boyfriend! After that the whole thing went downhill for me! I love "beachy" books, and I loved the cover photo on this edition! I love Cape May, NJ where some of the story takes place, and I purchased this book at quite an inflated price (in my opinion) because I bought it in a little beach book store near Cape May and because Mr. Bradford was considered a local author. My copy is also autographed, so maybe that was the reason for the inflated price?! Sorry to say this was not a favorite for me!
