This book is an anthology of 10 sinister tales, all of which take place in and around Balgay Park in Dundee, Scotland. The tales are entirely fictional and deal with ghosts, angels, witches, aliens, werewolves, premonition and telepathy. Most of the stories are contemporary, but two date back a few years and one dates from 1899.
I’ve lived in Dundee for over a decade and that’s the city where these ten short stories are all based - specifically, it’s western side, where I first moved to from London (I now live in the city’s eastern suburbs).
The local knowledge, local colour and ambience these stories are all faithful renditions of this part of north east Scotland.
The writing is gripping, authentic and compelling.
Well worth your time and attention - great fun despite the chill wind, I mean of the storylines, not the equally chill winds of wintry Scotland, which don’t come with the book delivery ;-)
Through ten supernatural tales, George Burton takes you on a leisure tour of Dundee's beautiful Balgay Hill, its iconic graveyard, and the many other corners of the place both in the past and present. Come with him to see snapshots also of Dundee itself through the decades. And as with the best of ghostly, witchy, alien filled tales, they reflect on human nature, our foibles and our small victories. All in all, great fun will be had!
Thoroughly enjoyed the stories in this book, all very different, a quick read, perfect for my holidays. The writing flowed beautifully and maybe one day, I'll visit Dundee and Balgay Park now that I have been introduced.
