Charlie Rees is in New York, and at home in Llanfair, dogs keep disappearing. Hardly the crime of the century, thinks Acting DS Eddy Edwards ... until computer nerd Will arrives and turns everything upside down.
Do-go-on and read this if you’re fans of Charlie Rees
Ripley Hayes always writes really great side characters in her novels and it’s good to see some of them take centre stage for once. Eddy was always an underused character in the Charlie Rees series so this little novella gives him a chance to show he is much more than a hulking police officer with a crush on Charlie.
In fact he is a really interesting character that I hope we get much more from in any future Charlie Rees books. I also hope we get more from Will and maybe more from Will and Eddy together… as that little morsel of a cliff hanger definitely needs to be explored in future books.
But as a novella goes, this was a simple mystery with a satisfying conclusion that didn’t require too much detecting. A shout out goes to the author for trying to make spreadsheets appear sexy and exciting. It’s not easier to write a “dramatic reveal” on a layered map with 4 colour points, but she pulled it off. What she also pulled off was Will’s anxiety around people and how he struggles with that in work and his personal life. What didn’t work so well was the character of Patsy. She just comes across as an unlikeable person with very little given by the author to explain this, other than her being extremely intelligent and upset because Will wouldn’t sleep when her polyamorous boyfriend. Pretty weak and something I wish the author hadn’t included as it was only there to created conflict between her and Will. But if you can overlook that, this is a fun story that can be read in a few hours and is a must for fans of the Charlie Rees series.
Honestly there isn't much to tell, a short maybe introduction of a new character and a love interest for Eddy And that's it I saw a review about their "chemistry" but I didn't see any, just one mc is considered hot and the other has great person and big blue eyes And about the "cute dogs", I Flove dogs and for the amount of writing space and interaction etc the dogs get if you swap dog whit any other things it it wouldn't make a lot of difference 🤷♀️
While Charlie and Tom are fighting for their lives in NYC, back in Llanfair, Eddie is struggling with being made Acting Detective Sergeant and dismissive of a spate of local dog thefts, until computer expert Will is transferred to help out.
It was lovely to be back with the gang at Llanfair, with Will making a fine addition to the cast and some love interest for our Eddie. A delightful short in this thoroughly enjoyable series.
I think this story would make no sense if you had not read the previous books in the series as it was light on any backstory, but I am a big fan of this series so I really enjoyed seeing Eddie connect with someone. Hope Will stick around and we see their relationship bloom more in the next one.
I really enjoyed this. The only reason it's only 4 stars is because it was on the short side, and I wanted so much more. I'm hoping Hayes will return to Eddy and Will because they're wonderful characters, and I loved their chemistry. Will is truly a delight -- he's become one of my favorites. And the dogs were cute, though not as intriguing as their new relationship. ;)
An entertaining story in the Charlie Rees universe - with Charlie on holiday, Eddy is in charge, but things dont go easy. Nerdy Will is in as cover, but his talents are not in community policing. An amusing tale with a very serious theme, shows the boys and girls in blue, that everyone has their skills.
I didn’t realize it was just a short story but even so the ending was not great. I really liked these books in Wales so I was happy to see another. It was good til they solved the case and then very rushed. Overall unsatisfying.
Eddie sometimes is a bit too stuck up and opinionated but Will brings out a better side of him. I hope he joins the team as he would be a great help to them and their small town. Charlie would love him. Time to find some missing dogs..
