Kings of Chaos #2

Two Thousand Tears

Rate this book
He was supposed to be my enemy. Not my lover.

Yichen is free at last…sort of.

He has escaped his imprisonment, but he’s still blood bound to the crown prince of the fae.

Oh gods, how is he going to explain that to his clan?

Finding a way to break the bond might not be too hard. Killing the king of the fae even seems possible.

But there’s no way he can let go of the elf who protected him, risked everything for him for a hundred years?

Rei is the breath in his lungs, the blood in his veins, and the beat of his heart. Somehow, he has to find a way to keep him.

An elf can fall in love with a vampire, right?

Two Thousand Tears is the second novel in the Kings of Chaos series, which is a spin-off from the Lords of Discord series. This book contains a somewhat broken vampire falling in love with an elf who should be his enemy but is actually his everything, shifters, meddling witches, other non-human surprises, snark, angst, car surfing, found family, brotherly bickering, magic, chaos, pouting, vampire cuddles, and an endless love that crosses lines drawn by war.

Another solid entry in the Kings Of Chaos

As I'm one of the clear minority who doesn't watch or care about Asian dramas, webtoons or comics, the extreme detail of the Chinese traditions and culture that make up the hallmark of this series is somewhat lost on me.

That said, I like that it's a unique take on a vampire clan to have them be two thousand years old and date back to 90-odd BC for their origin story.

Throw that together with a Crown Prince of the Fae, and I'm definitely more interested in the narrative, especially with the long lost vampire brother being rescued after a century and bringing said Elf back either him.

That being said, it was a bit of a slow slog of a slow burn for at least the first third of the book. Especially when the reader knows they have feelings!

Things do pick up once they've declared said feels and we move onto the main action adventure elements which sees the Variks on hand alongside their mates and also Moon's witchy friends as they come up with a way of defeating Rei's hideous parents.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading book three as I feel Xiang is someone we don't know a lot about and he's got himself a dragon for a mate by the looks of things!

omg first to review and i'm not even an arc reviewer :>

the chinese vamps are BACK and i'm here for them. rei and yichen are great together - i mean after you've survived life with that one person for a century you two would have a pretty intimate relationship already.

i love the appearance of the other characters (bel my fave scientist vamp and sky the sunny necromancer and so many more <33). i like the 狐狸精 (huli jing) as well and i'm sooo excited to see his book with xiao dan!! wonder what's up with the cat? the dragon also totally took me by surprise - gotta admit the author's done her research cos i didn't know half the dragons she listed 😅😅

although there's that one most important plot line the author forgot(?) to wrap up 😡😡QUEEN BELLADONNA. why is she still alive bro?? ain't she a villain?

(it was a 4 star now it's a 3.5 because of this ^ grrrrr)

and a bit more about the chi pronunciations. author if you read this - i'm really sorry no offence intended but some of the chi is wrong >.< xiong is pronounced like 'see-ong' (but like yk when you say it together faster like 'seeong') and not 'shong'. and i got confused because xiao dan's chi name is 建豪 (pinyin jiàn háo) but dude's name is xiao dan?? the meaning is right but the phrase's pinyin is completely different.

and yeah this essay is DONE because i have actual school essays to write (chi essays too 💀💀). toodaloo!

Two Thousand Tears is the story of vampire Prince Yichen and fae Crown Prince Rei. After their centuries-long ordeal at the hands of Rei's parents, the princes are the definition of codependency. Their plan is to break their bond so Yichen can return to his clan, and Rei can return to the fae realm to try to undo the damage his parents have wrought. This book is not a standalone and picks up a few weeks after the first Kings of Chaos book ended. The clan is continuing to fight the fae King and Queen's plan to take over the human world for their own selfish purposes. Two Thousand Tears continues in the same found-family vibe as the previous book.

My main issue with the book was that it told the story that happened after the one I wanted to read. Yichen was held captive by the fae for a century, where he and Rei had countless opportunities to learn to trust each other amid the horrors of their lives. They had a century to get to know each other and we missed it all. We see small hints, but there's so much that was missing from their story… how they met, the little moments leading up to when they fell in love… I wanted to read that so badly. I wanted longing. I wanted pining. I wanted their love story and I feel like we got the leftover bits.

I didn't love the first book and I probably should have taken it as a hint that this one wouldn't be my fave either (I loved the Variks series and vamp books in general so it's hard to resist 🙈). Book 2 is very similar in tone and it is the usual well-written book I expect from Jocelynn Drake. She didn't chintz out on the details and world building, and the cameos from other characters were really enjoyable. However, overall this book dragged for me, I think they are just too long for the amount of plot contained in them. There were a lot of sweet moments between Yichen and Rei that I loved reading, but the ending wrapped up too abruptly for my taste. I was a bit bored while reading. Sadly, I think this series just isn't for me.

I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Sometimes I like a book so much I can't particularly create coherent sentences over it, and mentally all I can think about sounds as if I were a teen on Tumblr on the 2010s keyboard smashing, pterodactyl screeching, banging the table with my hands and "can't even"-ing.
This book is all the good things of the first, with all new emotions to overload you with. All new excitement. All new sweetness. There is so much! And all so good! And I am truly at a loss on how to say it all!

Two thousand tears is book two in the Kings of Chaos series. In this book, we get the story of Yichen, the Zhang clan vampire who was taken captive by the fae, and Rei, the fae prince that became Yichen’s best friend and constant companion after his capture. They have arrived in the human realm with the intent of stopping the fae from claiming that realm, and they admit they love each other along the way.
The book has Ms. Drake’s trademark humor and swoon-worthy romance. It also has a good bit of action and suspense. It is engrossing and will make you want to devour it as fast as possible. Yichen and Rei are adorable together, and I loved how their romance developed.
I love the connections to Ms. Drake’s other series that are included in this book. We get references to the Lords of Discord series and appearances of the Variks. We also get Sky, Nolan, and his witchy friends from the Necromancer in the Gold Vest series.
It’s a really great book that I definitely recommend. It’s a continuation of the series, so you will want to start with book 1 first.

The second book of Kings of Chaos focuses on kidnapped vampire from the Zhang Clan, Wu Yichen, and his elf prince, Wistari Elnaril Reymaris (or "Rei"). After one hundred years being held prisoner in fae realm, Yichen is now free ... with one problem. Yichen is blood bound to Rei - he can only consume Rei's blood. So he has to find away to break the blood-bound as well as kill the King of Fae, so Rei can return to the fae realm and take over the kingdom and Yichan can finally stay with his family.

Or is that the only problem? Because apparently there's feelings involved

Well, after Yichen and Rei acknowledged their feelings, things get sappy between them real fast, with all the promise of "Mine" and "Forever". BUUUUT, at the same time, it takes DECADES for them to get to this point. They're probably have been together in fae realm for almost a century, but it's more about survival than relationship. Yichen is a prisoner and Rei has suffered in the hands of his parents too when trying to protect Yichen.

So it isn't exactly the right time for hanky panky 😄. I can totally forgive them as they're forging their relationship now fast and furious. They deserved it.

By the way, , but it doesn't mean that the problem is solved. I think the fae folks are playing the long game. Plus by the end of this book, another Zhang brother is kidnapped (no, not by fae, by another CREATURE).

On to book #3 🏃🏻‍♀️

Absolutely a must read, astonishing epic story

Rating: 5🌈

This is exactly the type of story and series I emotionally want as a reader. I absolutely wallow in it, appreciating what Jocelynn Drake is accomplishing narratively, while also still being totally immersed in the universe and the characters storylines as they are unfolding.

If I adored the first book, Two Thousand Dreams, then my deep love for this novel is for all the beautiful creativity and passion that Drake pours into this second story.

None of these are standalone novels, but intricate layered parts of an epic that’s yet to reach its climax. It’s pulling together characters from other series that form important political and mystical factions, while simultaneously creating new characters and expanding the existing world in ways we hadn’t anticipated.

It’s ancient China, the Fae, the current human world imperiled, witchcraft, necromancy, vampires and their mates . Even the Underworld and demons play an important role here. There’s skeletons on the march with varying eras making retain a piece of their long gone personality. Such an amazing foundation for the main storylines to be threaded into.

After Blood Witch Moon Mullins and 2000 year old Chinese vampire Chen and the rest of their clan of ancient Chinese vampires found the Gate the Fae were arriving through, they arrived early to rescue their family member, Yichen, who had been kidnapped 100 years earlier and disappeared into the Fae realm.

Here Yichen reappears with the Fae Prince Rei, in tow. Their 100 year old relationship clearly has been one of pain, trauma, and more brought on by the Fae King and Queen . What they’ve done and gone through is never explicitly stated but implied. But as they work together to keep themselves safe, understanding the new implications of their status, it’s the emotional state of their shaky bond that affects them and their family the most.

Imprisonment doesn’t allow for any thought beyond that of escaping. Then it’s one more goal. But Drake starts to allow the reality of their new safety to let other possibilities open up for them. It’s a story that pulls the reader into their dynamic and won’t turn us loose. Not even at the end.

Additionally, into this found family are so many fantastic characters. A Huli and its attachment to a member of the family. The other members that are extraordinary in their powers and personality.

Including the one that is the heart of the next book and the dramatic ending here. For while they have been successful in achieving their goals at the end another shattering climax awaits them .

I will undoubtedly read this again before the next book arrives. Just for the sheer pleasure and satisfaction I received from the author’s words.

I’m highly recommending this series and novels . Pls read them in the order they are written.

Loved it! Book Two does not disappoint!

I absolutely loved this second book in this series, which is a spin off from the Lords of Discord series and as such has appearances by our friends the Variks as well as our favorite witch coven members.

Book one introduces the Chinese vampire clan who had come to Connecticut in order to save their kidnapped clan mate once the door to the fae realm opened as it does every 100 years. Yichen has now been rescued but he is blood bonded to his elf protector. Rae, the elf crown prince needs to kill his father the king and mother the queen in order to protect the human realm and get all the fae back through the door and into their own realm. He is completely in love with Yichen even if he knows there is no way they can ever be together.

This is an enemies to allies to friends to lovers story between a vampire and an elf. It’s also a found family story. The trajectory of this slow burn relationship is heartwrenching. But it’s also sweet and inspiring. I was completely sucked in and read the whole thing in one sitting (and am now writing this at 4:40 am!)

A shocking turn of events gives us a sneak peek of book three. The overarching story continues as in this book, like in book one, part of the problem is resolved but there’s still more to come. You really need to read these books in order.

We continue the series with the long-lost brother, Didi, finally found! The clan has waited a century for the Fae door to open again so they could rescue him. Yichen and Prince Rei manage to escape, but instead of returning home to the clan, they hide away. There's a blood tie between them, but Yichen fears his clan won't accept Rei.

When the clan finally welcomes Yichen back, you can feel the love—even through all their head-butting! Together, they start planning with the vampires and shifters to go to war against the Fae. The royals fall, and just when things seem calm, Rei and Yichen face a near-death experience that opens their eyes to what’s been in front of them all along: they’re fated mates.

The book ends on a major cliffhanger—with someone lost to a dragon. Now I’m bouncing on my seat waiting for the next book. I need my dragon fix ASAP! 🐉🔥

4,5 stars for the second book in this series.
Please be aware that in my opinion these books should be read in order.

We met Yichen and Rai at the end of the first book, where they were "rescued" from the fae realm.
This book starts a few weeks after that and finds both of them in the city.

This story has a lot of action, but the main focus is on their relationship, which is not easy.
I loved how they found their way to each other through all misconceptions they built up in their century together.

The book is a very sweet and romantic read and has, therefore, a slower pace. Which is ok, when expected ... but it definitely differs here from the first book

I am normally not a big fan of "looking-back" scenes, but I think it would have been nice to see more of their time in the fae realm. We get a few insights, but a real scene would have been great.

All in all, this was a great second book and I am curious about the next one

Book two in the series, about Yichen and Rei’s love story is the perfect mix of angst, passion, and heartwarming tenderness—proving that even in the middle of chaos and war, love can defy all odds.

The world building is rich and immersive, pulling you deep into a realm of vampires, elves, witches, and shifters, where danger lurks around every corner. The tension between Yichen’s duty to his clan and his undeniable love for Rei is palpable, and every interaction between them is laced with emotion, longing, and sizzling chemistry.

Beyond the romance, the action is gripping, the magic is mesmerising, and the found family dynamics add so much warmth and humour to the story. The snark, the banter, and yes—vampire cuddles—make this book impossible to put down.

If you love forbidden romance, enemies-to-lovers tension, and fantasy worlds bursting with magic and intrigue, this book is a must-read! I’m already looking forward to the next one! 💙🔥

After enjoying Two Thousand Dreams, the first book in Jocelynn Drake’s Kings of Chaos series, I was eager to dive into the next book. I had high hopes for Two Thousand Tears and went in with high expectations, ready for a book I would devour. Fortunately, the book delivered.

Two Thousand Tears had me hooked from the first page. I quickly fell back in love with the world, falling deeper for the characters I had briefly met in the first book, and I could not put it down. It was a story I gladly devoured in a single sitting, unable to tear my attention away from what was happening. This second book continues the storylines introduced in the first, pulling the reader deeper into the world. I loved watching the way the details came together – not to mention, I was made more eager to read the connected books due to the things I saw throughout – and had so much fun with the characters. It packed punch after punch throughout, with my only disappointment being that certain elements felt a little too easy. I expected more intensity, more action, but I understand why things played out the way they did. It was necessary for this story, and I am crossing my fingers for more of the action and intensity in the next book.

Because I am extra eager to dive into the next book. The story ended in such a way that I have high hopes – again – for what is to come next and am eagerly awaiting more.

This is the second book in the vampire spin-off series and it has to be read in order to understand the overall story line.

The book starts a couple of weeks after the first one finishes and Yin and Rei are realising they need the clan to find a solution for a) their bond and b) how to deal with the fae.

The book concentrates on the bond between Yin and Rei, forged during their time in the fae realm. After escaping it becomes clear that Yin can't survive without Rei's blood but Rei can't survive when they banish the fae back and close the door to their realm.

Underneath it's also clear that both don't want the other to leave but it takes a bit for them to voice their growing attraction and especially Rei is concerned that the vampire clan won't accept him.

As in the author's other series, this is an ongoing storyline which weaves through this book and onto the next one. I love how the book includes the Variks and Sky and the witches without loosing the focus on the Zhang clan and it's members. Each character is well written and with their own personality and how it is part of the clan. There is still lots to discover and anticipate.

The story does have a larger climax but it also twists again in some unsuspected area and I can't wait to see how the next story will develop.

A star deduction because I missed a background of Yin's time with the fae and how he bonded with Rei.

With the opening of the portal, Yichen is finally free but he is still blood bound to Rei, the crown prince of the fae. While he was with the fae during the past century, Rei was everything to Yichen – savior confidant, and protector. Now Yichen realizes he wants more but how can he explain to his clan that he wants an elf. And he cannot be sure that Rei wants the same. Yichen has to consider that when the portal closes, Rei will eventually die. Finally returning to his clan, Yichen as well as Rei can concentrate on what is important. They need to free Yichen and find a way to keep Rei. Meanwhile the battle continues to prevent the annihilation of humans by the fae.

Jocelynn Drake does an incredible job of bringing these characters to life. You instantly feel a connection to them and a desire to see them all successful in the quest. Yichen and Rei deserve a happily ever after but have so much to conquer to get there. The underlying story is still ongoing but one part of it was resolved. There is so much more to go. Pick this one and experience it for yourself, you will be glad you did. The ending left us on a bit of a cliffhanger and we can only hope that Jocelynn Drake can write as fast as possible so that we will not experience withdrawal.

I know this is paranormal but......

Before I continue, let me say that I really enjoy this author's books. I'm not sure what's going on with this one, but it just seems like it's too much. First focusing this book with all asian characters with pronouns and traditions is really too much for someone who doesn't do well with foreign languages and customs. It made it very difficult to follow along. I'm older and my memory is already crap. Lol.

As to the story lying, certain things do not make sense. Aiden Aidan has the fog of death. Winter can reach through the veil And snatch somebody up without being seen. Why wouldn't he just kill the king? Instead of snatching up the fallen people during the battle. Bel Can communicate with animals yet they're concerned with finding people to spy on the fae. With the abilities of the paranormals in this book the difficulty level of going against the king was just too much.

Furthermore, If we are to understand the way this is written, two sentient beings with the ability to make choices, who hate each other, come together to have sex just to create children to kill. That doesn't even make sense. All in all?
It took me a great deal of time to read this book period I had to put it down actually read another book and then come back to it because it was just so unrealistic ( yes I know its imaginary creatures) to me.

Another great addition to this series! I wasn't expecting to like Rei and Yichen together as much as I did. Their story is a little more heartbreaking than Moon and Chen's and you can feel that in the desperate edge of all their interactions. It made the entire thing a little aching along with the romance.

Just like the first book I was drawn in immediately. This clan of grumpy old vampires is seriously the best. Moon is a great addition to this little found family too and it was awesome to get a bunch of Chen/Moon interactions because I really liked their story.

Rei and Yichen are pining for each other pretty much from the beginning so you get to wait with baited breath for the moment they finally give in and once they do it's oh so sweet. I adored them together. They had so much past and had already been there for each other for so long it felt like puzzle pieces clicking into place when they finally admitted their feelings. I also really like the plots in these books, lots of action and exciting things to do and it keeps it interesting among the adorable romance.

I'm so excited for Xiang's book which is next I think! I've been looking forward to it from the beginning.

*Thanks to GRR for an ARC! These are my honest opinions and I'm giving them voluntarily* ♥️

Another bestseller from Ms. Jocelynn Drake!

This is the second book in her new series, Kings of Chaos, which is a spinoff from The Lords of Discord. In this installment, we will learn the back story of Wu Yichen and Prince Rei of the fae realm whose family and kind kidnapped Yichen a hundred years ago.

They have been each other's protector for a hundred years and they are bounded by blood. Rei had to let Yichen drink from him after one of the tortures inflicted on him almost killed him, Rei had no choice.

His kind has tried to kill him since he was young, his own parents are the masterminds, they do not want him to ascend the throne. He is the only one left among his siblings. He is the rightful heir. but he would rather stay with Yichen than sit on the throne.

I love this new series, much like the rest of Ms. Jocelynn Drake's stories, they are well-written, well-paced and full of adventures and shenanigans. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Congratulations!

Incredible! I don't know what else to say about this book. I loved the story, the MCs Rei and Yichen, and all the other characters, are so well-developed and compelling. The story has so much action, tension, suspense, danger...and that's not to mention all the Fae politicking, betrayal, and back-stabbing. There is maybe a touch of insanity, too, and not just King Ash. One has to wonder how Rei could have any 'humanity' or caring for others (and also not be completely mad) growing up in the environment he did. Wow, I'm still catching my breath! Progress was made in the battle with the Fae, but the war is still not won, and now they have to rescue a family member from a -- well you'll have to read the book to find out. I loved this book, and seeing the Variks and there partners again was great. I loved to see them all coming together (along with the witches and shifters) to fight for the Earth. I can't wait for the next book!

I loved this second book in the Kings of Chaos series. The story arc continues from Book 1. Wu Yichen and Rei are free from the their imprisonment by the fae, but still need to find a way to to close the door between realms. There are battles and skirmishes and other trials as Yiyi and Rei's love story finally unfolds. I love all the characters in these stories. Rei is not just a blood thirsty elf with patricide on his mind, he's also a nurturing force for nature all around him and that makes him more balanced. Yichen is still traumatised by his time in the fae realm and trying to find his way back to his clan both physically and emotionally. The prologue is about when Yichen was turned and, whilst that was important, I wanted to learn so much more about the fae realm and his time there. It feels like an important part of the story was missing.

Two Thousand Tears is the second book in the Kings of Chaos series. We pick up after Yichen has escaped his imprisonment. He’s still bound to fae prince Rei and the two are continuing their fight to stop Rei’s parents from conquering the human realm. They also need to figure out how they feel about one another and what that means for their respective clans and their future.
I loved the continued world-building and political intrigue that Jocelynn Drake brought into this second installment. She managed to weave together humor, suspense, and romance into a beautiful narrative that felt engaging and imaginative. I’m really looking forward to the next book to see how all the pieces fall into place.

fae and vampires and witches oh my

Ok so all Yichen and Rei have to do is break their blood bond, defeat Rei’s evil parents, push the fae back into their lands, close the door, oh and also figure out their relationship. No big deal, right?

Book 2 was definitely more plot-heavy than book 1. There was lots and lots of drama and twists and turns and alliances and much political drama, but also some super cute sweet moments with their clan!

This was *definitely* a very very slow burn, but there was plenty of other action to fill in that slow pace. But the last 25% holy moly. So much condensed into so few chapters. And that last chapter!? I am SO EXCITED for this next story!

Yichen has been finally rescued! But just because he escaped doesn’t mean he’s free. He’s now blood bound to Rei, the prince on the fae, who also saved him from harm and protected him for the past 100 years.
In the effort to free themselves from one another, they come to the realization that they can’t see themselves being apart, they must face the truth of their feelings for one another, the danger they are in from the fae, and try to simply stay alive.
We have visits from our favorite witches and also our favorite vampires, I mean! That was a highlight right there! Bell and his werewolves? *swoons*
There’s also a lot of action, laughter, sweet moments, and intrigue. Starting book 3 immediately!

Honestly, why is this universe so good? Yichen and Rei are so very good for each other, and their friends and family are so incredibly supportive. This story is so full of mutual pining and "doing the right thing for the other person" that it very nearly all goes off the rails. I do wish there had been more in the story about what they'd gone through together in the fae realm, but there was definitely enough going on at the current time. I enjoyed the pacing, and the glimpses of all the other characters and their ongoing stories. Definitely intrigued by the epilogue and can't wait for the next book!

I have been waiting for this book as I really loved the first book as well as the Lords of Discord series which I highly recommend you read first if you haven't. This book was so good and starts shortly after the last one finishes and pulls all the characters together so beautifully. Such an enthralling storyline that just drew me in more and more and kept me entertained with the amazing characters, the angst and chaos, magic, all the found family and their interactions especially the bickering! And not forgetting so much love that binds them all together. Cannot wait for the next final book.
I received an arc copy from GRR and this is my honest review.

I think this could’ve been so cool as its own series—elf prince falls in love with vampire captive, helps him escape fae realm—but instead, all the amazing parts of the story happened off page. This is the post-epic-adventure-story of them admitting feelings to each other after all those years. Still nice but anticlimactic since we never see the century love story buildup.

I feel like we got a side dish from what could’ve been a complex extravagant meal of a story. I understand that fits with the one-book-per-vampire rhythm of the series, but I’m a little sad we didn’t see the whole story.

Spice: 3/5
Angst: 2/5

This is book 2 in the series and must be read in order to enjoy the overall arc. After Yichen was saved from the fae realm by his clan, he crossed the door with a fae named Rei. After being stuck in the fae realm for 100 years, Yichen and Rei became friends, along with Yichen having a blood bond with Rei. As they worked together with the clan, they were finally able to admit that they were mates. This book is filled with lots of action, high heat and chemistry. Love this world and cannot wait to read more.

This series is definitely the best one I’ve read this year.

I would strongly recommend reading the books in order, to fully enjoy everything this amazing series has to offer.

This author has created a world I could happily get lost in. Fantastic characters and an amazing storyline that pulled me in from beginning to end.

Ahhh, I loved this! Rei is cheeky and cute (and awesome at shooting things from the top of a moving car) and Yiyi is a little less reserved than Chen, but it's still great to see their contrast. Loved the development of the overall plot (oh no, more problems!) and the cameos from other characters - this might not be their story, but they're still getting involved. Can't wait to see how this all wraps up!
