Kate is desperate for answers about her Gift after it destroyed a Fallen Guardian’s Gift. Her supernatural ability could revolutionize the war between Guardians and Fallen and save lives, but only if she can accept the agonizing consequences of what it does. The more she learns about her Gift, the more Kate fears that someone she loves will pay the price. The last thing she wants is to put the Guardians at risk, especially now that her relationship with Hassan has taken an unexpected turn. As Nathan reveals his troubled history with Eden, the Guardians worry about the impact it will have on their search for the dark and powerful Fallen Guardian Haddai. Haddai’s plan promises to be unlike anything they’ve dealt with before and could have devastating results for the Guardians. When they realize they aren’t as hidden as they thought, Kate is pushed toward the moment she’s been dreading—she’ll be forced to use her Gift and discover if it’s a blessing or a curse.

This series features some really enjoyable characters with entertaining superhero action, and this third installment is no exception. It was great to return to Kate's adventures, and I'm looking forward to future books in this series!
Everything I loved from the previous two books were back, and better than ever. Through the Smoke took things to the next level, in terms of action, tension, raised stakes, and character growth. As readers, we were given an even closer, more in-depth look at Kate and her friends, and my appreciation for each them was greatly deepened, (Hassan, especially). I'm rooting so hard for these characters!
This book was everything I wanted it to be, and more. And I am thrilled that we'll be getting another book in this series!
The third book is her Under Fire series was worth the wait!
Vandel is one of the authors who won me over to speculative fiction. The premise that Guardians were chosen by God and given superpowers to fight the fallen brethren on earth is masterfully written to the point where I'm looking for Pur tattoos (the sign of being chosen) on people.
The plot is very intriguing, but being inside Kate's mind is the what makes it worth the reader's journey. She is a typical teen that struggles with relationships with friends and family, self-worth, and body-image issues. She is slowly growing into her power as a Guardian and a woman, with an occasional victory and an occasional slip-up. By the third book I have to remind myself that Kate isn't really my friend, she's a character in a book.
The ending was satisfying, but there's enough tension with the handsome Guardian leader, Hassan, and the remaining fallen brethren that I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.
This series keeps getting better and better! Though the Smoke builds to a powerful ending laced with suspense and shocking new twists! I continue to love Kate’s journey and I’m excited to see where the next book will take her (I’m predicting the next title will involve “hope” and “embers”).
I loved the development of the relationships in this book! Vandel packed this story with so many emotional moments that seamlessly came together for a stunning conclusion, both happy and heartbreaking. I can’t wait to see how things progress!
I highly recommend all three books of the Under Fire series, especially if you enjoy X-men, high stakes, slow burn romance, and exhilarating action!
The third book in the series picks up precisely where the 2nd one ends, something the author is good at. The Guardians figure out more about Kate's gift. Kate and Hassan figure out something the readers of the first 2 books already knew. (Yay!) Ty discovers his Gift and is in shock by what he can do. We see both Kate and Ty going through subtle changes as she grows in strength and courage, and his attitude and behavior take an improved direction.
I loved the fire lizard! And I love the new covers for the series! Thanks, Kim, for an awesome read.
