Welcome to Eden. A vampire aristocracy weighted down by the iron shackles of rigid and sometimes cruel customs. Eden exists as all vampires once were—motivated by power, wealth, influence and sexual desire.
Oliver James Blakeley is a young purebred vampire raised in Eden. Although, he sincerely wishes that were not the case. He is isolated. Lonely. And his every move is controlled by his manipulative father, who has also saddled him with an arranged marriage.
Oliver yearns to be free. To live as a liberated vampire in the twenty-first century. He knows that this dream is outlandish given his circumstance. But when he encounters a suave, progressive and much older vampire during the preparation for his wedding, the trajectory of Oliver’s life shifts, and nothing will ever be the same.
All this jewelry ain’t no use when it’s this dark / It’s my favorite part, we see the lights, they got so far (Slide – Calvin Harris feat. Frank Ocean).
You know, this might come as a surprise, but I don’t actually go out of my way to read all these vampire stories, the truth is that they just seem to keep finding me anyway. Sometimes this leads to something that sucks (vampire joke ha ha), and sometimes I find another favorite! You can probably guess which category this one falls under. Anyway, enough dancing around it, this book was awesome! It had every little thing that I need in a book of this genre and then some. I especially loved the relationship drama! Betrothed to one but in love with another! It’s a tale as old as time and I seriously live for this stuff. It’s set up like a love-triangle but it’s really not (thank the heavens). Oliver is supposed to get married to his childhood bully (“pest” might be a better word), Alexander, in order to combine two powerful families for status and power or something. It’s all very Game of Thrones in that regard. The only problem is that Alexander is actually desperately in love, and Oliver… is not. Because he was never given a choice in the matter and has never had any agency his entire life due to overbearing parents (I was ready to put their names in the Death Note from their first appearance!), he could never really go through with the match. All this considered, of course he falls in love with the first person to make him jump the octave and actually treat him with love and care. Enter Aries, the super sexy answer to all his dreams. Actually, that reminds me, the only way this book could have been more perfect is if Aries were a little more interesting. He’s not terrible or anything, but everybody else in this book is so dazzling and pretty, him included, that those characteristics almost overshadow anything else he has going for him. Oh, you know what I would have loved? Since Aries is supposed to be way older than Oliver, wouldn't it be cool if he looked like one of those old classic horror movie vampires!? Everything else would be the same (his devotion and progressiveness), but instead Oliver would be getting freaky deaky with Nosferatu! Hey, a guy could dream right? I’ll just watch The Shape of Water and get it out of my system. Anyway, it’s a little funny because we honestly see more of Oliver and Alexander sharing the page than the actual love-interest! Though, at the end of the day, I’m totally fine with that.
It helps that I really enjoyed their dynamic! It’s cool because if this were any other book, Oliver would have ended up with Alexander after his whole self-improvement arc. See, Alexander is surprisingly the one who goes through the most character development in this book. At the start, he’s one of those unbearable royal jerks who always has some snide remark or put down for Oliver. It's one of those "he's mean because he likes you" kind of thing that I never understood. Every time Oliver calls him out on his behavior, he refuses to listen and claims that he’s simply being “brutally honest” to him in order to help him come out of his shell. They even do that thing I hate in books where they have all the other side-characters talk about how “it's fine, don't fret, he’s really such a softie deep down," but… that’s not enough, is it? Eventually he does get better (he’s actually my favorite character), but all the character development in the world can’t force someone to love you. There’s still too much resentment. Contaminated waters and all that. Like I said, I’ve read books where this line of thinking, forgiveness and moving forward, were the basic morals of the story, but thankfully that’s not the case here. Some people don’t need that; Oliver is a sensitive guy and he needs someone who’s sensitive to that. It’s tragic in a way because it’s pretty much flat out stated that these two could have ended up happy, with Oliver genuinely falling for Alexander if he’d simply listened to anything he had to say. Instead, he’d just continue to make the situation worse and worse by continuing to belittle Oliver time and time again. He fumbled it, there’s no way around it. Some mf’s are always trying to ice-skate uphill. Alexander is getting his own book later, so maybe try “gentle honesty” next time, buddy. Aside from all the messy relationship drama, this book also takes the time to explore themes of societal change through an ancient, traditional society of vampires. That's where the meat is! It's always nice when a book doesn't just do one thing, but two things. Two things, can you believe it!? Besides, vampires are always so unchanging and rigid, that they're the perfect literary vehicle to ask these questions, so it’s kind of a shame that we don’t get more stories like this one. Everything else feels too stuck on just having sexy vampires run around. Oh well, until then, I’m more than happy with Vampires of Eden, where we get a rich story with a deep thematic resonance... and sexy vampires running around.
"When I open my eyes the next morning, I find that I did not die from embarrassment. Shame. I definitely wish that I had."
This book explores heavy themes, and the author addresses them exceptionally well. I found myself in tears as I read about Oliver's life. His feelings of suffocation and isolation from others resonated deeply with me. Even with his sister, Oliver couldn't fully be himself, as there were limits to how much she could understand him. I related to that struggle. His situation felt like a nightmare, but I loved how Aries played a crucial role in helping him break out of his shell and gain confidence. Their bond brought a sense of hope and growth that was truly inspiring. I appreciated the author’s insight that once you dismantle the barriers you've built to protect yourself, it becomes challenging to retreat into hiding. Oliver's relationship with Aries is healthy, there’s nothing toxic about it. Their love is mature and gentle, and the elements of consent portrayed are beautiful. However, the repetitive conversations toward the end did become a bit annoying, but that was easy to overlook. In contrast, Oliver and Alexander had a slightly toxic relationship. While Oliver believes they could have been happy together in another life, I feel that their relationship would always be tinged with a mix of resentment and love. Even after having deep discussions, they could never fully align, one of them would always be a bit off since their perspectives on life were so different. The author’s writing style is both peaceful and raw, and I love how she portrays love and relationships. I’m excited to dive into the second book—I’m sure it will make me cry even more.
“Even still, you definitely don’t have to, especially since… well, I’m making things complicated for you.”
“Correct.”
I laugh. “That was blunt.”
“You are. This is a truth that we can’t deny. However, you’re also just…” He sighs, meeting my eyes. “You’re very different.”
“I’m strange.” I grin. “Erratic.”
“No. Unconventional. Completely unexpected.”
The cover was screaming bi-shounen vibes, so yes, naturally, I was lured to give Vampires of Eden: Book One Oliver a try. 😍 And even though it is a new author to me, I didn't quite have that bad a time with what I thought would be a more dark and sinister vampire story, actually was a very cozy and soft, and very much character-driven one, instead. ✨
“Someday, when someone asks me if I’ve ever truly felt the pull of my nature, I want to recall this vampire to my mind—to remember him and imagine what could have been given a different situation.
A different life.”
Oliver was a sweet and innocent protagonist; at 22, he finally has to get married to Alexander, who he's been betrothed to since they were seven years old. But, it's the farthest thing he wants to do; sheltered all his life, never free to do as he pleases, all he wants is a chance to live a life of his own. To care for someone he wants to have feelings for - to have his aura awaken for someone he cares for - and when he meets Aries, the designer assigned for their wedding - 'the embodiment of his wildest dreams', everything changes. 🩶
The story is heavily centered on Oliver and his character growth - as a vampire - confident in his own skin and in himself and his ambitions and who he is. His relationship with Aries, 'a liberated vampire living his life exactly the way he wants and traveling the world. an artist perfecting his craft', is the stepping stone he needs to gain the courage to break free of the restraints his family has put on him. Aries saw him for who he really was - he saw how talented he was, he was patient and kind with him, so very polite and gentle and acquiesce to his feelings and interest. 🥹 He always put himself in a lesser light in front of Oliver, hindered by the fact that he was a first-gen vampire, but Oliver never let himself feel weak in front of him, especially when it was Aries giving Oliver the strength to believe in himself more - 'you’re a dangerous creature, Oliver James Blakeley.' To have the courage to stand up and fight for himself - to be strong in his beliefs and know that there is a good in him - that he is special enough for people's respect.
Rather, it was comforting to see that as much Oliver offered Aries free rein to do as he pleases, pleasure him in ways that he's never experienced or felt before, because his desire for him is so true - the aura of his nature is drawing him towards him. 'He warms me all over and gives me every sensation. A comforting acceptance I’ve never known. This delight and reassurance that I feel… it gives me strength. I want to hold on to it. I want to make it into a fundamental part of my being and carry it with me always. 🥺 It was described so sensually, wanton with such want and that pull - it was a nice touch to the story - I liked Oliver's reactions to it when his inner heart would be revealed and how much it affected Aries so. And yes, the peonies touch was adorable - Aries is actually very adorable with Oliver, as stoic as demure as he is, even if he doesn't realize it. ❤️🩹
“You don’t hate me,” he says quietly. “But you don’t love me, either. There won’t ever be a chance for us, because I can’t compete with him.
He’s the one who holds your heart. He was there for you when I wasn’t.”
But, because much of the story is centered on Oliver's marriage to Alexander, Aries is not featured as much; rather, to me, it was really Alexander's dynamic with Oliver that left a more lasting impression on me. He started off as such a self-centered prick, sorry, I meant, prince, almost forcing Oliver to behave in certain aspects and manners. It was hard to stomach at first how much they had to publicly show their affections - I was mortified for Oliver, but as much as Oliver's personality changes because of Aries, it's with Alexander, who he really had the chance to change with the most.
And I liked how it was portrayed; I liked how he fought back against Alexander, made him realize the error of his ways, which actually served as a stepping stone of character development for both of them. As much as I cheered Oliver on for standing up for himself and calling Alexander out for his treatment of him, their final scene was a little heart-breaking for me. The trust he has to earn back to be at Oliver's side again, as friends - it actually made for a much more appealing part of the story than Oliver's romance with Aries. Shocker, I know. 😆
“Yes, you Eden vampires are, as usual, the most extreme with your cultural practices. Being addicted to you but not having you. Constantly endeavoring to replace you and find my next fix.”
He lifts our hands and kisses the top of my knuckles. His eyes flicker up and he grins. “You are lovely, though. An unforeseen and overwhelming temptation.”
The writing and setting was a strange toss-up between archaic and modern, which was a unique mix for me. The dialogue was very fresh and up-beat and latest-ish, but I would still sometimes get this impression that their surroundings were those of the olden days - complete with candlelight and dungeons - despite the usage of cell-phones and social media. 🤷🏻♀️ The author had this strange way to mold the writing to fit the characters present at the scene. Hmmm, how to describe it? It's like when Oliver was with Aries, the writing was very calming and comforting - I could notice this sense of peace would settle in the words - reflective of Oliver's own emotions. And when Oliver and Alexander were together, it was more harried, more tense - heightening the fear and anxiety threatening to overwhelm Oliver when he was around him. But, then as Alexander changes, it becomes less upsetting and kind of quiet - like the nature itself was reverberating in the story. 👍🏻
It's a strange detail to point out, but it's something that stood out for me. There were a few editing mistakes here and there, but not enough to detract me overall. And surprisingly, I am actually looking forward to the next book featuring Alexander. As much as I was happy to see Oliver and Aries get their HEA, he really stole the stole the narrative, in my opinion. He is a flawed character who still has room for growth and the chance to redeem himself in more ways than one; and I'm curious to know what the mystery is behind him and a certain someone. ☺️
I always know I can depend on Karla Nikole to write a story that feels like wrapping yourself up in the coziest, snuggliest blanket in the whole world; just a perpetual warm hug that makes reality dim and everything in your periphery go soft and hazy.
There is a certain atmosphere in Karla Nikole's writing that has become her signature and something that I have become exceedingly fond of. Oliver's story has all that same atmosphere & sweetness but with a uniqueness that stands apart from her previous works.
Oliver & Aries are everything that is good - the very definition of unconditional love. After an initial encounter that throws Oliver's sense of reality into a tailspin, their relationship grows slowly and beautifully; culminating into something absolutely magnificent. And the spice? Delicious.
I love the overall tone of freedom and artistry that's maintained in the story. I think I made a comparison in my review for Book 1 of Lore & Lust that Karla Nikole writes with a paintbrush - there's a visual aspect in her writing that is ever present and I continually find the most beautiful colors bursting in my imagination while the story progresses. It makes me want to paint. Nothing shows the value of art more than when a work of an artist in one medium inspires the work of another.
As far as plots go, I loved the way this story unfolded - especially Oliver's character development! While Aries was the conduit that sparked his fight for freedom, I really appreciate that he doesn't allow himself to become dependent on him in a way that may be unhealthy for either of them. They're just so careful with each other; it makes my heart melt. I also loved that while their romance was the focal point for the story, it didn't take away from Oliver's individual growth at all. Additionally, everything in the background and all the characters were still wonderfully complex.
Oh lord, and don't even get me started on Alexander. I am so absurdly excited to hear his story next. If I thought Oliver's character development was impressive, Alexander's was breathtaking. There were some subtle but not subtle hints, so I already have a theory on our love interest and I sincerely hope I'm right.
✧While I received a free ebook from the author, all thoughts are my own.✧
- Present Tense. Why? 🙄 - Misplaced modifiers & dangling modifiers. <--- Not pretty. 😐 - This story needs to be shorter, tighter. What we have rn is a spaghetti version. - The writing is pretentious. Why use big words in simple situations? - Everybody constantly telling Oliver how magnificent and smart and brave and fabulous and beautiful he is. All the time. 🤮 I stopped caring and started skipping pages. - Little on-page abuse. It's mostly Oliver whining about it. - Aries and his "you must take action" BS. Aries was lucky enough to gain his independence without moving a finger when he turned 30, and yet he had a nerve to push Oliver hard to just up and leave the castle, to defy his abusive father. Oliver, a 22 year old sheltered and abused young men, who had no clue how to get away and how to provide for himself, with no connections, no money, no help. Sure, Aries, it's easy-peasy, no sweat. Blame the victim. - Oliver had finally confronted his father. What a stupid. ass. move. I blame Aries. - There was a certain action taken at 75%. The plan was hastily made, but quite a few things were put together for it to succeed. Except for one very very important part, which wasn't even too hard to arrange. So, why couldn't it be done? Because how else would we have Alexander save the day?
The final nail in this cluster is the vampires themselves. There is nothing explicitly (or even vaguely) vampiric about them, except for the fangs and a special diet that consists of blood. Vampires can only consume the blood of their peers, not lowly humans' and not lowly first-generation vampires'. The sun is perfectly fine. Garlick is fine. Holy water, silver - fine. At this point, I say take your iron pills.
I am not sure why this story called for vampires. Could be characters with diabetes, gluten-free or vegan diet.
Nothing works as well as a Karla Nikole’s books to get me out of a reading slump !
I’ll write a proper review once I’m done crying and get some sleep lol
EDIT :
In this new series from Karla Nikole, we get to see a different side of her well-crafted vampire lore and world. In Lore & Lust, we were told about and witnessed glimpses of it, but here we see how deep it truly runs. She plunges readers into an aristocratic yet sensual world, bound by centuries-old customs, outdated views, and rigid class distinctions. There is a striking contrast between the way these vampires live compared to those who have freed themselves from this life of servitude, simply because their blood is not as pure.
I feel that, especially with everything happening in the world today, this story is also a powerful reflection of how rigid beliefs can suffocate people and dim their light.
The greed for power and titles was portrayed incredibly well. It did not feel like these vampires were just villains added for the sake of having an enemy. Karla Nikole excels at giving depth and life to every character, even the ones we are meant to hate. It is truly fascinating. She also does a wonderful job of grounding the story in emotional realism.
The romance between Oliver and Aries was perfect : sweet, sensual, and forbidden. Their relationship develops slowly, built on honest communication and undeniable chemistry. Karla Nikole is absolutely the queen of consent, and that made every step of their growing bond feel tender and meaningful.
Oliver’s relationships with the other characters were also very well developed, which left me eager to see what will happen to them next. While the romance is at the heart of the story, the friendships and family bonds are just as thoughtfully written and deeply explored.
We are brought into a thrilling society ruled by aura, feeding, and strict rules, and yet it feels like one of the most original vampire systems I have ever read. It is truly captivating. I think she may have ruined other vampire stories for me, because I doubt I will ever enjoy another take on vampires as much as I love hers. There were so many twists and unique elements in this world, Karla Nikole has done something truly special.
I have complicated feelings towards this one. I've eaten up every one of karla nikoles books and will continue to do so because they're such guilty pleasures for me. Ive gotten used to her writing style and while its no where near the best thing ive ever read, ive always had a good time. This one just had me fighting through it. I think that's more of a me problem because I don't like sheltered/naive main characters so I had trouble liking Oliver. I also did not like the relationship he had with Aries all that much. I just think there wasn't enough substance put into them like other couples this author has written before. I don't think Aries is much of a character at all to be honest. I have complicated feelings because for the first like 60% of this book i wanted to dnf it but after that I was hooked. I think it's because Oliver was actually allowed to grow as a character past that point and it didn't make being in his head unbearable. The saving grace for this book was Alexander. I thought the most interesting part of the whole story was his and Oliver's complicated situation and their interactions were my favorite part of the book. I'm positively optimistic that I'm going to vastly prefer his story, so I am going to continue. Obviously. 3.5 🌟
"You taste like liquid gold. Like life-giving energy. Honey, light and ginger. Like love."
This book was such a fun ride! At first I rated this 4 stars, but as I was going back through my notes to write the review, I got caught up in so many of the quotes and ended up changing it to a 5-star. Because I kept getting sucked back in..... so why not?!
This was such an interesting story. I had previously read the first book in this author's "Lore and Lust" series, so I was familiar with the world and the customs. If you were not previously familiar, however, the world is easy to fall into and understand.
Oliver is a purebred vampire, raised in a stuffy and oppressive household. He is manipulated heavily by his father, who treats him more like a prisoner than his child. He is scheduled to marry his childhood acquaintance, Alexander, in an arranged marriage, one his father needs to secure the financial future of his family in the purebred culture.
Poor, sweet Oliver. Despite ME falling for Alexander, Ollie definitely DID NOT, and so he feels trapped-- try as he might, he can't conjure up any positive feelings for Alexander- he doesn't even really like him as a friend. He yearns for a real connection with someone- and he desperately wishes to be free of his duties as a purebred and to live as a liberated vampire.
When Oliver is introduced to Aries, the first gen vampire who is in charge of designing and creating the clothing for his upcoming wedding, everything changes. For the first time, Oliver's nature responds wildly to another vampire- and he wants nothing more than to explore this connection.
"Right now, I'm not like a beige wall. I feel electrified- neon pink and iridescent."
Despite lots of the vamp world changing the rules after all these years- purebreds bonding and mating with first and second gen vampires-- Oliver's family and the island of Eden where he resides is completely and totally behind in that regard. Steeped in old money and tradition, there is no way he could ever convince his father to let him follow his heart.
But- the heart wants what it wants- and so Oliver, being young, and this being the first time his inner nature had responded to anyone- has no clue how to control himself and rein in these new feelings. I really enjoyed all of the vampirey-body-nature-aura stuff we had happening here- Oliver's eyes alighted for the first time in Aries' presence, rendering him totally mortified- and upon just seeing Aries enter the room at an estate dinner- he flung his aura out without even being aware, causing a little of a riot. So much fun- hot- interesting and new!
There wasn't a lot of spice in this book, but the spice there was I thoroughly enjoyed. I definitely loved the pining- there was no shortage of pining- and I also really loved Alexander's character. It was obvious we were being set up to read his story next, and holy hell- while Oliver's story was good, Alexander's story (his character in general) stole my whole heart in the second book.
"I don't love him, but something deep down tells me that I could have. If my life had been different."
This is a perfect duology to pick up if you are looking for something fun to escape into for a few hours! I will be back tomorrow to review (and rave about) Alexander's book!
I’m not going to lie, I totally bought this book because of the cover and I saw a friend say it was good.
Good is such a bland word for this book. This story is gorgeous and absolutely stunning. The way Karla weaves this tale is just mind blowing. I was rooting for our Oliver to be able to escape and find out who he truly is without his shackles, and how his friends that he didn’t know about helped him, how they became a sort of family? Ugh. Yes.
His relationship with Aries was beautiful and I loved how Oliver had someone to help him feel like he belonged somewhere.
I can only cross my fingers that somehow, somewhere, Alexander finds his HEA. I feel like his character was truly kind and I enjoyed watching him slowly learn and grow. It was painful to know how much he loved Oliver when you know he’s in love with someone else, so yeah, I do hope he gets a HEA somehow.
I’m so happy to have been pulled in by this cover because this story was pure perfection.
This book gets an automatic 3 stars because I had to keep bringing myself back to read.
I’m glad Ollie and Aries got their HEA, and what Ollie went through was crap, but I didn’t like how he treated Alexander. This was my main complaint throughout the book and I nearly walked away.
When I want fantasy, this is what I am talking about. That type of lyrical writing. Loved it with a passion. And with this story we got Alexander and I can’t wait to finish his book. He’s going to be my sad boy. Even though we get a HEA for Oliver, someone else’s heart was breaking and I need it to mend.
….
“…but because my eyes alight for them.” // “…subtle and calm, like a warm whisper. But now, it’s thick as I breathe in, and my nature is shifting inside me in ways it never has.” // “How could anyone forget the sensation of their blood rushing like scorching, sparkling champagne inside of them?” // “You apologize for everything because you’ve been taught that your thoughts and feelings aren’t valid, but that’s wrong…” // “As if you were uniquely cultivated for my undoing.” // “Out there, please? I would like to dance with you properly.” // “Your existence is not empty, because you are a complete, clever and striking vampire with much more to offer than you even realize. // “Right now, I’m not like a beige wall. I feel electrified—neon pink and iridescent.” // “We want him, my nature demands, vigorously pulsating all through me. He is the one.” // “He exists to my mind, heart and essence like sound.” // “Hi.” …
This was cute! I love Karla’s vampire novels, she’s crafted such a unique parallel world that’s fun to read about. I loved Oliver and Aries but found some of their arguments and conversations repetitive. I can’t wait to read Alexander’s novel and see how he’s grown as a person
I didn't know what to expect with this book, but it definitely wasn't what I got, in the best possible way. While this was a romance novel, there was so much more to it than that. The fantasy/paranormal aspect of the book was only a small part, but really added to the overall story. There were so many metaphors and ties to real world problems (poverty, elitism, etc.). And my GOD, THE WRITING. It was so beautiful and elaborate.
I cannot wait for Alexander's book (Team Alexander 4 Lyfe).
She did it again. Another heartwarming vampire romance with a healthy relationship. I loved Oliver and his stiry very much. The only things that were missing for me was the pov from his significant other cause I liked that very much in her previous books. Also for me this book could have been longer cause some cinflict seemed a bit rushed for me. All in all it was a great book.
I loved the Lore and Lust series and I was so excited to delve into a new world with Karla, and this new world did not disappoint! This story starts with Oliver, a purebred vampire living in the antiquated Eden. His father treats him at best as a tool to gain power, and at worst as a burden and a nuisance. Oliver lives in a tower in the castle, but it may as well be a prison. As his nearing an arranged marriage with a powerful prince, Oliver meets Aries, the designer hired to make his wedding outfit. Aries is like no one Oliver has ever met. He’s smart, talented, and handsome, but he’s also gentle, kind and caring. He’s the first vampire in Oliver’s life to make him feel heard, understood, and important. As his wedding nears, Oliver wants to do something he’s never done before: make a choice for himself. Oliver grows so much in this story, and I love that Aries is not the reason, but the catalyst. Oliver has so much strength and bravery in him; he just needed someone to let him know it’s okay to be himself. A beautiful romance set in Karla’s unique vampiric world, with gorgeous characters finding their way. Side note…I am beyond excited for the story we’re getting in book 2!!!
love it when the final chapter of a story completely helps me solidify my rating with no worries.
this one truly has grown a lot since the time i got to see it in its beginning stages on patreon, and i feel happy :’)
same lovely & flowery writing as ever but staged in a setting where our mc, oliver, lives in a stifling environment that’s more insidious than the picture seems. i look forward to eventually getting to delve more into just how dynamic this specific part of the world i’ve come to know & its characters were. i have a very soft spot for the lore & lust universe and seeing this expansion made me appreciate this author’s worldbuilding on a whole other level, it really…was a good time. the brilliant character work (alexander!!!!!!!!! aries!!!!!!!) and soft romance made it even more satisfying.
I love this book, I loved Lore & Lust, I love this universe. The books are such comfort books to me. However, since the author seems so keen to include Italian, Spanish etc. dialogue within the text, I wish she would include translations. Be it right after the phrase, as a footnote or somewhere at the start or the end of the book, as long as they're included at all, I'm begging. Could I guess what is said from the context? Yes, probably. Could I just ignore it altogether? Sure. Could I look the translations up on my own? Sure. However, it is supremely annoying to do so as it disrupts the reading flow more than flipping a few pages would imo. It just leads to entirely unnecessary frustration.
“He tastes like summer, sunshine and freedom. Lazy, peaceful days and reading in the shade”
“Your existence is not empty, because you are a complete, clever and striking vampire with much more to offer than you ever realize”
“I don't want to be colorless and meek anymore. I want to speak up and be bold. To at least try”
“Falling is scary, but depending on where you land, it could be a magnificent ride. The landing might make every moment of the descend worth the fall”
“You're a bold creature, Oliver Blakeley. Fucking formidable”
“And you would never be a burden, because all you've ever done since the moment we met is set me free. All you've ever done is open my eyes, encourage and lift me up. It's like —you've given me wings, Aries! You could never restrict me because that's not who you are. That's not who we are. And I'd be thrilled to consider you and have you depend on me”
If you like reading the same long winded dialogue that honestly made me cringe (cause who talks like that…) for the first 50% of the book, this might be for you. It was WAY too long for so little to be happening. I also didn’t realize that this would fall more into the insta-love category….which I dislike (ok I can say hate) with a passion…
Don’t get me wrong, the prose was beautiful but I was so over it at one point that I skipped a looottt of it, just to get to the end. Don’t know if I’ll read the next one. The thing is, the idea is good, just kinda not well executed and I’m not sure if it’s worth it.
This book is such a beautiful story. The world building is magnificent. The prose is lyrical. This is a unique take on vampire lore and a book you can lose yourself in.
What a wonderful story. I absolutely love this world and the whole take on vampires its so fresh. Great characters and I was hooked from the first chapter. I'm new to this author so I have to go back to her previous books in this world because I've got questions!! Like how the neck do they procreate? Is mpreg A thing here? I'm all for it if so. My heart needs Thomas to have happiness and love. I really want his story and I'd like to think his husband truly is deserving of him.
I devoured this book and loved every minute of Oliver’s story.
Oliver is a purebred vampire raised in an aristocracy world where old fashion traditions are in place to protect pure blood lines. Since Oliver was a child his future has been mapped out for him and for who he would marry. Oliver can’t stand his soon to be husband and wishes for a free lifestyle where he can make his own choices. Once he encounters Aries, a sophisticated designer who’s come to make his wedding outfit, Oliver’s life is instantly changed and things will never be the same again.
Anything with scent or fated mates bodies reacting to each other in some way is a win. I loved it every time their eyes would alight letting the other vampire know he was aroused and interested in the other person 🥵.
Aries and Oliver’s relationship gave me all the best feelings. I swooned hard for these vampires and loved all the pinning. When they finally gave in to temptation I melted into a puddle on the floor 🫠.
We also get to meet Alexander who is Oliver’s soon to be future partner. At the start you see him as this spoiled royal brat who always gets what he wants, then as the story goes on you see how many layers the prince has and that he truly does care for Oliver. I can’t wait to get stuck into Alexander’s story and see how he gets his hea.
A sweet and thoughtful story, Oliver and Aries were a treat!
In the society of Eden, where vampires are divided into strict castes based on blood “purity”, Oliver is the purebred son of a cruel and grasping father. Ollie chafes at his rigid expectations, including an arranged marriage to fellow purebred, Alexander. Aries, a member of a lower caste, is the lauded fashion designer hired to style the wedding garb of Alexander and Oliver. The connection between Oliver and the older, more worldly Aries is immediate and powerful, but their social obstacles seem insurmountable, and Oliver’s father is ruthless in his pursuit of social advancement.
The social commentary in this book is nuanced, reminiscent of many historical systems of oppression including medieval serfdom, Victorian England, and the American Jim Crow era. I feel the tone manages to be pointed without veering into preachiness. Oliver’s feelings of suffocation and his liberal beliefs are as important to the storyline as his love for Aries.
The love story is sweet and relatively low angst, with high focus on emotional connection but still featuring some good spice! And I’m a sucker for any kind of sexy-time magic 👀 As a longtime fantasy reader, I did find the world-building to be too vague at times, leaving me with some lingering questions.
The true standout of this show is Alexander, the spurned fiancé! I adore him, my heart broke for him, and when I tell you I RACED to his book! I definitely recommend this if you’re in the mood for PNR that is lighter on the fantasy elements, with beautiful writing and character depth.
