Archbishop Obrukhe’s prodigal daughter, Eloviano returns to Pakurumo for her best friend’s wedding and ends up making a deal she never thought she’d ever agree to. But the bigger surprise comes when she finds love where she least expects to.

I wanted more from the character development for all the key characters in the story but I liked that the plot was fast-paced and warm. I also liked that it was a good retelling of the biblical parable of the prodigal son albeit from an Afrocentric female perspective with a sprinkle of some closed door, Christian centered romance.

This book was chaotic, funny and absolutely dramatic. There’s romance, church politics, family drama and of course a cutesy romance. It felt like a movie and I devoured it in two sittings.
Eloviano, the FMC is so imperfect and I love her for it. She goes through this journey of finding herself and struggles with rediscovering her faith. She’s also very stubborn which I can personally relate to.
She showed those church elders shege and I enjoyed every minute of it.🤣 She did not take her foot off their neck from beginning to end.

Now, the romance. This is a slow burn. The kind where you’re literally just clawing at your book and begging them to just kiss. 🧎🏽‍♀️Elo and Datonye have such amazing chemistry and tension and I loved every scene of them together.
The religion aspect of this book also didn’t feel preachy. It just felt like i was going along on the journey of someone(Elo) who is finding her faith again, all while falling in love with a gorgeous man.
I lowkey wish there will be a little novella about them just being in a relationship and living their lives because I want more of them.
Also, I’m really interested in Zino(Elo’s sister) and I really can’t wait to read her own book. She seemed like she has a lot of personal struggles and I also want to see how she and Elo repair their relationship.
This was an overall lovely read and i definitely recommend it you’re into no spice, Christian romance.

The Bishop’s Prodigal Daughter is a breath of fresh air.

No seriously, I completed this book in less than four hours. The story follows our FMC, Elo, who amongst other things, is fierce, and hotheaded. She’s also a self proclaimed nonbeliever. Elo returns home to Bayelsa for a wedding after being involved in a scandal in Lagos. At the wedding she runs into handsome, charming and very “Christian” Datonye.

Their story is filled with drama, ups, downs, but it’s also very sweet. I loved EVERYTHING about this book. The writing, the plot, the characters. I loved that despite how overbearing some church elders were, Elo held her own. Loved Datonye’s charisma and self-assuredness.

There was a rightness to this book that I really appreciated. So if you’re still considering getting this book, take this as your sign and just read the damn book.

I would’ve liked this more if the story just followed Elo and her self discovery without the romance plot.

The Bishop’s Prodigal Daughter by Timendu Aghahowa

I’ve been looking forward to this book for the longest time! It’s been on my TBR list since 2023, and I finally got to read it yesterday.

I’m still unsure about how I feel, especially about Elo’s character. There’s so much drama and existential crisis surrounding her. The story portrays Elo’s conflicts with her family, her faith, and her identity—but her journey left me raising my brow a lot.

For example: someone who doesn’t believe in God being asked to preach sermons during services? What was going on there?

The book also had quite a few no-context situations and sporadic introductions of characters that didn’t seem to contribute much to the story (e.g., Turi, Tosan, and Tuoyo). Their presence felt unnecessary.

I struggled with the unresolved conflicts between characters.

•Why didn’t Elo and Zino reconcile?
•What was the deal between Zino and Tosan?
•Did the Archbishop and the Kiah family truly reconcile, or did they just sweep their issues under the rug?
•Did Mabel ever get closure over her husband’s death?
•Why didn’t Elo confront her mother about her father’s supposed suicide?

Finally, I found Elo and Datonye’s relationship underwhelming. How did they go from strangers (with Elo not even recognizing him) to falling head over heels in love? The development felt rushed, and their chemistry was weak. Plus, how did they resolve the celibacy stalemate?

I really hope there’s a sequel—only then would the cliffhangers and unanswered questions make sense.

I picked up The Bishop’s Prodigal Daughter with high expectations. It was everywhere, but for me, it didn’t quite hit the mark.

It’s a heartwarming story about family, faith, and second chances, with a fair share of twists.

The book introduces us to Elo, a prodigal daughter who only planned to return home for her best friend’s wedding and leave immediately.

But her mother had other plans. A heart attack wasn’t part of the agenda, but it kept Elo from leaving as quickly as she intended.

From stepping into her mother’s shoes as the Archbishop to falling for her childhood friend(Datonye) —a former family rival—it’s a beautifully complicated story. But I expected more.

Elo’s life in Lagos is different from the one she’s expected to live in Pakurumo. There, she’s supposed to uphold the church’s legacy, yet she’s carrying the weight of her past—a life, a scandal, a sextape. Juggling expectations, duty, and personal happiness, she struggles to please everyone while staying true to herself. In the process, she neglects her sister’s feelings—not entirely her fault, though, since her sister never actually sat down to talk to her.

And then the book ends on a cliffhanger. A real cliffhanger.

Elo didn’t get married.

She didn’t fix things with her sister.

And her sister’s love life? Still hanging in the air. She hasn’t even admitted she’s in love with her best friend or that she’s willing to be his baby mama.

So, yeah. It’s a good book, but I needed more—more resolution, more depth, more closure.

A gripping yet easy read. I wanted to read romance without the usual traumatic backdrops that most African novels I read have. The Bishop's Prodigal Daughter is an excellent romance between Elo (the eponymous character) and Datonye, the pastor from guess, a somewhat rival church.
However a lot of subplots were underdeveloped and barely touched on, prompting me to feel that then they should never have been included. Tosan and Zino's relationship, Tiru, Elo's friend who is revealed to have a child with Tosan (apparently his baby mama is believed to be dead). Also I felt more background could have been given to the events that led to the way things were in the present, like Elo's sextape, her father's death , her relationship with the dad, and how she became an atheist, considering the strong religious family she was born into.
All in all, the Bishop's Prodigal Daughter is an excellent read.

If you have ever heard or read the story of the prodigal son in the Bible, you will know that this book is an exact replica of that story.

The prodigal child in this case is Elo, who left the nest in order to do something for herself, who didn't want to be tied down to some church belief and God, who left because it was the best for her. She was into artist management, and a tape was released; you should already know what type of tape I'm talking about.

Elo, the daughter of an archbishop, leaves her religious upbringing to pursue her own life—and things don’t exactly go as planned. This is a solid coming-of-age story, with a strong theme of grace and God’s enduring presence.

The romance between Elo and Dantonye felt underdeveloped, more surface-level than heartfelt—but that’s okay, because Elo is the focus here.

Overall, don’t go in expecting a love story—this one’s about self-discovery, redemption, and faith.

At its core, the Bishop’s Prodigal Daughter is the love story of Elo and Datonye.

Elo is determined to live life on her terms even if it costs her the approval of her mom (an archbishop) and the whole of Pakurumo. Elo is strong-willed, talks back, anger is her go-to emotion, she doesn’t fear anybody’s mummy, and she might have a thing for her childhood friend who is now a fine pastor.

I like Elo’s character a lot. She’s one of those stubborn characters who are refreshing to see in fiction, though irl, they might come across as problematic.

My heart 😭❤️
I loved this book so much. Managed to devour it in one sitting because it was THAT good. It touched all the beautiful topics. I hope we get a chance to see Elo fix her relationship with her mum and her sister. I kinda feel like I’ve been left on a cliffhanger on so many issues, I hope there’s another one coming. The love story was absolutely beautiful. Elo frustrated me a bit and that’s why we’re giving this a four. 😂
But overall it was so beautiful and to think I almost didn’t read it

The bishop’s prodigal daughter is a heartwarming and engaging novel by Timendu Aghahowa , it follows the story of Eloviana a strong-willed and hot-headed young woman who returns to her hometown for her best friend's wedding. As the bishop's daughter, Elo has a complicated relationship with her family and faith, which is further strained by a scandalous past. The romance between Elo and Datonye is the central theme of the story, their love becomes a source of redemption and healing for both characters.

I think this novel is a breath of fresh air and overall a good read.

Emmmmm
Hmmmmmmm
Elo's journey is a wild ride - chaotic, dramatic, and full of emotions 🌪️.
I loved Elo's relatability and tenacity 💪, and the slow-burn romance with Datonye was 🔥. However, some subplots felt underdeveloped 🌱, and the pacing was a bit off.
Despite its flaws, the book's unique blend of humor, drama, and faith won me over 🌟. I'm hoping for a sequel to tie up loose ends 📚.

Maybe not just my cup of tea ☕️

Loved it! A sweet simple story of redemption and forgiveness. Loved how easy to read it was. Each scene flowed seamlessly into the next.
And the love story between Elo and Durotanye was so heartwarming.
The family dynamic is also refreshing.
A feel good story about a girl coming back home after running away from her background for so long.
I recommend

I loved it!!! A story about a sheep coming back into the fold gets me any time. Elo returns to her hometown for a friend’s wedding hoping and scheming to not run into her family members but God had other plans for her. Enjoyable plot but I really wanted to know how things evolved between Tosan and Zion.

I absolutely loved The Bishop’s Daughter! The writing was so witty and relatable—it honestly felt like I was having a conversation with a friend. I found myself talking to the book, laughing, feeling all kinds of emotions, and by the end, I was smiling from ear to ear. It’s one of those stories I could totally read again and again. Just so good!

I really enjoyed reading this one. Started off a bit slow but I’m happy I pushed through. Everything really kicked off once she got to the island. I really enjoyed this and even had to reread some scenes because of how much I enjoyed them. I don’t agree with how some things panned out, but it was a great read.

A Christain novel with closed door romance , shows us that we can always come back to God and he will help us guide our steps back
The book got me in emotions , I realized we need to seek God for ourselves not because we are born into a Christian home
The writer did a good job making us imagine what a good Niger delta town would look like and a great use of Ijaw names making it feel like home

I loved it, it was the first book, I read in January and I lived, it wasn't cliche or the usual Christian romance. It was amazing.
Second chance, finding one's faith, redemption, forgiveness and Love.
