Born officially in 2000, Chhattisgarh is one of those states that we know exists but about which we actually know very little. Whether composed of 36 forts, giving it the name Chhattisgarh, or being the Empire of Chedi, i.e., 'Chedisgarh,' which later became Chhattisgarh, it remains one of the lesser-known and overlooked states in Bharat. The suspense arising from this ignorance created fascination and excitement in me to learn more about it.

I was fortunate to come across this book, which provides comprehensive knowledge about all important aspects and matters regarding Chhattisgarh, from its distant past to the present.

The author delves into the issue of Naxalism, conducting on-the-ground research and analysis in Chandigarh to uncover the real reasons behind it. The author also raises significant questions about the handling of intelligence on explosives possessed by the Naxalites, putting soldiers' lives at risk by not making appropriate decisions and addressing how the Naxalites obtained these explosives and other materials.

The vivid descriptions of different temples in Chhattisgarh, including those associated with the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with delightful additions of colorful photos of these places, were some of my favorite parts of this book. It not only includes Hindu temples but also Jain and Buddhist ones. The archaeological sites were fascinating enough to make us imagine the glory of the place during the time these structures existed.

Additionally, the palaces, waterfalls of Jagdalpur, Chitrakoot, and other amazing places in Chhattisgarh, described with beautiful pictures, tempted me to visit all these places soon. There are many fascinating facts as well, such as the longest festival in the world and the worship of Ravana, which many of us have heard about but don't know much in detail.

I must praise the author's and editor's skills for providing so much knowledge. The information about places, their history, and the stories associated with them, all presented in a concise manner, within around 200 pages, allows even a casual reader to enjoy it. The division of topics into small parts was really helpful in this regard.

We genuinely need individuals like the author who dedicate time, money, and energy not only to collect information but also to present it in an engaging and entertaining manner. I can see the hard work put into this book by the author, and I genuinely thank her for offering us the opportunity to learn about Chhattisgarh in such an amazing way. I would have never imagined learning so much in so few pages and feeling so overwhelmed while reading it.

Trust me, I've not even covered 0.1% of the book, and it stands as one of my best non-fiction reads of the year. I thoroughly enjoyed every page, chapter, and topic, along with the visuals, which I don't even know how to elaborate on. So, I'll simply urge you all to go, get it, and see for yourselves, as I'm not going to reveal anything more in this review.

It reveals fascinating but little-known aspects of the state, delving into important subjects like Naxalism and Ratanpur's distinctive worship of Hanumanji in the form of a woman.

As a travel enthusiast who has wandered through various corners of the globe, I am constantly on the hunt for destinations that are not just visually stunning but also rich in culture and history. "Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries" by Muneeta Aneja brilliantly encapsulates such a place. This book isn't just a guide; it's a window into the soul of Chhattisgarh, a state in India that amany have heard of but few have truly explored.

Muneeta Aneja has informatively talked about the roots of Naxalism. This is especially enlightening to someone with limited background of the same. She has beautifully covered the history of this state including not only the roots of Ramayana and Mahabharata, but also the dynasties that existed and the freedom fighters during the British Rule.

From the get-go, the author’s narrative style is engaging and informative, making you feel like you're walking alongside her through the dense forests, ancient temples, and bustling markets of Chhattisgarh. The vivid descriptions of the local cuisine, traditional dances, and artisan crafts are so immersive, I could almost smell the spices and hear the music.

What sets this book apart is its focus on the 'hidden' aspects of Chhattisgarh. The author doesn't just highlight popular tourist spots; she delves into the lesser-known treasures - the folklore, the tribal communities, and the archaeological wonders that are often overshadowed by more famous Indian attractions.

Her chapters on the state's history and its role in Indian mythology add a depth that you seldom find in travel books. It's this blend of travelogue, cultural anthropology, and historical narrative that makes "Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries" a must-read for any travel enthusiast. It's not just about seeing a place; it's about experiencing and understanding it.

The photography in the book deserves a special mention. The images are breathtaking, capturing the essence of Chhattisgarh's landscapes and people in a way that complements the book’s storytelling. Each photograph feels like a story in itself.

In conclusion, Muneeta Aneja's "Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries" is more than just a travel guide; it's an inspiration. It compels you to look beyond the obvious and explore the depths of a place. After reading this book, Chhattisgarh is definitely on my travel list.

A must read for any history buff, or traveller, curious about Chhattisgarh

Muneeta Aneja, through “Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries” has without a doubt crafted one the best books that I have read on one of India’s most mysterious states. A celebrated communication specialist and a leading journalist, she brings a rather distinct perspective to Chhattisgarh uncovering layers of its history, culture, people, and its political and social fabric.

Despite its raw and unprecedented beauty, Chhattisgarh is largely remembered for being known as part of Red Corridor due to Naxalism. Muneeta isn’t afraid to tackle these hard-truths and provides a nuanced look at the background of Naxalite activity in the state. In doing so, she enables us gain an insight into these socio-political dynamics that have defined Chhattisgarh’s identity.

The book showcases the paradox that is Chhattisgarh, where history and the present collapse into each other with equal ease. The state has witnessed the clash of empires and has found itself woven into the fabric of India’s culture, history, and religious influence. Her beautiful descriptions and photographs take us on a tour of the state’s ancient origins, exposing archaeological marvels that pre-date early civilization. She enlightens us on Chhattisgarh’s connection to the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, merging the state’s prehistory with its contemporary cultural and religious context.

She leaves us in awe of a state that is home to more than 80% biodiversity unique to the region and not found anywhere else in India.

The book itself is as beautifully crafted as the state it draws its inspiration from. This is a must read for anybody interested to uncover the mysterious aura that surrounds Chhattisgarh. No matter if you’re a history buff, an eager traveler or just curious about this enigmatic state, the book will make a lasting impression on you. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of the museum edition of this work of art.

This book is just wow! The author has done an amazing job of highlighting all the aspects of why one should visit Chhattisgarh. Reading this book made me realize that we don't even know 1% of what Chhattisgarh has to offer. This book is so well researched and the author has so beautifully described about its present as well as its past; its connection to the two epics of Hinduism namely the Ramayana and the Mahabharata; the many tribes that it houses; the attacks that it has endure by the Naxalites and the Maoists; and even above all of these, its beauty and its mysteries. She has beautifully listed(along with beautiful pictures) the many temples, waterfalls, craftsmanship, and local delicacies. She has also interviewed the Royal Family and described so well the hardships that the position makes them endure; its not all the fairytale life we believe they live. This book is like a dictionary for Chhattisgarh - a one-stop book to get a complete detailed guide about it. I marvel author Muneeta Aneja's dedication and hard work that she must have put into writing this book. Hats off to the author! I feel that by this book, she has achieved her goal - to emphasize the underrated tourism hotspots. After reading this book, everyone would wish to pack their bags and go explore the beauty that Chhattisgarh is!

Book Review:
The Book " Chattisgarh : The Land of Hidden Mysteries" is the fruit of
Author,Muneeta Aneja's dedicated research, who had covered 80% of the state on her two wheeler and covered more than 125 tourist hotspots with the aim of attracting more tourists to this state and improve the economic lot of the underprivileged people of these parts. The book is easy to read and is studded with 170 + images to make the readers have a mental tour of those places.

The book starts with the Naxal menace that has raised its head in recent past and gave a vivid picture of ambush of a party of Congress leaders and workers in May 2013 while they were passing through Darbha Valley. This is one of the major operations of Naxals in this area where they killed about 28 people including the Congress stalwart Vidya Charan Shukla. This may be known by old timers who followed the events and news then but the author gives a starting fact of the Personal Security Officer of VC Shukla killed himself with the last bullet left regretting his inability to protect his Master. The section on Naxalites covers in detail the onset of Naxalism in the state, the favourable factors, the constraints, successes and struggles of the police. There is a brief mention of " Salwa Judum", a counter combat military force outside police control.
The book traces the historical importance of the region of Chattisgarh , back to Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. The region said to be called as Kosal, and later Dakshin Kosal had the distinction of mothering the mother of Lord Rama. The region contained Dandak forest where Rama with his brother and wife spent more than ten of his 14 year exile. The place is said to be the kingdom of Surpanakha's husband. It once served as the capital of Chedi kings on the banks of Suktimati river. ( Remember Vasu Charitra?) This part is later ruled by Kush, the son of Ram.
Then the author goes on giving the historical perspective, the lineage of kings that ruled...Chedis, Hyhayas, Kalachurs etc. And then there is a tribute paid to the great leaders of the region who sacrificed their lives in freedom struggle but scantily remembered now.
Then a major part of the book covers her travelogue with full information about the places... whether they are temples, durgas, or viharas of Buddha. She has produced her interviews with the present generation of royals.

Most of the pictures talk for themselves themselves , but the elaborate explanations will. Reveal those stories.
Overall, this is an excellent guide to people who want to know about Chattisgarh state( The state of 36 regions...Chattis in Hindi means 36.
Readers can appreciate the author's efforts to get the details and cull out a super interesting book useful for scholars and travellers.

The hugely intriguing and unique land of Chhattisgarh is described vividly by the author Muneeta Aneja in this book. Aptly titled Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries, she reveals what makes this state of India stand out—the widest waterfall, the first dam in Asia to have siphon spillways, and three out of the fifty-one Shakti peethas, among others.

One of the major attractions of the book is that it is enriched with art: pictures of ancient temples, tourist attractions, and modern amenities adorn its pages. What also makes the book worth delving into is the breadth of coverage that provides the reader with knowledge not only about the state’s ancient cultural heritage but also its current political backdrop. It touches everything from the Dandaka forests that find mention in the Ramayana to the Sirpur group of monuments (visited in the seventh century by the famous Chinese traveller Xuanzang), and from a 400-year-old dargah to the naxalite hotspots that people recognize from newspaper headlines. Of course, the author dives deeper than mere headlines.

The book is a treasure trove of legends and tales, and a favourite of mine is about Kaushalya, Lord Rama’s mother. The story goes that King Bhanumant, who ruled over Dakshin Kosala in what is present-day Chhattisgarh, was one of the invitees to Prince Dashrath’s coronation ceremony in Ayodhya (in the state of Uttar Pradesh). Now, the king also brought his daughter, Bhanumati, to the ceremony, and young Dashrath instantly fell in love with her when he saw the princess. The two were married and Bhanumati came to be known as Kaushalya (also spelled Kosalya, which denotes her ties to the kingdom of Kosala). The tales of temples built by the Kalchuris and those of Mahamaya and other Shakti peethas are equally enchanting.

What’s more, the author often highlights the diversity of various places in Chhattisgarh quite beautifully. Sample this passage about Upper Bastar or Kanker, for instance: “From tribes to teak trees, from kings to queens, from flea markets to the pristine waterfalls, from the cottage palaces to the mountain ranges, how can one possibly explain how picturesque and naturally scenic Kanker is!”

In short, the book Chhattisgarh: The Land of Hidden Mysteries takes you on a multi-layered journey into the variegated history, culture, natural beauty, and present-day attractions. It will stay with you for long, and prod you to go visit the places you only read about.

Chhattisgarh, the land of hidden mysteries, is everything and beyond what you expect from the title. I can safely be called a mini encyclopedia, covering almost all cultural aspects of the state. I was constantly wondering throughout the read about the effort it’d have taken Ms. Muneeta to come up with such a well and in-depth researched, yet an interesting read.
Getting into the specifics, I’d love to start with the unboxing. The book is beautifully printed on colorful glossy pages, the amusing pictures complementing the text brilliantly. I was lucky to get a signed copy along with hand-written notes and hand-made bookmarks from Muneeta, which is brag-worthy for its aesthetic sense. The blurb gives away some amusing facts about the state, but it’s just the tip of an iceberg.
The book is divided into 40 parts, with each part either touching upon a specific cultural aspect, such as pre-historic roots, tourism, etc., or covering a region in the state, such as Bilaspur, Sarguja, etc. Hailing from the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh, and carrying a keen interest in geolocations, I’d heard and read about many of these topics briefly, but reading this book made me realize how superficial my understanding was. Muneeta has poured her heart and soul into creating this book a ready reckoner for anyone who wants to know anything about the state.
And just when you start thinking that the book covers cultural aspects to the core, you start noticing the historical and economic aspects of the state. Even the issues like naxalism and red belt, as well as religious beliefs and connections with Ramayana and Mahabharata have been fairly well covered in the book. A journey into the book makes you realise that the state has something for everyone, and Muneeta’s writing does complete justice to the subject. And not to forget the amazing collection of pictures to substantiate the paragraphs.
Throughout the read, I was constantly swaying between the feelings of “I want to visit this place” and “It feels I’m already in Chhattisgarh”, the book is so well written. Highly recommended to everyone, not just readers, since this has so much to offer. And if you’re ordering, I’d recommend going for the bookmarks too, you won’t regret.
