From the author of the bestselling Psychic Surveys and Reach for the Dead series comes a Christmas Ghost Story like no other!
Is anyone ever who they seem?
After suffering the tragic loss of her best friend, Lottie Beck is struggling. Aged eighteen, she's flunked school and spends her days lying in a darkened room, doing nothing. Finally, she is forced to get a job at Silver Birches Care Home.
Once there, and after meeting the residents, particularly the feisty, no-nonsense Bobby, she settles in, appreciating how much history lies behind each person. A history she can read, in her own special way, via the touch of a hand.
Alice is another resident, aged ninety-two, and mute. A woman who has always been institutionalised and is now near the end of days. It is she who intrigues Lottie the most, but whom she also fears. All she knows is something happened to make her the way she is, an event on Christmas Eve, way back, something truly terrible.
Surely, she deserves peace, but if together they aren't brave enough to confront what lurks in the darkest recesses of her mind, she'll die in anguish.
It's Christmas Eve again, 2023, and as Lottie is about to find out: not all ghosts are dead.

A troubled young woman, finding it difficult to make friends and find a useful purpose in life, takes a menial job in a local care home for the elderly. She also has a secret, a very special psychic gift - that of an empath. The care home is rather run down and shabby, the clientele receiving the bare minimum of care from uninterested and generally uncaring staff. Here she comes across Alice, a catatonic resident who has spent nearly all her life in grim psychiatric institutions. Determined to discover the truth about Alice's life history she makes use of her psychic abilities and uncovers a story of sadness, abuse and sheer terror. This is a desperately sad tale, especially so at Christmas, but it is also one of courage overcoming adversity. I found it a hard story to read, with its depressing plot line, but keep going as it's worth it in the end.
Here is, indeed, a ’Ghost Story For Christmas’ (Eve) - Alice: A Christmas Ghost Story 👻
The quote; - ”"Cause I want to hear every single detail of Alice's story, that's why. So, as I've said, start at the beginning, right at the beginning. Leave nothing out, certainly no gory details. On Christmas Eve, the stranger the ghost story, the better."” - feels rather apt. I started reading this ghost story on Christmas Eve, but only finished it tonight because of the busy festive season. I am certain it could be read much quicker.
It is Christmas Eve, 2023, and Lottie is about to find out that not all ghosts are dead. This is a different kind of ghost story, which poses the question; Is anyone ever who they seem? Lottie Beck has been struggling since the tragic loss of her best friend. She’s eighteen, and has dropped out of education and spends her days lying in a darkened room, doing nothing. That is until she is forced to get a job in a care home. It doesn’t take long for her to settle in, and use the special psychic gift that she possesses. She can find out the history of a person’s life just by the touch of a hand. Two residents that Lottie grows fond of are Bobby and Alice. But Alice most definitely intrigues her the most. Alice has spent most of her life in institutions, she is catatonic, she had received a lobotomy. Lottie knows that terrible things must have happened to Alice in her past, and she wants to make use of her powers to find out Alice’s life story. If they don’t confront the darkness in the recess’s of Alice’s mind, she will die in anguish.
Not exactly a joyous Christmas tale all-round, but Lottie’s empathic gift is a very heartwarming thing amongst the darkness.
Disappointing, not really up to usual standard. Felt a bit half hearted, more as if a book ‘had’ to be produced. Usual the spooky books are better. Sorry Shani, I am an avid fan, but this one doesn’t do it for me. I was waiting for it , but felt a bit let down.
I don't know why this didn't do it for me, but it didn't; it felt like a slog to get through. It also isn't the creepy Christmas ghost story I was quite hoping for.
Nevertheless, I still thought it might be a three star read, as the writing isn't bad, it just felt too long and the story a little weak. But unfortunately, the ending cemented it as a two star read for me. It just....wasn't convincing in the slightest.
Following the tragic loss of her best friend, Lottie Beck struggles to recover, but finally goes to work at Silver Birches Care Home after her mum's ultimatum of "get a job or else". The residents at the home are fine although her fellow carers leave a lot to be desired. Lottie fast becomes friends with Bobby, an elderly woman who still has a spark of mischief, & she confides in Bobby that she can 'read' people or get a sense of their life just from touching their hand.
Bobby tells Lottie about Alice, a ninety-two year old resident of the care home who has been in asylums & homes all her life & is catatonic except for one day a year. Every Christmas Eve, Alice becomes agitated shouting about a 'wish'. When Lottie is sent to care for Alice one evening, she glimpses something that suggests that Alice is still there & that she has endured something terrible. Can Lottie find out what Alice is trying to tell her?
This was a big surprise in a good way - I wasn't expecting it to affect me quite so much. There's such a lot of pathos in the tale as, although the plot* has a rather fantastical ending, it's true that women were put away into asylums for trivial reasons. It is also true that they were sometimes subjected to experimental 'treatments' & their situations were open to all kinds of abuse.
It's not primarily a ghost story as there's not really much mention of ghosts (alive or dead!) or hauntings until the near the end, but it is rather unsettling as the story progresses & I was absolutely hooked to find out what had happened to Alice all those years ago. There are some contrivances in the storyline such as the cab driver who agrees to drive Lottie all the way from Sunderland to London on Christmas Eve in the midst of a snowstorm (!) but overall, it's a book I'm glad I picked up & I think it's one that will stay with me for quite a while.
*The plot makes great use of a lesser-known urban legend
Shani really knocked it out of the park with this one, definitely one of her best books!
Lottie Beck has a gift, she can see your life when she holds your hand, whether it’s happy memories, sad or troubled Lottie will see, a gift that’s not always a blessing and a gift her mum really doesn’t approve of. When Lotties best friend died she spiralled into depression, after a while to get lottie out of the house her mum gets her a job at silver birches care home where Lottie tries her best to please the owner Patsy and do her best to look after the residents. Bobby, one of the elderly clients is a bubbly no nonsense lady, a resident yes but one doesn’t like to associate with the elderly! Bobby and Lottie become good friends and as such Bobby talks to Lottie about Alice, the resident who lives in the room opposite Bobby, and Bobby is worried about Alice, sensing something very wrong and as much as Lottie wants to help, Alice is catatonic and not in her care. Can Lottie find a way to help Alice? Will her gift aid her in digging into Alice’s subconscious? How far will the rabbit hole drag Lottie down?
This book is brutally hard hitting and you’ll have tears in your eyes more than once, I don’t think I’ll forget about Lottie, Bobby and Alice for a long time. Highly recommend
This story brought the perfect blend of cozy Christmas vibes and emotional, ghostly mystery. It starts as a tale about grief and feeling lost, but slowly builds into something powerful — about memory, justice, and the courage to help someone who can’t fight for themselves.
I really connected with Lottie and her journey. She has a gift she’s afraid of, and watching her learn to trust it — and herself — gave the story real heart. It explores trauma without being too heavy, and ends with hope, purpose, and peace. The atmosphere is wonderfully eerie without ever being gory or terrifying.
It’s a touching reminder that love, kindness, and chosen family can rewrite even the darkest stories.
One-Word Summary: Uplifting

Silver Birches care home, not the job 18yr old Lottie wanted but her Mum knows the owner and insists she needs to work. She befriends a resident, Bobby, a gregarious woman and between them they attempt to help Alice, catatonic in the room opposite. Lottie has a gift and can help Alice find her way out of the darkness of her memories before it’s too late.
Ghost stories are a Christmas tradition and Shani delivers a cracking one every year. This is a story told in two timelines, Lottie starting work in the care home and Lottie a year later desperately travelling back to see Alice on Christmas Eve, in a taxi, in a storm, 6hrs away. She must hold Alice’s hand and tell her what she knows before she moves into the light.
As Lottie tells her story to the taxi driver braving the weather to get her to the care home, long buried horrors and a lifetime of abuse are revealed.
Lottie is also haunted by grief and guilt and maybe if she can make it to Alice in time she can put her own ghosts to bed too. A haunting story for the winter season, loved it!
I so look forward to my Christmas ghost story from Shani and this did not disappoint. I used to work in nursing homes and I recognised the characters she created. Lottie was a true heroine and my heart broke for her from start to finish. Oh and Alice poor sweet Alice. I deliberately waited until Christmas eve to read this year's book and I finished it after my Nightshift on Christmas day, got to admit I finished it with tears in my eyes. Shani's characters are always so well rounded and "real", you can't help but to feel what they feel. Thank you for giving me the book I needed this Christmas
I really enjoyed this story! I enjoyed the characters a lot, from Lottie and Tony, and especially spunky Bobby. There were a few times it dragged on, but the whole premise of the story was really good. I found myself not being able to put it down and wanting to keep reading to see what happened. Since it kept switching back and forth from past to present, there were a few times I felt like I got lost in that, but eventually figured it out. What a long, and sad life poor Alice had to endure for nothing. I can't imagine living that way. But so glad it was a happy ending.
This book is really a beautiful book. It's not horror really it's more mystery/paranormal. It really gets the emotions. The young woman in it is so relatable and she has had to deal with loss and her gift to be able touch a person and see their past. Shani does excellent character build up and she makes you really care for them. It was a lovely story about dealing with grief and becoming older and that in life we all do good but are capable being bad but when are time is up let's hope we are forgiven for those mistakes. I love Shani Struthers books including The Psychic Survey series. I highly recommend Alice and it definitely is a Christmas Story 🎄 ☺️
Alice is a fabulous story. Shani Struthers writes so well, her stories take you with them, into the centre of it all. Lottie starts working in a care home and one of her patients is Alice. There are great characters in here, Bobby is fab as is Tony. But Lottie would do great in more stories as she grows and becomes herself. Really enjoyed this, set at Christmas but an all year round good paranormal based story.
It's been a while since I've read a Shani Struthers book and it's a shame I've left it so long. I remembered how much I loved their creepiness and imaginative twists. This ghost story is different to others I have read, the ghost is alive and a resident in a nursing home. It's clever, captivating and heartbreaking.
Gifted storytelling. A Christmas ghost story at it's very best. So much of this story resonated on a personal level. It had everything, tragedy, emotion, love, ghosts, festivity, atmosphere and a brilliant story that left me turning the page into the early hours. And the ending... I cried.
What a fantastic read. It's been a while since I've read a book by Shani Struthers, and this book did not disappoint. Great characters, Lottie Beck and Tony the taxi driver. I won't say anymore about the story as I don't want to give anything away. 10/10 from me.
This was so fantastic and many parts so heartbreaking
There're parts in this storyline that are true as far as the way nursing homes and such are run. There are places that have people like Patsy. Most of this is very heartbreaking, but the ending was beautiful! I enjoyed this very much, but did shed some tears.
I have read many of Shani Struther's books! But this is the ONE which touched my heart and soul the deepest of all! Have just finished, it is 11.54 pm and wiping tears! Such a lovely ending !
Thank you, Shani, for writing such a lovely story about Alice! ❤🤗😊
Another respectfully and emotionally charged novel from Shani Struthers. As I've said in my previous reviews, I had a bit of catching up to do with her writing and purposely left her Christmas novels to this time of year. I'm really not a fan of this period, so I have struggled to really connect with them, however, her thought provoking and emotional writing really does shine through in Alice.
The cover said 'A Christmas ghost story' so I thought Dickensian, but no, this was horror (not too heavy) in a care home of all places. It's not a bad story but so not what I want to read at the moment! Obviously I'm not out of the woods yet.
Throughly enjoyed this story, so well written I was so invested in Alice's story I couldn't put it down. It's one of those books you can't wait to find out what happens but are sad it's over. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed this, likeable characters, interesting story,,though a bit sad in places. About a young lady who works in a care home and can "read" people's lives, just by touching them.
The book was a little rambling but getting into it a true story of hope and love. A journey by the central character describing struggles with acceptance and accepting a gift. The ending an uplifting of hope and knowledge. An unusual book but an excellent read.
The story is so enveloping just had to keep reading. It’s such an original setting that I’ll never think about care homes in the same way ever again. Brilliant characters each with their own stories.
I loved reading this. I fell in love with so many characters. I want the story to go on. I want Jenny and Tony to be a couple. I want to know that Lottie went on to use her gift with others. Even with the horrors that Alice endured, the story is beautifully told.
