His voice is smoke infused whiskey wrapped in sin. I’m broke as hell. He’s rich as the devil. I’m a blushing innocent with my v-card intact. He may as well have written the 'Karma Sutra' for how much experience he has in the bedroom. I’m in college. He’s on his way to being this decade's hottest rockstar. I’m nearly homeless, working two jobs just to keep the roof over my head and the ramen in my belly. He proposes a deal I can’t resist. He’ll cover my cost of living—this will let me ditch one of my jobs while significantly cutting my hours at the second. I’ll have time to study, and better yet, sleep. The only thing is, I have to act as his doting girlfriend. I have to let the biggest player I’ve ever spoken to—play with me. In front of others and alone. I have to let him touch and kiss me. And I have to do it all while keeping my heart firmly out of the mix. Because this isn’t a love song. But it’s starting to feel like one. Devil In The Details is book one in the Devils Heartbreak Trilogy.
Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, Alannah Carbonneau is only a short drive away from the Rocky Mountains that have a staring place in so many of her novels. With seventeen novels and counting currently available on Amazon, Alannah is not only a full-time author, but a full-time mom of two beautiful boys, and wife to an amazing man who always has her back. She lives in a rambling ranch house that needs way too many renos and has one too many cats, but she is happy and in love.
With a solid circle of friends and family, and a very manly, supportive husband who does his best to make sure his family is taken care of, Alannah’s novels feature manly men (sometimes they can be a LOT manly) and friend/family relationships weaved into the stories, because life is about a whole mess of people, and although this is fiction, the best fiction is sprinkled with sweet (and sometimes not so sweet) bits of reality.
Because she loves romance, Alannah writes Contemporary and New Adult Romance. Soon to be released is the Creekwood Valley Series that has ties to the reader beloved Donnelley Brother Series, where light suspense and romance weave to create titillating stories that not only steal your heart but keep you on the edge of your seat. She is the author of the highly rated Teach Me Series, an emotional read about love, life and lessons learned. Our Dark Design is a standalone erotic romance peppered with enough suspense to keep you turning the pages, and The Choice is an entirely unconventional standalone romance about three.
She is currently working on a Cross World Fantasy Romance Series for Adults she can’t wait to share with you, because this will feature hot men who are a little bit dominant and a lot protective who are head over heels in love with stubborn, magnificent women.
When Alannah isn’t writing or spending time with her three men, she can be found in her garden, or with a paint brush in hand. But no matter where she is or what she’s doing, you can bet that she’s thinking of a love story she can share with you.
I knew going into this that this would be a virgin heroine agreeing to fake date a rockstar, but I didn't know anything else about it. I knew that either I was going to like it or not. The last rockstar romance book I read had a rough beginning, so I didn't know what to expect & I hoped that this would be better. This was AMAZING.
I loved how when Cash proposed to Wrenlee that she be his fake girlfriend so she could have her rent and expenses covered and so that he could get a crazy ex-girlfriend and fans off his back, he was like oh, she's not even my type. He even gave her good reasons why they needed to practice kissing. And then later, he confessed to himself oh, you know, I was obsessed with her all along (which made sense by how much he was staring at her), and she is actually my type, lol. I LOVED how possessive and sexy he was. Cash was the I've-never-been-possessive-before-you type.
I almost felt like Wrenlee didn't deserve him...not that she didn't deserve him, but I didn't 100% see what he saw in her to make him fall head over heels besides she was hot and sweet, and they had great sexual chemistry. (But I feel this way about a lot of romance heroines. I think if I were a guy reading romance, I might feel the same way? IDK, actually probably not. I think because most romance novelists are females they idealize the man and make him virtually perfect.) She was portrayed as very cute (like personality-wise, not just looks) by him. Wrenlee is/was (I never know what the correct tense when reviewing a book) shy, innocent, naive, introverted, sweet, and kind. She gave me major Venus in Pisces vibes, but was definitely not a Capricorn Sun like me. Cash is a little bit of her opposite: he's intense, determined, obsessive, hard-working, ambitious, and ruthless.
The main thing that stopped this book from being 5 stars for me were that the references to romance heroes, romance books, and TikTok pulled me out of the story. Here's a quote: "He kisses like the men in my romance books." I get how this is a romance novel; it would be one thing for a girl to say this in real life, but don't pretend this isn't a novel. I know it's trying to simulate real life, but it just doesn't work for me & annoys me.
Another one: “Male main character.” I give him the ‘how don’t you know that’ scowl. “Don’t you read?” “No.” “You should. It’s fun.” “Girls gush over fake dudes in books?” “Totally.” I loose a happy little moan. “You have no idea. Guys in books are delicious.”
--when he's a delicious guy in a book I also thought it was funny how she was surprised when he licked her juices off his finger when that's done in romance books all the time. That's the problem with trying to make an innocent heroine who reads romance novels. I can tell you from personal experience that unless she's reading clean novels, she's going to know all about sexual things like that even if she has zero experience of doing them.
{Too many authors have been doing this lately. Jade West in The Man Upstairs, I see you.}
And the last thing that made me not give this book 5 stars, though it was so close, was that Wrenlee was a little too stupid to live (I finally get that expression for romance heroines). I get that she's like Snow White (this allusion came to me just now), taking the poisoned apple from the Evil Queen, believing the best in people, but she literally
The first few fingering scenes were so hot, ironically, better than the first sex scene, which was over too soon. This book is probably 2.5-3 stars on the spicy scale. I loved that outdoor patio scene where he makes her bleed.
The climax was excellent. Just when I started thinking okay, what about the conflict, it came back with a vengeance. I don't think I've ever read a scene like that; obviously, I don't want to spoil anything, so you'll have to read that one for yourself.
Also, when they said their "I love you's" and there was about 30% of the book left, I knew something bad was going to happen.
Other thoughts: Wrenlee is a unique name, though Cash is pretty standard for a rockstar. I thought it was relatable that Wrenlee ate everything but salmon just like me. (Though I'm not a fish girl in general.)
I wrote in my Kindle notes, "I love how possessive he's become after initially being like she isn't for me."
I felt seen when Wrenlee was the same bra size as me, a DD. (She's a 32 DD because she's lost weight; I'm a 34DD or 36D. Lol, these reviews are mainly for me, but it's hilarious I'm sharing my bra size on a Goodreads review.) I remember as a little girl, I thought that was huge, but I don't think my boobs are huge. I think they're the perfect size for my frame.
The whole thing with a friend's mom saying to beware of men who give you butterflies was very strange. If a man doesn't give you butterflies and you just feel safe around him but no excitement, he's not the right guy for you. He's probably better off as a friend, lol.
There were a few too many descriptions of this at the beginning for me to describe Cash: “You taste like whiskey and sin and cinnamon hearts.” I like poetical language but only to a certain extent.
“You just hang with a narrow crowd. Girls like me are a dime a dozen. Just walk into a bookstore.” -this reference was funny, though. I loved it, and I liked how the author was aware that Wrenlee wasn't anybody special (if I am understanding correctly?). I believe that everyone, unless they're an awful person, deserves love.
I get why L.A. would be a better place for a musician to live, but the publishing market (Wrenlee wants to be an editor) is really in New York. Personally, I would never trade NY for L.A., though I was forced to do that when I was ten. I appreciated the show not tell in the epilogue.
Loved the cats, though I didn't get the joke about the name Nemosis. Unless it was "Nemo + "nemesis" combined. I wasn't surprised then that the author is a big cat lover.
There were also a lot of great quotes and scenes in this book. I added one of the quotes to Goodreads; I think I had forgotten about that feature or stopped adding quotes because I didn't want just anything on my profile.
Thank you SO much to the author & BookSirens for the ARC. In no way has this affected my honest review/rating. I enjoyed this book a lot, and I'm so glad I decided to break my rule of "no more ARCs". LOL
2.5 stars - this had soooo much potential. Gawd I love a good Cinderella trope. And this had tons of good ideas - readable writing style. Characters that I liked. I just really struggled with the timing/pacing and the lack of substance. Way too much way too soon. There was a lot of telling but very little showing. There were some great lines and scenes, but unfortunately they happened at weird times and the author hadn’t built the story to meet the characters where they were at in the scene. So I was left confused quite a bit. The intimacy pacing was off, and didn’t make sense for the characters or the plot, the emotions didn’t make sense in context of what had been written, the “obsession” was head-scratching. There were some swoony lines but that’s all they were, “lines”. They didn’t go anywhere or really make much sense for what had happened in the story so far, nor did they lead anywhere satisfactory. It felt like she was trying to dabble in making this a darker book?? But she wasnt successful in that. Every time I thought we might get a little bit of edginess/darkness, it didn’t go anywhere. We just get a good line that held teased but never came to fruition.
The side characters were vague with nothing distinguishing to hold on to and their various facts kept morphing. Like, for example… who are his parents??? Celebrities of some kind? Doctors? Mafiosos??? I’m confused.
Also… the heroine has watched this rock star take groupies home every night for MONTHS. She is grossed out by the hero at the beginning of the book… but for some reason 2 days later she’s letting him touch her intimately… and not long after that they have unprotected sex. Not one mention or thought to safety - not STDs or pregnancy. Not even a passing concern. She’s still in college. What college girl (a virgin who has hardly even been kissed) is just screwing around without a care at all about pregnancy at the very least? Not even a little mention of taking her birth control. NOTHING. He never even thinks “I never go bare” or whatever. Not a single mention to put the reader a little at ease. It’s weird considering how the book starts.
And this one of the MANY examples of the lack of substance and inconsistent characters. There’s a lot interesting plot points that just aren’t fleshed out to provide some satisfaction. There were odd word choices that might have made more sense for a middle aged woman rather than a college aged girl.
The thing is I did like quite a bit about this book. Which is why I marked it 3 stars. I saw in a review, that also mentioned the rushed plot and instalove, that they liked her hockey book better, so I do think I’ll give that a try, just in case. It’s hard to find a contemporary author who I find readable these days.
I was initially planning to leave a review about too much spice and not enough plot…. But then the ending hit! That was not the direction i was expecting this story to go!
I did not think I was going to like this, but I loved it! It was sweet, very spicy in some areas, and had a great story to tell. While Im not the biggest fan of virgin FMC with experienced MMC, it was done and written so well. Im so excited for Kane's story. His one POV wasnt enough. There's something there. Something dark and dangerous but also broken. I will give mad props to the other and how she wrote this book. From start to finish, it was addictive. I didnt want to put it down to do real life!!
How many times can someone taste like, smell like or be wrapped in sin? Lol I felt like this book was a bit repetitive and corny for how high the ratings were. But still not terrible. A low 4 star i feel like. This one had fake dating, rockstar romance, and forced proximity. Not bad concepts. I dont know if ill continue the series.
DEVIL IN THE DETAILS is the first book I read by this author. I really enjoyed the story although I’m not a big fan of the rockstar romance in general. What made it so good was the mystery and suspense and the tough guy rockstar falls first romance.
What also makes this a good book is the introduction to the other guys in the band in the anticipation of their stories. They are a close group with distinctive personalities that made them memorable.
This book has some plot twistsI thought I had all figured out. It was refreshing to read a book that stretched thinking, and wasn’t all that easy to figure out. Good story.

I do love a Good Rockstar Romance, and this story brought me much reading delight! Wren and Cash make a great couple, and the fact that he was in it for real, just made the story even better. The story held a great pace, with characters that I cared about. Fantastic Read! I Loved It!!! No spoilers!
Honestly, I had HIGH hopes for this book. I really did. I really loved Pulling the Goalie, but this book didn't hit like that one did.
Everything felt rushed. I didn't really feel close to the characters. The relationship between Wrenlee and Cash was rushed. I felt like they were instantly together, but there was no foundation built between them. I don't know. To me, I just didn't fall in love with them like I did with the characters in Pulling the Goalie.
It was a good book; it just wasn't great. I sat on the edge of my seat the entire time and just didn't get satiated like I wanted to.

The lead singer for Devils Heartbreak, Cash Jagger is used to women throwing themselves at him, but some are obsessive. Wrenlee is a waitress at one of the bars the band plays at, and when Cash realises she is short of money, he makes her an offer: pretend to be his girlfriend and he will provide her with a place to stay. I have not read anything by Carbonneau before, but I loved this. The sweet and innocent Wrenlee and the hot and handsome Cash make an odd couple, but the author shows the attraction and writes convincingly of their developing relationship. Throw in illness and peril, and you have a terrific story.
This book was a fun spicy read. Once I started reading the story had me wanting to know what would happen next. Definitely an unexpected twisted turn of events at the end. Which was a pleasant surprise. I thought I could predict the ending and when I couldn’t I was very impressed. I throughly enjoyed the reading experience. This book had you want more from the very start until the very end. If you enjoy spicy, this book is nice and spicy!
Wow! This story is amazing! A rockstar, a plan in place to rid himself of a clingy stalker, a college student struggling financially, and more twists and turns than you could ever imagine. Fantastic characters and brilliant storytelling. There’s a much deserved HEA, but, boy, a hell of a ride to get there. This author is incredible and if I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would!
Wow, this was really great book! I went into it with zero expectations, and even thinking this is a cute little book. But, holy hell last 20% were some serious true crime moments from the victim perspective. If you have a claustrophobia, this will be some next level shit reading it 😅
It was definitely breath of fresh air in sea of same old plots.
I absolutely loved how introverted h was, how she was shy and blushing, but also could snap if provoked enough. Absolutely, loved her character!
"You like jerks?" "In books, they're hard to resist. In real life, no."
Girl, same..
Cash was awesome! He was scheming, he had a plan but dang love hit him in the head like a truck and he really tried to fight against it-ish. Well, He thought he tried, but it was lost cause! He was possessive and when everything backfired for himself, he schemed another plan to make her his forever.
🔸 virgin h 🔸 shy and introverted h 🔸 manwhore H 🔸 size difference 🔸 curvy h 🔸 no om/ow drama 🔸 no cheating 🔸 fake dating 🔸 It’s a bit insta-ish love 🔸 H had a stalker (ow mentally unstable sister) 🔸 h is financially broke 🔸 H is on a way to stardom with his rock band 🔸 no talk of safe sex, no mention of bc or condoms 🔸 no separation 🔸 slow burn but when it comes, it’s spicy 🌶️ 🥵 🔸 triggers: if you are claustrophobic, there is a detailed scene of being buried alive 💀 🔸 HEA with an Epilogue

This book has two things I normally completely steer clear of… young FMCs and virgins. If it wasn’t for reading ARCs to give feedback I would have passed on it.
But I love a good rockstar romance and I was hoping to maybe be proven wrong.
She’s very innocent as predicted and I think what her boss says is super true “you moved to one of the most cut-throat cities in America and this is just business”.
I like that the band has one member already in a relationship because that never seems to happen in interconnected standalone like this! But I do wish we got more time with the other members besides Candace because I can’t say I’m super invested in their potential stories. I still will probably read them to see how things grow. The lack of info makes me more interested in learning about them so maybe that is the point.
If I was a reader who didn’t mind young FMCs or virgins I probably would have liked this way more. That being said, I DID really enjoy it!
3.5 stars rounded up because I know if I wasn’t so annoying about FMCs I would have rated it higher lol
This was such a hot and very interesting book. It kept me entertained the whole way through. I was on edge through the whole thing as well. Wrenlee is a young college student who is pretty much broke and trying her best to stay afloat. Cash is a member of the Devils Heartbreak rock band. All the women and girls want him and do whatever they can to get his attention. All the while his attention is taken up by tiny and unnoticed Wren. These two were absolutely fire together. I loved how Cash changed for Wren without her knowing. I also loved how he was very protective over her. She was so innocent but unbeknownst to her, she stirred a hot fire in Cash. Their relationship started off as her being his fake girlfriend but then it quickly changed to real. Wren was still in denial for a while but for Cash it was real the whole time. I loved that this story was fast paced and they didn’t have all the extra back and forth stuff going on between them.
I received an Arc copy and I’m voluntarily leaving my review.
boring and no real plot. just another insta lust where the author doesn’t do anything to show why the characters love each other.
and the emphasis on her being a virgin and “innocent”and her not knowing anything sexual was a massive ick. there’s innocent and then there’s this. she didn’t even know how you can break your hymen. she didn’t know if giving head and being fingered meant she was still a virgin. mind you she’s in college!!! i get this is a cliche unrealistic book but can we be a bit serious lmfaooo
the fmc also reads booktok books and literally calls mmcs “mmcs” out loud. could not stop cringing
this just dragged so much and was repetitive with no plot. literally nothing happened. we saw like nothing of the band or him performing. the author wanted to write a rockstar romance for the aesthetic but realised she had to also write a plot so added in random shit throughout that didn’t add anything to the “story”.
i typically don't like the fake relationship tropes because it gets dragged on to long in the storyline. This was no different. The h is an idiot and got annoying when she kept bringing up that it was "fake" even though it was obviously not. I kept thinking all the H had to do was say it wasn't fake. Like bro what are you waiting for?
Then this took a really dark turn with the stalker and the scenes were very disturbing and had me ugly crying. I was not prepared.
The book had some good parts but overall I was disappointed.
A really unique Rockstar story with characters that kept me invested in the story and the relationship between the MCs! I like that this is a completely different story from the first but connects to this series, perfectly. I find this story easy to relate to, and enjoyed it to the last page. I Loved It!!! No Spoilers! No Blurb Repeats!
I received an ARC and I am Leaving this Totally Honest Review because I choose to and Loved the Story!!!
This had the right amount of rough and gritty without sacrificing the heat and romance. Throw in a psychopath murderous ex and it was quite the ride. I loved the aggressive, broody, determined main male character. He knew what he wanted and went after it relentlessly. And the main female character was so sweet and innocent and loveable. She was easy to root for. I'm looking forward to future books about other band members, hopefully.
I love this book. The he falls first trope is my favorite and Cash definitely falls first. It's a pretend relationship romance; Cash asking Wrenlee to be his pretend live-in girlfriend to keep the fans at bay.
I love that there's no third act breakup (which is usually a sign of couples that can't communicate properly.) I love how sweet Cash is to Wrenlee and how he takes such good care of her.
I was actually drawn into find the second book, which I didn’t know it was a series. So when I found out if was, I always start from the beginning. Whiskey, sin and cinnamon hearts just make you think of the dark desire devil of Cash, like you can feel and hear it in his lyrics. The innocence but self awareness of Wrenlee that shows how she’s draws him in. Great story looking forward to forward to the next book.
Scintillating! A raw rockstar read with a wee bit of thrill. This hit all the best spots.
Wrenlee is not quite my kinda FMC but I could tolerate her for the sake of the story. Cash is the intense quintessential bad boy we all need. He might be a bit too stalkerish for my liking though, I do like intense but Cash is a little too much for me. I wouldn't like him in the real world , he is perfect in the book though.
First time read from this author. I really enjoyed the book. The story was believable, fast- paced, with a nice twist in the storyline and the characters had great chemistry. Recommended and going to read the next book in this series. The reason I didn't give 5 stars was dubbed a rockstar romance, but i felt the music took a backseat to everything else going on in the story.
This was my first read from this author. This story was perfect if you enjoy rockstar characters. It was a real slow burn between these two. You have a rockstar on one side and a virgin on another but it was a good read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I wanted to like this book SO bad. The concept is great, but it’s just falling a little flat for me personally.
I like the characters, but something about how he refers to her virginity and how small she is constantly really gives me the ick. It’s just not for me. I can see the talent coming from the writer though!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Typical fake girlfriend to a billionaire arrangement and the rest is history with this type of book. The writing is good and the story is good, I guess these types of books are what a lot of romance readers like. It’s not very likely to happen in real life, but it doesn’t hurt to pretend it could and lose yourself in the story for a while.
A diamond for sure. I am reading them in reverse order totally by accident but the story’s are so good that it does not matter. I do not know where this author has been hiding but I have found her and am so excited to read all of her stories that I can.
I like the characters and your storyline is different than I suspected. Some words misplaced that make it sound weird. Don't know when that happens but too bad its not fixed before it is on line.
Interesting take on the story. It had some slow spots but it kept me intrigued enough to finish. Now, even tho I wasn't going to at one point in book, I'm going to check out Kane's story.
