An ambitious mage. A warrior priest. A divine power… they would both rather her die than let her keep it. Nadiya has been told countless times her ambition to become the first no-name mage to hold a commander’s position amongst the Runai would get her killed. When the temple begins to collapse, her class is sent to evacuate everyone, but her determination to save lives and prove herself capable results in her and the High Priest’s apprentice, Lateo, being trapped inside.
Despite his evident disdain for her and all of the mages, he leads them to an underground vault to take shelter while they wait to be rescued. However, as the roof caves in, and Nadiya tries to catch a holy relic, the Heart of Asentai, power floods her veins.
When she wakes up, she’s become the Beata, a prophesied mythic figure with more magic than she could dream of. She’s sent away to be protected, but more importantly to protect everyone else from her and the power she can’t control. She’s now separated from the mages and stuck with the priest who hates her as her guard.
Nadiya is desperate to turn herself back into a no-name mage and return to the Runai, but is that even possible? And can she do it before someone kills her to steal a power she doesn’t even want?
For lovers of epic magic, complex characters, and intense, slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with no spice, Sacred Heart is a YA fantasy perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone, Elise Kova, and Sarah K. L. Wilson!
Celeste Baxendell has always read anything she could get her hands on, but once she read her first fantasy novel, she was hooked and hasn’t looked back since.
Her love of magic, adventure, and romance hasn’t waned with age, and she endeavors to write nail-biting stories with compelling, complex characters, and finding light in dark times.
She is incredibly blessed to spend her time writing from her favorite chair with her legs curled up under her as she fights the southern heat. When she isn’t writing, she’s either reading, drawing, or sewing, in that order, and most likely thinking about writing as she does.
Sacred Heart is an amazing YA fantasy with a fascinating magic system, vivid world-building, and a slow-burn forbidden romance.
The stakes are high as Nadiya and Lateo navigate their internal struggles and pasts, and the fantastic foreshadowing and backstory telling enhance the beautifully crafted plot. Told from Nadiya’s POV, Celeste masterfully shows without telling, allowing readers to experience the thoughts and feelings of other characters through their actions. While I was able to predict who the antagonist was early on in the book, it was still an emotional rollercoaster that had me squealing, tearing up, and cheering throughout.
Nadiya's ambition and determination makes her a relatable FMC, while Lateo’s compassionate nature provides the perfect opposite of her. Their journey is heartwarming and filled with witty banter, making it a delightful read. This clean romance includes flirting and kissing, with some fantasy violence and injuries, but nothing too graphic.
Thank you, BOMM & Celeste Baxendell, for the eARC. I will definitely be continuing this series!
This book is an absolutely epic YA fantasy. It has an amazingly fascinating magic system. Awesome world building. An epically slow burn forbidden romance. High stakes. Internal struggles for the two main characters about their past, who they are, and who they want to become. Amazingly beautiful world building (it just needs to be said twice.) Fantastic foreshadowing. Epic backstory telling. An amazingly awesome setting.
And I can't say anything at the plot because it is so beautiful when you discover it for yourself.
This book is in a single POV from Nadiya's perspective. Yet you don't miss out on ANYTHING because the author writes so magnificently that it's like you can see into the other characters heads through their actions. Masterful showing without telling. Ugh the writing was so beautiful 😍
Let me just say it had me squealing, tearing up, cheering, and so many more emotions. This book is a rollercoaster in THE BEST WAY.
If you're looking for your next roman empire read... Well this is it.
Nadiya and Lateo will capture your hearts, your mind, every waking second of your day. I'm going to need the next few months just to recover from this book before the next one releases.
It. Is. Epic.
💋This is a clean/no spice romance. Flirting and kissing are the only things in this book 🗡️Fantasy violence, injuries, explosions, some death but none of it graphically described ⚠️Both characters were practically orphans
Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given if you can't guess by the obsessive freaking out in my review 🤣
Once I got used to the names and terms of the beautiful world Celeste created in Sacred Heart, I fell in love with the characters, the story, and the action.
The relationship between Runai Nadiya (aka the Beata who used-to-be a no-name mage) and second to the High Priest, Lateo, is as complex and frustrating as it is witty, fun, and even hopeful. And oh, the tension here is quite effective. Their story left me with a thousand questions and a deep desire to read more of their story in the next book. Celeste's side characters were endearing (looking at you, Raeka), infuriating (oh, hey, Canace), and charming (hello, Your Highness, Prince Sulien).
Nadiya's struggles to find where she belongs and feel worth the belonging she receives is a struggle I think many people will be able to relate to. And isn't that the power of stories? To make us feel seen and understood, and even help us look around and see that hope and friendship can come from the most unexpected places? To help us see the adventure and grace in upended plans?
Sacred Heart is a fast-paced tale of bravery, becoming, and even belonging. With witty dialogue, we get to take that journey with characters who become like comrades in arms, fighting with us through the darkness that sometimes covers life.
I'm so grateful to have a chance to read this story early, and I can't wait for you to join me as we gush over the characters and toss out theories about what comes next for our fave new heroes.
A wonderful romantic fantasy! In a roman-inspired world where the population is separated into mages and non-mages, Nadiya is a no-name mage filled with ambition to climb the ranks and make her own name and future for herself. However, getting trapped in a collapsing temple with the high priest's second in command and encountering a sacred object that imbues her with unforseen power changes her path.
Sacred Heart was full of just that--heart. Nadiya feels so immensely. She has more ambition than I've ever had in my life, and has the passion to see it through. Lateo was the best foil for her--a caring, compassionate boy who helped her see differently than the narrow lens she had crafted for herself. I think their journey is going to be pretty epic along these five books. A great start to a series. 4.5 stars.
“Sacred Heart” the first book of the Rune Heart series is about a mage Nadiya who comes from a family of normal humans. She is raised and trained at he academy but unlike other mages she has limited magic, but her ambition is way stronger then them all combined. Trying to make her own path to become a commander; highest rank of a mage she faced severe resistance from other noble mages. During an attack on the temple her fate takes a drastic turn. Determined to save lives and prove herself worth, she ends up being trapped with the most unpleasant person; the High Priest’s apprentice, Lateo.
Despite his hate for the mages he provides her shelter in a vault full of sacred relics. Nadiya tried to protect one of the strongest relics, the Heart of Asentai, when the vault collapsed and all the power is transferred to her. And now she becomes the Beata. According to the prophesies she will be the start of a new era. But there comes the problem. She becomes too unstable to be with other mages.
In order to protect others and to protect Nadiya she is sent away to the temple to be kept with other holy relics. Sent away from her own people and living with priests she’s stuck with her priest bodyguard who hates her the most. And to her suspicion he is there to kill her. All she wants is to become a no name mage again, return to her people and have her normal life back.
Nadiya is not happy with this foreign power. But will she be able to get rid of it? Will she be able to achieve her goals when there is a great threat looming on her life and the ones precious to her?
Character Description:
Nadiya: Nadiya is a headstrong and decisive female lead you’ll fall in love. She is ambitious and will do anything to achieve her goals. I love her sarcastic thoughts. Her pride and dignity is the most important thing for her but she won’t leave the opportunity to learn and improve herself even if it is from her worst enemy. I understand her determination but it goes to a level of rigidness and the writer explained it so well. All she had gone through her life broke my heart. She reminds me of my favourite character Jude from Cruel Prince.
Lateo: A rude apprentice of the High priest. His character is a bit mysterious and reserved till the end. I still have so many questions about him. His faith in Nadiya and continuous support is so heart warming.
Overall the story was amazing and different. A slow burn, no spice YA fantasy perfect to pull you out of a reading slump. I loved Nadiya and Lateo bickering all the time. There are moments that will make you laugh, cry and scream with excitement. I admire the way the writer wrote the character descriptions. One of my favourite one was the entry of the high priest. Impressive. Character’s perspective were also amazingly written. I would love to have Lateo’s pov in the next book.
I didn't love this book at the beginning bc the FMC really annoyed me with her prejudice... but I gave it 4.5 stars for a reason, thus you have to read my review to find out why.
Content warnings:
Sexual content: A kiss, lots of hugging, and one outfit being considered revealing.
Language: N/A
Violence and gore: Some fighting, mentions of burns, death and basic description, and magic wounds.
Beginning with my desire to rate this 2 stars: Nadiya. She was kind of a hypocrite for the first 3/4 of the book. A bird is just a bird until its a Phoenix, wants power until its given to her, wants to be known for something until she is, and so on and so forth. HOWEVER (this is important, so don't stop reading), she redeemed herself. I was glad to see her start accepting her role, to see her admit where she was wrong or falling short, and to see her relationship change with someone she initially hated. It is one book, and I do expect more character growth from the next books, but she did grow on me.
Lateo had his fair share of prejudice too, mind you. I am not excusing him (entirely... He has cool swords and he's sarcastic... I can give him some grace. Don't judge me). He definitely fell first, but this guy sucks at talking about his feelings. I get it though... He has a lot of pressure on him.
Do I mention the prince? I just did, so I will continue. I didn't love him... Not until the last ten or so chapters. I am praying I'm not going go have a love triangle in the future and that the prince is just really good friends with Nadiya instead. Nonetheless, I liked his teasing nature and obvious concern for Nadiya and those she was close to later in the book.
Plot-wise, around 60% in I started suspecting a character and I was right in the end... It wasn't really a surprise to me. I did enjoy the storyline though. I wish I didn't have to work and read it in pieces though... I feel like it would have been more enjoyable to read in longer sessions.
I'm A sucker for Runes, so I LOVED this magic system!!! This would make a great movie series even if it was just using the runes and mage-killers. All aspects of that combination were intriguing to me.
If you're reading this for the romance, know its a slow burn series. I was good with that bc I'm kind of tired of reading romance lately and was happy to focus more on the plot, but if you are like some people (**cough** my sister **cough**) and can't read a book without a strong romantic subplot, I would say this is probably not your book.
Now, why did I rate this book highly? My honest answer is... the ending. I feel like it built up the desire for book 2 without ending on a cliffhanger SO WELL! We saw how the relationships between the characters were, we saw characters coming into their roles, we saw closer to the plot of this book, and we saw opening to the book after this one. I thought it was really well done, and I am excited to read book two ASAP!
Nadiya is a no-name mage with limited magic (vitae), but with great ambition: she's going to be the first of her kind to become a commander. When a fire arises at the temple her class at the Academy get sent there to help with the evacuation. Nadiya gets trapped with the High Priest's apprentice, Lateo, and when the roof starts caving in she saves a holy relic from falling to the floor. The relic is the Heart of Asentai, the holiest relic of them all, and when she grabs it its powers are transfered into Nadiya. All of a sudden she's got so much magic that she can't control it, and to protect her classmates she has to stay at the temple, under the protection of the High Priest and Lateo - who hates her.
I fell head over heels for the two main characters! Nadiya is so stubborn and ambitious that it almost kills her, but it doesn't stop her from her plans. You would think that she would be happy when she gets all this power - no problem becoming a commander now! - but no, instead she does everything she can to get rid of them! More than once I feel like shaking some sense into her, but at the same time I can understand her attitude. Lateo is practically Nadiya's opposite and it doesn't feel strange that they can hardly stand each other. Their banter is sometimes serious, sometimes jesting, but always fun to read!
"Your job isn't to protect me. Your job is to kill me." ~ When she opened her door to go to her room for bed, Lateo moving for his own, she threw over her shoulder, “Goodnight, priest-boy, hate you.” He snorted and looked over at her. “Goodnight, Runai, hate you more.”
The characters are complex and feel real. They’re far from perfect, they have flaws, just like anyone. The world building is inspired by the Roman Empire and I love it! I also love that it's a slow-burn, forbidden enemies-to-lovers (with no spice!) where he falls first! I was served a few surprises as well and I really look forward to continue this series!
* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *
-First reading the synopsis, I knew I was going to enjoy this book. It was a great and entertaining read, not hard to understand the world or the magic system but it wasn’t overly easier either which was great. The writing was easy to read and really gripping. The plot itself of the book was intriguing and it was definitely a page turner, I was really intreated in everything. -I really liked all of these characters. Nadiya kind of felt like a typical female protagonist but she had her qualities that made her differently special. Furthermore, her relationship with Lateo is to die for. I was kicking my feet and felt the butterflies when reading scenes between them. I kept wishing for them to get together although I secretly hoped they didn’t since this is supposed to be a 5 book series. Because of that, it felt like the enemies to lovers went by a bit too fats for my liking. -The ending was great and really makes me want to read the rest of series, so I will definitely try and get my hands on the next books once they are released. Although, I would say the only downside is that I kind of guessed one of the main reveals or plot twist. I would have preferred not having guessed it but then again, it still made things interesting.
Oh how I enjoyed this! Luckily book two is coming out in July, because I was expecting some kind of declaration. I really enjoyed the slow progress between Nadiya and Lateo! It was shaky at first but those of you who want a slow burn are in for a treat! It's so rare lately to find a book where the ship isn't already together more or less by book one. I'm excited to see where it goes.
More than anything, I loved Nadiya! Her ambition and resilience to stand up for what she's been fighting tooth and nail for all her life was so admirable! Girlie has some lofty goals and I'm rooting for her!
I loved this YA Fantasy! Nadiya was such a strong FMC. Gorgeous world-building. Populace separated into mage & non-mages. Such a phenomenal under dog story! Enjoyed this immensely!
This young adult fantasy romance is perfect for readers looking for a clean romance with some action and magic. I loved the world building and found myself wanting to learn so much more about all the other magic wielders. Nadiya is a very headstrong young woman who has worked hard her whole life to prove herself. After she accidentally receives the power of a holy relic and becomes the strongest mage alive she tries desperately to get rid of her new power. I really struggled to like her in the beginning and she eventually grew on me. There were moments when I was really starting to like her and then it would be whisked away by an action or comment made by her. For someone who wants to prove herself and claim ownership of her achievements she seems to want to blame everyone else for some of her actions. Her constant blaming Lateo for her having touched the relic and having this power grew tiresome after awhile and I was really hoping she would grow a bit more, but hopefully that will be in future books. For the most part she very clearly acted like a seventeen year old would.
Lateo was one of my favorite characters and I'm so curious to know what more of his backstory his and the secret he seems to be hiding. I often forgot he was also supposed to be seventeen and pictured him as nineteen-twenty. He is also very stubborn but I felt like he grew as a character more than Nadiya did. His internal conflicts were well written and I'm really excited to see where they lead in future books.
I would have never guessed who the "bad guy" was and was pleasantly surprised when they were revealed. The actions scenes are fantastically written and the romance between two teenagers was steamy enough for romance without being too much.
I can't wait for the next book and will be anxiously awaiting its arrival.
I would like to thank the author for allowing me to be one of the lucky recipients of this captivating ARC novel. Please remember that while I was sent this as an ARC from the author, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Review:
At first, I wasn’t enjoying Sacred Heart so much and this was because I feel like we got thrown into this universe with no explanation. Many of the fantasy terms and/or history were only explained much later in the story, which led to the first 50 pages of this book being read in confusion. However, I eventually got accustomed to all the fantastical aspects of this world. Sacred Heart wasn’t as action-packed and thrilling as I was expecting as it was slow-paced and the action scenes were quite short and quick. But it was truly the character dynamics and personalities that kept me hooked. Once we started to delve deeper into Nadiya’s background and her persona, I began to enjoy her so much. She is written so realistically and is so unapologetically authentic, something that was so refreshing to read. As for the romance between Lateo and Nadiya, it was very minimal in this book but I thought the little snippets we did get were very endearing. And while I did wish for a little more of a sneak peek into a romantic relationship between them, I am sure this will be developed in upcoming books. Another thing I enjoyed was the pacing of this story; every point in the book’s plot was well-developed and rarely rushed. Overall this YA novel presented a cast of lovable characters, easy-to-follow world-building and straightforward writing. I will definitely be looking out for the sequel!
Read this if you enjoy: Engaging character dynamics Characters with authentic personalities Slow-paced narratives with well-developed plot points Fantasy books with subtle romantic elements
Celeste has rocked it again! Sacred Heart was a thrilling Fantasy that kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. I was unsure who to trust throughout the story, feeling like I was Nadiya herself as I followed her through her journey. I laughed, smiled, squealed, and of course cried—SOBBED, actually!—until I ran out of tears. I experience all raw emotions, so in short words, this book was a rollarcoaster ride I loved so much!
I love how complicated all of Celeste's characters are. It makes me love them all so easily. Nadiya was a rare type of heroine and I adored her so much. Lateo was a great and swoony MMC—too swoony for a priest as fierce and annoying he can be sometimes, so much so I didn't know he was capable of it lol. I loved their chemistry and banter. Perfect. Oh. Goodness. That Kiss! It was a chef's kissssss! Lol
The side characters were amazing too, I couldn't avoid saying that. Some of them even felt too real to be true. Prince Sulien and Erasmus were my favourites!
Altogether, this fantasy was fantastic. I couldn't wait for the second book and the rest of the series!
PS: This is a personal opinion and is in NO way to paint the book in a bad light. I highly recommend this book! I just wished that the religious aspect in the story was something like in Narnia rather than Roman/Greek. It was a little difficult to read about a certain goddess being the creator of life. Maybe it's just me? Anyways, besides that, everything else was my cup of coffee and I LOVED IT!
I received an ARC from the author in exchange of my honest review. All the opinions are solely mine.
I absolutely loved the book! The world building was amazing and so was the banter between the main characters. There was never a boring moment and it was so easy to get dragged into the world. All the new names, places etc. were a little difficult to spell and remember at first but you quickly get used to it!
✨✨𝑀𝑦 𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠✨✨ Thank you so much to Celeste Baxendell & Book of Matches Media for my Advanced Reader Copy of 𝐒𝐀𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.
I just knew when I helped with the cover reveal for this book that it was going to be an absolutely amazing read, and WOW it delivered in every way I knew it would! Sacred Heart follows the story of our hero, Nadiya, as she grapples from going to a no-name mage, to one imbued with an ancient and great power that she wants nothing to do with. This book is filled with amazing characters, a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, lore, amazing and detailed world-building, and a plot that had me guessing the entire time I was reading!
I absolutely loved Nadiya. I loved how ambitious and determined she was, and she was so easy for me to connect to. She was determined to earn her way up the ranks and not be handed anything. Lateo was a perfect MMC, and together these two are just amazing. I haven’t read all of Celeste’s books, but I loved these characters so much. They each have so many amazing elements to them, but they also have flaws, and this is what I found was so easy for me to connect to. Flawed characters are more real to me, and I love how complex and multi-faceted Nadiya and Lateo are. The romance between them was perfectly written and the I couldn’t get enough of the pining and banter! I always love it when he falls first! While the romance was a big part of the story, the plot was also excellently delivered and balanced well with the romantic pieces.
I definitely enjoyed every part of this read and cannot wait for Book 2 in this series to come out! I can see some things happening (a love triangle perhaps?!) and I’m already trying to guess as to what’s going to happen next! This is definitely a trophy shelf kind of book and perfect for fantasy if YA fantasy romance!

What a brilliant and powerful beginning to what I’m certain will be one epically spellbinding series!
Nadiya is considered the lowest rank on the Command Track at the Academy. As a no name she has less physical magic than those of her peers that come from noble or clan families. However, she makes up for it with hard worker and determination. But with a strange fire, a handsome High Priest Apprentice, and a mysterious relic Nadiya’s life is about to change forever. Soon she will be filled with more power than seems possible, guarded by a man who radiates annoyance and carries deadly swords known to all as Mage Killers, in a temple unlike anything she’s experienced before. And someone is determined to kill her.
Can Nadiya accept and master the magic? Is Lateo there to protect or to destroy her? And is there some way for Nadiya to return to the life she once lived?
You just need to read this captivating book and discover all the answers for yourself!
I absolutely ADORE Lateo!!! I do so love me a male MC with layers! And Lateo has layers in spades! To begin with he has a really gruff and abrasive nature but the farther we read the more we get to peel back and see all these lovely and wonderful layers Baxendell has created. From compassion and kindness, to his faith and devotion, to love and desire, Lateo was written just perfectly and he really stole the show for me in this book.
But I also really enjoyed Nadiya and her arc thus far. Nadiya has lived a rather intellectual, analytical, non emotion driven life. Which has developed her into a somewhat selfish character (it’s ok…she admits this herself). And this is an aspect of her personality that I didn’t relate to at all. But the more you read and the deeper into the story you delve the more she learns about herself and the world around her. And she is definitely faced with some world shattering challenges and experiences that will force her to grow and question the path she has set out for herself.
I really really enjoyed the romance in this book. It was so well done! And I couldn’t help but root for every smile, touch, and unexpected kiss! However…this is a 5 book series so I am under no illusion that things will be happily ever after just yet and I am sure they will come up against many challenges and obstacles along the way (They just better end up together…*crosses fingers* and *sends out romance vibes*)
So…anyways…this was a well developed and written beginning to what I am sure will become one very interesting, battle and romance filled, epic adventure!
All Nadiya has ever wanted was to go from a no-name mage to a mage commander. She does everything she can to prove herself.
Until she touches a “rock”…I mean, Heart of Asentai, a relic, and suddenly now she’s the prophesied Beata. And is also stuck with a warrior priest, Second to the High Priest, and he’s insufferable and he hates her, and she him, but now they have to be together at all times in order to protect her and monitor her. And Nadiya is determined to get rid of this relic’s power and go back to her normal life. Easy…right?
This was a lot of fun to read! It’s a bit slower paced at first because we’re really learning about this detailed world, its magic system, as well as why Runai and the priests essentially hate each other, and we learn a lot about the characters, especially little Nadiya.
Nadiya is ambitious, stubborn and determined to always get her way. Her determination was admirable. She just wanted everything to stay the same and not change because, as she likes to say, for touching a measly rock 😅 That poor girl.
But the banter between her and Lateo was FUUUN to read. The tension and uncomfortableness they had around each other made me giggle 🤭 The “hate” they threw at each other was silly and funny, and made for an agonizing slow burn, which is how I love them!
I will say Nadiya was not my favorite. She’s primarily why I gave this 4 ⭐️ because she was rather annoying to me. I know she’s young, and I was totally on her side wanting to get back her old life, HOWEVER, after she experiences her powers and learns more about herself, Lateo, the priests, I would THINK she’d change her thoughts and views, but she doesn’t. She’s still determined to go back to normal, and then suddenly, she’s okay with her powers. She was just a bit too wishy-washy for me and well, Lateo could do better 😅 I enjoyed their tension, but I do feel like they’d be better as good friends, not romantic.
I also wish there was more detail about the world and its history. It’s still very detailed, but the history behind the Runai and priests and their enemies, the Embrei, I wish I had more background to understand why.
I do highly recommend this read if you love bodyguard enemies to lovers slow burn romances with a detailed world!
I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In this book, Nadiya is a no-name mage, meaning she has magic but was born into a non-magical family. She doesn’t have as much power as the noble families and the noble kids pay no attention to her, except one mean girl. She has more than enough ambition to make up for what she lacks in power. She is set to be the first no-name to graduate to Commander. That is until there is a catastrophe at the temple and she defies the Prince’s orders and hold the temple open so all the kids can get out but gets stuck inside in the process. When she accidentally touches an ancient artifact she is turned into a living relic and is no longer No-Name Nadiya, but the Beata. In this world, the characters are wonderfully complex Both Nadiya and Lateo are incredibly smart and mature for their young ages, yet can be so incredibly naive at other times. Nadiya is a character that at the beginning is driven to one goal and one goal only. And you don’t even get the extent of what she wants until further into the book. But as she grows, she sees things differently most of the time. As with most young people, sometimes they can’t see what’s right in front of their face! And Lateo is a strong, compassionate and amazingly patient person. (You have to be to put up with Nadiya at time!) Getting to see both sides of him as her protector but also as the second is a great juxtaposition. And the supporting characters are perfect in you never know who is going to turn their back on Nadiya or help her. The book really keeps you guessing who is in on it until the end. (Although I did figure out, I thought there was more involved than there was!) I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and after reading reviews I see that this is more to another series, so I am going to look into those books as well!
This book was a lot of fun. The characters were wonderful. (Especially Lateo!) This is just how I like a good enemies to lovers story. That aspect of the story was chef's kiss. The chemistry was off the charts and I was rooting for them so hard. The little "goodnight" repetition had me squealing! Seriously, this is the second book I've read by this author with the enemies to lovers trope and she nailed it both times. I was eating it up with a spoon.
The plot was suitably high stakes and there was a lot of mystery and drama. The Grecian-esque worldbuilding was very atmospheric and I really enjoyed that setting.
However, the fantasy rules threw me. I have found that lately if a book has too much worldbuilding along the magic system, my brain sort of shuts down and stops trying to understand it. That happened a bit with this one. That would probably be a reason a different reader with different preferences would love the book, though. Also, while I thought it was super interesting that our love interest was a priest-to-be (haven't seen that done lately, so points for originality!), I was also a little put off by the religious system. I'm not entirely sure why. I usually enjoy takes on Greek mythology, but this didn't really feel like that? I suppose considering the fact that one of the main characters was literally a priest for this so-called goddess, that either it would go full-bore fantasy and have this goddess be a character/show up or that the author would use the religious system to make a point or develop a theme. And...neither happened? Or maybe a point was being made and I didn't get it? I don't know. For whatever reason, I did not care for that aspect.
Overall I enjoyed it and because of that ending (*shakes my fist at the tantalizing slow-burn of it all*) I look forward to book 2!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! From the world-building to the characters, external and internal conflict, the magic system and the unique setting of this Roman Empire inspired fantasy all combined into a very enjoyable read. Throwing together through circumstance two characters from very different worlds made for plenty of banter and bickering, while also seeing each begin to understand a little of what motivates the other. Nadiya, the no-name mage, who’s life is fuelled by ambition and competition in the Runai Academy, and Lateo, one of the magic-less Solitus and the temple’s Second, whose life is a routine of incense-scented prayers, training to become the High Priest and nurturing and equipping Solitus orphans to prepare them for life outside of the temple. Tossed together by events outside their control, and their own plans for their lives, the tumultuous relationship was delightfully described and developed. The side characters were a mix of sweet and loyal, eye-rollingly annoying, charming and self serving. I look forward to getting to see where their journeys take them and how they develop. The characters all had insecurities and shortcomings, but were also strong, brave, kind and selfless, no unrealistically perfect individuals, humanely flawed but capable of great goodness. The conflict plot was intriguing, and also gradually increased the reader’s understanding of the magic system, along with the world building growing the book horizons to extend past the immediate location of the characters. Definitely keen to see what’s to come in this series! If you enjoy unique magic systems, a Roman inspired setting, entertaining banter, action, character growth and clean slow burn romance, then I’d add this to your list.
I was fortunate enough to read this as an advanced reader copy, all opinions are my own.
My heart! This book was mind-blowing and it's the first one in this series?! I can't even imagine how it's all going to turn out (it feels like there are a million possibilities) but I'm here for all of it! Celeste Baxendell writes compelling characters, intricate plots with multiple layers to discover, plot twists and revelations that keep the reader flipping the pages, and the most swoony romance + delicious chemistry for this enemies-to-lovers story that is enough to satisfy readers for a book 1 while also making us wish for more. Lateo and Nadiya have my heart and I'm so rooting for both of them even though I don't know how everything's going to go down in the next books. This one ends in a cliffhanger, but I'm just really glad the next one releases in July because I need to know what's next! This one had action, a really cool and intriguing world-building with Runai (mages) and Solitus (non-mages), Academy vs. Asentai's Temple, and political and religious factions, all with a Roman Empire-esque background. I loved that this book's forced proximity allowed us to see what Lateo's daily routine looks like in the temple while also getting to understand Nadiya's ambition and struggles. What I did miss was Lateo's POV, since we only get Nadiya's, but that's about my only "complaint" (the almost kisses, one actual kiss, and his "did he do this to you?" almost made up for it). The cast of supporting characters was great and I loved the friendships with Raeka and Erasmus, as well as Eripio's presence here and there. I swooned, laughed, snorted, and gave the evil eye to certain characters throughout this story. I know I'm forgetting a bunch of things I wanted to point out, but, again, #mindblown Seriously, this author's writing is just that good! I can't wait for her next one! ~ 5 stars!
Loved! It! I don't even know where to start! Such a beautiful story, but also exciting! Such an amazing story and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Now this one was lil bit more slower paced, not a whole lot of action it felt more of a set up of the story, the world, and the characters and relationships between them all. And I loved it, it wasn't boring in anyway, it held my attention and I was constantly just wanting to get back to it. Now don't get me wrong there is action, there is intrigue and suspense and some mystery like I don't know what's happening and characters seem to be hiding things, it's like so much is going on and you don't even know it. And all those aspects are probably going to be built on!!
Characters! Oh how I loved these characters, like they are flawed and I felt for the FMC, Nadiya, she's so lonely, feels like she doesn't matter, she's got all these emotions and I just want to hug her and at other times ask her why she does something because it was dumb, she's got issues but she's amazing! Then there's Lateo MMC, who's kinda guarded and I was a lil mad at him for being so heartless at times but then other times he's like the sweetest and cares so much for her. He also seems to have some secrets....so can't wait to find out what those might be 🤭! And yes this is an enemies to lovers and I'm here for it, so good!! Like I highlighted so many quotes between these two!!
I felt like there was even some nods to The Prince's Captive, which is her duology set in the same world, and that was kinda fun! It doesn't in any way mean you have to read that one first but there is some like ties I think between the two that were interesting to me!
There's also some pretty good character growth here, both of them learn to accept each other, and their different ways. The world building is good too, I love how creative it is and expansive! Like the amount of detail she has in this world, with different clans, and the magic system, and the culture and every detail is thought out!
So definitely read this book if you love, slow burn, enemies to lovers, good vs. Evil, fantasy!
Content: No-Spice, no swearing, death, violence, nothing graphic
me rn: 😞😞😞 after reading and loving the robin hood retelling the wicked prince by baxendall, i was so sure I'd love this too, especially after she herself pitched it as the wicked prince, with many similarities. im sad to say, they aren't. the same. it started out promising and i was seated for the impending turn of events, starting from a humble mage school to Power but it was so anti climatic.
i don't have to like characters from the get go. character development exists for a reason. when i didn't vibe with nadiya in the start, i thought ha the woman she is going to become! but it was taking so long...... i never came to like her, which was the main deal breaker since she is the sole pov. she was insecure as hell and weak minded, her priorities were misplaced and i just didn't like being in her brain. complaining about being the chosen one and wanting to go back being 'no-name'... slap me (her) in the head. it became tired. she was annoying, period.
from the reviews i saw, the romance btw lateo and nadiya should've been my ideal. they described it as 'slow burn, spanning multiple books, they don't get together in book one!', then why did they kiss at 20%............. lateo was half in love by then, saying things like i hate you for being you, the hidden meaning being he can't get attached bc of his priestly vows, like you'd have to be blind and deaf to not see it, which nadiya is by the looks of it (pun not intended). she was so DUMB. and lateo was becoming just as insecure. i didn't stick around for the reveal of his and sulien's past but it was so painfully obvious. i don't care enough alas.
im sad i didn't adore it. i had hopes it would be soulswift salvation but no.
Nadiya knows who she is. She is a no name mage with little vitae and is on the command track where no names do not thrive. Her ambition knows no limits as she is determined to make a name for herself and she will die trying. All she has accomplished she has done herself and she is proud of what she has done. However, her plans and ambitions get derailed when an accident at the temple makes her something she feels she is not. Now a walking holy relic, she must not only figure out the cause of the accident but determine how she is to live with the changes she faces. Being stuck with the High Priest’s Second, Lateo, who is Solitus and therefore clearly does not understand being Runai infuriates her to no end and complicates her plans even more. But the two learn to work together to stop an even greater issue that is hiding in plain sight.
These characters are complex and will clearly need more than one book to unravel the mess that is being played out. It is interesting to see how the future that Gavril and Marcella worked so hard to be yet not as they envisioned either. The system is clearly broken with some serious baggage from the separation the system has created. Nadiya is so focused on her ambition and her inability to compromise at times that I find I am equally frustrated yet fascinated by her. Lateo clearly has some anger issues and is carrying some baggage but he is probably my favorite character from this new series. Celeste is magnificent at giving us flawed characters that you can relate to or understand what drives them. I am eagerly awaiting the rest of this series.
This was the first story I’ve read by Celeste Baxendell, and I’m impressed by her writing abilities. The plot is unique and interesting, the fantasy elements are intriguing, the world is well crafted, and the characters are believable. These aspects made for a great read, and I think most people interested in young adult fantasy stories would love this story.
However, there are two areas in the story that I believe could use improvement. The romance was very minimal in the story, limited to the point that I would call this story fantasy, with only a hint of romance. Secondly, I thought there were some issues with the main character that border on moral problems, such as her ambition nearly getting herself killed, not spending enough time considering how her actions impact those around her, and begging for forgiveness rather than asking for permission. At times I felt the author was addressing these issues with the comments of other characters who also saw these flaws, but I didn’t see enough self-reflection or growth by the protagonist. These actions made the character difficult to like at times.
Despite the flaws of the main character and the too limited romance, I think this was an extremely well written book. Scenes were believable and well constructed, the plot was engaging, and the fantasy was fun and unique. I’m drawn to the story and the world, but with the limited romance and the slightly problematic protagonist, I struggled to engage as much as I could.
I was gonna DNF at 39%, but still decided to read on. Thankfully, just at where I started once more, the plot finally started to get more interesting and remained that way for the rest of the book. I am so glad that by the time I finished reading the book, I was not just skipping and skimming the text, but actually feeling a bit invested in the story and characters. I was definitely rooting for Lateo by the end - poor boy, he was so obvious, yet girlie was totally oblivious.
If there’s one thing about this author, it’s that she never does insta-love. The build up was slow but well-paced, reasons why they disliked each other were reasonable and logical (finally!) but boy, they really need to sort out their differences and prejudices between runai and solitus.
It was also interesting to read about the differences in Nadiya's and Lateo's values and motivations. I don't think I've ever read anything expressed this clearly and realistically. I feel like I’m finally reading a book where there's an absolute need for a trilogy or duology. Like the author really took time to set FMC’s character, motivation and flaws, as well as to establish the relationship between Nadiya and Lateo in a way where they still have so many things to work on before I actually see them becoming a couple. I often drop the series after reading the first book, but yet, I find myself actually looking forward to this author’s next book, so I hope she won't disappoint.
⭐️Powerful rune magic, priests, mages, and holy relics! Sacred Heart is the first book in the Rune Heart Series and can be purchased through the link in my bio and today’s story! I really enjoyed this YA fantasy full of slow burn romance and internal struggles with personal purpose.⭐️
💛Nadiya has spent her whole life fighting to prove her place amongst the Runai, those blessed by Assentai to carry rune magic. She was born from Solitus parents (think Muggles) and is known as a no-name mage. Her ambition to prove herself has become her entire identity, until a series of events results in her absorbing the Goddess vitae (the energy that powers magic) and becoming not only the most powerful mage in existence overnight, but also a living holy relic! Now she must be protected at all the costs, and the future that she worked so hard to achieve has dramatically changed.
🌹I was very impressed with the elaborate world building, with various clans, systems of magic, festivals, and modes of worship! I also adored the dynamic of the romantic interest being Nadiya’s bodyguard, Lateo, the handsome apprentice who is in line to be the next High Priest. The division between Runai and Solitus initially creates resentment between them, but forced to spend every waking moment together the dynamic slowly shifts.
⭐️This is a great book if you love YA, training academies, no spice enemies to lover, and Chosen One tropes!
Nadiya starts out the book being so ambitiously driven she nearly kills herself everyday just to be noticed and to improve on her magic. When she receives more magic than any other living person she has a hard time reconciling with the fact that she won't be remembered in history the way she wants. Her character development through out the book is slow but towards the end she seems to be turning a new leaf. She sparks up a friendship with her guard Lateo, after being assured he isn't going to kill her the first chance he gets. They go from pure hatred to friends, with hidden feelings. The slow burn in this book and the banter had me feeling all the feels. I was kicking me feet giggling and wanting to grab them and tell them to just admit their feelings already! I liked that Nadiya and Lateo came to an understanding amongst themselves despite their class differences. Nadiya also came to terms with the idea that maybe the Runai and Solitus could potentially live in harmony as long as both sides could put their predjudice aside. I hope to see Nadiya and Lateo working together to make life easier for both sides as the series progresses. Overall, a very enjoyable book with pretty easy to follow world building. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book to see where their relationship goes! This book got me out of my almost month long reading slump, so this is a must read in my opinion!
I follow the author on Instagram and her teasers of the book had me hooked…and I am happy to say Sacred Hearts lived up to the hype.
Things I loved:
The world building is original and so intriguing. I’m really interested to learn more it and about the people there, especially the Embrai Elemens.
The romance is packed full with swoony moments, but stays clean and appropriate for the two main characters who are seventeen.
I loved the layers to the main characters. Lateo I got my eyes on you, I suspect you are hiding something big!
What I didn’t love: I was hoping to see Nadiya and Lateo knocked off their high horses a bit. Their extreme prejudice toward each others people at times got hard to read. I keep waiting for one of them to crack and see that both Runai and Solitus have equal value, but that didn’t happen in this book. I know this is going to be a series, so I have a feeling the character growth will happen in later books, and that the pay off is definitely going to be worth the wait and so very satisfying, but I definitely wanted to shake the main characters at times.
Content: clean, no swearing, no spice, some violence but nothing to graphic.
Thank you dear author for the ARC, all opinions are my own.
I really liked this book! It was a bit different than the books I normally read, but it was quite action packed with some serious world building, and characters that were so easy to love and hate and fall somewhere in-between. I'll admit, Nadiya, the FMC, wasn't my favorite at first. Don't get me wrong, her character gets better throughout the book, and there's plenty there for her character, to root for, I think it's just the way in which we first meet her that it took me longer to appreciate her as a character. I do very much love her banter with Lateo though. That's one thing I adored--they were so... real together. And there was a rawness and vulnerability about them, underneath the anger and so-called hate, that is honestly, relatable. I also liked the idea of a magical leech. That's a little different from most urban fantasies or high fantasies that I've read before. And having that tie into a mythology of a dark deity, and it's abominations, was interesting. Overall, loving the familiar and new troupes, the excellent and diverse world building, banter, slow burn/forbidden romance, and flawed but relatable characters. Definitely looking forward to Void Heart and what new horrors await her and the others.
