This book really touched my heart. I think it’s one of the most heartfelt books by Wanda Brunstetter that I’ve read. It made me sad for the characters and my heart ached for Elsie Petersheim as she grieved so much for her missing daughter. Not knowing whether Rosa was alive or dead. Did she leave her family on her own or was she abducted as she made her way home after dark from a young people’s gathering?
The entire Petersheim family lived their lives day by day praying that Rosa would walk through the door and be with her family once again. Norman was the oldest son and deeply felt the responsibility of protecting his family. He felt guilty that he hadn’t been able to protect Rosa the night she disappeared. The book was emotional but there was happiness at the books ending. Readers don’t get to find out what happened to Rosa so this mystery will continue on into book two.
I thought this book was very realistic as it helps readers understand what families go through when a loved one disappears. The Petersheim family wanted closure but they also needed to place their faith in God and try not to solve the mystery without His help. I was glued to this story and my interest was peaked to the very last page.
I highly recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction and Christian Fiction. This is the first book in the Mifflin County Mystery series. If you enjoy mystery then you will like this book.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are entirely my own.

I received a copy for review purposes; all opinions are honest and mine alone.

With a male protagonist being the lead character, THE PROTECTOR, by Wanda Brunstetter, is a departure from her regular Amish fiction. What’s even more of a decampment from this genre queen’s usual fare is the relentless, wretched attitudes of the characters.

Every good story needs conflict, an antagonist or 3, tension and the like, so there can be protagonists and growth, with eventual resolution and in the case of Miss Wanda’s books, the proverbial HEA, (happily ever after), at least until the next book in the series has its dilemma.

Norman, the MC, is a self appointed PROTECTOR for his family and he’s martyring himself, which unfortunately, we readers get to read about; Every. Single. Thing. He. Thinks. Good ol’ Norman, and he is a mostly good guy, has a sister who is so self absorbed, I wanted to spank her - almost every time she opened her mouth. This young woman is almost 20 years old! In Amish years, that’s full grown.

There are a younger brother and sister who are tolerable but they are trying to be seen and heard. Dad is angry and Mom is sick, to the point of potentially jeopardizing her life. All of this is related to older sister, Rosa, running away from home. It’s been months with no news. Was she kidnapped? Leave on her own? Murdered? Something else? Norman is fixated of solving this mystery at the cost of his relationship with his girlfriend. His stress level is high and gets worse when family pressures come crashing down from multiple events.

For the life of me, I cannot fathom why Brunstetter opted to voice the incredibly annoying thot’s and whines of these characters for SO LONG. The resolutions didn’t come until the last 3 pages of the book. That’s literally, the last 1% of the story; too much aggravation and not nearly enough resolution and HEA for my liking. Perhaps it has to do with the next volume.

Usually, the scripture sprinkled along the storyline is water in the desert; not in this case. These characters were so grating and annoying, with just the minimalist of growth occurring in the final breath, it was too little too late. I hope that this isn’t a Wanda first read for someone. She has so many great books, this just isn’t one of them📚

*****I received this ARC ebook free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

In this sweet Amish romance we see how trials can challenge and break a relationship. Norman’s sister has gone missing. He puts finding her above his relationship. When juggling family responsibilities and romance sometimes things have to give.

I have read many of Wanda Brunstetter and loved them all, but this book was not one that I enjoyed. The story is about a family whose oldest daughter goes missing, and how each family member is affected. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. I will be interested in reading the next book in the series which comes out in 2025. It will be interesting to see what became of Rosa.

Man, this book was not for me.

I knew that going in so I can truly offer no serious criticism from any place of authority. I’d like to start this review by clarifying I mean no offense to the author of this book or any fans of the Protector series. Now, come along with me as I recount the personal mountain that I climbed and then violently tumbled down as I read The Protector.

We start off with a very interesting premise; Rosa Petersheim has gone missing and nobody has any clue as to where she has gone. This unresolved loss is much like the loss I now feel after finishing The Protector with absolutely zero headway being made towards the resolution of the book’s initial conflict. Not only that, it has been revealed to me that there are two more books I would have to conquer to have any hope of a resolution as to where Rosa has gone. The book did a good job at getting me familiar with the lives of the Petersheim family and company, but failed to quench my unyielding thirst for any sort of development in the search for Rosa.

What can I say about The Protector? Did I truly give this book a fair shake? Yes. Will I delve deeper into the fantastical Amish world that I find myself at the borders of? No. Was it worth it? Given that I get to hold this over the head of a friend whom I gifted the book to, only for her to be unable to finish it? Ach jah.

This was an interesting book to read. It's about the Petersheim family and how they all cope with Rosa's disappearance.

The characters that I liked the best were Norman, Tena, and Salina. They all did their best to be caring and compassionate. Elsie touched my heart the most. I can't imagine my child disappearing and not knowing where they are. Susan is annoying and doesn't really carry her weight. I appreciate that Wanda Brunstetter includes a full spectrum of characters; just like there are different personalities in real life.

The ending is a cliffhanger which I love! I'm eager to read the next books and find out what happens.

The Protector which is the debate story in A Mifflin County Mystery series written by Wanda Brunstetter jumps right into theme of the book. The characters are very well defined and bring realism to the story. The mystery will keep the readers interest throughout the entire story. I also loved the cover to this book which will also draw the readers into the story.
I was given a complimentary ebook of this story to read and review from Barbour Publishing and Netgalley. I have rated this story with five stars and highly recommend it to others.
Congratulations to Wanda Brunstetter on a great start to her new series.

An Amish family is rocked by the disappearance of the oldest daughter when she doesn't return home from a date to a young people's outing. Her boyfriend insists he has no idea what happened to her. He said she broke up with him there and left on her own. As the oldest son, Norman had always looked out for his sister, determined to keep her safe. He feels he's failed his family and is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery, as well as ease the burden of the rest of his family and keep them as safe as possible. But is his determination to solve all of his family's problems causing him to risk his relationship with his own girlfriend and cause him his own set of problems?

This is Wanda Brunstetters first book in the Mifflin County Series and it was amazing. When a young Amish girl, Rosa, attends a party with her boyfriend and doesn’t return, her brother, Norman, diligently tries to find her. Will his obsession to locate her ruin his relationship with his girlfriend? Will Rosa’s mother’s health continue to deteriorate as she daily calls the police station for leads on her missing daughter? I absolutely enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next one in the series for the answers to these questions. This was a real page turner and keeps me wondering how it’s going to end. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author and the publisher. All words are my own.

Imagine standing at the edge of a cliff, gazing into a vast, uncertain expanse where each gust of wind seems to carry whispers of unanswered questions and unspoken prayers. This is the feeling that envelops you as you read The Protector by Wanda E. Brunstetter. In this novel, Brunstetter does more than spin a mystery; she invites us to explore the raw, unfiltered emotions of fear, faith, and familial bonds.

When Norman Petersheim’s world is turned upside down by his sister Rosa’s disappearance, we are drawn into his deep internal struggle. Brunstetter reveals a search for answers and allows us to feel the weight of Norman’s responsibility and the profound impact of his faith. I was moved by how Norman’s journey mirrors our own quests for meaning in times of darkness.

One of the most poignant moments in the book is when Norman prays for Rosa and for peace in his family’s fractured world. Brunstetter captures this moment with such tenderness: “Norman prayed silently, thanking God for the food on the table and asking Him to bring Rosa safely home.” It’s a beautiful reminder of how even the simplest prayers can reflect our deepest yearnings.

Through Norman’s story, we confront questions that reverberate with anyone who has faced their own trials: “If the bad things people do bother us so much, can you imagine the way God must feel as He looks down from heaven at the beautiful world He created and sees so much corruption?”

Brunstetter’s portrayal of the Petersheim family’s crisis is vivid and heartfelt. You don’t merely read about their struggles; you live through their pain and hope. The characters become a part of your own thoughts, and the story lingers with you long after the final page is turned.

As The Protector unfolds, it becomes evident that this is only the beginning of a larger journey. The unresolved ending invites us to contemplate not just the mystery, but also the broader questions of life, faith, and hope.

In a literary landscape often filled with familiar tropes, The Protector offers something truly special. It’s not just a book to read but a profound experience that invites you to explore the deeper currents of faith and redemption. If you are searching for a story that touches on the divine aspects of life, this book is a journey worth taking.

I received a digital ARC of The Protector from the publisher, Barbour Publishing, and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

This is the first book in Wanda’s new mystery series. This is set in the Big Valley area in Mifflin County Pa. A young Amish woman disappears and her family is so upset that it disrupts their lives, affects their relationships and health. Her older brother does regain his Faith and gets his life back. Looking forward to the next book in the series to find the answers.

The Protector is Wanda Brunstetter's first book in her new Mifflin County Mystery series. There will be a total of three books.

After a night out with her boyfriend, Rosa Petersheim completely disappears. Believing that she didn't voluntarily leave their community, her brother, Norman, tries to help the police find his sister, But will Norman's fixation on finding his lost sister cause him to lose the love of his life, Salina Swarey?

This story resonated with me quite a bit, as I have a daughter who has forsaken the Christian faith and is living an ungodly lifestyle. She also no longer wants to be in communication with us, just as Rosa in the story did to her family. There is a lot of drama in this story that makes you wonder what will happen next.

I received an e-ARC of this book from #NetGalley and #BarbourPublishing. All opinions contained herein are strictly my own.

What really happened to Rosa?
This is the question the entire story is wrapped around. But I loved that the main character is really Norman, who in true big brother fashion feels he failed her. Most Amish fiction is centered on a female character, but I loved seeing this story from a male point of view.
There is so much to learn from Rosa and her family. We can pray, begging God when we do not get the answers we want. We can worry ourselves sick and ruin our own lives over circumstances we cannot control. We can let anger and bitterness take root instead of letting God carry our burdens for us. And we can wish for things to be different, to the extent of missing the good that God has put right in front of us.
Every situation in this book felt absolutely real. My heart pounded, my stomach ached, and my eyes teared up as I followed this family’s heartache. I am glad this is the beginning of a trilogy as there is much more to the Petersheim family’s drama that needs to be told.
Congratulations to Wanda Brunstetter for writing a truly captivating novel. This book will haunt me until I finally get the rest of the story. For fans of Amish fiction and Christian mystery/suspense, this is a must read. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

The 1st Book in the New Series called, "A Mifflin County Mystery", is a great story to read!
Wanda E. Brunstetter has done an amazing job roping, us readers, into this series!
Once you start reading the book, you won't be able to stop.
This story is based on the Petersheim family in Belleville, PA. The family is distraught & concerned, because their daughter and sister, Rosa, is missing. Norman, the oldest brother of Rosa, has taken her disappearance hard. He feels responsible for her missing. He dedicates all his time and energy into trying to find her. Because of his dedication for his sister, his relationship with his girlfriend is suffering.
He feels like he needs to find her before all else.
However, he realizes he can't have it both ways, or can he?
Who all is suffering from this ordeal? What does Norman, and his mom think about the investigation? What do they think about Rosa's friends? Is everyone telling the truth, or is someone hiding something?

To find answers to these questions, you can grab your copy in August. This is great story!

What has happened to Rosa is she alive, taken or has she run away to live among the English?

Wow what a great way to start a new series. The Protector A Mifflin County Mystery had me fully engaged with all the new characters and a new location.

I found myself throughout the book trying to find out who was keeping what secret, and if and when they would be found out? Noone was above suspicion.

Lots of twists and turns in this great new story. I am so ready for more.

The Protector A Mifflin County Mystery book one of the Mifflin County Mystery is a must read.  Highly recommend.

To many, author Wanda E Brunstetter is considered the matriarch of Amish Christian stories. She has many published works and people highly anticipate her releases. I read a few "Amish" stories, but they are not my preferred genre. I do find some to be quite interesting.

Ms. Brunstetter's newest release is a mystery series and The Protector centers around the recent disappearance of Rosa. No traces have been discovered by police or the Amish community. Rosa's brother, Norman, considers himself to be his sister's protector (hence the book title). He feels at a loss to be getting nowhere in his own personal search for Rosa.

As I was reading this book, I simply felt like it was a look at family and community individuals who are hurting from the disappearance of Rosa. I felt that their feelings were rehashed too many times in the book's writing, and this repetition made for sluggish, dull reading. I also did not care for the characters individually. They were simply too fault-finding, busy-body minded, and had adverse reactions to trivial matters.

The book is, however, good clean reading and shows the hurt a family experiences when tragedy hits whether the event is actually detailed or they are left hanging with lack of details. I did find the harsh attitude of the Amish father difficult to come to terms with, but have found that this is somewhat the case amongst the Amish.

The author is an expert on Amish fiction. She does a great job telling the story about what Amish life is like. This story caught my attention due to it being a mystery. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series to see how all of the loose ends are tied up. My most favorite characters by far were Salina and Alvin. They both seem to have great personalities.

Thanks so much for that netgalley and Barbour publishing for the ARC. The review will be posted on my blog not more than 30 days prior to publication. The opinions are my own.

This book masterfully weaves together mystery, romance, and a Christian theme, making for an emotionally rich and engaging read. The Petersheim family’s world is shaken by the disappearance of Rose, and each member’s personal struggle adds depth to the story. Beyond the central mystery, the book touches on themes of grief, health challenges, longing, and the beauty of second chances in love.
While some questions remain unanswered…they add to the anticipation for the next installment. I’m looking forward to continuing this heartfelt series.

When things happen that are beyond out control we must learn to lean on God to keep the faith. For the Petersheim family there faith is tested when there daughter Rosa disappears and health issues bring trouble to the family. Mystery and faith bring this story to life.

I have in the past loved the books I've read by Wanda Brunstetter. For some reason, this one felt different. It seemed to start slowly and not really go anywhere. It felt a little disjointed, and didn't have that homey, nostalgic feeling that her other books seem to have. I also felt it was a bit anticlimactic, which was a little disappointing.

One of the things I didn't love was all of the thoughts that went through the minds of the characters, especially Norman and his sister Susan. It felt a little frustrating.

I got to read the ARC of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

The Protector is an excellent, intriguing novel, the first in a new series, in which I often felt as if I were there with the Petersheim family. It is an Amish family drama with a devastating mystery. I saw how family members struggled to endure the crisis in different ways. The characters were very realistic, and while I learned their surface personalities, I appreciated getting to know two people in depth. I also appreciated the spiritual lessons, including one that sparked a sermon.

Mahlon and Elsie’s oldest daughter, Rosa, went to a young people’s gathering with her boyfriend. Neither her parents nor her oldest brother, Norman, liked him, but Rosa continued to see him. She did not return home that night. Her boyfriend said they had a disagreement, and Rosa walked away, refusing a ride from him. She was not seen by her family or friends again. Area law enforcement officers went all out to find her, questioning family and friends, even searching the woods.

Norman took it upon himself to search for Rosa when he wasn’t working. Norman blamed himself for Rosa’s disappearance, believing he failed to protect her. He felt that, as the oldest offspring, his responsibility was to protect their family. He loved Salina, the young woman he was courting, but put any thoughts of marrying her aside until Rosa was found.

Rosa does not appear in the novel, even though she is prayed for, talked about, and thought of every day. Readers get to know her through the eyes and hearts of her family and friends. The hardest thing for Rosa’s family is not knowing if she felt them too strict and had planned to run away, or if she met with foul play and was no longer alive.

Elsie’s health began to deteriorate. She was barely eating, sleeping, or functioning. In the winter, she saw an early robin outdoors in the snow, and was concerned for it. She remembered a verse in Matthew about how the Lord cares for the birds, and how much more He cares for us. She saw what Jesus said about worry in the following verse and repented, asking the Lord’s help to not worry, but to trust in Him.

The day Elsie learned from the sheriff that Rosa’s case was cold and they stopped searching, she collapsed in the snow, leading to her discovering and learning about the disease she now had and how stress was making it much worse. Elsie had to rely on the Lord more than ever.

This very well-written novel includes the first year of Rosa’s absence, and thanks to the author’s skill in storytelling, I learned a great deal about how a family reacts to the devastating loss of an adult child. The spiritual lessons they lived could be helpful to readers going through any number of circumstances. There are many beautiful aspects of Amish life shared, one being how they began to find themselves in tune with nature again as they observed and learned from various species of birds and butterflies. This is the first of a new series, and I am looking forward to getting to know the other family members better and finding Rosa – hopefully alive! I highly recommend this novel to those who enjoy novels about the Amish, and are fans of challenging mysteries and the author.

The Protector is Wanda Brunstetter’s newest novel, the first book in the Mifflin County Mystery Series. I enjoy Amish fiction and this author is one of my favorites.

The Protector is quite different than Wanda Brunstetter’s other books. The subject matter is different than most Amish novels. It is about a family member that has gone missing and its impact on each person of the family. The characters, how they handle the stress of the unknown, and how it impacts the family dynamic seemed rather gloomy.

Following a date from night before Rosa Petersheim has gone missing. It is like she vanished and no one has seen her or knows what happened to her. Has she run away? Is it foul play? The police were contacted and investigated the Rosa’s disappearance, but the investigation has stalled. Now three months later, the family has gone on and tried to live their lives. But they are functioning under shadow of their grief and the unknown. In its wake are some very unhealthy family dynamics.

After Rosa went missing her brother Norman has taken on the burden of trying to find Rosa or what happened to her. All his efforts have gone nowhere. Norman had dated Salina for a while now and it seemed like marriage might be on the horizon. But with all his efforts to find Rosa, it has impacted Norman’s relationship with Salina.

Of course, Elsie’s mother’s heart is grieving for her daughter and it has impacted her health. Their father, Mahlon has grown angry and bitter. Their daughter Susan’s reaction has exposed some of her character flaws. Only Tena seems to have the most caring response to all this stress.

Will they ever find out what happened to Rosa? Will she come back home one day? If so, will she be welcomed home or shut out?

Overall, I found the storyline kind of depressing. It seemed like each of the characters were caught up in their own thoughts and feelings without healthy and caring input from others. They did not share their burdens with each other or even friends. It was not until near of end of the storyline that there was some breakthrough in this family’s responses to this trial.

I thought the subject was unique for Amish fiction. In most Amish fiction there is a strong sense of community and caring that seemed to be absent here. Not sure if that was intentional. When an Amish family has someone that goes missing are they presumed to have run away? Is the family shamed or blamed for those circumstances?

I enjoy Wanda Brunstetter’s writing, but struggled a bit with The Protector’s storyline and the characters’ negativity. Since some of the mystery was left hanging, there was no real or satisfying conclusion. I look forward to reading more books by Wanda Brunstetter. I am not sure if this storyline will carry over to the future novels in this series.

I would like to thank Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of The Protector by Wanda E. Brunstetter. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

The Protector by Wanda E. Brunstetter
A Mifflin County Mystery
Book 1 of 2: Mifflin County Mysteries
in Amish Romance
A Mysterious Disappearance Shakes an Amish Family's Faith
In book one of A Mifflin County Mystery series, after a night out with her boyfriend, Rosa Petersheim has disappeared from the Big Valley without a trace. Norman Petersheim always considered himself his sister's protector, and he can't believe she would have left home of her own accord. Clearly, he must have failed her. He throws all he has into helping the authorities search for Rosa, while trying to support his parents and siblings--who are struggling both mentally and physically. Salina Swarey loves Norman and hopes they are headed toward marriage, but his obsession with Rosa's whereabouts is driving them apart. Can Norman find peace and contentment, even if he never learns where Rosa has gone?
This is Rosa Petersheim 's story.
This is Elsie Petersheim, husband Mahlon and children 's story.
This is Norman Petersheim and his girlfriend, Salina Swarey’s story.
Rosa boyfriend Ephraim Peight’s story.
HAVE YOU SEEN ROSA ANYWHERE?” Norman Petersheim’s mother asked when Norman entered the kitchen Saturday morning, with the hope that breakfast would be ready.
“No, I haven’t. Has my sister gone missing?” He chuckled and grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl in the center of the table.
Mom’s forehead wrinkled, and her stern blue eyes pierced Norman like icicles. “This is not a laughing matter, Son. Rosa didn’t answer when I knocked on her bedroom door, and when I peeked inside, she wasn’t there. Rosa’s bed was neatly made, which seemed odd because she rarely makes her bed before leaving for work. Usually I make it for her.” His mother’s shoulders rose, and with a huff she added, “Like all my children, that young woman has her good points, but she can also be undependable at times. Yesterday, she promised that she would get up early this morning and help me make a batch of blueberry pancakes.” Mom made a sweeping gesture of the room. “But as you can see, she is not here to make good on her word.”
“Did you knock on Susan and Tena’s door? Rosa could be in their room, talking to them about her date with Ephraim last night.”
I recommend this book.
The Protector by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a 5 star book.

This is a wonderful start to a new series. The book starts out with a mystery that rocks the Amish community. Rosa has turned up missing with no trace for anyone to follow. Right away I was glued to this intriguing book. I adored Norman and his intense need to protect his family and those around him. Each day his sister is missing, he deepens his search to find her. Why aren’t the police looking diligently for her? Did she run away or did something far worse happen to her? Norman tries so hard to keep his wits about him while juggling work, a relationship and watching over his family. I loved his deep faith but it upset me to think he blames himself for his sister’s disappearance. Have you ever blamed yourself for something that you didn’t have control over?

I have to mention one of Norman’s younger sisters. Susan has a big problem with jealousy over her older sister that is missing. She feels like her mother loves Rosa more than her. When Rosa disappears, Susan steps up to get her mother to love her more. It was so sad to see this young woman more worried about being the favorite in her mother’s eyes than being concerned about her older sister missing. The author does an excellent job of showing how jealousy can turn a person’s heart to bitterness.

The author also touches on Graves Disease. Norman’s mother has been diagnosed with it and now the family has become more concerned for her health. I didn’t know anything about this illness but I appreciate how the author gives us facts that help us understand it better. The family is starting to become overwhelmed with everything going on which starts to affect relationships. One thing that is important about this book is how we need to always make time for God. In the story many of the characters become so involved in things going on in their lives, they stop spending time with God. “There are too many lukewarm Christians warming benches, so to speak.”

Don’t miss this unforgettable story about faith, trust, loss and reconciliation. I love the different scriptures used in the story and faith that was illustrated throughout the story. I anxiously await the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The review is my own opinion.
