A ruthless prince. A desperate mage. A cursed kingdom.
Prince Ryu’s hatred of magic is matched only by his loyalty to his dying country. So when his mother orders him to track down a mage consorting with Arn’s legendary tidefoxes, he won’t let anything stand in his way of healing the land… not even the beautiful mage or her animal companions.
Mellie reluctantly agrees to help Arn and the mysterious Ryu, but when she learns he’s actually the cunning prince known for hunting mages, it’s too late to run—she’s his captive, and the lives of her wolves and fox are at risk unless she does exactly what Ryu wants.
The longer Ryu and Mellie work together, the more Ryu’s beliefs about magic and mages are challenged—horrifyingly, magic may be the only key to reviving the land before it’s lost forever.
But the High Sovereign hates magic as much as ever, and her patience for Ryu’s growing affection is thin. Ryu may be weak, but she is not, and she will see that all magic is eradicated from Arn for good, even if that means killing Arn itself. Ryu and Mellie must set aside their differences if they want to have any hope of saving Arn before it’s destroyed beyond repair.
Perfect for fans of Tara Grayce, Shari Tapscott, and Kenley Davidson, Of Tides and Treason is the newest installment in the Kasmian Chronicles, a series of swoony romantic fantasy connected standalones.
Girl, you have done it again. How am I meant to find a man when Lopez sets my standards too high??? She literally had me giggling and kicking my feet the entire time.
Of Tides and Treason continues Lopez's tradition of making sequels that have no right being THAT AMAZING!
Mellie and Ryu are such an entertaining sunshine x grumpy couple. I promise, guys, even though Rye was cruel to my girl Isa in Of Cadence and Chaos, he really redeemed himself here. Mellie is such a refreshing take over a main character and I strongly believe she is Steve Irwin's long lost daughter.
I was also so overjoyed to see my favourite characters from the first 2 books make an appearance :))
The Kasmian world continues to expand in this book at a pace that's not too overloading for readers. The world she creates is so different from other fictional fantasy worlds and I love how the fictional cultures are tributes to real life cultures too with her own twist on them.
SPOILERS BELOW!!
me whenever Ryu interacted with his mum: i think the apple's rotten right to the coreeee (rip Ryu, you would've loved BRAT by charli xcx)
me when liam, isa and vendar appeared: WE'RE GETTING THE GANG BACK TOGETHERRR
me when Ryu said his engagement to Mellie was just a ruse: denial is a river in egypt boi
AND OMG I MANIFESTED VENDAR BEING THE LEAD OF THE NEXT BOOK AND QUEEN LOPEZ DELIVERED TYYY
Arn is a dying land and prince Ryu is willing to do anything to save it and its people, even if it means getting help from a mage who's connected to Arn's legendary tidefoxes. Magic is hated in Arn, especially by the High Sovereign, Ryu's mother, who's created prison camps for mages of all countries. She's obsessed with eradicating all magic, but Ryu begins to see another picture when he's working with Mellie to heal the land. Could she be right in thinking their attitude towards magic and mages is what ails Arn?
The third book in the series, but can be read as a standalone if you want to. We get a glimpse of former main characters and what has happened in previous books, which could cause some problem, but more likely a wish to read the other books as well, so I recommend that you start with "Of Stormlarks and Silence" and then "Of Chaos and Cadance"!
To begin with it's hard to see how Ryu could end up as a hero in this story, because he's a really morally grey character who's done - and does - quite heinous things. He thinks Mellie is, despite her looks and caring manner, selfish and ruthless - just like all mages. To his defense you could say he's been almost brainwashed by his mother (who has a fairly good reason for hating mages, but it's become sort of a mania) and it's not easy to change one's view of things. Mellie, on her side, has to remind herself of who Ryu truly is and not fall for his charm and silvertongue. But she starts to influence his thoughts and it's really interesting to see Ryu develop.
The author has really succeded with this enemies-to-lovers trope and the romance is slow burn, as it should be. We get both Mellie's and Ryu's point of view and it's fun to see how they both think about each other. I'm especially fond of Mellie's magical connection to all animals, and I love her companions: the tidefox Felix and the flamewolves Fiera and Blaze! I truly love this series and now it will be a long wait for the next book...! But at least I have the short story collection "Of Love and Lore" to tie me over!
*I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *
I fell in love with this book!!! I was not ready for such a masterpiece after the first book Of Stormlarks and Silence. I consumed this book as I grew to know Mellie and Ryu. We got to know Ryu at the end of the previous book, and I was amazed how Lopez developed and brought his character more to life. Her world building is outstanding and she has grown overall with her writing.
A prince who hates magic, since it is killing his homeland, befriends the only one who can save the land. However, that person is a girl who possess magic 👀 will these two survive together or destroy one another?
Thank you Constance for the lovely read! I was given an ARC copy from the author.
After reading & really liking the first two Kasmian Chronicles books, I was delighted to be chosen to be an ARC reader for “Of Tides and Treason.” I’m happy to say this book was another great addition to the saga. As someone who has been interested in East Asian cultures for many years, I enjoyed that this book took place in Arn, the “Asian” country of the Kasmian world.
After meeting Ryu in the previous book, it was hard to see how he was going to end up being a hero. But the author does “enemies to lovers” very well here. Ryu has a good character arc, one where we the readers (and Mellie, the heroine) feel conflicted over the fact that he’s not all bad, yet still is responsible for keeping mages in prison camps. He has some redeeming qualities that begin to spark attraction in Mellie, but he also has a domineering personality where he makes choices for her and takes away her agency. How can you both like and not like someone? But of course, things happen and people change... 😊
The best “sweet and clean” romance authors can still create awesome chemistry that makes the reader’s stomach flutter and nerves sing right along with the hero and heroine, and I feel Constance succeeds in this area as well. Now I’m just sad we have to wait a long time for the next book!
Of Tides and Treason reaches favorite status for me. Everything about it was great, and I stayed up way too late to finish it.
The enemies to lovers was **chefs kiss** perfect!
Ryu had such a realistic and satisfying character arc! I loved the gradual shift to good.
Mellie was absolutely lovely! I loved her unwillingness to sacrifice her honor. She annoyed me zero times! Zero! And I am a hard person to please!
The romance was so good! It was a satisfying slow burn. I was so happy that Mellie didn’t start falling for Ryu until she saw some goodness in him. It was kept sweet and clean.
Writing, plot, pacing, all flawless.
I am enjoying the world building so much in this series! I can’t wait to read Vendar’s story.
Content: clean, spice free, no swearing except for bast*rd used once, some violence but not overly descriptive
Thank you, thank you, thank you dear author for ARC, all opinions are my own.
Constance Lopez does it again. Is this my new favorite? Maybe. I stayed up way too late finishing it!
Ryu and Mellie are an enemies to lovers story at its finest! Both characters grow so much during the story. I especially love the redemption arc for Ryu. Adorable and fierce animal companions, adventure, intrigue, and peril, readers get it all in this clean Romantasy.
Thank you to the author for the eARc. All opinions are my own.
What a ride! A ruthless prince who hates mages trying to save his land by essentially kidnapping a runaway noble who is a mage to enlist her help—these two play the enemies to more card like a fiddle. Forced proximity, heaps of tension, political maneuvering, he protects her, reluctant to fall goodness. I cannot wait for more in this epic series!
I LOVE this book! First of all it is very well written and planned out. The thought that went into every detail throughout the book made it flow effortlessly from beginning to end making it really enjoyable. The events in the story kept me engaged and made me not want to put it down, I needed to know what happened next!
I like how the characters were mature and not whiny or constantly thinking about doing something outrageously stupid. They both had their reasons for their actions, of course, but as they progressed through the story they were able to grow and accept new perspectives and challenges.
The slow burn of their relationship was perfectly seasoned with just the right spice and matched the pace of the story. No insta love.
I love everything about this story and now I can’t wait for the next installment of The Kasmian Chronicles!
I was blessed and given this story as an ARC and this is my honest opinion and freely given.
This book was amazing. The author has masterfully crafted a story of conflicted hero’s and the ability of people to grow and change. The characters are so swoons and the return of previous characters is extra fun. Definitely a must read.
I received an ARC from the author is return for an honest review. Happy reading!

4.5 stars. Another good story from the Kasmian world. I really enjoy Lopez's world building. I think it's her greatest strength. I love that the romance is clean, yet has nice tension (and swoony moments) between Ryu and Mellie. Side characters are great, especially Asahi, though I wish there were more details regarding the High Sovereign's motivations & past. I don't feel like these are really "standalone". You miss out if you haven't read the previous stories (or haven't read them in awhile). Overall, highly enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one!
I loved this book! I've been waiting all summer for it and was so exited to be on the ARC team. It's well written, slow burn, enemies to lovers, animal companion, "Touch her and you die", romantasy book for any body who enjoys such things. And to add to it all its clean with no spice romance. I'd definitely recommend!
I am a big fan of all of Constance Lopez’s books, and this one was absolutely brilliant!
When we met Ryu in the last book, he was not the nicest person. But Isa was able to put a crack in his protective shell and help him see that maybe it wasn’t the mages that were the problem. In this book he seeks out the help of a mage that is said to have a tidefox as a companion. Mellie is hiding in the last place anyone in her family would look for her. She is trying to escape being married off to a despicable man who would ruin the lives of the people she is responsible for.
This was such a beautiful story about breaking down our preconceived notions and learning how to trust that someone else will see past our previous mistakes. Absolutely loved this book!
This book had an absolute hold on me while I was reading it, and I didn’t want to put it down! I thought about the characters all the time when I was forced to stop reading, and I highlighted lines like crazy while I was reading.
This book is everything I love about romantasy! It is swoonworthy, funny, sweet, adventurous, fast-paced, and completely bingeable!
I was intrigued by Ryu in previous books, and I loved his redemption arc in this book! Ryu is morally gray and witty and complicated, and I had the best time reading about him. His character growth is well written, and I adored seeing him fall for Mellie!
Mellie is delightful, and I loved her so much! Her connection to animals was fascinating, and I loved her sense of humor and honor. She and Ryu complemented each other perfectly, and their interactions and story kept me glued to the page.
The worldbuilding in this book and series is fantastic, and I felt like I was seeing everything the characters were. I was completely entranced while reading, and I was sad to finish the book. This is definitely a book I will need to reread in the future because I loved it so much!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As everyone already knows by now, I'm OBSESSED with this series! This book absolutely deserves to be a part of that obsession. It's just so absolutely perfect! Mellie and Ryu *miiiiiiight* just be my new favorite couple (please don't tell Liam and Isa). The tension between them is just so perfect, and I love their interactions and banter. It's so hard reviewing this without spoilers because as much as I loved the entire book (literally every single second of it is incredible), most of my absolute favorite parts are towards the end. Which is honestly a great thing because I'd always rather a story get better throughout than the opposite, haha. I seriously cannot gush enough about this book. The romance and tension are perfect. The story is absolutely intriguing. The writing is literal perfection. The characters are charming and deep and lovable. I just love every single thing about it! I've actually already read it twice.. because it's truly amazing!
Another thrilling and completely riveting read! I was so intrigued by Rhu in the previous book, I just had to hear his story! These are standalone books, they do bring in characters from the previous books BUT each one makes perfect sense without having to read the previous ones, although.... I strongly recommend you do! Constance has a way with words that the story, the characters themselves, wrap around you and hug you warmly. And that's the underlying thread throughout, warmth. Ok, there ARE some cringe moments but the overall read is one of beauty and majesty. Lovely, gorgeous read doesn't even begin to explain it! Ok, gush over...
Two very different personalities, two very different agendas. Ryu's is to find someone who can help heal the land. There's a deep seated hatred of magic and mages throughout the Kingdom. If found, they're captured and enslaved. Which is what Ryu is tasked to do by his mother. Mellie, forced into a marriage she can't accept, so Mellie fled. She fled to the relative safety of the woods, in relative peace, until Ryu located her. Then a delightful dance ensued between them, loathing one second, warmth the next, but was was certain, is that Ms Lopez is the best choreographer for this type of slow dance! The placement of each step planned with precision, executed brilliantly, leaving one one in admiration at her skill.
Ms Lopez is so skilled in her craft, I live each and every word, I'm in the world she's created, I breathe the very air her characters do. Besides the two MC's, who I adored, the side characters are just as impressive. And I just loved Felix and Blaze and Fiera! Their love and protectiveness of Mellie is sweetness personified! Ryu and Mellie are chalk and cheese and I loved seeing their personalities shine through, although, Ryu is a contradiction on two legs. A gentle gardener and lover of plant life, essentially an all round good guy, who is so ruthless in his hatred of mages, speaks volumes to indoctrination, to falsehoods he's been frd. Ryu's sense of duty, his honour and his people are paramount, he'd do anything for his people, for his land. Uncovering Mellie's past brings forth first disbelief, then rage and loathing. Mellie is sweetness and caring and compassionate, but she's got spunk, she sure is no walkover. I loved her conflicting thoughts on Ryu, I adore them both equally, except...ok, I was ready to give Ryu a good shaking! Geez man, DON'T jump to conclusions! He slowly gets off his horse and realises he's been duped, by his mother, by his friend by the very beliefs he accepted as truth. Besides wanting to bop him once or twice, I really loved him. He's actually has a heart of gold and as all the realisations, the truth crashes solidly on his head, and the action he was forced to take, he shattered MY heart! But also made it sing with his finally attaining all he's supposed to be..
Golly how do I unpack this book???? A dying land, a girl fleeing from a cruel marriage arrangement, a prince who would sacrifice anything for his kingdom and his people, a crazy monarch who's lost the plot, The banter was perfect, the dance was perfect, their emotions were perfect, heck this book is as perfect as it can get! It's gives us secrets, it gives us misguided bias, it gives us drama together with a fabulous plot and characters so heartfelt. But she also gives us the angst and stress, like those final few chapters, my golly was I panting from not being able to draw in enough air! Excellent read yet again by this excellent author!
Having waited for this book to become available on audio, I was tremendously excited to immerse myself in Of Tides and Treason by fellow rogue, Constance Lopez. And it is fabulous!
This is Ryu and Mellie’s story and centres on healing the land of Arn from a mysterious malady that is causing crops to fail and animals to languish etc. I love love love the whole ‘earth magic’ vibe going on here — manifested by magical creatures tied to specific nations. In the case of Arn, it’s ‘tide foxes’, cute little magical foxes that usually bond to the ruling family, but which have chosen to shun Prince Ryu and his ‘High Sovereign’ mother for, well, shunning them and all magic.
With a setup like that, it was fairly clear to me from the start what Ryu’s redemption arc was going to involve. And it was great to gain some insight into why he and his mother despised magic and why they persecuted mages so badly. Having played a nasty antagonist in the previous book, Ryu has a LOT of ground to make up in the likability department, and it takes quite a while for him to get there. But he does get there eventually (I would have preferred it to be sooner), and by the end he’s enlightened and takes the actions required to save his people and his land. More importantly, he redeems himself sufficiently to win Mellie’s heart.
Let’s talk about Mellie — the perfect foil to Ryu’s hatred of tide foxes and magic. She’s a mage, hiding out in the forest, whose magic is all about animals. She’s accompanied by two ‘flame wolves’ from her homeland and a recently befriended tide fox, Felix. Mellie cuddles Felix a lot, and I swear I would too! He is so adorable. For some reason I imagine him to be blue, but that could be my weird imagination. Mellie is sunshiny and, although she has secrets about her past, she has an open heart. When Ryu persuades (manipulates) her into helping him save Arn, she agrees because it’s the right thing to do. A few times I thought Mellie could have been a little smarter — or less naive — but she’s likeable and manages to play a significant role in Ryu’s transformation and change of worldview.
There’s one side character of note: Asahi, who is Ryu’s best friend/scribe and constant companion. I really enjoyed his character and the banter between him and Ryu, as well as the genuine friendship between Asahi and Mellie. Ryu’s mother, the High Sovereign, meanwhile makes for a chilling antagonist. It was also great to have some glimpses of Liam and Isa from Of Chaos and Cadence, plus Evandren and elf prince Vendar — who it seems might get his own book or story next.
Overall, Of Tides and Treason is an uplifting story about love of country, healing and enlightenment. I do love a good redemption arc, and although it took me a good while to start liking Ryu, by the end I was cheering him all the way!
(I received an ARC of this book. However, all opinions are my own and not coerced by a mage-hater threatening the lives of my animal friends.)
The disclaimer above should tell you about the many interesting facets of this book. From the enemies-to-lovers aspect to the enslavement of the mages, Of Tides and Treason has a lot of ground to cover. Especially since Ryu showed up in the last book.
Ah, Ryu…
No, that wasn’t a wistful sigh! Though I’ll admit, there are plenty of swoony personality traits of his to list. His fox-like sense of humor, his fox-like cunning, his fox-like… you get the idea. But seriously, I love how Constance Lopez directly ties him to the tidefoxes even as Ryu denies all connection with them. Not to mention his character arc. The way he went from seeing them as evil beings to seeing them as people was so heartwarming! And the way he listens to Mellie in a way none of the men in her life had done previously…
Speaking of Mellie, I must say her arc was pretty fire too (pun intended–read the book to understand). Her determination to protect not only the people in her life but also Ryu’s people? Epic. And her animal magic is so fascinating! And she doesn’t lose her wits over Ryu’s attractiveness, either. But her confidence in his ability to change is part of what made her so endearing.
As an enemies-to-lovers, the question usually is, “How will the author handle it?” But Constance Lopez did not disappoint! Instead of an insta-attraction situation, Constance built the blocks of their relationship from the beginning. I mean, according to the book, they’re both attractive people, but I love how they don’t start seeing each other in a romantic way until they’re both somewhat familiar with each other’s personality and character. But even without instant attraction, their chemistry is sizzling!
Oh my goodness! What a story! I flew through this book and found it so engaging. I actually was introduced to Ms. Lopez's books only this past year with The Winter Prince and was excited to see that this series was connected! I actually binged the first two books in this series right before this one and I am so glad I did. While Of Tides and Treason can be read as a standalone, I felt so much more connected to the characters and the world having read the earlier books. Mellie was so genuine. I admired her sense of honor and her dedication to what she believed was right. The readers get to experience Arn through her eyes. She stuck to her beliefs, yet had a lot of hope for what could be in Arn and throughout the other countries. Ahane was such an interesting character. I loved seeing his POV. It gave such insight into his motivation and intentions. He was introduced in a previous book and his growth over the story was so engaging. It felt very natural and organic as his beliefs about magic were challenged. He truly cared about his people and wanted to do right by them. I was so interested in the storyline! I was not sure how things would progress and I love the exploration of the world that comes into the story. There were secrets revealed and new questions uncovered. It is such an interesting magical system and I love all the creatures in the series! As someone invested in the overarching story as well, it was exciting to see things moving forward and to see old friends again! This fantasy book was so fun and I definitely recommend it! It has some fantasy violence. There is a sweet romance side plot with only kissing. Overall, I would recommend it to teens and up and also highly recommend the other books in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
“How is your victory, your success for your country, anything but hollow if you earn it by carving out the goodness in yourself? You’ll leave behind nothing but a monster. And what can a monster do but destroy?” It’s the final cost of desperation at the end of its path. It’s the horrible image that stares back at the shell of a man left in its wake. Yet for a prince seeing his country withering away a day at a time, he’ll even latch onto the answer in the one place he has always been told is the source of all evil: magic and one of the mages that hold it. He’s a prince used to forcing the outcome he needs and ruthless in the methods to make it happen. He’s earned the name of Prince Silvertongue, a dangerous man with a deceptive charm with always an embedded scheme in his words. Yet underneath we glimpse the goodness in Prince Ryu, as does the mage Mellie, because the prince is following this path for the right reason. It’s a prince’s vow to save his country from the jaws of death that they are plunging towards. Ones that the prince is heading towards as well, blinded by the ugly future he sees on the horizon. And his escape? Heeding the words of a mage. Yet the mage Mellie understands desperation and where it’s path can take you. For her has dropped her in the middle of the woods with her only companions being of the four-footed sort. Because Mellie has a secret of her own and she can’t run far enough away from the shadow of that past. However, as Prince Ryu enters her sanctuary in the woods, she fears she has left one monster only to run straight into the path of another. Mellie isn’t willing to give up though. She’s fierce in spirit like the tidewolves that stay at her side and willing to challenge even the prince that used to calling all the shots. And we enjoy her for that and more. It’s also one of the reasons she has a chance of pulling that Prince Ryu out that sees beyond the years of deceptions to the truth so he can be the savior his country so desperately he needs. That Mellie has placed her heart on the line that’s the true Prince Ryu.
Of Tides and Treason was such a magical experience! It was certainly a ride with Mellie and Ryu as the MCs and enemies at that, but we're here for all the enemies-to-lovers trope, so it was really good! Ryu was such a fine morally gray hero, and his redemption arc was done so well, while Mellie's growth was also beautifully done (from runaway to heroine of her own story). I loved the fact that they clearly come from different cultures, yet their forced proximity and fake relationship help in their getting to know each other, as well as turn verbal sparring into a different kind of sparks (that slow burn totally pays off, and that kiss is definitely worth the wait!)
Seriously, Mellie's magic was really cool, and I loved her relationship with her flamewolves, Fiera and Blaze. Oh, and Felix was so adorable! He was his own character and the most charming one at that. Loved his love of cheese and his progression with a certain someone was really sweet (though all the feelings in every step of the way were completely justified). And of course, with this being the same world as the rest of the series, it's always cool to see past characters (like Isa and Liam) as well as get to know them a bit better (looking at you, Vendar).
It's always a treat to go back to Kasmia, and I can't recommend this book enough. If you're still reading this, just go ahead and grab yourself a copy (you know you want to 😉). I can't wait to read the next one in the series! ~ 5 stars
Of Tides and Treason was a captivating read that kept me eagerly turning its pages to see where the story would take me. I received an ARC of this book and I am happy to review it with my own thoughts. Lopez is a talented storyteller who wonderfully brought her characters to life.
Mellie is a driven and kind protagonist who was easy to like and relate to. As an animal lover myself, I enjoyed that aspect of her character and often wish I could go about my day with friendly rabbits hopping into my lap! I think the author infused the embodiment of joy and healing into her character which was the perfect balm to help bring Ryu back to the light.
Ryu is a complicated character who grows from antagonist into a hero throughout the book. Some leaps were a bit sudden, but overall his development made sense and fit with the story. His character dealt with the tumultuous emotions of juggling his loyalty to his family, his kingdom, and the woman he comes to love. There was a weight and darkness weighing on him, and I think the brightness Mellie brought to his life was the perfect fit for their romance.
I highly recommend Of Tides and Treason as an intriguing story that keeps the reader wholly entertained. I eagerly await the next book in the series focusing on the elf prince, Vendar. I am interested to see where else his story will go!
Constance Lopez has become one of my favorite fantasy authors of all time. I love all the creatures of this world she is creating and how they work with the various characters starring in each of the books. It's so hard to pick a favorite amongst them all, we are talking tidefoxes, starmartens, flamewolves and dragons here. My only disappointment is that the next book starring Isa's brother, Vendar is still being written. I have to wait for the next journey.
Of Tides and Treason has one character introduced in the beginning I was sure I would hate. But by the end of the story, this character undergoes big changes. And he is paired with one of my favorite characters of all time. A character who is essentially what many would call, a beastmaster. I found myself a little jealous, as I would love to have such an ability in our own world. (although we kind of can - with cats, dogs, birds, snakes and all the other more domestic creatures to an extent) Reading this book made me feel like a kid again, in all the best ways. Lopez's writing is full of adventure, found family, fuzzy/feathered creatures, hope and joy.
The clean romance continues to be top-tier, I've never seen better written and it deserves all the praise it receives. More fantasy fans need to be reading Constance Lopez's works, they are currently, little hidden gems.
An epic story that will captivate you with two people who go from enemies to friends and even though their backgrounds are ones that would mark them forever opposed to each other, once each sees the other truly as they are, they find they have found that person they’ve been looking for!
It’s a story of deception, of trickery, of magic and magical animals! It’s also a story of a slow romantic attachment which grows between these two main people who start out hating each other because of preconceived notions and ideas but see that those ideas are misguided as they get to know each other better.
Loyalties are tested and hard decisions must be made as the book races towards its conclusion! This book is a real page turner and you’ll probably be burning a little midnight oil because you’ll find it hard to put down- I know that’s how it was for me! I was so caught up in Mellie and Ryu’s story I forgot it was fictional! They seemed so real to me as I read about them!
I enthusiastically recommend this book as one I throughly enjoyed and as such I believe you will as well! If you’re looking for a well written story, with believable characters get this book and then tell your family and friends to read it as well!
Of Tides and Treason is a powerful fantasy romance that is clean and wholesome, and all together a delightful read. This is the first book I’ve read by Constance Lopez, and I’m quite impressed and looking forward to reading the rest of her work. The world is fleshed out and intriguing, and I felt very immersed while reading. The fantasy is unique with different types of magic as well as the many delightful creatures. Additionally, the characters are well developed and believable, even the antagonists. Of course, the star of the show is the romance. I appreciate the clean nature of the writing, as well as the exhilarating thrill of the developing connection between the main characters. I especially enjoyed how love helped each of them to grow. To help them see different ways forward while being more compassionate to those around them. As the book demonstrates, love can be a tidal wave that changes the fate of hundreds. After finishing Of Tides and Treason, I find myself yearning for more and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of Constance’s work. This story is a clean fantasy romance full of wonder, love, compassion, and joy, and is backed up by solid writing and a well constructed world.
Another beautiful story by Lopez, Of Tides and Treason took me by surprise—in a good way. Yes, I have read and loved the other books. And yes, I believed it would be a good read. But I guess I didn’t believe it would be quite this good. From start to finish, I was enamored of the characters and the plot.
Tides is a standalone, but I would suggest reading the others first for maximum enjoyment. There were occasional cameos, as well as allusions to happenings from previous books. Many of these little scenes opened the door for some simply stellar wit, and I have so many highlights. This third installment in the Kasmian Chronicles will certainly be revisited by me in the future.
Violence: Definitely PG-13 or above. Above. Go with above. It’s not that the book itself is filled with violence, or that the violence overrides the redemption and sweetness of the story, but it’s there. And some might find it disturbing.
Romance: So good the whole way through. I could have wished a certain scene toward the end was toned down a bit, but with the book as a whole standing how it is, I’m okay with it. And just to be clear, this scene is still well within the parameters of “clean;” it is just a wee bit more than the typically Disney princess kiss at the end of an old film.
I was in love with this book from the minute I picked it up. Ryu is an intriguing torn character, hating magic but hating seeing his land die more. We met him in the previous book but he was all villian there, here we get to see a few more aspects of his character. Melle was an instant hit with me especially with her having an affinity with animals. My new favourite animals are now Flamewolves and I demand the art they be real and I get to have at least 1 as a companion. The story takes us on a journey to being what you need to be in order to do what must be done and the discovery of thinking for yourself and not taking what we are taught as finite.
I couldn't read this quick enough although other things kept interrupting me reading time. The reverie between the main characters was perfect and the enemies to lovers arc was such a slow burn you just wanted to knock some sense into them.
As always Constance weaves a story that is truly mesmerising and leaves you longing for more tales to be told.
I received an ARC copy and I'm leaving my review voluntarily xx
Okay, so honestly I wasn't expecting to love this story as much as I did. It felt like nothing could follow the previous book with Liam's story. But I was so taken by Ryu and Mellie's story! I LOVED the animals, Ryu's friend, and how impressively terrifying his mom was as the villain.
Watching Ryu gradually, gradually, and so so realistically change was so freaking good! I couldn't stop reading, and that was the main reason! I don't think I've ever been unable to put a book down because of character development before, but I couldn't wait to see what happened next and how he'd respond! SUCH a great character with an immensely satisfying arc!
I will say that the end wrapped up FAST—like, too fast. I don't feel like I got quite enough resolution for this story. I'm also confused because there was a person mentioned briefly who showed up during the climax, but no one looked into who she was or talked or even thought about her again. Perhaps the author was going for mystery, but it felt more like the character was forgotten immediately after she was mentioned.
Great book, surprisingly engaging story, and definitely recommend it! Am looking forward to the next one!
I continue to be grateful that I am able to read this author's outstanding works. I love the stories she writes even when it is outside my normal reading. Mellie has run from an engagement and is hoping to lead a quiet life in the woods with her animals and her magic. She chose Arn as her destination knowing no one would look for her there due to the persecution of mages that goes all the way to the high sovereign. Unfortunately she has been seen with a tidefox which is Arn's kindred animal and that paired with her flamewolves brings her to the attention of the sovereign heir. The land in Arn is sick and he is looking for a way to heal it and believes because she has a relationship with a tidefox that she can help. They are not friends and seem to be enemies until they get to know each other and the story develops further. I absolutely adore this series and I cannot wait to read the next installment Of Monsters and Mercy. What will happen with Mellie and Ryu? You will have to pick up a copy to find out!! Highly recommended!!
