Suspected Charmed and Dangerous: Midlife Magic in Marshmallow Books 1-3

Save the world, or burn it down trying.

Newly-divorced Remi has been swallowing her rage and playing nice and for far too long. But every woman has her breaking point. And when she snaps, she ignites.

Because magic attracts magic, that fire spreads into an inferno of magical awakenings. Now instead of one middle-aged witch with no idea how to handle her magic, the little town of Marshmallow has three.

Sure, they may be a hot mess of renegade sorcery, but they’re not just powerful. They’re empowered. They’re done playing by other people’s rules and they’re writing their own.

1. Divorce bites. It’s worse when your ex is a vampire.
When quiet rage burns so bright you spontaneously combust, things can still get worse.
Turns out, fighting fire with fire is satisfyingly cathartic.
Burn it all down. Forge your own path from the ashes.

2. Dreams really do come true. But so do nightmares.
Being a single mom means you have to be prepared for everything. You have to be able to do everything. But nothing can prepare you for magic that activates while you’re asleep.
A positive bedtime routine is clutch.

3. He went from "I do" to "Who are you?"
When your AWOL husband finally returns but pretends his memory is still missing, life can't get much worse.
Unless you also turn into a chicken. A literal one. With feathers and the whole clucking shebang.
Peck the patriarchy.

Midlife meltdowns lead to newfound friendship, hilarious hijinks, and mounting mayhem. Each magical crisis is a new beginning, a chance to find love and the happily-ever-afters these forty-year-old heroines never thought possible. This bundle contains the first three novels in the Midlife Magic in Marshmallow Sweatpants and Spells, Scrapbooking the Supernatural, and Wrinkles and Runes.

Book 1 - Sweatpants and Spells
I borrowed the boxset from Kindle Unlimited but I'm reviewing each book separately as I read it.

This book opens at the wedding of Remedy 'Remi' Todd's stepdaughter Maude. With her best friend Jen, she is just counting the minutes until she can safely escape the torture of being in the same room as her ex-husband Richard and his new wife, Natalia. We quickly learn Richard is a misogynist and Remi didn't fit the bill as a compliant wife. This whole scenario blows up as Remi is leaving the wedding and is accosted by her ex. What happens here traumatic and totally unexpected.

Injured and traumatized Remi manages to escape the clutches of her ex and his wife. She finds she is still in town and is working her way towards home when Jen and her son Evan find her. After seeing what happened and defining Richard as a vampire, they take her to the emergency room.

The nurse Julian is just one of the people that we meet who will make an impact on Remi's life.

Jen sticks with Remi after she's discharged. In keeping with the vampire thing there's garlic, wooden stakes and crosses involved in decorating both Remi and her apartment door.

Remi wants to open her own bakery, she had given up that dream and had opened a restaurant with her ex. The restaurant she lives above. Now it's her time, it will be her bakery and she really would love to own the old Victorian House not far from where she currently lives. However, it's never come on the market.

Jen is a real estate agent and is surprised when the house comes on the market. The first thing she does is let Remi know. There is no question Remi is going to buy it and put her bakery on hold. That also means she'll need a job.

The next person she meets is an older woman she's going to try and just write off as full of nonsense. Then everything gets far more interesting.

I couldn't stop turning the pages, so much happens in this book as we get introduced to the players and this series. There's action, suspense, laughter, tears, romance and so much more!

Book 2 Scrapbooking the Supernatural
I borrowed the first boxset of this series from Kindle Unlimited and I am reviewing each book as I finish reading it.

If you haven't read the first book in this series. I suggest you go back and read it. The events of that book shape some things in this next one. In that book we met Remi the fire witch, her mate Julian, a dragon shifter, the life witch Molly and Jen, Remi's best friend, who is a dream witch.

This is Jen's book and let me tell you, reading about a dream witch is challenging. You don't know if what you are reading is actually happening, a dream, a vision, or something else entirely. That said this book opens with Jen having difficulty sleeping. Isn't that always the way when you're overtired?

Only in chapter two we find it was a dream...and one that brings in that winged kitten creature that hatched at Remi's in the last book. So, as we go through the scenario, Jen decides not to repeat her actions as foretold and calls Remi. Remi stays the night, and they decide it's time to corner Molly and find out just what exactly that cat creature is.

The next day is Saturday and being in Real Estate it's not a day off for Jen. She gets to the office before her partner Jerry and manages to crush her coffee all down the front of her as she unlocks the door. We learn Jen keeps clothes pretty much everywhere she frequents since spilling tends to be a habit of hers.

When Jerry arrives, he's concerned how tired she looks and remarks on it. Even suggesting it's stress from the lack of clients. Jen isn't hurting for money thanks to the hoard they found in the last book, but the same wasn't true for Jerry. Jen does the only thing she can do. She gives Jerry the two listings she has giving the excuse she needs some time off and also reassures him she'll be back when things pick up again.

Jen is faced with a bit of a dilemma when her son Evan finds her home and asleep in the middle of a workday. He doesn't see the magic but she can't lie to him, so she shows him her stash from the hoard. He puts it down to LARPing and she lets it go at that.

Her next dream brings to life the vampire detective from the movie she watched with Evan. It also brings a new entity into her dreams.

When Molly misses their scheduled Sunday brunch, Jen goes looking for her. Instead, she only finds Fernando her blue cyclops ball companion. When she asks him about the winged cat, he runs off leaving her with no answers once again.

When she arrives home, her son's car is there. She's happy because she expected to be alone. While on the surface everything looks fine, there is something else going on.

For the first time, Jen deliberately calls upon her dream magic. She enters her son's dreamscape and follows a girl who says everyone there is Evan, until she finds him. But he fades before she gets to him. Instead, she finds herself in trouble and a familiar voice then helps her, then appearing as a pink wolf.

With Remi's help Jen tells her son about her being a witch, Remi and Molly also being witches and the coven they formed. The significance of the 'cat fairy' is still unknown and Molly is still missing. When she shows up, she has a few answers to the 'cat fairy' but all are speculation.

There's also Brianna who shows up in this book briefly. She's still in denial that she's a witch and part of their Coven.

There are many twists in this book, and I couldn't stop turning the pages until I had the answers. I really love the romance aspect in this book. It was truly a surprise and Molly's reaction was very interesting.

I am enjoying this series, it's a bit different from the others I've read.

Book 3 - Wrinkles and Runes
I borrowed this book as a box set from Kindle Unlimited, I am reviewing each book as I read it.

If you haven't read the previous books in this series, I suggest going back and doing so. There are things that carry over that enhance the story lines.

At the end of the last book, Brianna, still proclaiming she's not a witch and not part of the coven turns into a chicken and runs off. The full scenario of how she came to be in that state is revealed in beginning of this book.

This book opens with Brianna at the restaurant, dealing with an unruly child then hiding in a supply closet when more things go wrong. Nancy, her father's right-hand person seeks her out for help getting things under control. The dishwasher is acting possessed, when in actuality it had be loaded with the wrong soap and was spewing water and bubbles everywhere as it danced across the kitchen with mechanical roars. While Brianna gets the power cut, Nancy clears the restaurant of staff and patrons. They sit and have something to eat discussing what to do next. Brianna sends Nancy home, but she is going to call their repair person as well. Brianna decides she needs to take a walk before doing the cleanup. That's when she ends up a chicken...

Turning back to normal, yet still in denial about the whole magic thing, Brianna slips into her bedroom through the window to avoid being seen in her current state. She falls asleep and when she wakes it's dark, she slept the afternoon away and still has to clean up the restaurant.

We now learn what circumstances Brianna left when she came to Marshmallow to care for her father and keep his restaurant running. Her father's caregiver offers her dinner before she heads out, but she declines. She has to walk since her car is still at the restaurant.

Having Molly tell her she could help her dad with magic totally freaks Brianna out. She flees into the mess of the restaurant and cleans with a frenzy.

Just as she finishes, Nancy calls to tell her Mr. Fixel is on his way. When he arrives, Brianna gets a shock. It appears Mr. Fixel is her husband Davey. However, he has no memory of her.

This is the beginning of an interesting relationship. Things begin to happen quickly from here. From her father's illness to new magical creatures to learn about and get rid of. Then there's Briana's stubborn refusal to accept anything magical, including herself.

A fun read with many twists and a few surprises as well. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

3 books following middle aged women discovering magic in the small town of Marshmallow, which set off a series of magical misadventures with a quirky cast of characters.

Here's what I didn't like: the romances. They felt tossed in to keep up a certain standard in this genre. The 3rd book only really had a good one, and even then, it just wasn't ticking any of my boxes. Aside from book 3, the story and plot would've remained the same for the most part. the guys barely had an impact. The pickle swearing. I did a lot of eye rolling whenever it popped up.

Here's what I liked: some lines caught me off guard and I'd laugh out loud. I liked the friendship and women supporting other women, the imagination behind it.

Overall, this was a stress-free read and it didn't push me closer to a book slump, but it didn't break me out of the funk either.

Enjoyable and different

So I binge read the first box set on three books on my kindle in a couple of days. I love the interweaving of characters from book to book. I adore having middle aged female leads that are discovering themselves as well as discovering magic. If you like fairly light hearted fantasy with interesting characters I think you'll enjoy these books.

I loved the first book of the three.

I really enjoyed the first book. The characters are all very different and interesting but the shenanigans in the second and third felt like a whole lot of filler. And some of it was beyond silly, just not silly funny. I wish the writer luck in her endeavors.

Good deal for three books

The first book is my favorite out of the three in this box set. All three books are full of action, comedy and a hint of romance. The heroines in the books are bad***. Demi is my favorite lead character while I don't much care for Molly.
