The images are interesting, and I like that the reader is shown how to make each letter, not just what the letters are. But 3 of the letters are depicted with items that don't start with the letters in question. The I page uses words in which I is in the middle: it highlights pIgs and also includes pIn, pInk, and rIbbon. The N page uses words in which N is the last letter: it highlights lioN and also includes raccooN, ribboN, lemoN, greeN, browN, faN, mooN, caN, and spooN. The X page uses words in which X is the last letter, too: it highlights foX and also includes boX, aX, waX, siX. Now I know it can be hard to find words that begin with X, let alone ones that will be recognizable items for young children, but I isn't nearly as difficult and N isn't difficult at all.
A different concept in ABC books as in the illustrations Emberley shows how to from/draw the letter across the double page spreads using four segment of panels across the two pages. As in his for Jen we see in the beginning panel the hen beginning to line up the straw to form the capital H. Emberley’s illustrations are always detailed and these are no exception. All the letters are formed by an animal. I especially enjoyed the illustration for M featuring mice forming the letter m within a block of Swiss cheese. Published in 1978 this title is a very look in alphabet books than what is published today. Give children a visual feast for the eyes in this animal ABC. Good for sharing between parent and child.
This book is one of the grooviest kid's illustration books i've ever come across. I love it so much. I found a hardbound copy at a thrift store some years ago. It's printed on lovely textured paper, the illustrations are clever and the colors look luscious. The negative reviews left here irk me. Ed if you're still alive and run into this somehow : thank you. Your art inspires me and brings me joy.
