A Throne and a Crown

Rate this book
King Renato Aratorre is missing.

Mathias and his husband were meant to be enjoying their hard-won happily ever after. But with Ren disappearing without a trace and dangerous trouble brewing in every corner of the palace, the weight of the Quarehian crown falls on the shoulders of the northerner king consort.

To make matters worse, there’s growing talk of the one thing that despite his best efforts, Mathias can never give to Ren and Quareh.

An heir.

Absolutely wonderful conclusion to Mat and Ren's story. Their final novella was ridiculously lovely, heartwarming and funny, packed with love, a smidge of angst, found family vibes and the right amount of kinky spice.
I loved seeing Mat step into his role of King Consort: it was a treat; he never loses his bratty, pig-headed attitude, but seeing how far he's come from the scared prisoner of the first book was absolutely priceless.
I'm going to miss being in his head.
Ren was as entertaining and flirty as ever, but he also shows a much more romantic and thoughtfully serious side to him here that I really appreciated.

I'm going to miss these two idiots quite a lot; and I'm going to miss the whole gang as well: from Starling and Parvan to Jiron and Luis and El; even some of the newest entries managed to carve a place inside my heart.
Also, some moments nearly brought tears to my eyes: what a wonderful conclusion to this series.

P.S.: I'd absolutely kill/sell my soul (or some non vital organs) for El's story, and his own shot at happiness. It would be soooooo cool to be in his head; he's such a badass and I think he'd really shine as a protagonist *please, please, please*

One last adventure to wrap up Mat and Ren's love story.

When get some of the usual hot and passionate sexy times between these two, and an apparent mystery of where Ren has seemingly disappeared to.

And it wraps up their story with an even more complete bow than we got in the main novels. We get to see Mat seeing some future visions of him and Ren as well as some others he's not actually present for - so we get to see a quick future peak at Jiron and Wyatt real quick as well, which was nice to see - and so we get a more complete picture of how their HEA will go.

And the way this ends perfectly sets them up for a lasting, secure legacy as rulers of a country together, and changing things for the better.

This might have been close to 200 pages, but it did not feel like it in the least. It was such an easy, quick read with Mat and Ren being perfectly Mat and Ren, and even when they're apart for a majority of this, it worked because all energy was put into finding Ren.

I also was a tad worried that

I was so happy with this addendum to the series, really ironing out any lingering questions we might have had and truly securing their HEA with a perfect bow.

Highly recommend if you've read and loved this series. It's just the perfect addition to the series and wraps it all up wonderfully.

Can't wait for more from this lovely author! 😍

I love these two so much. I love them so much I’m willing to read BDSM for them. This wrapped up the series so nicely, and I’m glad they got the ending they did, I guess. Better them than me!

What a wonderful way to wrap up the series, it feels far more complete now than it did after book 4. It's a great glimpse into the real love that Ren feels for Mat and the uncertainties he hides from everyone else, despite his regularly too obnoxious presence. The snippets of future happenings were so good, and written in a unique way fitting the whole series.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️/5

👥 : What a joy to see again these characters I love so much… Ren and Mat are, as always, funny, petulant and endearing. They act with their heart and not their mind and that’s why we like them.

💞: THEY ARE PERFECT TOGETHER, since the beginning. I’m so happy to see them happy together, exploring their desires and being there for each other. The love they share is so powerful.

🪶: Can we talk about this end ? Sorry I need a tissue, so many tears. It was an emotional goodbye. I will miss them.

🗒: « My dear Nathanael Mathias Velichkov Aratorre, brightest light of my soul and deepest core of my heart. » CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE LETTER PLEASE ?

You need to read this if you have read the previous books in this series, and if not, you need to read all this series RIGHT F**KING NOW !!!

✨I received an ARC the author for this book and I’m very grateful for it, but this is obviously my honest review.✨

I don't know if I ever encountered a more lovable couple than Ren and Mat. They just make me smile. Like, the entire time. Even when they are in dire situations. I love their banter, their snark and humor. Some authors go way overboard with sassy characters, making it more like a gimmick and very tiresome to read. Not Adelaide. She makes you fall in love with her characters, makes you feel their emotions and live, laugh, love and cry with them.

As this is a novella after the last book in this series, it's on the shorter side and takes place in a short amount of time. Even so, I loved reading more about Mat and Ren. I thought it was specifically great to read a bit more about the changes they have wrought for their country and people, but also the problems they keep facing.

I would recommend reading the free short novella about Jiron/Wyatt before this book, as that takes places before this story.
It was great to see some more familiar faces and get to know a bit more about their HEA/HFN.

Even though this story is on the shorter side, there us a lot of heartache/action and suspense going on before our MC's continue having their HEA.
Overall, a very lovely read and I can't wait to see what Adelaide comes up with next!

The book is written from Mat's and Ren's POV (mostly Mat), 1st person.
There is no cheating/sharing.
There are BDSM/kinky moments. (Yeah!)
There are some content warnings which you check in the beginning of the book.

Omg the perfect ending! In this novella, Ren goes missing and Mat has to find him - we get cameos from all the characters we’ve loved in the series, plus some glimpses of their future from the Sight.

Also, *spoiler* we get to see Mat & Ren’s future with their adorable adopted daughter! Aaaahhhh so cute!!

What’s better than an epilogue about beloved characters we’re struggling to let go of? An extended epilogue about beloved characters we’re struggling to let go of!
Although the ending to book four was already pretty satisfying, I couldn’t wait for this little sneak peek into our favorite characters’ future and the author truly delivered. I feel like this brings us full closure as this novella touches upon every single thing I’ve loved about the whole series. It was fun, kinky, moving and everything I wanted it to be.
Saying my eyes were dry until the end would be a shameless lie because the ending got me very emotional, but I’m so grateful we had these final moments with them. What a ride this had been, thank you a million times to the author for allowing me to be an arc reader for this series, I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Did this epic series need an extended epilogue? Probably not, because we already got to see the events that truly mattered to guarantee Ren and Mat’s happily ever after. They are married, Ren is the undisputed ruler of his kingdom, and events have been put in motion toward gender and sexual equality across the entire continent. However, a happily ever after doesn’t mean that life stops, and I’ll never be mad at more glimpses of some of my favorite characters. This novella, which includes healthy doses of the spice, snark, and political intrigue I loved from the main series, gives us a good look into the struggles Ren and Mat experience in ruling while maintaining a relationship plus a few residual consequences of the actions they took in the grand finale of the previous book.

The story opens with all the attitude and spice we know and love from these two men. Blaike leaves us with more than bonus smut, however, as this day out of the lives of Ren and Mat devolves into Mat doing what Mat does best…pissing off everyone around him and then saving the day through his stubbornness. The initial mood of their day shifts when Mat is thrown into a political situation he doesn’t love but still does his best to navigate as Ren’s representative; then, as more information is gathered, the danger escalates quickly. Initially, it’s unclear whether all events are connected, but luckily Mat has all the loyal guards (and a certain gardener) we know and love to support him.

Despite the presence of magic in this world, Blaike has never fallen into the trap of using it as the ultimate problem-solver (and even notes a handful of times when it caused more problems than solutions). For this last time out, though, Mat’s ability serves as a clever vehicle to let readers see far into the future of not only Mat and Ren but also many of the secondary characters we’ve grown attached to. The action and plot of this novella are essentially the framing device for the true epilogue that does show the long-term happily ever after for our favorite king and his bratty consort.

If you enjoyed the main series, this is absolutely a follow-up you won’t want to miss. And if I haven’t already yelled at you online that you should read these phenomenal fantasy romance books, consider this yet another strong recommendation. I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready to truly leave this world, but I’m also already excited for Blaike’s next project.

I have so many feelings. This was the final book, a novella rounding off what has been a truly epic series. It was bittersweet. I think it should be clear why I felt that way, especially if you’re a reader embarking on the fifth (sixth?) book (tale?) in the Riehse Eshan world.

Now.. I might get lynched for saying this because I adore Mat. But I think this book made me realise I love Ren a little more. There’s something about his love, possessiveness and protectiveness over Mat. There’s something about his bouncing good humour and lust for life. There’s something about… _him_ that is so utterly captivating. In the chapters he was in, he really shone like the brightest light.

Not to say that Mat isn’t a beautiful and wonderful character. Like I just said, adore him. But I really felt the fact that Ren wasn’t around for most of the book. I missed him sorely, and I craved his presence.

Plot. Wow. This is not a long story (though it is longer than I thought we were getting). But compared to the other books int he series, this is short. The plot does not lose out though. It is fast-paced and so very, very intense. I had palpitations when the ante was upped. Oh gods was I on the edge of my seat with worry and fear for my beloved Ren and Mat. Gah.

The thing about this story is that it doesn’t fill me with confidence that Ren and Mat will ride off into the sunset for their happily ever after. King and his Consort? They are targets forever… and I hate thinking that way because I remember telling Adelaide a few months back just how much I was desperate for Ren to become king. I feel like… be careful what you wish for, is all I can say.

I’m beyond horrified that I will never explore the lives of Ren and Mat for the first time again. They’ve been such a staple in my existence, knowing there was always more to come. I’m gutted it’s over, but I will not deny how excited I am for what is next in store from this author.

As always, many content warnings. Read them and do not pick up this book if they offend you. It’s really that simple. Though I would hope that anyone getting to book 4.5 would know what they’re letting themselves in for.

Mat and Ren are back, and I couldn't be more thrilled! Ren has gone missing and Mat, along with Ren's councilors, go to some extreme measures to find out who kidnapped their king. While he's gone, as the King's Consort, Mat has to attend to the citizen's appearances to help solve social issues and also avoids an assassination attempt, a mass murder, and endures the suspicions of Ren's councilors.

After learning that the councilors had recently angered Ren by bringing up the creation of an heir (which Mat can't provide, of course), Mat forces himself into having visions in order to find Ren. Most of the visions end up being far in the future, in which we see some happily-ever-afters of some of the more well-known characters in the series.

As expected, the story is full of amusing, witty conversation and inner monologue, with a sprinkling of filthy spiciness to even everything out ;)

This novella turned out to be just as good as the series and a perfect wrap-up with its own full storyline. Ren is missing and Mat is temporarily in charge of the kingdom until he is located. The Council and guards fear that Ren has been abducted as an important foreign delegation is due the next day.

In this book, danger and mystery lurk. Ren and Mat also have their kinky S/M passionate encounters. As the court complains that Ren will have no heir while married to a man, a man they don't fully trust, Ren finds their concern despicable and unacceptable. A feature I especially like about this book is that it provided the information typically found in an epilogue, but incorporated it neatly in the book. It's a truly engaging story with some of the friends and family found in the series. Highly recommended.

Mat and Ren are back with more dangerous adventures. I can't get enough of this couple so I was glad there's another book after the final book in the series. And of course, this book, A Throne and a Crown didn't disappoint at all.

I loved it! I was sent an ARC of this last glimpse into Ren and Nat's life and truly enjoyed it. The content was light enough while still in line with what sort of thing we've come to expect in the world Blaike created.

In all, I felt like this was a perfect bow to tie the series up with. If you've read the others in the series there's absolutely no way you should miss this, and say a proper goodbye to Riese Eshan!

This is my unbiased review of an ARC version of this book!

Sweet silly add on story, was fun to see Mat/Nat get more into the court life and see how it's going after a while of being in power as Kings. I know the point of the story is Ren is missing but I did miss him a lot.
