The town of Devon, population 1000, has been invaded by cats. Thousands of cats of all types flood the streets, causing a nuisance to the townsfolk. One night, when one of their own is killed coming home from work, the town's inhabitants snap. All but for Tara. A special little girl with a big heart. When the people fight back in vicious packs, she sets out to brave the violent mobs and rescue the cats. But not all in Devon is as it seems. Why do the people suddenly devolve into lunacy? Why do their eyes glow red in the dark? And just what is at the source of this invasion?
Full disclosure, I was just expecting a book with rabid cats licking people’s skin off. Maybe some ‘pussy’ jokes, too. This was like an entirely different experience. Demons and otherworldly cat kings and a possessed town? And a little girl that just wanted to help these delightfully evil animals. Creepy, right? I’ve been a cat owner for a great number of years and always suspected them to be evil. They just watch you with those eyes…judging, plotting…and it’s just a matter of time before they break something or scratch at your furniture. Little, mischievous bastards. So Brian Berry really took a deep dive into some unique lore here and made a terrifying story. I loved it. The usage of the cats was great and the supporting cast, including Tara and her doofus brother, just added some great depth to everything. You really felt like the stakes were high through their personalized experiences during all the turmoil. Blood, terror, and cats. Boo-ya! One of Berry’s best outings, by far.
Don't we all know the situation, when you lose your heart to a hungry cat, and the second you feed it, more shows up, and before you know it, you are infested with an ancient entity of lust for blood and havoc?
Cats by Brian Berry - or Becker Against Evil would be appropriate to call it - was a blast. Beginning somewhat rather calmly quickly taking a turn for the worse riding a typhoon of madness and chaos fueled by Berry's poetic 80s small town language with slang you didn't knew you missed (or simply didn't knew at all) in all the appropriate places.
I recommend this sweet story to everyone who doesn't have a a trigger in life. If you do have triggers, they'll probably be part of the story.
Pros: 1. Fantastic book cover. 2. Expertly written. 3. Highly imaginative. 4. I like how Brian G. Berry used the weather to add to the horror.
Cons: 1. Profanity and blaspheming. 2. This book would benefit from keener editing. 3. Cats needs to be proofread. 4. The ending is partially unrealistic. I do not want to spoil it for other readers. 5. I won't re-read this book. 6. I don't like Eddie.
This book is worth a read if you're into cats and horror.
When Brian G. Berry initially released Cats, I was excited for what I thought would be his take on a classic killer cat story and feeling like an homage to vintage Guy N. Smith schlock.
But man was I wrong.
Instead Cats is Tim Curran meets Richard Laymon meets Graham Masterton meets Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard with a bit of Adam Neville thrown in for good measure. It’s The Purge meets The Thing and thrown into a blender with The Pariah for a bit of spiciness. It’s a bonkers story and it’s awesome.
Insanely fast paced, ridiculously descriptive, full of action and violence and the relentless dread of eldritch horrors that only Berry could fathom and put to paper.
Berry’s skill is easily at its best here and while he’s known for his splatterpunk and extreme horror books, it’s ones like these, where excessive blood and guts take a back seat to the existential dread of forces beyond our control, that’s when Berry shines.
Like I said, I went into this one expecting one thing and ended up reading a story that kept me glued to my seat for 3 hours and blew me away both in scope and in cosmic horror.
While not quite a 5 star read for me( the animal cruelty was a bit much to get through, as was some of the Laymon-esque scenes of debauchery), it comes pretty damn close. I can’t deny this is, once again, Berry at the top of his game and yet another story to add to his “best of” lists.
An invasion of cats on a small town leads residents on a homicidal rampage killing and torturing all cats. And a little girl and a deputy are all the town needs to rescue the cats from the crazed town. Another epic book from Brian Berry.
This is an epic cosmic tale, nothing like you'd expect and at the same time, so much more!! Also, it's a horror book, called CATS, about cats, so obviously cats are going to get hurt. If that's not your thing, don't read it!! If you CAN, however, distinguish fact from fiction, and want a brilliantly horrific horror read that will grip you in its cat-like claws and not let you go, that will hold you entranced until the final full-stop, then grab yourself a copy! Maybe curl up with your cat whilst you read it, like I did! And remember, cats are wiley, devious, clever creatures who can hold their own! 💜
Greg is an intimidating gentle giant, on his way home to the quiet little town of Devon, when things take a disastrous turn, and it seems, this is only the tip of the iceberg for the town and its inhabitants….
The cats are slowly but surely taking over and the townspeople have had enough, it's time to fight back and put a stop to this. But some were warned of the animals' arrival, yet they chose to do nothing, and now, of course, it's too late!
Tara is a young girl, with a heart of gold (or is it purple?) She feels she has been chosen to protect the cats and determines that is exactly what she is going to do. Especially when she starts to discover the lengths the townspeople are willing to go to rid themselves of the ferocious felines. The townspeople have formed their own brutal alliances against them, and anyone who gets in their way.
The Black Cat King has arrived and he wants blood, a lot of blood! But when the town decides to fight back, the people start to change. The way they act, even the way they look, like somethings gotten into them. Something insane! And what has Dagons Meadow got to do with what's happening? The meadow that children are warned to stay away from and even the adults fear! The whole town has turned into lunatic savages, unstoppable and merciless, determined to unleash as much blood as possible! It's pure CATastrophic carnage!
This story goes from 0 to 100 in seconds and doesn't let up. Such a fluid narrative that pulls you along willingly with it, brilliantly vivid descriptions that make you feel a part of everything, it's completely immersive. I'll be hearing those screams, both human and feline, in my nightmares for a long time to come….
Do you like cosmic horror? Do you like cats? Do you hate cats? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you should read Cats by Brian G Berry.
There’s an evil in Devon and whether or not it’s the swarming cats that have invaded the town or the townspeople themselves is yet to be determined.
This book is full on cosmic horror with some extreme aspects and the flowing lyricism Brian G. Berry is known for. Well written with believable characters and a lovable little girl, Tara who is just trying to help the kitties. This book shows how easy it is for a group of people to spiral out of control and the evils the madness of crowds can do.
As if you needed another reason to pick up this book, Brian G. Berry forwent all proceeds to go to help Billy Bear the cat with his chemo treatment.
Might seem obvious but TW for graphic descriptions of cat abuse/murder.
I really love cats and find that I enjoy horror movies based on them (seriously Sleepwalkers is one of my faves!) so I was super excited for this. It did not dissapoint it was a wild ride from start to finish and it was about so much more then cats.
Highly recommend if you want a fast action packed read!
