James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.
Very cute book! I would get this book for my classroom or child. This book is about kindness and would be a great way to discuss how to be a good friend.
Pete the Cat is back and he is grooving down the street on the way to get a treat from the ice cream truck. Along the way Pete encounters several friends who need his help. Pete knows the right thing to do, but he is worried about missing out on the treat he's been looking forward to. Does Pete do the right thing? Of course he does!
Fans will rejoice in the familiar rhythmic, rhyming, predictable text that makes Pete the Cat books so much fun to share out loud. The bright illustrations draw young readers in and may inspire art of their own. Pete knows, ""It's cool to be kind,"" and who doesn't want to share that message in their own family, classroom, or community?
Pete the Cat Screams for Ice Cream by Kimberly and James Dean is about how Pete is so excited about the ice cream truck, but he has a few stops along the way to help out his friends. This book displays that helping our friends is kind! Even a small chat, or helping a friend or classmate clean up are small but meaningful ways to be kind to others. Along with this great message, there is constant rhyming and a bit of alliteration that can be pointed out to show figurative language and literary devices being represented in cool books! This could be an awesome reading book for centers (the students could listen to the story being read and reading from the hard copy at the same time)! Favorite quote: "Ice cream is cool, but what's cooler than that? Taking your time to be one KIND cat!"

Ice cream storytime! This was my final book (I started with Elephant and Piggie) and as usual the younger kiddos were starting to get restless by this point. I keep toying with the idea of just doing 2 books for "Family Storytime" since we get such a wide range of ages (toddlers who can barely walk all the way up to 8 year olds begrudgingly tagging along!). By book 3 most of them can barely keep it together and I lost count of how many times I said "sit down on your bottom!"
This one is cute, but I like the ones with songs a little better - gets the kids involved, especially for the final book when they're getting squirrely.
My biggest complaint about the plot is that Pete foregoes his personal desire in order to spend 6 hours meeting the needs of 3 friends he happens to pass along the way. It's cool to be kind, but, hey, also take care of yourself. I also think there's a huge missed opportunity to help kids learn how to tell time, since it's so important to the story. Put a big clock in the corner of each page. Make Pete's tiny watch much bigger, so the reader can see the numbers on every page. I'm not sure if the language will land with kids, and I'm personally not really into the Grateful Dead / groovy vibes.
I felt that this book was a very positive, exciting story that was full of tons of vibrant colors that would excite the readers, and draw them in. The book is about a cat named Pete who is excited to go on a journey to get an ice cream treat, Pete had heard that an ice cream truck was coming and he couldn't go back. I found a lot of the phrases said in this book as very memorable and catchy. I would recommend the book to anyone who likes positive, cute stories.
In this upbeat, rhyming story, Pete the Cat is very excited to visit the ice cream truck. However, on his way, Pete encounters several friends who need his help. Pete doesn't want to miss getting ice cream, but he realizes that he needs to help his friends first because it's always cool to be kind.
Messages include putting another's needs ahead of our own wants, helpfulness, patience, and managing time.
Not my favorite Pete the Cat book but still really cute. This has a great message about not being in a rush and taking the time to be kind. It's a little too saccharine for me but Pete the Cat fans will enjoy it! It's actually less about ice cream than one would think based on the title haha
I received an electronic ARC from Harper Collins through SLJ Picture Book Palooza July 2024. Pete is back and reminding readers it's important to be kind. He is on a mission to get to the ice cream truck but recognizes he needs to be there for his friends along the way. I like the refrain of "You're one kind cat!" and how it changes to remind readers they all need to be kind to finish the story.
Pete the Cat is on his way to get some ice cream and must meet the Just Chillin ice cream truck on time. With each step he takes, he stops to help a friend along the way, and thinks he will be late to meet the ice cream truck. But to Pete the Cat's surprise he learns a valuable lesson.
One more scoop of hackneyed drivel about Pete and his chums being kind to add yet another title to this NYT “bestselling” series solely for profit. The illustrations might be appealing to younger readers or fans of Dean’s style.
I read this one to a sweet group of Preschoolers for "Read Across America" week, and it was such a cute, fun read, and I love the message of how like ice cream, friendship and kindness are always "cool."
Pete Is excited because it’s the day that the ice cream truck comes by and he can’t wait! Because Pete is kind he stops to help each of his friends, and risks not getting his ice cream. He knows it’s cool to be kind.
I do like this one more than some of the other newer Petes! I fear some of them just don't have the same magic as the first few, but this one does flow well enough and fits well with summer storytimes (or just as a summer read in general).
Read this for our weekend story time and the kids absolutely loved it. Definitely a great read aloud book, and perfect for the summer. Love the message about making time for the people you care about. Pete is one groovy cat.
