Hive Mind #5

Adversary

Rate this book
Being a telepath means being a warrior.

Eighteen-year-old Amber is the youngest of the five telepaths who protect the hundred million citizens of one of the great hive cities of twenty-sixth century Earth. As her city celebrates the start of a New Year, one of the other telepaths must stop work to have lifesaving surgery.

Amber is already worried how she and her unit will cope with the increased workload, but then she finds herself facing twin enemies as well. Inside her city, Keith takes advantage of his increasingly powerful position as one of only four working telepaths. Outside her city, Hive Genex sends the devious Adversary Aura to lead their defence against charges of attempting to kidnap Amber.

While I enjoy this series immensely, and have been looking forward to this book, I can only rate it at 2/5.
This book... was all recap! There was no actual plot progression until after 45% through.
Most series eventually end up with a book that is mainly directed at setup for the next book. And this may be the case. But there was so much recap in this book that I might as well have read from book 1 again. But it didn't have the character asides we would have gotten along the way.
Will be anticipating the next release, hoping for an actual plot.

Amazing, can’t wait for book 6!

Having read and re-read the earlier books, I bought this one with some trepidation - would the writing, storyline and meet my admittedly high expectations? I’m pleased to confirm this book is everything I had hoped. I look forward to reading it over and over again as I wait for book 6!

One Word Review: Awesome! (If you don't know the series, I really recommend Book 1:Telepath)

Short Review: "Adversary" keeps the Hive Mind series rolling with a bang. It's all about relationships—family, friends, culture. Ms Edwards nails character growth while handing out out intense action scenes and some seriously tense confrontations. The plot ties up nicely, but there's a clear sign we're in for more. Can't wait!

Longer Review (no spoilers, promise!): So, in "Adversary," Janet Edwards dives into the complex world of relationships, especially during the critical New Year period. It's like catching up with old friends. The characters evolve, and it feels like you're right there with them.

When Ms Edwards puts the pieces of the plot puzzle together, it's like fireworks. Action scenes? Oh, they're top-notch, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Tense debates, Poirot style confrontations? Check. Every moment of this not only moves the story forward but also adds layers to the characters. It's like she's got this perfect recipe for blending action and character growth.

The wrap-up of the current plot is spot-on. You're left feeling satisfied (in my case almost euphoric), but Ms Edwards is cunning — there are clear signs that more world-building goodness is on the horizon in books yet to come.

"Adversary" just cranks up the excitement for what's next. Janet Edwards knows how to keep the momentum going in the Hive Mind series. After this, I'm back counting the days until the next instalment, but even more so than last time.

In a nutshell, "Adversary" rocks. If you're into characters you can care for and cheer for, heart-pounding action, and a a world that feels real and like a giant puzzle at the same time, this series is perfect. Seriously, dive in!

Note: This review was delayed due to me just not knowing how to get my feelings together - I am so invested in these characters. Janet Edwards is certainly my favourite author.

The book lost a star because everything was so easy.

Buzz was confronted with the murderer she saw as a child. However, she fixed herself "off-screen," though it did take a few days. Amber's Unit was about to be attacked, but Lucas figured everything out and stopped the slaughter before it started.

Then there was the climax of the book - Amber's confrontation with Joint Hive Enforcement and Hive Genex. And it went...nowhere. The reader knows what happened (since it was the climax of book 1) and knows Amber is telling the truth. I kept thinking that Adversary Aura had a trick up her sleeve that would throw Amber off, but none of that happened. Instead, Amber just did "Amber stuff" and it all worked out.

The story is good and the writing is (as usual) engaging. I just kept wishing for some kind of actual drama to happen.

I agree with many of the other reviews that the biggest problem with this book was that nothing much happened for the first 40%. And yet, I was still happy that there is finally a new book in this series.

the first part was pretty tedious, but it got exciting once the second plot line really kicked off. i was expecting the story to be a courtroom drama focused on the hive genex case and adversary aura, but we really only get like a couple of chapters of that. the real meat (and perhaps what the title of the book should have been) is Keith is A Cruel Asshole for 500 Pages. so sick of that man.

there are some exciting developments which we can look forward to exploring in the next book(s): lucas's family revelations, amber helping joint hive treaty enforcement with whatever issue they've been struggling with for over a year, and their hive possibly winning back all the kidnapped citizens and their descendants, including the true telepath.

had my usual gripes with the book/writing:
it's overly written. when people talk about a past incident or event, they'll explain/rehash the full context - despite everyone involved in the conversation already being familiar with the topic. and this happens every single time they discuss a thing, so it can't be explained away as a reminder for readers who didn't brush up on previous books before this one. this makes the dialogue unnatural and very tedious to read.

people are way too involved in each other's lives and will go into tmi levels of detail about their personal lives while in the middle of, say, actively chasing down criminals. please be serious.

the unexamined classism. amber (rightfully) often wonders whether the hive's policy of covering up criminal activity is right, but she never once questions the level system that dictates social class. everything in your life - from the quality of your clothing and electronic devices to your choice of life partners - is dictated by your level and there seems to be no social mobility after you go through lottery at 18. the way specific lower level characters are described is gross and patronizing. i'm just thankful that my critical thinking skills have developed enough that i can see the problem with this kind of stuff, because younger me certainly wouldn't have!!

anyway, i was left feeling this might be the last hive mind book i read, but if it takes ms janet edwards another 3 earth girl installments before she drops another hive mind book, i may miss the world enough to continue with the series.

This is another stunningly captivating book by Janet Edwards which I simultaneously never wanted to finish but also couldn't put down. The Hive Mind series has been my favorite book series for years and it hasn't lost its charm with the fifth part at all.
All the characters, the setting, the story feel like a second home to me and it's amazing how I can relate to the story in every situation I'm in. When I was younger, I could relate to the fears of Amber that came with life-altering changes as she went through Lottery and re-entering society at the same place but slightly different. And now: stress with work, colleagues that are so focussed on their own merit that it comes off as (or simply is) malicous but also the joy one can find when their in the right company and with their family.
Another part I loved about this book is Janet Edwards writing style. It shows the slightly different way if life in a Hive. The information-centered sentences and the different words just underline how we are in a different place at a different time. It's amazing! I 100% recommend this book and this entire series!

It was a while since I tucked into the previous books, so I was pleased the start of the book provided plenty of reminders as to who was what and allied with whom. However, if you’re looking for constant foot-to-the-floor action, then this isn’t for you. Amber and her team face a steady stream of threats as they struggle to maintain law and order in the very crowded environment of the Hive. But this book is as much about the daily routine and customs of this underground society, as it is about the adventure – which is fine with me. I like my science fiction full of worldbuilding, so long as it is sufficiently interesting and continues to revolve around the main characters and advances the storyline. And Adversary certainly ticked that box.

I thoroughly enjoyed the celebration and vivid descriptions of Amber’s reactions and feelings at a keynote celebration, which also added background and context to her character and reactions. It was also enjoyable to learn more about how certain members of her team were coping with the added pressure that was being put upon them. If there is any quibble – and it’s a relatively minor one – I did think the final denouement, which had quite a buildup, didn’t provide the gritted challenge I was expecting. However, I also recall that at the time of reading the book, I was simply relieved that the worst of the ordeal was over for poor Amber and her team.

I would just add that if you happen to pick this one up without having read any of the other books, you certainly won’t flounder. But if you don’t go back to the first book and read these stories in order, you’ll be missing out on watching characters develop in a highly enjoyable YA science fiction series that isn’t like anything else I’ve read. I was provided with a review copy of Adversary by the author, which in no way has influenced my honest, unbiased opinion.

Adversary was well worth the wait! There were even more moving parts in this book but they all came together beautifully. The storyline is as complex and multilayered as ever with all the characters facing unique and challenging battles.

Amber and her unit are faced with so many daunting issues all at once in Adversary. They’re all feeling the strain especially when there are complications in what should’ve been a straight forward case against Hive Genex. Everything is growing more and more complicated.

Buzz and Lucas are both forced to face their own traumatic pasts as Keith and his schemes get progressively more devious and cruel. Amber has to deal with attacks on those closest to her while also working with Hive Politics to fight for her hive.

Both Aura and Keith are powerful adversaries and Amber has to find a way to hold them both off while also working tirelessly to keep the hive from descending into anarchy. We really see Amber come into her own in Adversary as she fights to keep her world from falling apart.

The road from Telepath to Adversary is a long and endlessly twisting one but I love how the key elements of the series that made me fall in love with it still remain. The play by play of the emergency runs, Adika’s famous sarcasm, and Janet’s own witty humor.

I enjoyed the book, but it had several problems, the minor one is that there is quite a lot of repetitive discussion, for example;
The book starts with an investigation into a minor problem on the lower levels, but there is so much messing around by Amber’s over protective team that it takes ten chapters to actually get anywhere. The actual story content was barely enough to fill one, the rest was just Amber’s team telling her over and over again what she shouldn’t do. To be honest over half this book could be dumped without impacting the actual story.

My other problem is Keith, he is egotistical, incompetent and vindictive. He is also an uncontrollable sociopath verging on being fully psychopathic, who is far more trouble than he is worth. He is like a weapon that kills far more of its own soldiers than the enemy, even the stupidest general will eventually stop using the weapon. The author keeps banging on how vital Keith is to the Hive, but every piece of evidence she has supplied about Keith says he absolutely isn’t.
Keith is like the ‘Sword of Damocles’ hanging over the story and I just don’t understand why he hasn’t already been eliminated, I found this really, really annoying!!!

3 1/2 stars rounded up. A good comfort read, it was nice being back with Amber and her team again. Lots of tech speak in this one that I glossed over, but the relationships are solid, and I reluctantly accept that Edwards has justified why the series' main bad guy continues to menace everyone from a distance. My hive doesn't waste people, indeed. Sigh.

Although how he manages to find so much free time is a mystery. Possibly he just uses the same 24 hours as everyone else excessively well, like Taylor Swift.

At any rate, didn't adore this one but I was still happy reading it, and will look forward to the next adventure.

Another unquestionable hit!

I have been overwhelmed by the intuitive superiority of this series. Adversary has continued this tradition in spades. Ms. Edward's has said she has more books planned for this series. I can only hope her muse is as impatient as I am for the next one. If you want a brief comment, I would have to say, eminently sat eminently satisfying.

Very addictive and hard to put down! I read it in 3 days which is unusual for me for a book of almost 500 pages. I love the thorough world building in this whole series. It's really interesting to get a glimpse into the personalities, motivations, and histories of side characters, such as Amber's grandparents or Claire's old unit members. Great read overall!

Rather disappointing. The dialogue seems so stilted, and the ending was very dissatisfying. Essentially all problems were resolved in a 5 page window based on a new character that was setting up the next book/series. Oh well. I still like the world that the book takes place in.

I've been looking forward to this book for months--Janet Edwards is one of my favorite authors--but I was disappointed by this one. The first half of the book felt superfluous, with a lot of repetition of ground covered earlier in the series. Things finally started happening about halfway through, but even then the book title was misleading--the title character barely played a role in the book at all. (There was a real adversary, but it wasn't the character with that title.) This book was mostly recap with a bit of setup for the next book, with barely any story of its own. What independent story it contained would have been better off as a novella, or even as a couple of short stories. I'll keep reading the series in hopes that the next one gets back to the storytelling I've come to expect from Janet Edwards.
