I genuinely think this book came to me at the right time. The right questions were asked which I was struggling with, and I loved every second of it. It’s not only about “choosing yourself” but also about challenging yourself to be the version of yourself you want to be! It was very inspiring. The only downside I had was that over halfway of the book, it felt very repetitive. But all in all, I will come back to this book to read the annotations I made. Loved it!

Reading Choosing Me felt less like reading a self-help book and more like having a heartfelt conversation with someone who truly understands me. It felt as though Kelly Weekers was listening to my thoughts, reassuring me that everything will be okay, and gently guiding me towards choosing myself without making me feel guilty for it.

Since the author is a psychologist, her writing is incredibly thoughtful yet simple to understand. I loved how she talks about every aspect of life - family, friendships, relationships, self-worth, and the constant battle with our own thoughts. Rather than just giving advice, she explains why we feel the way we do and how we can handle those emotions while still choosing ourselves.

One idea that stayed with me throughout the book was that choosing yourself doesn't mean not choosing others. That message alone challenged so many beliefs that society often makes us accept as truth.

I also really appreciated the chapters on setting boundaries. They felt honest, relatable, and comforting. The book reminded me that the better I understand myself, the healthier and more meaningful my relationships with the people around me can become.

If you're in a phase where you're constantly doubting yourself, questioning your choices, or struggling to find your footing, I genuinely think this book can help. It doesn't promise to fix everything overnight, but it offers comfort, thoughtful questions for self-reflection, and gentle guidance that helps you understand yourself a little better.

By the end, it felt like I'd spent time talking to a therapist who truly understood what I was going through.

The informal style with which this book is written causes it to read more like advice one would get from an older sister, than from a detached mental health professional. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, in order to find it valuable, one needs to absorb the material from a perspective of complete honesty and self-awareness. That being addressed, I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone who might be going through a period of difficult transition or existential angst.

If you’re tired of keeping up a facade to survive in today’s world, this book is a savior. Many of us hide our true selves just to be accepted socially, physically, emotionally, and personally. ‘Choosing Me’ by Kelly Weekers helps you realise that seeking acceptance from society can be wrong.

The book is divided into three parts dedicated to the following: -

1) Know yourself better: how you were in the past and how to use your past to create a better future, how you are in the present and how you can improve yourself at the moment, what vision your future self holds, and how to be the person you want to be.

2) Being Yourself:- Why being yourself matters, how to let go of past traumas and how to deal with them, how you can embrace changes, how to stand up for yourself, the importance of self-love and how to trust your intuition.

3) Choosing Yourself: Why choosing yourself is better than waiting to get chosen by someone else, how to be your own best friend and elevate your relationship with yourself, how to establish a healthy relationship with others while you keep your stand, and how to be in your power.

This book is a self-help guide for the new generation and promotes the idea of why you should always choose yourself first. I personally liked this book. It's insightful and lets you know that life is not to be wasted trying to impress everyone. You live once, and hence, you should make sure you enjoy every bit of it. The vocabulary and writing style were extremely simple and friendly, which means you will feel like a close friend is giving you advice instead of reading a general self-help book. That's a plus point for this book.

The only factor I didn't like about this book is that it lacked depth and seriousness in sensitive matters like trauma, sharing and self-love.   It explained the concepts in a friendly way, yes, but you wouldn't find ways to cope with it. Just embracing it is not the solution. Although the author has mentioned various questions to help you get a better idea of yourself, which in turn helps with self-realisation, the book doesn't contain active roadmaps or tips and tricks for your self-growth.

Overall, this book is like a friendly journal, which lets you know that you are not alone and whatever happens is for your own good. It's empathetic and insightful. I would recommend it to anyone who is into less verbose yet powerful motivation to choose yourself.

Some self-help books try to change who you are. *Choosing Me* takes a different approach—it reminds you that perhaps the person you've been looking for is the one you've been neglecting all along.

Kelly Weekers writes with remarkable clarity and compassion, exploring why so many of us spend our lives seeking approval, avoiding conflict, and measuring our worth through the opinions of others. Instead of offering dramatic life hacks, she invites readers to build something far more sustainable: a healthier relationship with themselves.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its practicality. The reflections and exercises don't feel like homework; they feel like conversations that encourage honest introspection. Whether it's learning to set boundaries, quieting your inner critic, or recognizing the difference between guilt and responsibility, each chapter offers ideas that are immediately applicable to everyday life.

What I appreciated most was the book's balanced tone. It doesn't encourage selfishness under the guise of self-care. Instead, it argues that choosing yourself means respecting your own needs while still treating others with kindness. That distinction makes its message feel both mature and realistic.

The writing is warm, reassuring, and refreshingly free from judgment. Readers looking for groundbreaking psychological theories may not find many surprises, especially if they're familiar with personal development literature. However, sometimes what we need isn't a revolutionary idea—we need timeless truths expressed with sincerity and empathy.

This isn't a book you'll finish and instantly transform because transformation rarely works that way. It's the kind of book you'll revisit whenever you catch yourself shrinking to fit someone else's expectations or forgetting that your own voice deserves a place in your decisions.

A gentle yet powerful reminder that choosing yourself isn't an act of selfishness—it's an act of self-respect.

Tbh I'm not a non-fiction reader...i generally just walk away from that section in bookstore...even if open just to smell the pages..I keep it aside reading the first page...my patience level to actually go through someone ranting about developing myself is very low...
And it's a red flag about me...that I can speak like a non-fiction reader, i can rant endless about how u can grow yourself, choose yourself, how can u achieve something, how can u overcome something, how can u understand people and their perspective...but when it comes to reading I'm like Nahhh-
I end up yawning...
Soo i finally decided to torture myself picking up a non-fiction...to actually know how people feel when they hear me...and tbh it was like reading a fiction without any protagonist...here the main character was me...I can imagine myself and imagine and fit myself everywhere...
This book actually had soo much better insight about...just you..
When every other book talks about adjusting...this was just about seeing yourself... prioritising yourself...and its not even a forced narrative making you feel guilty...but making you understand why don't u think about yourself..?? I mean i never thought that way..
Personally I'm someone who thinks 360° ...thinking every possible outcome..and understanding everyone's perspective and point of view... neglecting mine locked up in a casket at the corner...i shaep myself how others think and come to the conclusion understanding why others think that wayyyy...and all this while my own subconscious mind is lost ...
And maybee I just need to sometimes come to the conclusion of what comes to my mind first as a primary solution to any circumstances...
And this won't happen....very frequently after reading just one book ..I won't apply be applying it everywhere everytime from now..on..
I will still think about others...but maybe this time I would just think about me first and give a brief thought before moving to the opposite...

There are some books that arrive when you need answers, and then there are books that simply sit beside you while you figure them out. Choosing Me belongs to the second category.

I picked it up expecting another self-help book filled with motivational quotes and life-changing formulas. Instead, Kelly Weekers offers something much quieter.....a conversation. One that gently asks, *When was the last time you chose yourself without feeling guilty?*

Through simple stories, practical insights, and thoughtful reflections, the book explores self-worth, boundaries, people-pleasing, and the courage to live authentically. It doesn't promise overnight transformation, nor does it make you feel like you're failing. Instead, it reminds you that healing often begins with small, conscious choices.

What stood out to me was its comforting tone. Reading it felt less like being lectured and more like talking to someone who understands that growth isn't linear. While some ideas may feel familiar if you've read other books in this genre, the warmth and sincerity with which they're presented make them resonate differently.

*Choosing Me* isn't a book you'll rush through. It's one you'll underline, pause after a chapter, and return to whenever life starts pulling you away from yourself.

If you've ever struggled with saying "no," sought validation from everyone but yourself, or forgotten that your own happiness deserves a seat at the table, this book is a gentle reminder to come back home......to yourself.

A comforting, reflective read that proves choosing yourself isn't selfish; it's the foundation for everything else.

This book begins with a powerful quote: “Do you know who you are? If you don’t, others will tell you who to be.” From the very beginning, this line completely draws you into the book and makes you reflect on what it is trying to tell you.

The book beautifully explores the importance of accepting your past because, while we cannot change what has already happened, we can learn from it. It reminds us that we cannot truly move forward in life until we acknowledge and accept our past. If we don’t learn from our experiences, we may end up repeating the same mistakes. The author also talks about the trauma we carry, how we can embrace our past, and how we should be grateful for the person we have become today.

This book feels like a complete journey of self-discovery. It constantly encourages you to choose yourself and fills you with thoughts that inspire positivity and growth. It beautifully discusses the importance of being yourself and having the courage to walk your own path, even when it goes against what the world expects from you.

One of the things I truly loved about this book is how it explains that choosing yourself also means setting boundaries and not agreeing with everything just to please others. It encourages you to listen to your inner voice and trust yourself.

Written in a simple yet engaging way, this book keeps you immersed throughout. As a psychologist, the author brings meaningful insights that help readers understand themselves better. This book is not just something you read it is an experience that encourages you to reflect, heal, and truly choose yourself.

"Choosing Me" by Dutch psychologist Kelly Weekers came to me at exactly the right time. It felt like reading some much needed reminders I didn't know I needed. Reading it was less like being lectured by a self-help book and more like having an honest conversation with an older sister who gently nudges you to be kinder to yourself.

The book explores themes like understanding how your past shapes you, setting healthy boundaries, trusting your inner voice, letting go of guilt, and choosing yourself without constantly seeking other people's approval. I especially liked the way the author explains how our childhood experiences and the "conditions of worth" we grow up with continue to influence our thoughts and choices as adults. I especially loved the backpack analogy and how it painted some clear imagery in my mind about how our past baggages shape even our present behavior and how therapy can help you understand yourself better.

The writing is simple, warm, and easy to follow. Instead of offering quick fixes, the book encourages you to ask yourself better questions, challenge old beliefs, and slowly replace coping patterns that no longer serve you. It also reminds you that choosing yourself isn't selfish. Sometimes it's exactly what you need to become a happier and more authentic version of yourself.

Overall, this is a thoughtful, beginner-friendly read for anyone who wants to reconnect with themselves and make choices that feel true to who they are. Sometimes all we need is a gentle reminder that it's okay to choose ourselves.

Book Review:

Choosing Me by Kelly Weekers is one of those self-help books that makes you stop and think about yourself. Written by a psychologist, the book is easy to read because the English is very simple and the examples feel relatable. It teaches that before taking care of others, we should first learn to take care of ourselves. Self-love is not being selfish, it's something everyone deserves.

I loved how the author explains that our feelings are valid and we should not ignore or hide them. Instead, we should let ourselves feel every emotion and give it time to settle. The book also talks about how our childhood and upbringing shape our thoughts, and why we need to unlearn some beliefs that no longer help us. I also liked the chapters about accepting feedback with confidence, letting go of emotional baggage, embracing difficult experiences, and making space for a happier and healthier version of ourselves.

The only small drawback for me was that there were too many self-reflection questions, which sometimes made the book feel more overwhelming.

Overall, this is a comforting and practical book that reminds us to choose ourselves without guilt. If you're starting your self-love or healing journey, I think this book is definitely worth reading.

Just completed reading “Choosing Me” by Kelly Weekers. A self-help book, a genre that never really resonated with me, I couldn't become the person who would sit with a self help book, noting down points and then magically change from the next day. I don't follow someone else's footstep coz I am different and they are different.

And that's the thing about this book, it didn't try to change my habits, it just made me aware of the things that happens to me, to us everyday, every moment yet gets ignored due to our lack of knowledge of that.
That moment when someone praises us, and rather than feeling happy, we reply with no need to joke, that moment when someone insults us and we take it as yeah you are ryt, when we continue a practice just becoz we saw people, our family doing it, without realizing how it's harming us, and as sited in the book, we are carrying a baggage, baggage that's is filled with everything and we carry it without realizing that it's our baggage and we don't need to carry someone else's package and we can empty it and take only things that are necessary, that makes us walk with ease.
I wont say, I am a changed human after reading this, but I would surely say, I am aware now, of the things that never came to my notice before.
And probably, I will try to remove some things from my baggage and try to embrace myself with more love, self love.

So yes, this is a reccomendation from my side, if you wish to understand the problems that you never realized were problems.

Some self help books tell you to think positively. This one keeps asking a harder question. Are you living your life or someone else's?

Originally published in Dutch in 2023, Choosing Me became a bestseller before being translated into English in 2024, and it's easy to see why.

Kelly Weekers takes readers through three simple stages, knowing yourself, being yourself, and choosing yourself. Instead of offering quick fixes, she gently encourages you to pause, understand yourself, and make choices that feel true to who you are.

The writing is simple, conversational, and easy to read, making it ideal even if you don't usually pick up self help books.

What stayed with me was the emphasis on boundaries. Whether it is relationships, friendships, family, or work, the book reminds us that choosing ourselves is not selfish. It is about taking responsibility for our lives without waiting for others to change.

I also liked that the advice is practical, with reflective exercises that make you think instead of simply nodding along while reading.

If you've reached a stage where you are questioning old patterns or learning to say no without guilt, this book will feel like a gentle companion rather than a lecture.

✅ Who should read:
*Readers exploring self worth, boundaries, and authentic living
* Anyone looking for an easy, practical self help book

❌ Who should skip:
* Readers looking for psychology backed research or groundbreaking ideas
* Those who prefer fast paced narratives over reflective reading

Book Name:-Choosing Me
Author:-Kelly Weekers
Pages: 187

"No matter how old you are, there is still a small child inside you that deserves your attention—a child that wants to be acknowledged, loved, and reassured."

"Choosing Me" is basically a self-help book for overthinkers, people pleasers, and those who always put others first. The title itself conveys an important message: always choose yourself and prioritize yourself first. That doesn't make you selfish.

The book is divided into three parts: Knowing Yourself, Being Yourself, and Choosing Yourself.

In the first part, there are some beautiful messages, such as the idea that your past does not define who you are today. People make mistakes, learn from them, grow personally, and break old patterns.

The book encourages readers to be honest with themselves. Only you know how hard you have worked to get where you are today. You have overcome difficulties and challenges in your life. There is something magical within you that gives you the strength and hope to face those challenges.

It teaches us to prioritize our mental health, learn to say "no" with confidence, and set healthy boundaries. It reminds us to become our own best friend because no one knows us better than we know ourselves. We know what makes us happy or sad and what gives us hope and strength.

Healthy selfishness is necessary. There is nothing wrong with prioritizing yourself and doing things that make you happy.

Choosing Me is a beautiful book filled with valuable life lessons. Everyone should read this book at least once.

📖 The Question It Asks Is the One Most of Us Avoid

What do I actually want? It sounds simple. It isn't. What makes "Choosing Me" immediately different from most self-help books is that it doesn't rush past that question with motivational padding — it sits with it, and more importantly, it hands you the tools to sit with it yourself. From the opening pages, there's a quality of genuine understanding here that feels less like instruction and more like recognition.

✨ What Works Particularly Well

🔸 The relatable examples never feel constructed or generic — they mirror the kind of quiet compromises real people make daily

🔹 Practical exercises are genuinely actionable, not performative — they prompt reflection without overwhelming

🔸 The progression from pattern-breaking to boundary-setting to inner voice feels organically sequenced rather than arbitrarily chaptered

📍Where It Hits Hardest

The section on guilt as a mechanism of external control is quietly devastating. Most of us have never examined how thoroughly other people's expectations have authored our choices — and the book handles that revelation without inducing shame, which requires real skill.

✨ One Honest Note

Readers already deep in self-awareness work may find certain foundational concepts familiar. This is a book best met with genuine openness rather than prior assumptions.

💫 Wrapping Up

Warm, practical, and quietly radical — "Choosing Me" doesn't promise transformation. It simply creates the conditions for it. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

I have read quite a few self-help books, so when I picked up Choosing Me, I thought it would be another book telling us to love ourselves and move on from the past. But this book turned out to be much more than that.

What I loved the most was how the author talks about the past. Most books simply tell us to let it go because we can't change it. But this one explains how to understand the past we carry within us and how it continues to influence our thoughts, decisions, and emotions. I found this part incredibly relatable because sometimes we don't even realize how much we're still holding on to.

Another thing I really liked was how every chapter reminds us to choose ourselves. Whether it's trusting our inner voice, embracing change, practicing self-love, or setting healthy boundaries, the author explains everything in a simple and practical way.

I also loved the discussion about choosing yourself without feeling guilty. We often feel bad for putting ourselves first or letting go of people, and I think the book handles this topic beautifully.

The writing is easy to understand, and every chapter gives you something to reflect on. It doesn't feel preachy; instead, it feels like a gentle reminder to know yourself better and be true to who you are.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who struggles with overthinking, self-doubt, guilt, or simply wants to understand themselves better.
