What do you get when you mix a revenge-driven mortal with an evil God of Death and an opportunity of a lifetime? An erotic fantasy novel filled with angst and trigger warnings.
Death:
I want her dead.
Everything within me howls to destroy that pretty little mortal so that I can claim her deliciously tarnished soul. When I’m done with her, she will be writhing underneath me, sinning like a bad little mortal should.
But no matter how much I long to kill her now, I must wait until she completes the Death Trials my father, The Devil, challenged her to win. Only then will she claim the title of ‘Deaths New Pet’, and I become free to do whatever the hell I want with her. And trust me, I plan on ruining my little mortal until she realises the true meaning of hate.
Perhaps that will be the day when the evil God of Death finally cracks a smile.

It was so bad, I DNF at 73%! I gave it an honest effort but I just couldn’t do it for my own self respect. Great idea but was not written well at all. And there were so many grammatical errors in it I don’t think it was edited at all.

🌿 Scarlet makes a deal and enters into the Devil's trials to find Deaths New Pet. She enters the trials to make her abuser suffer but as the games progress she finds herself engaged in a steamy love affair with Death!
🌿 The smut in this book is unmatched, it's dark, it's so very spicy 🥵 hot under the collar does not even begin to describe how this book made me feel!
🌿 I absolutely loved this story! From start to finish I could not put it down, I felt every emotion for Scarlet and I loved the fierce woman she became. Death surprised me as a character, he was such a well rounded character, I love his and Scarlet's dynamic, I love how he empowered her towards the end of the book.
🌿 This is a relatively short book being a novella, but it doesn't miss anything from being short! Holly has thought of everything, all of the characters are well rounded and I love that there is a glossary at the beginning of the book outlining the specific characters.

Thank you Holly for giving me this opportunity to read and review this book for you 🖤
Death’s New Pet by Holly Guy is part of the Love After Life Series. Scarlet, after surviving a horrific life with her husband and brother-in-law, finds herself worse off in her desperate pursuit for revenge. In the clutches of Death himself. I love an FMC who can handle herself, and after all she has been through, Scarlet can hold her own. The book is dark and angsty, with a good dose of very dark romance spice.
The trigger warnings state that the content is designed to push the boundaries of dark romance, and I’m pleased to say that this book hits the mark. So, please do check the warnings.
I thoroughly enjoyed Holly's writing. I felt the book had good flow, and I enjoyed the progression of the main characters. I’m looking forward to reading more of the series.
The audiobook is performed in duet by Allie Rose and Sean Masters. Allie did an amazing job portraying all of the female characters. Making each distinguishable from the other. I felt she captured Scarlet's energy perfectly. Sean never disappoints with his performances. He nailed his portrayal of Death; he oozed power, which I loved. The other male characters were performed expertly. A cracking audiobook that I can’t wait to listen to again.
When Scarlet escapes her prison, revenge is the only thing on her mind and it’s justified however, she finds herself in Death’s trials. Has she swapped one prison for another 😬
Do read the trigger warnings ⚠️ or open invite for some 😈
I was routing for her throughout and she didn’t disappoint me 🩸🖤🌶️🔪💀⚰️

Thank you Holly for giving me this opportunity to read and review this book for you 🖤
Death’s New Pet is a dark and beautifully written story that left a strong impression on me, even though it also left me with a few lingering questions.
The story slowly pulls you into Death’s world, and while it took me a few chapters to fully sink into the atmosphere, once it had me, it truly had me. The darkness, the power dynamics, and the psychological tension were compelling, unsettling, and addictive in the way a good dark romance should be.
That said, there were certain plot elements I wished had been explored more deeply. The storyline involving his brother and his wife felt very brief — we get a basic understanding of what happened and why, but it appears and disappears so quickly that it left me wanting more. Personally, I would have loved a deeper exploration there, as it felt like a missed opportunity to add even more depth to the story and the characters.
Despite that, I genuinely enjoyed this book. The atmosphere is intense, the writing is immersive, and the story stays with you even after you finish. While not everything is fully answered, the emotional pull and dark allure of the narrative made it a very engaging read overall.
did i buy this because of a 10 second clip i saw on tiktok? yes
did tiktok lead me astray slightly? yes
now i will say i’m definitely NOT a fantasy gal, and this solidified it for me.
tbh the book itself was not bad, but i think, for me, if the book is fantasy, that fantasy world needs to be fully built out and really descriptive. and this wasn’t. i would’ve loved to have more about the games, make it feel more real, even if it made the book a good few hundred pages longer, i feel like it could’ve used it.
this very much just felt like an angry horny man, and it would’ve been nice for Death to fully understand and sympathise with Scarlets traumas before engaging, as i feel that would have helped empower her.
however the ending was very much chefs kiss, and a 2⭐️ feels too ruthless but a 3⭐️ feels like too much?

I can't decide whether to rate this a 3 or a 4! The plot is very well thought out and the idea is on point! There are questions though. Some details are lacking and some descriptions are vague, leaving me wondering some small details like how the main character came to being in the situation in the first place, or what age she is. But other than that I really really enjoyed this read, it was easy, it was dark it was dirty and I am totally here for it! Plot 5/5 Spice 🌶🌶🌶
Great story idea, but it was so poorly written that I couldn’t finish it. Even the characters were poorly written and the way she would switch characters mid paragraph was not the best choice
It was like saw and the hunger games had a baby?? I think it would be cool for there to be more books that focused on the different siblings of the hell realm. Their perspective and stories.
"And then, I do something no other sane person would do, I threaten Death." 😈🔥
Holly Guy, I just have to say—WOW! 🤯 From the very first page, you had me completely hooked. This book was dark, twisted, and absolutely addictive! Scarlet’s journey was intense, and the dynamic between her and Death had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. 💀❤️🔥
I loved every moment—the danger, the trials, the passion, and the beautifully wicked storytelling. Thank you for creating such an unforgettable ride! I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time and recommending it to everyone who loves a deliciously dark romance. 👏📖
When I first encountered the trigger warnings for Death’s New Pet by Holly Guy, I found myself genuinely intrigued and curious about what the story would entail. However, upon reading, I felt that the book was rather mild for the dark romance genre. While the premise had promise, it lacked originality. The book could have been much more compelling if Holly had dedicated more time to expanding the plot, developing the world in which the story takes place, and fostering the growth of the characters. Additionally, the narrative was plagued by numerous grammar and spelling errors, which detracted from the overall reading experience. With a bit more effort in these areas, Death’s New Pet could have truly realized its potential.
In my personal belief, I do not associate death with torture and evil. I consider death to be neutral, serving the role of guiding a soul to either heaven or hell without judgment. Consequently, while reading this book, I found it difficult to accept the portrayal of Death as solely a part of hell, thriving on torture and sadism.
Another frustrating aspect was the vague backstories of both Scarlet and Death, which were only briefly touched upon. Although both of their stories were intriguing, I wish Holly had taken the time to delve deeper into them, fully developing their histories. Alternatively, she could have opted to avoid mentioning them altogether if they were not going to be elaborated upon.
I honestly do not understand why many dark romance authors choose SA victims as their female protagonists, especially when the male protagonists in these stories often resemble their previous abusers as much as they do their love interests. However, in Scarlet’s case, this choice was somewhat justified because she eventually succumbed to the darkness, evolving into both a sadist and a masochist.
I found Scarlet to be a compelling female main character. Her headstrong, stubborn, and determined nature stood out, especially given the immense trauma and genuine evil she endured. I felt a sense of relief when she finally embraced the darkness within her, as I deeply believed that therapy alone would not have been sufficient to restore her to a normal life. However, Holly’s poor execution in developing Scarlet’s backstory and experiences hindered my ability to form a strong emotional connection with her. While the potential for a deeply resonant character was present, the lack of depth and detail in Scarlet’s journey left me feeling detached from her struggles and triumphs. More comprehensive storytelling could have allowed readers to fully empathize with and understand Scarlet’s transformation.
Although Death can be considered a compelling character, he was getting lost in the story. Despite being present in every chapter, he became overshadowed by everything else happening. I honestly didn’t feel any emotional connection to him. He was just another dominant alphahole, a common archetype in dark romance novels.
All in all Death’s New Pet was a quick fun read that needs a few rounds of heavy editing.
This book had an intriguing storyline. Our FMC experienced brutality for twenty years, finally escaping from her hellish existence by a being unknown. Six months later, Scarlett exacts revenge, except it doesn’t go as planned. In her quest for revenge she takes more lives than intended. Now, thanks to Misery, she is involved in an underworld fight to the death. A permanent death. The winner? Well they still die, but get a final request. Scarlett will stop at nothing to win so she can finally get her revenge she desires.
Death is supposed to have a human pet in order to show the other powerful families that his is still the one with the most power. The game that his sister Misery started, will find him a new pet. He of course will unalive them the first chance he gets, but for the sake of his family, he goes along with it. There is something intriguing about player ten. This slight little thing with fury and vengeance in her eyes. Death must have her. Why? He hasn’t a clue, but he will make this little mortal his pet.
As interesting as the story could be, and at times was, I was so bored. It was slow paced and didn’t hold my interest. The narration is the thing that saved it from being a DNF. Allie Rose is new to me and I found her voice and acting skills absolutely fascinating. She had me enthralled with her talent and ability to bring depth to characters that I found unable to capture my attention. Sean Masters skillfully brought Death and every other character he voiced to a new level. He oozed with dominance and power, cunning and desire. These two made the audiobook worth listening to. I loved their performance! That being said, if I were eyeball reading this book, I think I would have quit it. And I HATE saying that because I want to give everyone a chance, but this just wasn’t the book for me.
Who doesn’t love a good book about a dead vengeful mortal and an unhinged angry god of Death. 💀😈 Holly Guy wrote a devilishly wicked and twisted story. I gave this book 5 ⭐️ just based on the plot alone. The characters and setting were described in detailed and I could visually imagine this whole book as I read it. My heart was a shattered mess reading about Scarlets backstory and what was done to her. So when she sought her revenge I was so happy for her. 4 🌶️ for the smut. There wasn’t a lot of it but the scenes it did have 😮💨 was hotter than hell (pun intended 😉)
For 22 years, for what I can assume started out as a very young child/girl was married off and abuse, tortured and r*ped by her husband and his friends. When she finally escapes and seeks her revenge things don’t go as planned and she dies. After battling for a deal with the devil in the Death Trials to finally seek her revenge she is granted her wish but to only become Deaths New Pet in the process. But Scarlet is just as sick and twisted as Death incarnate and they were a match made in Hell.
The only thing I wish this book had was an explanation of what happened to Deaths family. I guess he just killed them off with his death particles at the end but nothing was mentioned afterwards. If he took the particles with him when he left the room to save Scarlet or if he left his particles in the room with his family to kill them. 🤷🏼♀️
CHECK CONTENT WARNINGS! This book touches on some heavy themes.
Death’s New Pet by Holly Guy is part of the Love After Life series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Scarlet escapes her abusive husband and, six months later, is ready to take her revenge. But her plan backfires and she is killed while attempting to murder her husband’s brother. In the afterlife, Misery approaches her with an offer: she can enter the Death Trials and, if she wins, she’ll earn the chance to exact her revenge. With no other choice, Scarlet accepts… without truly understanding what she has agreed to.
Alongside nine other contestants, she is thrown into brutal, nightmarish trials, forced to battle monsters as well as her deepest fears in order to survive. Throughout the trials, Scarlet catches Death’s attention. Her determination and resilience don’t go unnoticed, and although he opposes the trials themselves, he finds himself rooting for his fierce little mortal.
This is a dark fantasy romance centered on Death and a mortal heroine. If you’re not a seasoned dark romance reader, definitely check the content warnings first, as there are many intense and potentially uncomfortable scenes. The story is intriguing, filled with spice and supernatural family drama. I loved Scarlet as a character; she’s strong, compassionate, and protective toward some of the other contestants. Her moments with Death are intense and magnetic, and my favorite parts were the trials themselves and the way Death looked after her.
If you enjoy dark fantasy romance, this one is worth a try. 🖤
✔️Trials ✔️Touch her and 💀 ✔️Gore 🩸 ✔️Possessive MMC ✔️Revenge plot ✔️🌶️🌶️/5 ✔️🔥🔥/5
I would say this is about a 3.5 but rounded up. I found it enjoyable to read and kept me interested. Though I am a sucker for trails trope, which is about 80% of the book.
Scarlet was a strong character and the demented ways of Death really worked well together. She was forced into trials to become Deaths New Pet, but Death just went along with the trials not looking for a new ‘pet’ and vowed to kill the mortal soul that wins right away. Scarlet was determined to win to gain her revenge against the people who hurt her in her past. Death on the other hand wanted her ☠️ and wanted to own that death. It definitely was a battle of wills in this book.
She had a tortured past that you learn about throughout the book and all the pieces slowly come together. That could be a trigger for some so read the trigger list first. I never read the TW because nothing can bother me honestly. I did expect more gore and horror when it comes to erotica but that wasn’t really mixed in but more separate. The spice was there but short and doesn’t come until the end of the book. I wouldn’t say it’s a slow burn because there wasn’t a ton of 🔥. More possessive than anything.
If you’re looking for a quick read that has a bada** FMC who is not afraid of hell, and a MMC who is completely thrown off his game but not a simp, this could be a good book for you to pick up.
When I saw the dedication I was sold! But it just fell short. I (kinda) like this story and I think it had a lot more potential than it delivered.
Death's New Pet gets 2.5 ⭐️ because overall, the story felt extremely rushed and grammatical errors galore. It read like a half thought because there is just so much you can do with these hellish characters but it only scratched the surface. I feel like I am at odds because it is, indeed, a short smutty read with dark themes that were psychologically engaging. But I feel like EVERYTHING would have benefited from more development (and maybe that will come as the series progresses).
Namely, the concept of Death incarnate was just off. He works for the book. But ... I have varied ideals about it because not all death is torturous and stinking dread. Some death is calm and peaceful. I don't see Death as strictly a Hellish entity. Plus, I feel like him, as a person, calls to a very particular type (they all do, in his family) and that made it a little hard to full immerse into the tale.
Another note ... as a tale set within hell, I feel like she did a great job sticking to it's portrayal but it also detracted from the overall romance (from a living mortals prospective, I guess)?
Anyways ... I feel like Death's New Pet is true it's dedication in that the book is full of mind bending smut. But that's mostly it. I feel like the story was there, the plot was there. It just happened to fast?
However, would I read the other books to come? Maybe? I am intrigued.
I honestly kind of enjoyed this one! I’ve picked up quite a few paranormal romance and this one piqued my interest. It was pretty easy to follow. It was the perfect pace. We got a lot of action and plenty of explanation though out. Death gave off alone to avoid the responsibility of taking care of another living being. He warms up to Scarlet through each infuriating moment between them. There’s a connection. I really felt for Scarlet and rooted for her revenge. Death deserved a better fate as far as his marriage. They both deserved to find happiness. Maybe it started unconventionally and stayed unconventional but it works for them. Scarlet found her revenge and happiness. I’m happy she gets to help dictate where souls go especially the ones like the people who hurt her. Maximo and Leonardo SUCKED and I think they deserved worsed. There’s plenty of people in the trials who deserved worse than what they got. The healing process for both of them looks promising. I’m happy she got to keep her friend and see deaths little soft spot for her.
Favorite Quote: “There is no such thing as goodness down here. But maybe, just maybe, there might be something called love. If love includes the deranged, fucked-up promises we carve into each other's souls.”

This book is part of the Love After Life Series. The books are standalone and can be read in any order.
This is the first book in the series I picked up and what a start! I could not put it down. Scarlet, also know as Prey 10 has experienced the most horrendous and traumatic existence at the hands of her husband and his brother! When she finally escapes their clutches, seeking revenge is the only thing on her mind.
Unfortunately for her, she finds herself in the hands of Death himself! With the trials he has in store for his Prey, Scarlet will have to earn the revenge she so desperately seeks.
Could the undeniable connection she has with Death help her? Or will her strength of character ultimately prevail?
Without giving away any spoilers this book was really well paced, and I loved the idea of Hunger Games style trials.
Scarlet was a powerhouse FMC and I loved the chemistry between her and Death. The spicy scenes particularly in the second half of the book were on point.
I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I am relatively new to dark fantasy romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
