It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a widowed Amish man in possession of a household and two motherless kids, must be in want of a wife. Or something like that, more or less the situation of the novel.

In what is quite possibly my favorite of the series aside from the first novel, trouble comes by the way of Esther's in-law, the aforementioned widower Menno who needs to mark finding a new wife from his beloved checklist. Before his arrival in Bylar he's practically a joke among Esther's single friends, surely a fussy widower who sees marriage as nothing more than buying a "can of corn" to stick in the house.

The truth is a bit different, and baker Joanna and other eligible girls find that Menno is handsome, kind, a wonderful father... Who, yes, happens to be a little too obedient and is looking for a wife because his bishop told him to. But the good outweighs the bad, and it's only Joanna's insistence on not being another can of corn that stops immediate wedding bells.

The story is clever, definitely entertaining, and takes joy in its desperate romantic circumstances as other women not opposed to marriage appear, plotting plots, and the nature of obedience is examined. It's funny, poignant, and in my opinion one of Beckstrand's best.

Handsome Menno and lovely Joanna have a sweet meet-cute and are definitely interested in each other... until Menno proposes right away! He has a list and Joanna doesn't want to be just another can of corn. As much as Menno tries with some other nice ladies in the community, he and his girls just want Joannna. He has to overcome his habit of saying hilariously not-quite-appropriate things and putting Joanna on edge. Joanna is justified in wanting to be wanted for herself and not just a role that anyone could fill. Menno is just not great at expressing his deeper desires and emotions since he is pragmatically focused on following his bishop's counsel to find someone to fill the role of wife and mother. With plenty of angst and laugh out loud moments, they both are able to realize and understand their attraction and compatibilty... with the help of a great cast of characters from family and community. I'm loving this series!

This is Menno Eicher and his two young children's story.
This is Joanna Yoder's story.
“It’s Levi’s cousin Menno.”
We got a letter from him this morning. His wife died exactly a year ago tomorrow, and he’ll be here tomorrow with his two little girls for an ‘extended visit.’
He wants Levi to find him a job and a wife and give him a bed and three meals a day.”
Mary’s eyes widened. “He wants Levi to find him a wife?”
Joanna Yoder climbed out of the van followed by her three sisters, Mary, Ada, and Beth. Joanna wrapped both hands around the handle of the bag that carried her half-finished quilt squares. She looked up at the sky, breathed in slowly, and savored the smell of warm spring air and freshly cut grass. A lilac bush in full bloom grew on one side of Esther Kiem’s porch. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
“Do you smell the lilacs?” said her schwester Mary as she shut the van door behind her.
I recommend this book.

Love and lists

I loved, loved Joanna and Menno’s heartwarming and sweet Amish romance with a side of life course correction. This one had me feeling all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. It had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and faith. Menno is a widowed Amish single dad with two young daughters. Now that he’s been a widow for a year, he’s trying to follow the bishop’s directions and find a wife in a month. He travels with a to do list to Byler to stay with his cousin Levi and his wife Ester. Joanna is one of four sisters and at 28 she accepts that she’s an old maid and is content with her life. She is good friends with Ester and when she and the rest of the quilting circle hear of Menno’s plan, they agree to help Ester with her added chores due to his visit. Joanna thinks Menno is ridiculous to plan to pick a wife like a can of corn but she is willing to help Ester by watching his daughters. Menno is convinced that God put Joanna in his path the moment he gets to town and feels like checking off his list will be easy. Thus begins their beautiful journey of love, faith, mistakes, and second chances. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and a captivating storyline. It was a beautifully crafted story of choices, grace, forgiveness, and love all within the beautiful backdrop of the Amish community’s faith and lifestyle. I love the small loving Amish community of Byler and their quirky and wise English friend Cathy.

I am enjoying the Amish Quiltmaker series set in the small Amish community in Colorado. The characters are endearing, funny, and share their spiritual insight with their community. I almost feel a part of it.

Menno Eicher has been told by his bishop in Idaho that his mourning is over and he needs to find a wife now. With two small girls, he heads to Colorado to visit his cousin Esther (the quiltmaker) in hopes in find a wife. On top of his written list..find a wife. Joanna Yoder upon hearing this from Esther is appalled that a man can look for wife like a can of corn. She firmly does not want to be on this list. However, what we plan is not always in God's plan. On a chance meeting, she meets Menno and his two girls when they arrive in town only to be attracted to him. When she learns who he is, she teases him and their relationship begins. Menno unknownst to him has fallen in love but cannot seem to get out of the list zone to hear what God is saying and trying to teach him. He has a month to convince Joanna to marry him.

I loved both Menno and Joanna for different reasons. Joanna standing firm on what she wanted in a marriage and Menno with misunderstanding of trying to do the right thing. He has plenty of eligible women in the community that teach him a few things about how relationships work. It really became a community effort for Menno and Joanna to get on the same page. It was a fun journey to on with them. Loved it.

A special thank you to Kensington Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest Book 5 of 5 in The Amish Quiltmaker series by Jennifer Beckstrand had me laughing out loud and giggling right along with the group of girls and all of their antics. This is a must read light hearted book that will never let you look at a can of corn the same way again.

Menno, who is newly widower visits his distance cousin Levi and his wife in a nearby by community for the month with a to do list and a mission to find a wife, to help raise his two young daughters. How hard could that be? Menno is a very attractive man, a good father and a good provider and it seems there are plenty of eligible women needing to find a husband.

Levi’s wife Esther has agreed to help her husband distance cousin Menno find him a wife, and enlists the help of other ladies to build a list for him to choose from and take care of is girls while he looks for a suitable wife, what can go wrong?

Joanna Yoder, Esther's dearest friend is not crazy about this list and the fact that Menno is coming to stay with Esther and her family, putting so many demands on Esther and her family so close to her due date, has already decided she does not like Menno or want to be included on this crazy list like some can of corn.

Find out what happens on this fun and sometimes crazy adventure to find Menno a wife. I highly recommend, this must-read book.

I'll never look at a can of corn the same way again.

This was another great read from Jennifer. A sweet, Christian romance, that shows our plans are nothing compared to His plans for us.

I loved it!

If you’ve read Jennifer’s other books in this series that all started with Amish quilter Esther Kiem, a delightfully-quirky woman who keeps a firm hand on her temper by throwing apricots against her house, you’ll be thrilled to find this new addition to Esther’s story world.

Esther has a widowed cousin, Menno Eicher, whose bishop has told him that now that his time of mourning his late wife is over - it’s time to find another one! So Menno heads to Colorado to stay with Esther and her husband while he crosses that little task off his “to do” list.

Sadly for Menno, the single Amish ladies in town are not amused at his pragmatic way of wife-hunting; especially not baker Joanna Yoder, who thinks the whole thing is ludicrous; after all, what woman with an ounce of self-respect wants to be chosen like a can of corn? Interchangeable with any other can of corn - or potential wife!

Despite their differences, Joanna and Menno find themselves mutually attracted — and Joanna simply loves Menno’s two sweet daughters.

But will this be enough for her to compete with the other “cans of corn” Menno is considering to become the second Mrs. Eicher?

Does she even want to?

First Impressions Aren't Always Accurate

Joanna Yoder's first impressions of Menno Eicher weren't very favorable. As far as she was concerned, a man who makes a list that includes "finding a wife" doesn't rank very high on her list.

Menno is a very practical and obedient person, hence his to-do list. But his practical side sometimes gets in the way of what his heart is telling him.

And that is where Joanna and Menno's tug of war begins. Their story includes a lot of back-and-forth banter and some amusing occurrences. These include contributions by delightful children, some fun animals, and some well-meaning friends. All of this had me laughing and smiling more than once. It was often frustrating to watch Joanna wrestle with the fact that first impressions aren't always accurate, especially in matters of the heart. But following Menno's path to finding what was there all along was an absolute joy to see. It's a beautiful story that will truly touch your heart.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and completely my own.

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest by Jennifer Beckstrand was a pure delight to read, AND my first Amish read.

If all Amish books are this good, I'm sold. Chock full of humor, crazy matchmaking, misunderstandings, set-ups, and...I didn't know this, but they use cell phones. Okay, I guess I just don't know what is acceptable in this culture, and maybe you don't either. But, seriously, the cast in this story is fantastic.

Joanna is a baker in Colorado. Menno is a farmer in Idaho. His wife dies, leaving him to care for two little girls. He lives in a tiny community with few marriageable women, but his cousin Esther lives in Colorado in an Amish community with many marriageable women. Menno packs his bags and his daughters and moves in with his cousin, and in his hand is a to-do list. Top of the list is: find a wife.

Joanna sees Menno's list and asks to write one more item at the bottom. She writes: Can of corn. Her reasoning, Menno is treating his search for a wife the same as one purchases a can of corn. The can of corn theme flows throughout the story, adding the greatest humor.

Loved. Loved this story! Highly recommend.

There is something incredibly soothing about reading a Jennifer Beckstrand Amish romance. Her books are uplifting in a way few things are these days. You can’t help but feel good while reading them and at the same time getting your romance loving fix. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗛 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗧𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗥’𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧 is the fifth book of the series and was just as special as the other four. Menno was a delightful surprise. At first I was put off by him but then as his true character emerged I found myself to be his biggest fan. Joanna was just as interesting as I remembered her. I wanted so badly for her to let herself go and fight for the love she deserved (which she did). Add in Rosie, Lily, Pepper and the adorable goats and this love story was complete. I look forward to whatever comes next and am giving this book and the entire 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 series the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy.

P.S. Each book can be read on its own but in my humble opinion, every single book deserves to be read and enjoyed.

I chuckled. I laughed out loud. I guffawed.
This was a fun read.

Esther is pregnant. Quite pregnant. She runs a quilt shop and creates beautiful quilts. Her husband’s distant cousin Menno Eicher and his children arrive uninvited to stay with her family for a month. A MONTH!!! You see, Menno is a widower and he needs to get married by the end of the month. He has a To-Do list to find the “perfect wife”, you won’t believe it when you read it. He wants Esther to make a list of maedels who fit his requirements. Menno is hard-headed with about as much romance in him as the tinest thimble ever made. And he frustrates Esther and just about anyone he meets.

Joanna Yoder is no longer a young maedel. She creates and sells lip-smacking desserts. She hears about Menno before she meets him and doesn’t know who he is at first. His children are charming and … well, she already knows that she is NOT interested. Who could marry a man who goes about choosing a wife like he would a can of corn?

There is one young woman in the community who seems to be VERY interested in pursuing a marriage with the To-Do list man. And another that is interested but only part of the time.

The dialogue in this story just kept me entertained. There is one scene where Joanna makes it VERY clear to Menno that she is not interested in being on his “possible” wife list and Menno interprets 180 degrees the other direction.

What many don’t see is Menno quietly feeling some days he is “drowning in his responsibilities”. Ever felt like that? Most of us reach that point sometime in our lives. And we all handle it the best we know how. And Menno handles it with careful planning (i.e., To-Do lists).

Menno also can put his foot in his mouth and shove it past his kneecap to his hipbone. There’s the time he tells Joanna she is an …. no, I won’t spoil that scene for you. And as usual, Menno ends up wondering how anything he said was wrong. After all, it was all true. The man is oblivious.

I’m giving this book 5 stars. I’m expecting several errors will be corrected in the published release. I had a hard time putting this one down. It was so much fun to read. Oh — the character I didn’t like in this one is Menno’s bishop. See if you feel the same way.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest via NetGalley from the publisher, Kensington Books | Kensington. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Rating: 5 stars
Cover: Disliked. I mean I truly disliked it. The picture is fussy unless viewed in a large size and the yellow title & author are awful. Doesn’t look professional.

Menno Eicher is a widower who is very busy trying to look after is two small daughters and farm all on his own. He travels to his cousins house in Colorado in search of a new wife since where he lives there are no options.

There are a number of women who could match the ever growing requirements list. When he first arrives in town he has a chance meeting with Joanna Yoder at the bakery and he can’t get her out of his mind and finds ways to spend time with her even though Joanna is not interested in marrying him. But has they spend more time together Joanna realizes that she has come to love him.

You will have to read the book to find out what all happens in this adventure to find a wife for Menno. Let’s just say I will probably never look at a can of corn in the same way.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. The review expressed here is my honest opinion.

Esther Kiem, Amish Quiltmaker, living in Colorado becomes hostess for her distant widower cousin from Idaho. He arrives in Colorado, along with his two young daughters, with a to do list and a four week deadline. At the top of that list was finding a new wife. A strange way to pick a wife, he asked his cousin to give him a list of names of women who were possible wives.

You will be surprised to read all the activities that take place, and the women and their reactions and feelings toward him and his search.

As he gets to know each of the women, we wonder and see if and how his choices might lead him to a greater faith and love to risk a new life, not only for him and his daughters, but for the woman he may chose.

This is a very quick read that you definitely will not want to put down until you have read the entire book.

Thanks to Kensington and Netgalley for the copy of this book to read. The opinions expressed are my own.

The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest by Jennifer Beckstrand is a heartwarming and cute story. I enjoyed Menno and Joanna’s story. I admit, though, that it took me time to warm up to Menno. I am surprised that Menno managed to find someone to marry him the first time around. I like the author’s writing style. It makes the story easy to read. I also like that we get to see things from Joanna and Menno’s point of view. While The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest is the fifth book in The Amish Quiltmaker series, it can be read as a standalone. I laughed often while reading (which had my mother giving me looks plus I woke her up once or twice). The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest is a story about mistakes, love, second chances, humor, and faith. I will never look at a can of a corn the same way again. The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest an entertaining tale about a matrimonial mission, galloping goats, an adorable dog, sympathetic sisters, appetizing fry pies, a quilt quandary, and a joyful journey.

The Amish Quiltmaker’s Uninvited Guest by Jennifer Beckstrand.
Menno and his two daughter’s come for an extended visit for Levi to help him find a wife. Levi gives that task to his wife Esther. Esther gets help from her friends to put the eligible girls on the list. Joanna does not want to be on the! She feels like Menno doesn’t want someone special, just anyone will do, like a can of corn. Joanna does not want to be a can of corn. Menno is nice and handsome and his daughters are sweet but Menno has met his match in Joanna. Menno keeps making many mistakes instead of trusting God to guide him. Can Joanna be more than just a can of corn to Menno? Will Menno dating all the single women in town allow him to show Joanna that she is special?

From the outstanding author, Jennifer Beckstrand comes the Quiltmaker’s Uninvitred Guest. This is #5 in the Amish Quiltmaker’s series.

Widower, Menno Eicher, needs a wife to help him raise his two girls. Although he ha a long “list” of requirements, they all seem to lead back to one, Joanna Yoder. As always, Ms. Beckstrand has a perfect combination of emotions from happiness to sadness and everything in between. The story is full of real life, mistakes and forgiveness.

Every character is important to the story and the plot is well thought out and delivered well, making it realistic.

This book is a 5-star read all the way.

I was given an ARC from Kensington Publishing | Zebra through Netgalley, but was not required to give a positive review. Publication Date Jun 25, 2024.

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest by Jennifer Beckstrand, book five in The Amish Quiltmaker series, is a clever, entertaining, emotional, humorous, and takes joy in its desperate romantic circumstances as other women who are not opposed to marriage appear, as the nature of obedience is examined. I loved Joanna and Menno’s heartwarming and sweet Amish romance with its perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and faith.

Menno Eicher, a widower with two small daughters and farm in Idaho, is trying to follow his bishop’s directions and find a wife in a month; since his wife has been gone for a year. He travels with his daughters and a to-do list to Colorado in search of a new wife since where he lives there are few families, and no current options; staying with his cousin Levi and his wife Ester. Joanna Yoder is one of four sisters and at 28 accepts that she’s an old maid and is satisfied with her life. She is good friends with Ester and when Joanna and the rest of the quilting circle hear of Menno’s plan, they agree to help a pregnant Ester with her added chores due to his visit. Joanna thinks Menno is ridiculous to plan to pick a wife like a can of corn but is willing to help Ester by watching his daughters. A chance meeting with Joanna at the bakery and Menno can’t get her out of his mind; finding ways to spend time with her despite Joanna not being interested in marrying him. Menno is convinced that G-d put Joanna in his path the moment he gets to town and feels like checking off his list will be easy. Menno is nice and handsome and his daughters are sweet but he has met his match in Joanna. Menno keeps making many mistakes instead of trusting G-d to guide him. So begins their beautiful journey of love, faith, mistakes, and second chances.

Ms Beckstrand adds another outstanding installment to a wonderful series; drawing me into a story of choices, grace, forgiveness, and love all within the beautiful backdrop of the Amish community’s faith and lifestyle, as shown through sweet moments, supportive family, friendships, and life choices. I’m not sure I will see a can of corn the same way after reading this story.

A man comes from a small Amish community to see if he can find a wife and mother for his two little girls, and he has given himself a month to find a new wife. Wow, a girl should be really flattered to have a man, no real relationship, want to marry her. Well, I know for a fact that this does happen!

We journey with Menno and Joanna, will they ever see what is in front of them? Will one of the forward girls win his heart?

Will Menno stop putting his foot in his mouth?

I love the sweet father with his daughters, and how the community rally around this young family, and seem to want to help his bishop and have him remarry!

This story was so goofy that it actually made me laugh out loud at times. I'm pretty sure the goofiness was unintentional, but it was my favorite part about this story. In a nutshell this is a book about two people who are so dense it takes an entire community to show them that they love each other. Either someone is telling Menno how much Joanna loves him, or they're telling Joanna how much Menno loves her. I would have appreciated Menno and Joanna being able to tell each other this like adults. The plot consists of misunderstandings and the two aforementioned people not communicating. Definitely not the worst book I've ever read, but it was not original or particularly engaging. Three stars for goofiness though!

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest
Jennifer Beckstrand

3.5 - 4 stars
What an absolutely irritating, frustrating and ultimately sweet story. I almost threw my kindle in frustration more than once at Menno and Joanna's behavior, not to mention Verla Ann.
There were some quite hilarious moments within, derived come from “a plan” that is explained near the end of the book. I realized at one point I was about 75% finished and so completely frustrated with the antics of Menno that I wanted to give up. But, I was far too invested in the story to just stop reading, and I am so glad I didn't. I do recommend this book.

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest will have you laughing, crying and all the emotions in between. Menno feels he must find a wife after his wife's passing a year before. He hopes to come to his cousin's community, pick a wife and be married and back to his home in a month. Really--How can a man think picking a wife could be as easy and quick as picking out a pie in the store? Joanna Yoder, Esther's friend, thinks Menno is ridiculous but a chance meeting has her wondering. Although she feels she is definitely should not be on the list, God may have other plans. Will Menno find his wife in a month? Will Joanne helping lead to more? I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

I really enjoyed reading this book! There's nothing I like more than an Amish fiction story! It has drama, humor, more drama, and more humor!

The cast of characters is written brilliantly! Menno, sweet, handsome, not too bright, man. I spent half of the story feeling bad for him and the other half wanting to shake him. The Yoder sisters are amazing! Ada is my favorite. She's a take charge, tell it like it is woman. All of the children are adorable. Pepper is a protector and a true friend!

Faith in God is prevalent throughout the book. I liked how Menno would quote scriptures and how he found his strength in God's word.

My absolute favorite parts of the book were when they talked about pies! I'll definitely have to make a fry pie very soon!

When widower Menno Eicher’s bishop tells him it is time to remarry, Menno takes that advice to heart. Since there is no one in his small community to marry, he travels to his distant relative’s home, with a To-Do list to find a wife. The women in this community take matters into their hands as he begins to look for and date eligible women. The road to true love is really rocky in Menno’s case, only he has no idea just how rocky it will become. Joanna is attracted to Menno, but is extremely put off by his actions and his list. What happens to Menno when he begins to see the errors of his ways is a delightful tale. This romance is quite well written, peopled with wonderful characters, and is quite entertaining. It’s also instructive: romance doesn’t need a to-do list!

Book 5 in the Amish Quiltmaker’s Series, this could be a standalone but do read books 1-4. They are so good and will keep you laughing.

Menno needs a wife, as all Amish single father’s do. Recently widowed, he’s so very obedient to the bishop. Maybe too obedient? I laughed at his to-do list and the way Joanna reacted. I mean, who wants to be a check mark on a to-do list? Especially when you don’t think you even want to be married. And no woman wants to be a can of corn. (Read it to find out!)

This story was delightful, lighthearted, comedic, poignant, and had all the feels. I highly recommend it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Filled with humor and plenty of tension, this Amish drama will keep you rooted to your seat as you gallop through the pages. A visiting widower seeks a wife and a mother for his children. Only this item begs to be marked off his to-do list so he seems open to any woman who might qualify, rather than traditionally courting and seeking a deep relationship. The appealing plot was different than any I’ve read before and the intriguing characters liven up the drama. Don’t miss this fun book. Even if you haven’t read any others in this series, don’t worry—this one can stand on its own. I received a copy from the author/publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

The Amish Quiltmakers uninvited Guest

Menno comes to town to find a wife. He meets Joanna on his first day in town. He makes a list of who to date and other things. Joanna does not like his list. The story is funny in parts and very touching in other parts. I really enjoyed the book. At times I feel bad for Menno and other times I felt bad for Joanna. I loved his girls, Menno was a great father. I loved all the characters, I got engrossed in the story from the first word.

I received an advanced copy of the book from NetGalley. This book review is my own opinion.

This is the 5th book in the series and I enjoyed it as much as I did the other ones. So lighthearted and fun, it made the book more delightful than I imagined. The matchmaker is at it again with Menno and Joanna’s story. Will this end up to be a future together or one that they will need to go their separate ways and find someone better suited for them? You will need to read it to find out for yourself.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher. All words are my own.

Jennifer Beckstrand does not disappoint! Whenever I need a light read that will make me laugh, make me really care about the characters, and have an unexpectedly deep spiritual message woven masterfully throughout the story, she is my go-to! And her books just keep getting better and better! This book did challenge me in the area of forgiveness as I'm not sure I could have forgiven the final conflict as easily as Joanna was able to. All in all, a delightful read! I devoured it in one day!
