Der bucklige Wadim nutzt die Wirren eines Bauernaufstandes 1774, um am Adligen Palizyn Rache zu nehmen, der seine Familie ruiniert hat. Dabei kommt ihm seine Schwester in die Queere, die im Hause Palizyns als Waise erzogen wurde und sich - nachdem Palizyn versucht, sie zu vergewaltigen - unsterblich in dessen Sohn verliebt.

Lermontows Erstlingswerk - geschrieben, als er 19 war - ist Fragment geblieben. Zu schade, da sich der Roman wie ein Drama von Shakespeare liest. Spannend, actiongeladen und hochdramatisch, dennoch mit den für Lermontow typischen einfühlsamen Schilderungen des Lebens der einfachen Leute. Gerade in dem Moment, in dem man sich fragt, wie es dem Autor gelingen soll, das Drama aufzulösen, bricht der Roman ab. Vermutlich wusste Lermontow selbst nicht, wie er den gordischen Knoten lösen sollte.

Unfinished in more ways than one, but I did enjoy a lot of the imagery. I'll read Lermontov's "Demon" and see if he can get it right.
