Bastien is a vampire on vacation, and like any other vampire on vacation, all he wants to do is sleep all day and drink lots of wine. (And maybe some blood too. You know. If the opportunity arises.)
Which makes it very irritating when a vampire-hunting priest wakes him up at a super bright and sunny hour to kill him. But this vampire hunter happens to be very handsome . . .
And Bastien happens to be so very thirsty . . .
This edition includes a sneak peek of the upcoming novel Saint, coming everywhere this fall!
Sanguine was originally published in the Australia anthology in 2020.
Picked this one up on my never-ending quest to work through my kindle backlog and it was fun!! I hadn't read a Sierra Simone in a minute and this reminded me that I really need to prioritize her more bc this was hella fast and smutty and fun.
Too short. Good story, but it does not feel complete. Which is a shame because even a short story can be a complete story. And Sierra has written excellent short stories in the past.
No plot just full-on vibin' with the homoeroticism. The vampire falling for the vampire hunting ex-priest situation that Bastien and Aaron had gave me fond memories of my bbs Johnny and Rayflo from Vassalordーone of my favorite manga series in existenceーsince they had similar dynamics. Thus, I'm: deeply emotional and nostalgic. This novella's plotline is vastly different from that of Vassalord's though, but both are still quite alike in their cores as they're incredibly horny and gay. 😌
Anw, I really need a full-length version of this; Sierra pls come thru I'm begging 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
P.s. there's a sneak peak of Sierra's first full-length m/m book included, too, which I'm absolutely over-the-moon excited about!
How did she write a romance with this much depth and HEAT in less than 100 pages?!? Hell, in less than 60 pages?!? I took half a point off because this novella needed to be a 400+ page full blown novel.
The Plot: Once ex-priest (also ex-vampire hunter) Aaron sees vampire Bastien feed on a human without killing him (and he notices that the human is having a VERY good time) he decides that he wants to ask Bastien out on a date.
Y'all....I knew that Sierra would deliver with the heat (she always does), but I didn't expect this little steamy novella to be so ADORABLE and hilarious. Aaron is so shy and nervous and Bastien is absolutely delighted (and turned on) by his innocence. If you need a quick, sexy read for the upcoming spooky season pick this gem up!
But seriously Sierra...we need an entire trilogy with these two. I NEED MORE.
I purchased this book after finding it randomly on Amazon. I love Sierra Simone so I assumed I’d enjoy it.
Bastien is a vampire who just wants a vacation so he can enjoy the sunshine, catch up on sleep, drink plenty of wine, and perhaps enjoy some blood if the opportunity arises.
What makes that vacation difficult is the vampire-hunting priest who wants him dead. And who just happens to knock on his door. Bastien is not about to deny that the priest does look good…and he is so very thirsty.
This was such a cute little novella! I definitely enjoyed it and feel like I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, honestly. I wasn’t expecting that, if I’m honest.
The ex-priest is a cute one, that’s for sure. Bastien reminds me quite a bit of Lestat from the Interview of the Vampire series by Anne Rice, which isn’t a bad thing by any means.
He’s very well spoken, which is what reminds me so much of Lestat. I now want to re-read those books as well, which I do have the Kindle versions of. I’ll have to dig those out, for sure.
So yeah, if you like vampire/human sex, go for this one!
I’d love to see a full book with these characters. Such vivid world building for such a short story. So many layers of characterization and history and lore. The sex was hot — a given with Sierra Simone — but even those scenes felt a tad rushed. I wanted so much more of all of it!
Steam: not sure how my normal scale applies to a short story, but this is like 1/3 sex
Look, do I care that this short story has absolutely no plot? Fuck no. Did I none the less enjoy the fuck out of it? Hell yes.
It is no secret that Sierra Simone is my queen, and when I found out that this book existed I nearly had a heart attack. Moreover, WHY IN THE FUCK did I have to decide to check my emails in order to find out this short story existed?! That must be some sort of crime.
Anyway, Bastien is my king, Aaron is a sweet baby boy that needs to be protected at all costs. I am manifesting for them a beautiful wedding and Bastien eventually turning his priest so that they can spend eternity together. It is canon and I will be taking no questions at this time.
Also, my eyes went real wide at one point, because Sierra Simone holds so much power that she can still surprise the shit out of me from time to time, so there’s that. Honestly, this was so enjoyable. It was the perfect combo of smut and fluff and I will never not love how Bastian, a centuries old vampire, loses his absolute shit at how much he likes and wants to fuck Aaron.
If Sierra Simone ever wants to write a more fleshed out book for these two, I would be completely for it. I loved her take on vampires, and Bastien specifically, and I would love to know more of the lore that she establishes within the short story. Moreover, I am dying to know more about Bastien’s past in the Order of Saint Marcellus. Also, I actually want to know why Aaron got dismissed from the Church because I don’t think it’s actually mentioned. What I’m trying to say is that I’m obsessed and I want more, please and thank you!
”KC, want to read a book about a vampire and a vampire-hunting ex-priest?”
Me - “Ermmm, no, that’s not my jam.”
“But KC, the vampire is hot as sin and queer.”
Me - “Interesting, but the vampire thing isn’t my trope. I was never #teamEdward, even with sparkles.”
“Shame KC, because the vampire-hunting ex-priest is a sweet, innocent, gay virgin. Oh and Sierra Simone wrote it.”
Me - pass me my kindle because I need to devour the vampire and vampire-hunting ex-priest like I need my next breath.
And yum, that was delicious. Bites and all. Bastien didn’t need to sparkle, he’s luminous. I’m a sucker for big blonde priests. As is Bastien. Which Aaron soon finds out.
Omg. Omg. Omg. Omg. Omg. Omg. I'm literally speechless. That's the unique most flawless piece of writing I've EVER read right there. It's so wholesome and lovely and hot and well-written and poetic and sarcastic and adorable. Again, the writing is AMAZING. It's so beautiful and elegant. Even the spice is written like a poem. +Bastien is so me, Aaron is the single most adorable character there is, and their dynamic is everything. They are the cutest. I'm so crazy about this. Not enough words. I also read it for one particular scene I was looking for and it was THERE. The book being this short is a crime.
This started off fun… but the vampire-hunter wasn’t a vampire-hunter and wasn’t trying to kill ur vampire. Boo. He just thought the vampire was hot, which quickly leads to sex and instalove. There was also a smattering of purple prose, a few Radom French words thrown in, bloodsucking from a penis, and then our virgin priest have his ass “split in two”… which always leaves me more concerned for the state of the guy’s butt than anything else. And then it illegally ends at 60%. Had this actually been 100% story and not 40% preview of another book, this could have been great. But ending 3/5 of the way in? That’s just poor form.
A short story about a vampire and priest done only in the way that Sierra Simone can but the pièce de ré·sis·tance really is the audio which is narrated by the brilliant Brit himself Shane East.
Bastien is the sort of vampire you don't see very often. Broody yes but also very quirky and fun. Shane East never fails to do deliver in his accents and with Bastien was no different. Delicious perfection!
And then Aaron my heart!! He owns it now; I might have to fight Bastien for that sweet and very large man! Nod to Sierra for really conveying exactly how large of a man we are talking about here. Once a vampire hunter but no longer he wishes for the one thing he was always forbidden to have...
Short novellas like that are usually hit or miss with me because it is lacking in story, depth or the characters aren't relatable, but this story had all of that and more. Would I like more? Absolutely but if I never get it, I am 100% satisfied with this delightfully short story about getting what you crave.
I received a copy of this when I met Sierra at Apollycon. She was just handing them out if you came to her table. And honestly, I'm not sure why I sat on it for so long. It's a short story and it has a vampire. I should have devoured this immediately. Instead, it just went in the Apollycon pile of "to-read" books and stared at me all year - per usual.
This was fun. There's really not much to say about it LOL. AN ex-vampire hunter priest sees a vampire from afar and basically decides he must have some of that. That's your plot. It's adorable and spicy all at the same time and definitely has me wanting to read more from Simone (I've only read one other book of hers). I would have loved for this to continue and flesh out into a full story, but I'm also super happy to leave it in this little bubble where nothing can hurt them and they just remain blissed and happy.
“I’m not going to let you be lonely. Starting now. I want—I want to be tied to your bed. Married to you. I want your teeth in my neck whenever you’re thirsty. I want it, and you’ve said that I’ve earned every dirty thing I want by being so good, so I’ve earned this and I’m taking it.”
This had no business being as romantic as I found it to be for a book where a vampire bites someone's eggplant. Shane East never misses as a narrator. I would read a full length book about this combo.
It's cold and rainy and total fall vibes here and I was craving a little bit of vampire. While this is a short that was originally published in the Australia anthology, the short packs a punch and some heat from two characters that have some obvious chemistry.
Bastien is a vampire that has lived centuries and he knows his way around life. Aaron is an ex-priest that was trained as a vampire hunter. But now the only thing he wants to hunt is getting Bastien to suck his blood and so much more. While this was a taste, I wanted more. I hope one day that Sierra Simone expands this story because I think these two characters are just beginning.
If you’re good with straight up spicy goodness with tiny hints of background to the characters, where an ex-priest/vampire hunter wants a vampire to do wickedly bad things to him then this is right up that alley.
It had me laughing at how cocky, funny and irritable Bastien was and give me the innocence of Aaron who was looking for something to live for after living priesthood it was a yes and yes for me.
If Rev. Sierra can give us this with Bastien and Aaron in a short story I can only imagine what we would get if we got a full on novel with these two.
This book hits home for anyone with religious trauma (ahem, Catholic guilt), but don't worry, it's not that deep. Honestly, this is the kind of book I'd highly recommend listening to rather than reading. It's been a while since something got me this flustered while reading/listening!
“You have to admit, a priest who's worried about blood in his wine is deeply ironic.” I snorted at this part! 😂 The best thing about having been Catholic is getting all the jokes.
Quick and spicy MM with vampires! If you like Sierra Simone’s other books—or if you’re trying to ease a friend into her writing style—this is a perfect little aperitif to the rest of her work. It’s incredibly short, but it hits the spot when you’re looking for just a little something.
This was quite alright, with barely 60 pages there's a limit of what one can expect I guess but Sierra’s writing needs room to breathe to fully shine! I'm somewhere between 3.25 to 3.5 stars with this one. Bastien was a great character, with a lot more potential!
