Nothing says you can’t steal a heart. Keeping it though? That’s another problem.
Wade Espinoza knows a thing or two about hoards. As a dragon, he’s got plenty. What he doesn’t have is a relationship, and he swears he’s not looking for one. But when he’s sent to Boston to answer a cry for help from another pack, he’s drawn into a mess of fae bargains centered around a selkie who Wade instantly becomes obsessed with.
Riordan Maguire is struggling to keep his selkie clan out of the clutches of a fae lord who will do anything to take over their territory. Partnering with the Boston god pack means coming face-to-face with the first person he’s ever wanted to willingly give his sealskin. Too bad Wade isn’t local and is something altogether strange that Riordan isn’t sure he can trust.
Amidst a growing danger in the streets and Boston Harbor, Wade and Riordan are desperate to find a way to keep everyone safe. For bargains are dangerous things to break, but so are hearts. Wade isn’t willing to shatter either of theirs in a race against time that could see Riordan torn from him forever.

The audiobook is perfection, the book is perfection, so pretty much the whole reread was perfection. haha!
I will always recommend this book and series, and pretty much anything by Hailey Turner.
But like others have said, while this is marketed as a standalone, I wouldn't recommend reading it as a standalone. There are going to be backstories and references to different events that you will miss if you didn't read the original "Soulbound" Series.
To me that is a win, being able to have 7 books in the main series, plus 2 spinoffs, who wouldn't want to have 9 books ready to read and listen to!
I can't wait to do my reread of all the Soulbound Universe books within the next couple months haha.

EVERYONE GO GET THE AUDIOBOOK FOR THIS!! IT JUST DROPPED ON AUDIBLE!!!
Now, no one bother me for the next 4 hours haha!

Book: 5 million stars (but are we surprised? The answer should be no haha)
How do you review perfection in book form? The answer is you can’t. I have no words, I am just so thankful for Hailey Turner, she did the justice that Wade deserved for his book.
I am speechless, and am trying not to tear up when writing this, because I know this is an end of an era. I love the “Soulbound” series so much, and having these two additional standalone spinoff’s with Spencer and now Wade’s book is such a treat.
This story, to me, was everything that encompasses the original series: -The Action (it wouldn’t be a Hailey Turner book without a hard fought battle) -The Sass (I mean it’s Wade, how can you not get some sass from him) -The Food (have ample snacks near you because this book is bound to make you hungry) -The Love (on par with Jono and Patrick, the love between Riordan and Wade is so sweet to witness) -The Loyalty (within the packs, and clans) -And can’t forget The Chaos (in many forms)!
It was so good to see familiar faces pop in and have their moment (can’t give things away just yet).
I would say that if you haven’t started the “Soulbound” Series, you still have more than a week to finish all 7 books plus Spencer’s book before this amazing book comes out on September 4th. So in short, go and get started, pick up the books and the audio (because Gary Furlong narrations plus Hailey Turner books are what dreams are made of) and be prepared to be immersed in one hell of a series.
And yes, when the audiobook is release you bet your ass I will reread this, I don’t care if it is a few weeks after this read, it is worth going back to be with these characters again!
Again thank you to Hailey Turner and Valentine PR for sending me an ARC of this book, there was no book I was more looking forward to this year than this one.

IT'S HAPPENING, EVERYONE DON'T PANIC!!
Starting my first read (yes, I will reread immediately when Gary Furlong drops the audio) haha I am so thankful to Valentine PR and Hailey Turner for this ARC.
July 17, 2024
EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS COVER!!!!!! It’s so gorgeous!!! And the synopsis dropped too! What a day!
Wade you’re all grown up 🥲🥰🐉🔥
Now just 2 more months! I am really hoping the audio drops around the same time, because reading this without Gary Furlong narrating seems wrong haha! The audiobook should drop in September, but no confirmed date yet!
November 4, 2023 Yes I might be screaming and crying from excitement! I have been waiting years for this book, once I read Wade's character in All Souls Near & Nigh, you best believe I wanted to have a book all about him!
The best news is that Gary Furlong is also narrating, so I guess waiting almost a year for this book is fine..... it gives me more than enough time to reread the "Soulbound" series a few times before this book is released haha! These characters are honestly some of my favorites i've ever read and this series is one of my all-time favorites, so I love being able to go back in this universe with every additional book! September please come soon!!
I am so emotional as I write this review. I have adored Wade since his first appearance. Watching him mature and gain confidence and experience love and pack has been so beautiful. Hailey did right by our favorite fledgling. Wade gets a story where all his finest attributes get to shine and a mate he deserves. As always, Hailey’s writing is stellar. No one creates world like she does. The action scenes are so vivid that it felt like I was in them. We get land, air, and sea battles. So much eating. I might’ve gained five pounds. Don’t read while hungry! This final book in the Soulbound universe is absolutely amazing, but I’m not ready to say goodbye. Luckily, I can revisit them anytime I want to.
This book is a little hard for me to rate. When I signed up to review this book, it was mentioned it was a standalone book tied to a universe. But perfectly readable as a standalone. And I think that is not the case. This is my first book in this universe and I was completely overwhelmed throughout the entire book. Characters aren't introduced because they already exist in the universe. And especially in the beginning I was like who is who and how are they tied together? I think it's best if this book will be marketed as a part of the Soulbound series. Because all the reviews of those reviewers who jumped in with this book are around three stars. And the ones who are familiar with this series are just spectacular and gorgeous. And I think this book deserves all the love that it's getting from those who know these characters. Because I hate seeing low ratings due to the book being mis-marketed. So I hope that will get handled before it's released to the public.
The book itself is about Wade Espinoza. A hungry dragon that eats his size in a million. He is a fun loving character that lives in the moment and stands up to those in danger. He meets Riordan who is dealing with struggles of his own. He is a selkie and his sister's seal skin is stolen and he is desperately trying to find it. The team up and together with friends and family they go on an action packed journey. Which was fun and exciting.
Riordan's brother Donal sees how his brother is fixated on Wade. And that is how the epic love story between Riordan and Wade evolves and blossoms.
The bones of the book are really strong and good. But it really is a part of the Soulbound Series and reading the previous books is a must.
I experienced it as a three star book. But I want to be realistic towards the author and I'll give it 4 stars, because it probably deserves that and maybe even more. But I don't want to be part of butchering the rating of a book because it wasn't marketed properly.
Hailey Turner's writing and her numerous bookish universes have stolen my heart (and my mind as well!) since the very first time I read "A Ferry of Bones & Gold"; not only that, but I re-read her books at least twice a year (especially her "Soulbound" series) because they are among my most favourite books EVER, and they're such a comfort to re-read. Getting Spencer's book last year, and now Wade's? Now, that's a dream come true. I still can't believe it.
I adored this book to absolute bits. It was everything I was hoping for, and then some. Action-packed and filled with magic and shape-shifting, treasonous faes and meddling gods, secrets and discoveries and a cast of characters, both old and new, that stole my heart. And the world-building? The majestic way Hailey manages to transport the reader into her books? Gah, it's always amazing to witness, and this book was no exception.
< “You’re here? What are you?” Riordan asked, sounding a little bewildered and a lot less angry. “A problem,” Wade said cheerfully. “Don’t make me yours. You won’t like that.” Riordan’s gaze dragged up and down Wade’s body, making him blink as he realized he was being checked out? Yeah, he was definitely being checked out by the hot guy. Riordan tilted his head, a contemplative look coming to his eyes. “I don’t mind problems like you.” >
Obviously, I've loved Wade since the very first time I met him, but he stole my heart even more here. He's such a badass, but also a total sweetheart too. I loved seeing him so grown up, so much more at home in his skin, being all confident and snarky and funny, but I also loved seeing his more vulnerable side as well. What he was put through was horrific, and I'm so damn happy to see how secure he now feels, both with his pack (I think I might have cried too) and of course, with Riordan. Because WHEW. Riordan? Let me tell you, I spent half of the book swooning. He's the perfect person for Wade: respectful and protective, without ever being stifling, mindful of Wade's boundaries but also pretty mindful of his own too. He's also funny and ridiculously cute and the way he kept wanting to feed Wade? I SWOONED, like I'm sure Wade did too.
< “Heat doesn’t bother me.” “You’re pretty hot.” “That was the dumbest line. Please don’t ever say that around my pack.” >
I adored getting to know the selkies! Needless to say, I want the NYC god pack to adopt them and keep them alllllllll safe from harm. I loved how Hailey depicted them: as a species they're fascinating and freaking wonderful, and the fact that they have to be so careful with themselves broke my heart. I adored Donal and Saoirse, and I loved the Maguire sibling's relationship to absolute bits.
The romance stole my soul: it's pretty insta-love, but if there's one thing Hailey can do, it's make me love a trope I usually don't care for. Their relationship didn't feel rushed at all, and I can only applaud the author for that. I loved their dynamic, I loved how both of them were protective and mindful and also so damn loving too. And yeah: Riordan is a consent king, and I can only bow down to him. The steam was steaming!
The plot was fantastic, as usual: Hailey Turner is a mastermind when it comes to well-constructed, thought-out plots, and I was HOOKED. I loved getting the last answers we were missing, even though it also makes me feel damn nostalgic and sad. I can't believe this will be the end though *cries* I so hope there will be novellas and short-stories in the future because I already miss all these beloved characters. In the meantime, I might as well re-read the whole lot, no?
TWs/CWs: sexual assault (past), slavery, violence, death.
Wade Espinoza has been a special guy ever since he first appeared in the Soulbound series and now it's finally time for him to tell his story and what a wonderfully emotional one it is.
Hailey has most definitely done justice to this fledgling fire dragon, addressing the complexities of his captivity and the resultant trauma that caused, through to his devotion to his pack and his love of snacks.
And, speaking of, this book will make you hungry, so do have a big bunch of things to nibble on while you're reading but don't, whatever you do, try to keep up with Wade as he eats his way through the foodie delights of Boston!
Now, as with all my reviews of Hailey's works, you're not getting any spoilers, but let's just say that in Riordan Maguire, the Selkie Clan Chief, she's created a most perfect mate for Wade, one who not only is willing to be horded, but who also trusts him enough to hand over his most precious item - his sealskin.
The plot is clever and involves a whole load of those pesky Fae tricksters who often have an inflated opinion of their own importance!
We also get to meet the Boston God Pack and visit the city's Night Court, with an unexpected guest appearance from a couple of people I know we're supposed to hate but who I actually have a soft spot for 😂
It has everything you'd expect from a book in this universe. Some kick ass action and all the magic you'd ever want, some sweet and spicy moments, some heart-wrenching ones, great characters, astonishingly good world building, guest appearances galore, and an ultimately satisfying Happy Ending.
I really really hope this isn't the last time we step into this world, it's one of my all time favourites.
#ARC kindly received from the author via Valentine PR, I am voluntarily leaving a review
OMG, best news!!!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Wade‘s character he is a dragon 🐉 - can’t say enough how much I adore him. And the wait until I can read his book is going to kill me but, that’s nothing new. I’m terrible at being patient.
I feel like all my reviews of the “Soulbound Universe” start with the exact same sentence. But really, how is it possible that every single book in this series (so far) is so incredibly good?
“You don’t owe me anything.” “And if I want to?” “Debts are shitty. I won’t give you one.” “Then just give me you.”
I absolutely adored Wade. Ever since he became part of this fantastic storyline, I fell a little bit in love with him. I was so excited to see his journey...and Hailey Turner delivered once again. Riordan was also an incredibly good character. I immediately felt at ease with his character and am so relieved that Wade has found such a good partner (especially after everything he’s been through). The feelings, the emotions, the love—their relationship was really absolutely beautiful.
The supporting characters were also really great and complemented Riordan, Wade and their story well.
And of course the plot was absolutely brilliant. The play between fire and water was a particularly creative idea—and very fitting for Wade, the dragon.
There is really nothing bad about this book. I loved everything.
I am obsessed with this universe. I wish I could keep reading random stories about these characters forever.
I'm so glad we finally got Wade's story. He was such a great character since this introduction in All Souls Near & Nigh. He was always an endearing character in the original series, using his awesome true nature for more than one daring rescue, as well as his never-ending snack eating. He was an integral part of helping Jono, Patrick and Sage feel like a family.
I was a little worried before regarding his (basically) immortality. I knew his pack was not going to be around forever, and after all the abuse and suffering he endured, I just wanted him to be happy. I am so happy Wade met Riordan and his Clan of selkies, and that he won't be alone anymore. Their romance was also super cute, both finding each other irresistible, and being accommodating and supportive. I especially liked how Riordan was mindful of Wade's past and did all in his power to make him feel happy and safe.
Loved it! Wade found a mate who is not just perfect for him but is worthy of our beloved fledgling. Respect, growing trust and feelings between the two, fighting together and saving each other, and so much care when it comes to Wade discovering desire and being with another person by choice for the first time in his life. I loved how Hailey Turner treated Wade's past and his healing that is still a process. I'm used to expecting Hailey Turner MCs to go through the worst possible circumstances, but Wade already was there, and I appreciate so much that there was nothing like this in this book. It was happiness, joy, the best cameos, family, pack, humor, snacks, gripping action plot, outstanding worldbuilding, hoarding of the best kind, friendship, and love. Everything that makes the book perfect. It's not easy to write a story about everyone's favorite secondary character, but Hailey Turner nailed it and exceeded my highest expectations.
3.5 From an traumatized teen who has to fight to death for the amusement of some aztec god without knowing who or what he is to the King of Snacks who survived the end of the world alongside his found family – Wade came a long way and now grew into a character capable to hold his own story. I'm glad Turner gave him this chance and didn't condemn him to stay the cheeky dragon he's at the end of Soulbound.
That said, does it matter that this book is not as intense as the Soulbound books are? No, while I missed Turner's trademark style of putting her MC's through the wringer a little bit, I was quickly fine with the more easy flowing adventure she granted one of the readers favorite characters. After all Wade had his bout of drama right at the start of his introduction into the series. It mattered a bit more that Wade even as a still young dragon is nearly omnipotent and that at those times when his magic resistance isn't enough he has access to a bottomless fund and is well connected with several pantheons. On the other hand that allowed a reconnection with a certain master vampire and his formidable succubus.
Surely it isn't easy to create a captivating adventure with such a premise and I admit my view on this book is tinged a bit by nostalgia, by reaching for any chance to get back into the Soulbound world but that's not all. The battles are vivid and the end boss is a worthy opponent who even Wade can't conquer alone. Then there are a lot of new secondary characters who are much more than mere support and of course there's Riordan. Who would have believed that a Selkie is be the perfect match for Wade.
This was an enjoyable book in the Soulbound series!
It was very fun seeing Wade handle the situations. He had such a casual air about him, because he doesn’t want to deal with drama or formality, but he’s also a dragon, which makes him terrifying to most other supernaturals when he wants to be. And being a dragon means he also doesn’t have to worry about his safety in most situations, the way other characters do. So scenes where he’d go to talk to someone who didn’t know what he was and then suddenly bust out a bit of his dragon-ness to intimidate them? But still be so casual about it? I loved those moments.
Both Wade and Riordan were likeable characters, and their romance was sweet. Wade has had a messed up past, and Riordan was understanding of how it affected him. The romance had a bit too much of a fated mates vibe for me though. The attraction was so fast, and it wasn’t really portrayed to me why they were so drawn to each other, other than it was fated. But once they did get closer, it was still sweet.
Also, a dragon and a selkie! Surprisingly, I haven’t read many books about dragon shifters, and even fewer about selkies.
I’ve said it before, but I LOVE Lucien and Carmen, and it always makes me happy when they show up in a book. Glad they made at least a brief appearance here.
The story was a mix of romance, supernatural politics/conflict, and some fight scene action.
This takes place after the events of the main Soulbound series, you could probably read this if you haven’t read the others, but I wouldn’t really recommend it. There are a lot of references to past events and characters and world-building. You don’t need to have read Resurrection Reprise, though it takes place after that (Wade mentions the characters in like one sentence), if you want to read in order.
The audiobook by Gary Furlong was great. Sounded natural. Different enough voices. Different accents. Didn’t really do a Boston accent, which I think some characters were supposed to have, but that’s fine.
Overall, a fun main character, a sweet albeit quick romance, cool supernaturals, and a nice addition to the series!
Wade's story was absolutely everything I wanted and needed, and was worth waiting for. This was a quintessential Hailey Turner novel. It had a good bit of action and suspense, well placed and well timed humor, a whole lot of snacks, MCs who were absolutely adorable and the romance that melted my heart. I loved Wade's POV and the person he has become - from a scared teen he turned into a strong and smart young man with a heart of gold. I liked Riordan and his clan of selkies. The research on everything was, as always, top notch.
This story provided much needed follow up on New York City god pack. It was a nice conclusion to the story lines of my fave characters: Patrick, Jono, Sage, Marek and the others. Many made cameos and it was so good to read them again. Events of Wade's past were handled with care and I really appreciated that. I enjoyed this book so much. 10 out of 5 stars! Would read it again!
3.5 stars. It's very memorable in it's world building; Wade is an incredibly lovable character with his light hearted persona, food addiction and traumatic past.
However, I flagged from the start because of the info dump (which I expect from fantasy, but this was BAD, trying to remember 20 different characters in the first 3 chapters), only for a select few to ever make an appearance.
I also wish there was a little more romance. Maybe a couple dates, or some flirtatious banter.. I thought the plot was engaging but the romance felt VERY sidelined; like, why include it at all? For one spicy scene?
Also, the psychological recovery that Wade progressed through happened in approximately TWO scenes. One minute he's a trauma victim and the next he's 100% down for anal. It felt very rushed and unimportant to the story, which made me sad bc I liked Wade so much 😢
I thought it was so much fun to return back to the Soulbound Universe and finally get Wade’s book! I was actualy on the fence about Wade getting his own story because it felt like he was still so young in the previous series and I felt like he needed to go through his own journey of healing first before getting a romance book. But I think everything came together perfectly in this book and Hailey Turner really just had the perfect love interest for him and I loved reading their story so much! We have a lot of returning characters as well since you can’t have Wade without Patrick and Jono, and of course their entire pack.
While this book was written as a standalone, I think if you’re a reader who wants to know the full backstory of a character or don’t want to be spoiled about the events at the end of the Soulbound series (namely, in the book A Veiled & Hallowed Eve) definitely go check those books out first. But it isn’t imperative to read Spencer’s book, Resurrection Reprise, before diving straight into this one.
Content warnings include mentions of sexual assault, kidnapping, mentions of trafficking, mentions of torture, violence, and death.
We first met Wade Espinoza in All Souls Near & Nigh. He was 18 at the time and in this book, he’s 23. He’s grown a lot in that time and really come into himself as an individual. He’s much more confident in himself and his abilities than he used to be. Wade lives on his own in New York City but is still close to the rest of his pack. As a fledgling dragon (because dragons live very long lives so at 23 he’s still young), he also keeps his hoard there (which isn’t JUST snacks).
This book starts off with a wedding. It’s not the wedding I would say I expected, but it was nice. It’s also where Wade meets his love interest for the first time. I will say that I thought the fae at the buffet was going to be more of a player in the overarching plot but no, he was just a random fae who was there so that the love interest, Riordan, could meet Wade properly. But more on Riordan later.
When the rest of Wade’s pack is tied up with other responsibilities and can’t go to the aid of a werecreature asking for help in Boston, Wade winds up going on his own to provide assistance in the name of his pack. He meets Ella, the dire of the Boston god pack, who is desperate for help to get their pack alphas back. Their alphas, Harper and Casey, were taken 2 weeks ago by a fae called Niall. Niall wants territory in Boston and he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants, including starting war with basically every other preternatural creature in the city.
There’s a lot of new characters in this book, but I think it was pretty easy to keep track of everyone since they get introduced gradually through the story. But if you do run into problems and forget who’s who, the author does provide a handy glossary list at the end of the book. So, if you’re reading this by e-book or a physical copy, it is there if you need it.
The most important new character in this is of course Riordan Maguire. He’s head of his selkie clan and we find out the his clan has also been targeted by Niall. I did not know much, if anything, about selkies before this book. Are selkies usually regarded as fae rather than werecreatures? Because they are fae in this book. Riordan and members of his clan (like his older brother and younger sister) came from Ireland to the United States a few hundred years ago and have made Boston their home. Riordan himself is almost 400 years old, and can live longer yet, so I guess you could call this an age-gap romance between Riordan and Wade, but I think it’s a relief that Riordan can live a long life so there’s no worries on that front for Wade.
Selkies have a sealskin that they can take off and on at will and here, they can transform it into anything for them to wear. It allows them to shift into seals and swim in the water. It’s also a weakness for selkies because if their sealskin winds up in nefarious hands, they would essentially be enslaved to that person.
I thought the concept of selkies was fascinating because we didn’t really see any selkies in the previous Soulbound books and I think as seals they’re both cute but scary. As you can imagine, there’s a fair bit of fighting and action that takes place underneath the water to showcase the selkies and their fighting abilities. This book is quite action-packed like the author’s previous books and I really enjoyed the fighting scenes! There’s still of course fights that take place in the air so Wade can join in when he’s in his dragon form.
Other creatures that show up in this book are more fae, more werecreatures, some witches, and vampires. There’s new vampires in the mix, but also my favorite vampire and succubus from the Soulbound series also makes a dramatic appearance and I loved seeing them again! Wade has no love lost for those two but beggars can’t be choosers if you’ve got to work together to get rid of a common enemy.
There are sex scenes in this book and they’re very much in line with how sex scenes were written in the previous Soulbound series (so what I’m saying is that Wade and Riordan’s relationship is very much NOT like Spencer and Takoma’s and is more akin to Patrick and Jono). It’s very respectful and we get to see just why Riordan is clearly the best love interest for Wade.
I’m curious what other readers think about Wade’s relationship with Patrick and Jono, his alphas and the guys who saved him years ago. Because I always saw Patrick and Jono more like father figures for Wade (much like Seth and Dom for Mark in K.A. Merikan’s Guns n’ Boys series). BUT I felt like I was thrown for a loop a little bit in this book when Riordan refers to Patrick as Wade’s older brother. Is that what everyone else is thinking and I’ve been reading into this all wrong? Or is this just Riordan’s initial impression and he’s wrong. LET ME KNOW.
This book is very serious because there’s a lot of mayhem going on due to Niall wrecking havoc on Boston, but because this book is partially from Wade’s point-of-view, it’s still very funny at times. I love that other characters have absolutely no idea how to handle Wade and what to make of him. He knows how to lock down the essence that makes him a dragon so all everyone can sense is that he just looks and smells like a regular mundane human. The only reason they know something is a little off about him is the amount of food he eats.
AND SPEAKING OF FOOD…there’s a lot of snacking in this book. Be prepared to snack your way through this book as you’re reading or make sure to read this on a full stomach. Because Wade does not disappoint and finds every opportunity to eat. I also crave cannoli after reading this book.
I don’t know what I find more hilarious - when people start realizing Wade’s a dragon or that he’s from the New York City god pack (who they are in awe of and fear in equal measure). Even Riordan is scared at the prospect of looking after Wade because if Wade even gets a scratch on him, he’s worried the New York City god pack will go after everyone in Boston.
As someone who regularly reads millionaire and billionaire romances, I feel like this next thing shouldn’t bother me, but it does? Marek, a seer and billionaire who is part of the New York City god pack, loans his private jet to Wade for use, right? But is it really necessary to just go jetsetting back and forth between New York City and Boston so much? Maybe it’s because I live in Texas and just grew up in the southern US, but the distance doesn’t even seem far enough to begin to justify the use of the private jet like this.
We do get sprinklings of Patrick and Jono throughout this book checking up on Wade. I think it’s a lot of fun when Patrick meets Riordan for the first time and I’ve missed Jono. I don’t recall this from the end of the Soulbound series but did we know Jono’s god patron, Fenrir, wouldn’t stick around forever? I thought that was a thing for life. I guess there’s no real reason for him to stay around if he doesn’t have to, but it kind of makes me sad Fenrir’s left.
I am looking forward to the audiobook because Gary Furlong is back and his performance and narration is much needed for me to get a sense of names and accents. I trust he’ll do a fabulous job as always and can’t wait to see if he adds the slight hint of a Boston accent to Riordan’s voice.
There’s technically no epilogue in this book. BUT. There’s a bonus scene available at the end that you can download that’s basically a very cute epilogue. I highly recommend reading that too for more Wade and Riordan cuteness.
This book was a great way to wrap up the Soulbound universe of books and for everyone to get their HEA. I certainly wouldn’t mind MORE books in this world if Hailey Turner ever saw fit to return and write some more about the characters and their stories (like, we did meet a lot of new characters in this book alone that I wouldn’t mind seeing get their HEAs). But this works as a nice bow to the universe even if we never get more books. I’m already very tempted to restart the books from the beginning and reread the story all over again. It was such a treat for us readers that the author went back and wrote Wade’s story and we got to see and experience his growth and journey into becoming a confident young man and finding the best love of his life he could possibly ask for.
***Thanks to Valentine PR for giving me this e-ARC to read and review!***
Secondhand Skin is a side story set in Hailey Turner’s fabulous Soulbound universe. After the Soulbound series tied up, Turner has rewarded us with two spin offs featuring side characters from the main series. Wade has always been one of my favorite series characters and so I was thrilled to hear he was getting his own story.
Read Jay’s and Kris's buddy review in its entirety here.
3.5 stars for Gary Furlong. I usually do like him as a narrator but here, at times, it was like he was speed reading during his narration. When he spoke with each of the character's voices for the most part he was great. I did not like his voice for Wade but the attitude did seem to match. Overall it was still good and enjoyable to listen to. He does still manage to bring the story to life.
I think I have a new favorite Hailey couple!! (Sorry Patrick and Jono)
I knew I would love Wade. I've always loved Wade. And Hailey does such a wonderful job of not making him into a caricature just because he has a lot of quirkier traits. I knew I would like this book, but was worried I wouldn't be able to love it, because what love interest could ever be good enough? The answer is Riordan!! He is exactly what should be picked for Wade with his loyalty, strength, kindness, and devotion to making Wade feel comfortable. The action was of course amazing, I still love this world Hailey has built (I would not suggest reading this as a standalone, I think you'd be very lost), but this one the romance is the star and I know I will revisit this one often!!
It's wonderful when you get to drop back into a world that you've already gotten to know - the characters, the magic - and it is a bit of a surprise when you realize that this new book is a spin off of that series. So, I had the pleasure of getting to come back to the Soulbound gang - specifically the New York god pack - to follow along with dragon Wade Espinoza as he travels to Boston to help a selkie pack who finds themselves in a bit of trouble.
Wade ends up meeting the alpha of that pack - Riordan Maguire - as they deal with a faelord that is trying to take over their territory and holding the selkie skin of one of their pack members hostage.
What makes this series so fun is that we've already met Wade and he is such a fun and hilarious character. This book, though, has a more mature Wade ( well, somewhat more mature) but with all of his quirks.....snacks anyone?
Wade ends up being the person sent to help when his alpha duo has other responsibilities at the time and finds himself in the middle of a much bigger situation. Riordan is an older selkie who realizes what Wade is to him before Wade does.
As usual, there is plenty of action, a bunch of hilarious drama and a dragon who finds himself in the middle of some unexpected feelings. I listened to the audio version and the narration by Gary Furlong made for a fun and easy listen.
Secondhand Skin is the second spin-off of Hailey Turner’s fabulous Soulboundseries of inventive, action-packed urban fantasy novels set mostly in an AU New York City. Probably the most beloved secondary character of the series is Wade Espinoza, whom we first met as a traumatised teen who had been enslaved by a trickster god and then rescued and sort of adopted by the two progagonists of the series, Patrick Collins and Jono DeVere, becoming an integral member of their family and pack over the course of the series. Wade often provided excellent comic relief in the stories – his habit of eating everything in sight and being constantly on the look-out for his next snack (he’s a growing fire dragon, after all!), combined with some typically teenaged surliness and snark was pitch perfect and he very quickly established himself as a reader favourite.
But the final book in the Soulbound series wasn’t the last we were destined to see of Wade. After an important secondary role in last year’s Resurrection Reprise, he’s back as the hero of his own story (and to get his well deserved HEA) in Secondhand Skin – and I’m delighted to say that the author has done him proud.
While this story stands alone, I hesitate to recommend reading or listening to it without having at least some familiarity with the characters and storylines featured in the Soulbound books. (And there may be spoilers for that series in this review.)
Although Patrick and Jono’s territory begins and ends in New York City, it’s not unusual for them to receive requests for help from outside, and when one such request comes from the Boston god pack, they send Wade to deal with it as they’re unable to go themselves. The pack’s dire refused to discuss the problem over the phone, so Wade has no idea what he might be heading into, but that doesn’t faze him in the least so he heads to Boston to find out what’s going on.
What can I say, I really enjoyed this one! I very much liked both of the characters, who felt very distinct and had a lovely connection. The dragon/selkie combo was excellent, and the plotting here was engaging. Lower steam than I'd personally prefer, but it made sense in context. A bit too info-dumpy at times, and I definitely think this is best read soon after reading the main series as there were a number of times I had to remember and reorient since it's been years since I read the books. Definitely not the best as a standalone given all the worldbuilding context from the previous books, but a great read for fans of the main series.
Wade!!! This book was perfect in the way it gave Wade a chance at love, at opening up to someone outside of his pack, at choosing a person for himself, someone who makes him happy. I feel fate or magic played a big role here because for both it was love at first sight, sparks almost literally flying. Soulmates! Riordan being a selkie was so interesting; I think I've never actually read a story with selkies in it. I liked how protective he immediately was towards Wade, him being 400 years older and all. We know we don't mind age gaps when it comes to the supernatural. They get a free pass from me. But his protectiveness wasn't over the fact he was older, but it was born from the way Wade reacted to him, how he could see the fragility beyond the cocky attitude. When he went all "WHO HURT YOU?" I must admit I screeched. It was epic. Wade couldn't have found a better boyfriend. The plot as usual was action packed and very intriguing and mysterious. We saw soooo many familiar faces, some I was not expecting! Seeing the pack together living their best life, being happy, it just made me so emotional. They've been through so much, they deserve this. I missed them a lot. I care so much for them and wish them only the best, so seeing updates about what they've been doing since we last saw them was refreshing. It gave me joy. The new characters from Boston were all likeable in their own way: the godpack, the clan, the faes, the magic users, the vampires. It was so interesting and funny seeing Wade dealing with everything by himself. He's a big boy now, and he's got himself his first boyfriend. You know what I really loved? With Patrick and Jono we get the insta attraction, they jumped immediately into bed and a relationship, like super fast. And with Spencer and Tacoma it's insta lust, and the sweet sweet taste of the forbidden. Then we have Wade and Riordan and their slow and cute approach, the undeniable force like a magnet between them, but with them getting to know each other one conversation at a time, one vulnerability shown at a time, one step closer, respecting boundaries, all the consent, nothing rushed, starting a relationship at their own pace. They're not in a rush, with being very long lasting beings. Food!! This wouldn't be a Wade book if there wasn't food galore. So many snacks, Wade constantly eating, like so much. I loved seeing people being amused by his eating habits. And I loved how you could see his heart opening when he was actually sharing his food with Riordan. That, there, THAT is enough to let you know those two are meant to be together.
Long story short, with this rambling of a review that doesn't really look like a review, Hailey Turner is a genius, a master of words and I will never tired of giving my support and heart! I wish there could be a million other Soulbound Universe books, but if these are all we're getting, there's really no way I'm complaining. These books have my whole heart and soul. I love them with my whole being!
Any day where we get more SOULBOUND books is a good day and SECONDHAND SKIN was so good! Wade was a beloved side character in the original series and I'm so happy to see this confident and grown up version of him. Seeing Wade taking on an active role in the pack and working on missions was so much fun. And Wade has clearly learned his negotiation skills from the Patrick Collins School of IDGAF. While Wade has grown up he's still the snack obsessed goofball that we know and love and I adored the cute moments when he was flustered by Riordan and how attractive he found him. Wade was just the sweetest and should be protected at all costs! And luckily Riordan is the perfect man for the job.
A selkie and leader of his clan, Riordan was compassionate, loyal, and patient and I adored the way he worked to protect Wade and made sure he was always comfortable. Riordan was equal parts smitten and baffled by Wade (at least until he figured out what he was) and I loved those moments. The spice is much less frequent in this book but its a good fit considering Wade's past and the way he needed to ease into his first relationship.
And of course we got come cameos from the original series: Patrick and Jono obviously but also other members of the New York City god pack, some of Patrick's old team, and even our favorite infamous vampire and his lovely partner. I feel like this was probably the official last goodbye to this series and that's bittersweet so I guess I'll just be re-reading it regularly because I love these characters and this world so much.
This totally surpassed all of my expectations. It was so well written, with a great cast of characters, and a story line I absolutely loved. It was exciting, thrilling, and yup, I couldn't put it down. I loved how the author stayed true to Wade's character, although he fell in love, he never lost his hunger for good food, at ALL times! 😂 Riordan was the perfect mate. He totally gave himself over to Wade, caring and treasuring him, and most importantly (considering Wade 's past), winning his trust❤️The mystery was a good one, well written with lots of twists and turns, it was great to see how Wade's self-confidence had grown and how much self belief he had in himself. It was also amusing how he tried to fool Patrick, Jono etc that everything was fine and he was in no danger 🙄😊
Hailey Turner 's world-building is, as usual , impeccable, and all of the characters are complex and well-developed, with their own unique strengths and flaws. I love how well she can balance all the elements of fantasy and mystery. If you're a fan of the Soulbond Universe, Secondhand Skin is a must-read. It's a captivating and unforgettable, tale, that left me wanting more.
Having just completed listening to the audible version of this I cannot recommend it enough. Gary Furlong, (one of the best narrators out there), in my opinion, does a cracking job bringing the story to life. He captures Wade's personality perfectly. He also caught the excitement of the story, and the growth of the relationship between Wade and Riordan. I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely listen again.
I enjoyed seeing the Soulbound cast again. Wade was charming as always. However, I don't think it quite worked as a standalone. The character cameos saved the book for me because neither romance nor plot were good enough to make me want to keep reading:
- The chemistry between Wade and his LI wasn't there. Riordan was ok as a character, but I didn't buy the mutual instant attraction -- though I also detest instalove in general, so YMMV. I get that it is a supernatural instalove thing, but imo a couple should still be interesting without that. The development was also super rushed as a result.
- The plot was also not good enough to carry the book. While it was funny at first to watch Wade roflstomp every encounter and obstacle thanks to either his OP dragon powers or his OP connections (aka the Soulbound cast), it did get stale fast.
It's not a book I would reread or recommend for those unfamiliar with the Soulbound series. It was fun as an extended epilogue of sorts, but overstayed its welcome a little bit.
I got this as an ARC that said it could be a standalone, and I think that's just not true. It sounds like a lot of the reviews enjoyed it and already know a lot about this world and these characters. I haven't read anything by this author, and I found the amount of characters and the lore dumps to be pretty chaotic and messy and overwhelming. The story itself maybe has some promise, but I think it needed a few more rounds of editing. I also found the tone to be a bit confusing - like it can't decide if it's fantasy or contemporary. Overall, this was fine, but I don't think this author's writing style is for me.
Wade’s book, Secondhand Skin, is really a perfect conclusion to the Soulbound universe. It has all the elements I have come to love from the series, from intense action scenes to heartwarming moments and of course a lot of sass. It really sums up everything that made the original series such a success.
At the heart of the story is Wade, our lovable, sassy dragon, who has grown remarkably since his first appearance. Watching him mature, find his confidence, and finally experience love has been a lovely journey. I really like the way Hailey has crafted Wade's journey, giving him room to shine (even more than before) and pairing him with a partner like Riordan, who is truly worthy of our Wade. I loved that Riordan is a selkie, which brought a fresh perspective and gave way to further expand the world-building of this series. I enjoyed watching how his protective instincts towards Wade immediately flare up and how he could see the vulnerability behind the sass and Wade’s cheerful, confident attitude. Their relationship develops slowly with a focus on mutual respect and understanding, and that in turn made their bond feel really authentic.
The plot is as action-packed and intriguing as ever, with a mix of land, air and sea battles so vividly written that you can feel the tension as if you were taking part in it yourself. Also, it is worth to note, don’t read this book on an empty stomach or without snacks. Wade’s love of food is legendary, and has been the running theme throughout the series. And his constant snacking is still both amusing and charming. But when he starts sharing his food with Riordan...swoon...it was a very clever yet subtle move that gave us a powerful indication of their deepening relationship.
As always, the world-building is top-notch. I genuinely admire Hailey’s ability to create a universe that feels both expansive and intimate. And the action scenes are so well-crafted that they completely draw you in and make it easy to get lost in the high-stakes battles and intricate plot.
I also really loved the new characters from Boston. They bring new energy to this established universe, and each of them bring their own unique charm that adds something extra to the story. But it was also great to see some familiar faces return. It brought a bit of nostalgia and made the story even more enjoyable by letting us see where (and how) they are now.
In short, Wade’s book really hits all the right notes. It perfectly balances action, romance, and character development, while also providing a satisfying and heartfelt ending to a much loved series. While it’s hard to say goodbye to this wonderfully crafted universe and characters, it is comforting to know they can always be revisited whenever the mood strikes.
Secondhand Skin is a novel set in a Soulbound universe by Hailey Turner, and it can be read as a standalone, but... I would highly recommend reading the Soulbound series and Resurrection Surprise (Spencer's book) beforehand, as it gives you background on the world and characters, and will also enhance your experience in general.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my unbiased review.
