rep: lesbian, bisexual, asexual and aromantic, hard of hearing / deaf

guys I wish I could explain why a book about teenagers nearly dying due to vengeful ghosts is so comforting but I can’t put it into words. reading these books has been like a warm hug from friends, it perfectly captures what found family is supposed to be and I wanna hold them all close and protect them

I really enjoyed this, super fast paced and easy to read with important conversations around sexuality, grief, trauma and healing. I cannot wait to dive into the next one <3

I received a review copy from the publishers as part of the blog tour in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.

WHO WATCHES THIS PLACE returns to the world of paranormal investigations, this time with a creepy painting.

Ever since reading THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, I have found paintings in books super creepy and this book leans into them. Paintings that move out of the corner of your eye. Things coming out of paintings. And more. It is a really enjoyable, spooky romp that feels like a deliberate attempt to show off more of the genre after the more typical haunted house of WHAT WALKS THESE HALLS.

The book has a brief one page summary of the previous book (something I wish more books did!) Because this series is effectively a series of standalones - new mysteries facing the same characters - the summary focuses more on who the characters are and where they ended up emotionally at the end of WHAT WALKS THESE HALLS. This book does, though cover the events of WHAT WALKS THESE FALLS as they grapple with the trauma of what happened.

The characters have been through a lot and are not all dealing with it well. There are five narrators this time, with Raven and Éabha returning to explore how their gifts have changed. The other three narrators did not speak last book. I loved getting a chance to see into Davis and Fionn's heads.

This book contains aroace rep! Fionn is one of the new narrators and through him the book explores how isolating and lonely it can be to be the only aroace person in a friendship group as the others start to pair up and prioritise the romantic over the platonic. I loved the argument he and Arthur got into about it, Arthur unable to see how he was hurting his friend by always choosing hit romance first and his "well, you'll get it when you get a partner" stance. Those blindnesses and assumptions are so common and I liked seeing them tackled head on.

The last of the new narrators is a new character, Audrey. She's a sceptic, convinced the team are creating hoaxes to exploit others and is determined to expose them with an article. I really enjoyed her addition to the team - she gave the series a chance to show its methods and explore the sceptical side of the business. I am very sceptical about these things, but I still wanted her to change her mind and join the team.

In all, a very satisfying read and I hope we get another instalment!

So you know a book is going to be good when it gives you the wugh within the first couple of pages, I understand that security guard far too well.

On a more serious note Clarkin has not disappointed with the second in her series, which takes place in the aftermath of WWTH. She is 100% now one of the modern YA voices that I am looking forward to reading more of and I hope that she is read widely.

I genuinely found this book to be more immersive for me than the first and I think its because we got to see the story unfold and the actions that lead to consequences from so many angles. The multi-narrative approach is not something I'm normally a fan off but here it was done deftly and added nuanced layers to the story.

The level of rep for the LGBTQIA+ community is fantastic and never feels forced. She captures what happens when the dynamics within groups change and what it can be to be lonely in a crowded room. The book itself is creepy enough to captivate. I found myself in the strange position of looking forward to reading it while also knowing I was going to get what I'm calling the wughs about it (but in the best possible way).

I loved the introduction of Audrey into the gang as a journalistic sceptic who slowly realizes that she might in fact be wrong about things. It was also great to see all the previous characters grow, so often someone gets left behind and remains stagnant, this was not the case here at all. I particularly appreciated the growth of Eabha and Raven and how that dynamic built over the course of the story.

Overall fantastic YA that I will happily be recommending to all the YA readers in my circle and very much looking forward to more of Amy's work.

As sequels go this was a good one.
I finished it still wanting more, which is a good sign.

I felt with one more edit this would definitely have been a five star.

I like the Character development, especially Ravens.

The reasons why I took a star away:
In the first 100pages of the book "Said" feels over used.
Some of the sentences are clunky and need rereading, which took me out of the story.
"Had had" was used several times and is just a pet peeve of mine.
Repetitive word use in the same sentence.
And one blatant continuity error.

But trust me, if I can get over those things to give the book 4 stars it's a good book.

Would like Lizzie to feature more in future. I think Fionn would like that too haha.

More than delivers on the promise of the first book - the character development is great and the plot is completely gripping. Already looking forward to number three.

With a perfectly paced plot and engaging side stories that weave their way seamlessly into the main narrative, this book (along with it’s predecessor, What Walks These Halls) has made it to the top of my fantastic horror pile. As the team are struggling to make ends meet, and make a living, they are presented with an intriguing case that they simply can’t turn down. And this particular ghost is utterly, truly sinister…evil. The fullness of the story rolls in like an oncoming storm; the thunder rumbling in the distance getting closer and closer…and then, a shattering bolt of lightning that none of them are prepared for. The conflicts between the friends help build the atmosphere until you almost can’t bear to continue…but you can’t stop reading either. Sceptical, quick-witted journalist Audrey, who is determined to break a story that will expose PSI to the world is an exceptional addition that increases the drama and asks the reader to think; to pay attention. Honestly, the plot, the pace, the setting, the emotional baggage grumbling in the background, the evocative twists and turns; all create a tale that will leave you glued to the page and on the edge of your seat. This book will haunt your dreams (or rather nightmares) for a long time. Absolutely brilliant!

A really nice sequel! I really love these characters. I really appreciate that you can see peoples growth from book 1, but they're still working on things. I liked seeing their relationships grow and change, and thought the emotional twists were devastating and really engaging.

However, I did think that the multi POV was slightly too much here. Having a shorter list of POV characters would have made it easier to be invested in their stories. The first book had 4 main ones, this one had them from about 7 or 8, which made them all a little harder to be invested in.

This was enough to lose one star from me, but overall I really like this series and cannot wait to read the third one when it comes out!
