Finn
Being the underboss for the most powerful mafia Don this side of the Mississippi requires a certain level of detachment. After vowing to myself I would never have a family, too afraid of what it’d be like to lose them, I pride myself in being so disconnected from all feelings. Especially when having emotions can get you killed in this line of work, I don’t need the distraction.

When my world is turned upside down from a single lapse of judgment, will I go back on my vow? Will I be able to balance the life of a reaper and a family man, or will the lines get so blurred that the damage is irreparable?

Skylar
Getting out before things get bad are what many people hope for, but rarely any victims achieve. Swearing I’d never marry again, I set out on a new adventure across the state. Plans and aspirations in tow, I decide I’m going to take my life back. However, after one drunken night with the most charismatic man, I find myself in a surprising predicament. Days drag into weeks as I work to avoid him. I make mission impossible happen changing shifts with coworkers when I know he’ll be in. My situation doesn’t get any better, the stress rising that much higher. There’s only so much time before the past comes back to bite.

What will happen when I finally come clean? How will I adjust to my new life?

I found this book to be well written and easy to read. The second half had me on the edge of my seat trying to guess what would happen. I will be honest...it didn't go the way I expected. The story is heavy on the violence, so be mindful of the trigger warnings!

Split Persona

This is book three in the Crumbling Empire series. These can be read as a series or stand alone. I read them as stand alones and this review contains no spoilers for the previous books :)

Finn is a mafia boss. That’s his whole life. After watching his father be killed, he vows to never have a family because then he has a weakness.

Skylar has left her abusive husband. When she meets Finn at a bar, she thinks that it will be a one and done. When Finn protects her from her ex and something surprising happens, she knows they’re going to be together more than she initially thought.

I loved this book. So freaking much. And that ending. 🤯🤯🤯

Wow!!

I am in love with this story. It is so emotional and once I started I could not put it down. I was definitely not expecting that ending, but it was very well written.

Check the trigger warning for sure with this one. I'm so glad that author chose to include the hotline numbers along with the book.

This was a really funny story of two people who have experienced damaging events in their lives who accidentally find each other and can’t seem to avoid each other- no matter how much they try. This book is part of a series, but each book is a stand alone and can be read that way. I only wish I had read the first two books because they certainly would have given me more background than what I had going into this story, but again, that is not necessary to be able to understand everything.
Skylar has finally left her marriage and the abuse at her husbands hand. Having married extremely young, Skylar is only looking to take back everything in her life that she has lost over these terrible years. She has one drunken night of fun which she believes will lead to nothing- and she is fine with that- until her one night shows up in her section at her job. Now she is doing everything in her power to avoid him- but will she be able to or will this mystery man get his way?
Finn decided early on that relationships were not going to be his thing. After witnessing the death of his father, Finn knew he would never be able to bring anyone into the world he lived in, especially after that pesky voice, Craven, showed up. Finn has always been connected to this voice, more so than he probably should have been. After one night with Skylar however, his entire outlook changes. Will he be able to keep the “girl next door” he met at the bar for more than one night and keep her safe from his job and Craven or will he lose that battle and Skylar will be in more danger than she was with her ex?
This book is an up and down ride from start to finish that makes you feel so many things all at once. Certainly trigger warning heavy so 100% read those before delving in but if none of those bother you, prepare to be taken on the ride of your life! The chemistry between Skylar and Finn is off the pages hot and you really feel that from their first meeting. This book really does a wonderful job in the discussion of mental illness and the acceptance by someone else of a disease like Finn’s. I feel that this is one topic that is severely underrepresented in stories, especially romance novels- although I feel that trend is changing, so it was really nice to see something this heavy discussed and led me to ugly cry more than once throughout the story. My emotions were certainly played and it made the experience of this story that much better. This is one story that will stay with me for a very long time!
Such a great surprise author find that I seriously can’t wait to get my hands on the previous books to know more about Finn, Declan and their mafia lives and see just how everything came to play out leading up to this story.

Split Persona by Maia Terry
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶

This book is the third book in its series. It’s told from the perspective of Finn and Skylar’s life and how they came to be. I can’t wait to see what Maia comes up with next.

This book was so unexpected and had twists you didn't see coming. The author conveys the emotions in the book so perfectly that you will feel them as you read. I was hooked from page one til the last sentence.

I just finished this book and my emotions are all over the place. The first half to three quarters of the book is about their crazy relationship. The last quarter of the book will have you crying your eyes out.

Split persona is the book I want to hate, but I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the best story I’ve ever read. Maia takes you on a true emotional rollercoaster with this one! I have never cried over a book as much as I cried over Split Persona!

The second half had me on the edge of my seat trying to guess what would happen. I will be honest, it didn't go the way I expected. The story is heavy on the violence, so be mindful of trigger warnings!

Trigger warnings:
Graphic Violence Including Murder
Graphic Sexual Content
Suicidal Ideations
Intense Torture Methods
Pregnancy
Mental Health Issues
Physical and Emotional Abuse

I listened to the audiobook and oh man did it hurt. I had so many mixed emotions throughout this entire book. There were so many happy moments and just as many sad moments. I loved every second of this book even when it was revealing my heart. Listening to the narration of this book was so heart wrenching but so amazing to listen to at the same time and I 100% recommend listening to it if you want to read it! Nowhere Eternity did such a phenomenal job taking you along the ride and making you feel like you’re in the book with these characters feeling everything this feel. It takes a lot for me to cry at books but this one had me sobbing so hard by the end of it. I will definitely be reading more books by Maia Terry in the future!

⚠️ But please do check your trigger warnings as this book does have topics that may be hard for some readers. ⚠️

This audiobook broke my heart. The vulnerability of this book as it delves into the mental illness that Finn has dealt with since he was a child and how that trickles into his relationship with Skylar is heartbreakingly realistic. Even if you don’t personally deal with the mental illness he has, the situations that they face that are attributed to his mental illness, are painfully raw. The ending of this book had me crying like no tomorrow. As a lover of sad books, this book is everything I needed for a good cry sesh.

This was an incredibly dark, heavy and emotional read. And I loved it!

I thought Terry did a good job with the tension between Finn and Skylar and the reasons for conflict between them were very believable and understandable. Through Finn, Terry gave a wonderful portrayal of someone struggling with their mental health in what felt like a realistic portrayal. Skylar's sweet, soft and thoughtful character was a nice balm to the heavier aspects of the story, and Finn's job. Together they were a wonderful couple.

Without giving anything specific away, there are technically two endings available. I read the original ending first and then the alternative ending. I recommend reading the original first as well because, while emotionally heavy, it fits the story so well and it was very well written.

I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Nowhere Eternity. He did an absolutely fantastic job. He successfully portrayed all of the emotions for the characters and added another layer to the story. And can he please read the rest of the series??

I cannot wait to read more by Terry and listen to more by Nowhere Eternity. Please mind the triggers and warnings, and be aware that this is a heavy read (like seriously!). If that's all good with you, then I highly recommend this book!

So much going on in this book. First and foremost, this book shines a light on mental health in a way rarely seen. Finley McHale is the underboss to mafia leader, Declan O'Connor. After watching his father be tortured and killed, Fin started to hear a voice. A voice that craved torture. Fin satisfied this voice by doing a little torturing himself. Everything was fine until he met Skylar. He wanted to be a better man for Skylar.

Skylar finally divorced her verbally abusive husband. She was making a new life for herself only to find out that one night would lead to a lifetime with a mafia leader. Fin let Skylar in, she knew about the voice and still wanted him. Skylar made a family with Fin and could rely on Declan and Natalia for support. What can they do when the voice comes back louder than ever?

Skylar is still dealing with her ex-husband not fully accepting that they are over. Can she let Fin protect her? Whose going to protect him? Readers will go inside a mind that is dealing with another voice in their head. Readers will understand a little more how it feels to be in that position.

I hated what mental illness did to Fin and Skylar's family but I enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Split Persona by Maia Terry

Finn and Skylar’s story
Book 3 in the Crumbling Empire
(It is out early she had no self control)

Tissues, grab freakin tissues!

⚠️CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS⚠️

Skylar married young, not long after graduating high school young. Not long after though his true self started showing. Skylar being smart and not afraid to hold her ground filed for divorce, leaving was the best thing she ever did. Since the divorce wasn’t fully final she couldn’t leave the state just yet and Jersey isn’t that big so she went as far as she could hoping to lay low. All she wanted to do was hit a bar and forget her worries, little did she know finding a way to forget would land her in the owner of say bars office bent over his desk. She never figured she’d see him again, but what happens 3 months later…yep you guessed it Mr. Finn McHale is sitting in her section at her waitressing job.

Finn the right hand to the most powerful man on the east coast. His job is dangerous, it’s already cost him his father. Finn has had enough trauma that one day he wakes up to a voice in his hears, a blood lust voice. Finn has swore off every getting close to anyone, NO dating, NO wife, NO starting a family. A life a solitude would be better than putting someone he loved at risk. Until one night in his bar that he inherited from his father, a classic “girl walks into a bar” moment changes his whole outlook on his future.

Will Skylars past rear its head and ruin her future with a man she met by total chance, or will the voice inside Finns head scare her away and ruin his chance at the happiness he never thought he’d have? You will for sure want to find out!

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I balled so auto 5⭐️)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (more plot heavy, but Mr. Finley 🫠)

Maia has a special place in my reader heart since she was the first author I ever arc read for, and I will forever read her books. Evan though I am an emotional freakin wreck and she’s been yelled at for it. Love you still though you are grounded, but I love Finns story.

DONT. FOREGET. THE. TISSUES!

P.S…If you haven’t read Dec and Nat’s duet, Fetal Vow & Mended Oath don’t walk, RUN.

Grab your tissues for this one cause your going to need them trust me!

This book took me through every emotion possible, it was a wild ride that's for sure, it had me gripped from the start to finish, keeping me on the edge of my seat, I just couldn't put it down. This book definitely had me by the balls. This is book 3 in the series but can be read as standalones.

Finn is our MMC, he is the underboss to the mafia leader Declan but he's also his best friend. Finn has been through alot, witnessing his father's Torture and death can make anyone go crazy, but Finn ends up with a voice inside his head that is evil and out for blood, that things goes by the name craven! He makes the people pay that took his father away. Finn swears he will never date, marry or have a family that way they will never get hurt . But that's all about to change.

Skylar is our FMC, she married Jeff when she was young and it didn't take long for him to be abusive. After so many years off taking it, she breaks and files for divorce, packs her backs and leaves him in the dust Finally feeling free. She can't leave until the divorce is done but she gets as far away as possible. Once settled in her hotel so goes for a drink and that's where she meets Finn they both are taking with each other and that's when they're story begins.

This book will have you on your knees and your heart in your throat. The writing and the characters where beautiful. It's emotional and tragic. It's action packed with drama, spice, loss, love ,struggle and so much more. The last few chapters in this killed me off it had me ugly crying so bad. Finn will always have a place In my heart. I loved their story even if it was beautifully tragic. I highly recommend.

Split Person is book three of four of the Crumbling Empire series and can be read as a standalone. I would like to clarify that I listened to the audiobook and it was fantastic! I’m not a huge audio fan, but life has been busy and I’ve really been missing my bookish escape. The audio is narrated by Nowhere Eternity and the listening time is 6 hours and 38 minutes. Tropes include: MF, mafia, dark themes, mental health rep, surprise pregnancy, touch her and d!e, strong FMC, cinnamon roll MMC, morally black alter ego, dual POV. Triggers include: gr@phic v!0lence, gr@ph!c smexy scenes, unaliving, SI, intense t0rt^re methods, pregnancy, mental health issues, and physical and emotional abu$e. Please note that this book does not have an HEA. It is a beautifully real love story.

When I read, I am interested in the point of view (POV), the plot, and the spice. I prefer dual POV, I don’t want a predictable or bland plot, and I like my books HOT!

This story is told from first-person dual POV by the female main character (Skylar) and main male character (Finn). Dual POV is well-suited to this story as the MMC struggles with an alter ego. I enjoyed both characters very much – including the dark parts of Finn’s mind. I’m not going to provide a plot summary because I think the blurb is sufficient. I will say that while this book doesn’t have an HEA, it was well worth the tears I shed as it really is a beautiful story.

I rated the spice a 3/5 because it correlates well with the story, is well-written, and there isn’t more spice than plot.

🌶🌶🌶🌶

It took me incredibly long before I could sit and put into words how I feel. Not because this book wasn't absolutely fantastic, but because I was a hot freaking mess and a ball of mush.

This book 🖤 Finn's story, is just so emotional. His split persona, Craven, tries so hard to overrule him and take charge. Prior to meeting Skylar, Craven and Finn were connected deeply. But Skylar changed Finn's life for the better, and Finn knew he needed Craven to take a back seat.

Craven does NOT like being placed on the back burner and causes some serious havoc in Finn's life. Finn reaches an almost breaking point, which causes him to demand Declan, making an ultimate promise to him.

I will NOT give into ANY more details because I want you to feel all the godd@mn things I felt 🤣

This book is going to take you on the biggest emotional roller coaster you have ever been on. Grab that entire box of tissues and be prepared. This is my warning, and once you get through it, you know I wasn't messing around.

🔥 Be sure to check the triggers and take them seriously. This book touches on mental health problems, so please make sure you're comfortable ahead of time!

@authormaiaterry I cannot begin to thank you enough for allowing me to be on your alpha team for this, but also... I have a side of anger bursting through the seams right now with all of my feelings! Lol. I love you and appreciate you so much!!

You know the rule for after you read a book that emotionally destroys you? Well, I completely disregarded it. I immediately wrote up my review and aggressively hit the star button 🤣 Obviously after a while to think on this book and its ending I have finally come to my senses.

This book was both beautiful and tragic. I loved getting more of Finn’s character and getting to see how him and Skylar began their relationship. Maia Terry has a way of getting me hooked immediately and making sure I feel for all of the characters! She has written a beautiful love story with tragedy intertwined. However my favorite part of this book is to see how much Finn loves his family and what he is willing to do for them whether I completely agree or not.

If you have not read the Crumbling Empire series I am sitting here urging you to do so! It’s a great Mafia series to read and fly through!🥰

I would also like to apologize to Maia if you saw my original response and would like to blame it on my emotional state afterwards. Naturally I saw the error in my ways and have given a completely well thought out review/response🤣🤣

I loved reading some of the events in Fatal Vow (#1) and Mended Oath (#2) from Finn's POV ... it was a great addition to the Crumbling Empire series.

Maia did a great job introducing my least favorite trope without being so cringe, and I love it! I also loved the representation of mental illness in this story.

This story was so crushing, and some was believable and, therefore, broke me even more. You just have to read it to understand.

*I have to be honest, I am glad that I held off on reading this until now, because I am crushed, so I can not even imagine how crushed Maia is after writing this.

A dark mafia romance read

Finn, right hand of a mob boss, happens to see Skylar, a woman running from her husband, at his bar on the night before her divorce is final. As the story progresses sparks fly, violence is not always denied, and they may not last since they have differing opinions on what they view as right. Split Persona is a dark mafia romance read that may not guarantee an ending the readers will be happy with. The author is very truthful about their notes and trigger warnings so pay attention to them before reading. Ihave read both versions of the book and can honestly say that an ugly cry was involved in my reading this version.

Nope… this book ruined me. I refuse to believe the ending bi just found out there is an alternate ending, so I will be reading that and continue to live in la la land.

BUT aside from that, this book was fantastic. Listening to it was… interesting to say the least. I didn’t realize the same person narrated both POV’s, so that threw me for a loop - I had to pause and actually read the synopsis (I never do). The narrator did a WONDERFUL job though and I will be checking out more of the books he’s narrated as well!

I had a good cry and I can’t wait to read/listen to the other two books before this one.

Now, I heal ❤️‍🩹

Split Persona is book 3 in the Crumbling Empire series and is Finn and Skylars story. This is my first read by this author and she had me a huge emotional mess with this story! This author carries us on quite a journey with Finn and Skylar and all thry endure. It would be a good idea to check the trigger warnings if you have triggers. I didn't read the previous books in this series and I completely feel that Split Persona can absolutely be read as a standalone. But, after reading this one I can't help but wonder what I've deprived myself of so now back to book 1.

Oh my fúcking god. This book was everything. I knew it was going to end in no HEA because I purposefully look for books with no HEA (toxic I know but I love it). Finn and Skylar 🥹 ugh i love these two , I especially loved the hint of Mafia you got within the book. I also loved the relationship between Finn and his best friend Declan <3 I had to sit and process this book for a minute cause the ending of the book just takes the biggest turn. My favorite part was Declan bringing the flowers , iykyk🥹

Split Persona is Book 3 of the Crumbling Empire Series. This book is so emotional, and I loved it. I absolutely love books that just rip me apart emotionally and makes me ugly cry. I love the storyline and the characters. The Chemistry between Finn and Skylar is so palatable. Even though it is in a series it can be read as a standalone. I cannot wait to read more by Maia Terry.

As always pay attention to trigger warnings, what I like you may not.

Happy Reading!
