Bound by Dragons #2

Kingdom of Spirits

Rate this book
Dragon riders. Grumpy Fae/sunshine human. And a curse that wakes ancient dark magic.

Her life, or her love. Tahlia can’t have both.

When Tahlia’s commander dies under mysterious circumstances, the only suspect is her former mentor’s daughter…their new commander. If Tahlia accuses her without proof, she’ll lose everything she’s worked for. Including her soul-bonded dragon.

To make matters worse, something is wrong with her captain. Marius won't meet her gaze, and he won't utter one word about the new commander. Like, not a syllable. As if maybe he isn’t able.

But Talia can't just walk away from him. A pull deep within her says they might be fated mates, and he is about to set off on a secret mission. She can't let him go alone, not with that creepy, clouded look in his eyes. And not with the fate of the dragon riders resting in such dangerous hands.

Dark magic and evil forces are rising in Kingdom of Spirits, and Tahlia is determined to uncover the truth. Even if it means risking her life.

If you liked Fourth Wing, but are searching for a lighter-hearted read with humor and just a dash of spice, this series is perfect for you.

This is NOT a standalone! Check out Bound by Dragons Book One for Talia and Marius's first encounter.

With fae, dragons, dragon riders, banter, found family, and touch her and die, this fantasy romance will have you flipping pages all night long.

***This series is upper YA/NA and contains mature language and situations.

Alisha never disappoints in her books! They are always fun and exciting with enough adventure, cute spice, and banter to keep me intrigued. This book is a great quick read, and now I need the third one!!! Oh and Trevian is my favorite.

This was a fantastic sequel! It built on a couple of my biggest questions from book 1 and did a great job answering them. I'm really impressed with how much character and world building Klapheke can fit in a shorter book. I'm also super excited for the new questions that this book brought up and to see what happens in book 3.

*ARC Review*

I'm glad I was able to read Talia and Marius' firat encounter in Bound by Dragons, because it gave me a better understanding for the gripping romantasy that ensued in the Kingdom of Spirits.

Although still more lighthearted and shorter than Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, this book did seem to take on a darker note with it's political Intrigue and action packed last few chapters.

The world building is epic and beautifully captivating. The new storyline that Alisha has created near the end of the book (no spoilers here) that I'm hoping is used in future books is so intriguing as to what the implocations are for Talias' future.

If you're looking for a fun quick getaway romantasy reads in a fantasy setting, with dragons, mates and curses, this read is ideal. An epic adventure full of danger, love and magic.

First of all thank you so much to Alisha for sending me an arc of the book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 ⭐️ from me. I hadn’t read the first book so I bought it to read before starting the arc for a bit of context. I ended up loving it so I had high expectations for this one.
It has Dragons and dragon riders, do I need to say anything else?
If you liked Fourth Wing you will definitely like this series. It has enemies to lovers, grumpy x sunshine, betrayal, romance and a little bit of spice, friendship and loyalty, faes and half humans.
I’ve got to say again that Alisha writes so beautifully that you feel you’re actually there while reading.
I could clearly picture and see the kingdom of Spirits in my mind and all the characters we meet there.
Only downside is it’s a small book and I prefer chunky ones, nonetheless I cannot wait for the third one.

Kingdom Of Spirits Review
Alisha Klapheke

Rating 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kingdom of Spirits, Book 2 in the Bound by Dragons series. Bound by Dragons was the first book and I loved it, but this book was even better. If you enjoy faes, dragons and dragon riders, found family, touch her and ☠️, betrayal, a dash of spice and grumpy / sunshine you will love Kingdom of Spirits.

This is a short read that had me hooked from the beginning. So much so that I read the book in one sitting.

I thoroughly recommend this book. I recommend however you read Bound by Dragons first.

Genre: Fantasy Romance

I really enjoy Alisha’s books and this one was no different. I would suggest reading Bound by Dragons first so you are familiar with the characters. I enjoyed that one a little more… it was cozier. This one has more spice and I wasn’t sure how she would make it a sequel but she did a great job. I enjoyed the storyline and it sets up nicely for book 3.

🖤Read if you like:

Curses
Fated mates
Secrets
Giants

Wraiths/ghosts

When I first read Bound by Dragons I thought that was it for Thalia and Marius. I've never been so happy to be wrong. Alisha has continued their story in Kingdom of Spirits, the second book in the Bound by Dragons series.

Thalia has the kind of bright soul you can't help but be drawn to, she's joyful, adventurous, and a free spirit. While Marius likes order and control and is intense. They are complete opposites that somehow fit perfectly together. I love that both of them are all in from the start. They have the sweetest romance she brings out a playfulness in him and he makes her a little nervous.

The plot was pretty great. Beyond the romance stuff with Thalia and Marius, I didn't expect the darker undertone that this book carried. The racism and bullying, a suspicious death, and a dangerous quest, but it was the dark history of the dragon riders that got me. The story felt like a campfire ghost story filled with danger and magic only it was real events. There were some emotional moments and a lot of action. Alisha pulled everything together in a way that made total sense, it was just seamless.

I cannot tell you how much of loved Kingdom of Spirits. Thalia and Marius' story was beyond what I could have wanted for them. An epic adventure full of danger, love, and magic. This was like the perfect book and it truly reads like it could be the final book in their story but I'm happy that I couldn't be more wrong, Alisha has a third book planned. Hopefully, it won't be too long before I get my hands on Crown and Dragon.

I’m sorry I DNF this book, I found myself feeling like i couldnt gel with this book. Which I don’t know why I enjoyed the first in this series but the 2nd one I really struggled. If anyone asks me what happened I can’t honestly answer as I was so confused what was going on. Thank You Alisha for letting me arc read for you, and I’m sorry I couldn’t give a better review.

This book was pretty good, and an easy read! I liked the plotline of the curse, and thought Ophelia was a good villain. I wish we got to see more scenes with the FMC and MMC, but that's okay!

Short, fun, and spicier than book one! Loving that each book has its own plot. Marius is a total “German shepherd boyfriend”—protective, loyal, and all heart for Tahlia. On to book 3!

The sequel to Bound by Dragons had such a different, but equally great, vibe! I enjoyed getting to know Tahlia, Marius and Fara, as well as the Order of the Mist Knights.

The second book is a bit longer, which was also great and allowed for more depth and world-building.

I was fortunate to be an ARC reader for this book in exchange for an honest review. Here is my review.

This is the second time i have ever gave an arc 5 stars. But before i go into my review, i just want to make it clear i have not read the first book, and i have not read anything else of miss Alisha Klapheke's work (that is about to change!)

If you loved fourth wing, you would absolutely love this, this series has dragon riders, it has romance, it has everything you want in a fantasy book. I wont post spoilers but ill try and summarize the book for you as best as i can without revealing anything.

- This book follows the story of Talia, I am unsure of what happened in the first book, However something happens to marius her captain (and someone she loves) which makes him act...strange?. Hes not himself, Something terrible happens to the previous commander and marius just refuses to speak about it. Talia kinda knows what happened and who is responsible but she has absolutely no proof, and who would believe her anyway?

- marius sets off on a secret mission, but talia follows him with Fara and the dragons, and it leads them into a place thats very dangerous. this is where the book gets very interesting, it leads them to a very dangerous creature (wont spoil this) Will talia be able to stop it? Youll have to find out!

I hope i didnt post many spoilers, once the book is released and more people have started to read it i will come back and re edit this to make it more detailed with the spoiler warning attatched.

Overall thoughts: im very looking forward to this series and ill have to get the first book to read it all properly and see if my guesses were correct 🤣 my only downside is this book was a little short, i prefare long books but even so, i still enjoyed it and i devoured it, i cant wait to see where this series goes and good luck on the debut! 🥰

Was I EXCITED when I saw Alisha was going to write more in this fantabulous world! Was I EXCITED when I started reading this book! Was I EXCITED to see where Thalia goes next, what Thalia does next, because, let's get real, Tahlia does things TAHLIA'S way! I adore her impetus character, which, though it inevitably leads her into difficult, unthinkable situations, her plotting and planning pays off, mostly... she now is living her dream! She's made it into the academy, she's made it as a dragon rider, which was forbidden to half breeds such as she, she's even snagged the yummy High Captain, Marius. But her joy is marred by the likes of Maewenn, of Ophelia, of a few of the riders who can't and won't accept a half breed, who push her to the limits of endurance and tolerance. And then, the sudden death of the Commander sets a whole new ball rolling! A ball full of mystery, a ball only Tahlia can unravel...but even she was not prepared for what she discovered.

Free spirited Tahlia is a fun character to get to know and the more I do, the more I love her. I got shivers down my spine when she bonded with her dragon, especially when I saw the name they had chosen...a small piece of me in this fabulous tale! When the final piece of their bond clicked into place, heck, I had to shout out loud! How divine! Tahlia is the most persistent and obstinate, tenacious character! Her puzzle solving mechanism flares to life when something doesn't fit and Ophelia doesn't fit right, Gaius' death doesn't fit right, Marius withdrawing doesn't fit right, so what does our impetuous Tahlia do? She resolves, resolutely, against all protocol, to find the missing pieces. Which, of course, has her heading straight into danger! She is, without doubt, a character I'll carry with me for a long long time! But so to is Fara, eho delights me no end! She's sharp and snarky and sensible and keeps Tahlia in check, or tries to! What a truly beautiful friendship they have, supportive and loving. And not forgetting Marius....

Marius warms my heart to such a degree, I fear it might self combust! This big, strong, fierce dragon rider is stern and disciplined on the outside but is all gooey and mushy on the inside. He's so measured, every action is through through thoroughly, no impulsiveness for him! And so passionate for all he holds dear and one is definitely Tahlia! I adore the way he bumbles and fumbles with expressing himself to the very gregarious Tahlia! I'm not sure how the author manages it but every single character she brings to life, she infuses a need for me to want to be their best friends! The author also managed to stop my heart a few times, where I forgot to breathe from the intensity of her storytelling! But she's forgiven, willingly, for her ability to enthrall me every single time!

Besides an unbelievably entertaining and fun read, I love the humour artfully strewn about, very subtly yet very effectively. The mystery and the gorgeous love blossoming is to die for, intriguing, immersive and utterly fascinating, as each element of the story slots in, as each layer is peeled back, as each step in this delight to read, carries me over the threshold of the triumphs as they clear it, to rapturous applause by me for another excellent read by an excellent author who never fails to impress!

Kingdom of Spirits is the perfect continuation of the Bound by Dragons Series! It took everything I absolutely adored about Bound By Dragons and increased it exponentially! The dragons and the bonds were more intense and deepened, the magic was expanded, the romance was deliciously spicy, and the villians were darker and more deliriously evil *insert mad cackle*!

Tahlia and Marius are getting to know each other better—as a couple and as knights. They cannot help but fall for each other and despite Tahlia’s half human nature they are determined to be together and for Tahlia to win over her fellow knights. But with the Commander’s plea, an unexpected death, and Marius’ strange new behavior Tahlia suddenly finds herself on an adventure filled with a surely mate, mysterious ruins, and a plague that just might kill them all.

The romance in this book was top notch. I absolutely adore both Tahlia and Marius. Tahlia is fun and spunky and a tad but mischievous and Marius is oh so broody but in a seductive and delicious way. They really compliment and bring out the best in one another.

Then their is all the fun little world building tidbits! I always enjoy a great story that the details just burst from the pages and you know…without a doubt…the author did her research. And this one was written wonderfully!

But my favorite aspect of this story was the Kingdom of Spirits itself. I loved the unknown and mysteriousness that surrounded it. It was extremely intriguing and I enjoyed every last word of it.

So yep…if you love an awesome story filled with wonderful dragons, fantastic characters, sweet but yet so very spicy romance, handsome Fae Males, and mischievous half humans, the evil that lurks both around us and that that is yet to be discovered, and the unknown you simply must read Kingdom of Spirits!

Tahlia is a half-fae who has attempted to join the Order of the Mist Knights, which was unheard of as she was also half-human, and many of the dragon riders hated her on sight. She had also captured the heart of her captain when Marius was supposed to be betrothed to Ophelia, the commander's daughter, who hated her even worse than the others. Then Gaius, the commander was killed, and Tahlia knew in her heart that it was his own daughter who had killed him, but if she accused her no one would believe her. Furthermore Marius changed towards her not even deigning to talk to her or explain, as he set off on a personal quest. Tahlia is very headstrong and seems to call danger to her and she was damned if she would let the love of her life out of her sight, so she decided to follow him. He ventured into the Kingdom of Spirits, a realm which was desolate and full of evil magical creatures out for vengeance. On this adventure Tahlia, Marius and Fara plus their two dragons are tested to their limits. The women realise that Marius has been put under a curse, and with the help of a benevolent ghost called Trevain they face the plague demon known as Katk who has been raised from his long slumber, and was out to kill every single mistgold fae. Can he be stopped? If no one can stop him Tahlia definitely would try. She had to save her friends and her beloved and break his curse! I loved this 2nd book in the Bound by Dragons series and cannot wait to read the next book as the ending makes us wait in anticipation for the next adventure. I love the dragons in this series as well as Fara who is such a hoot but oh so loyal!

Kingdom of Spirits, Book 2 in the Bound by Dragons series, is a unique blend of fantasy and romance. It continues the captivating story of Talia, Marius, the enigmatic Mist Knights, and the awe-inspiring dragon riders. This upper YA/NA series, while containing some mature language and situations, is a must-read for those who crave adventure and magic in their fantasy novels.

If you enjoy the sunshine & grumpy tropes in fantasy books, you will love Talia and Marius. Thalia is still the ever-optimistic, danger-searching, excitement-seeking, while Marius remains the responsible, rule-abiding one. Still, we see more and more cracks in Marius as he falls deeper and deeper for Talia. As she tries to find her place amidst Mist Knight's order, something much more sinister is heading their way. Dark magic and evil forces rise, and betrayal looms over dragon riders. Add to the midst a curse that has overtaken Marius, and chaos threatens to ruin them all.

Kingdom of Spirits is a thrilling, fast-paced romantasy that I found immensely enjoyable. It's a whirlwind of excitement, with betrayals, adventurous quests, and a rich tapestry of love and friendship. What sets it apart is its unique blend of romance and fantasy, creating a world that is both familiar and intriguingly different.

If you enjoy tropes such as
- faes,
- dragons and dragon riders,
- found family,
- touch her and perish,
- betrayal,
- a dash of spice,
- grumpy fae/sunshine human,
you will love Kingdom of Spirits, a lighter-hearted read with humor and just a dash of spice.

I'm eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Talia and Marius's adventure! Thank you, Alisha, for gifting me the ARC and allowing me to be a part of this thrilling journey.

“Tahlia, you are the light in my day. We will get through this to whatever waits for us on the other side.”

If you are looking for a Romantasy novel with RomCom feels… look no further! I loved this book! It has a nice cozy pace, hilarious banter, gripping action, and epic world-building. Marius and Tahlia are one of my favorite fantasy couples. Marius is more reserved, a little uptight, and a protocol-following grumpy Captain who can be surprisingly playful when it comes to Thalia. And Thalia, always the optimist, is a lover of the skies, sassy, fearless half-human who lives to push his buttons and get him all riled up. Their romance is sweet and a bit salty, just like their personalities.

Kingdom of Spirits takes place two weeks after the events of Bound By Dragons and we find ourselves back with the knights and their dragons and one fiercely loyal, but scary squire. There’s more political intrigue, a mysterious goddess, revelations I did not expect, and plenty of swoony moments. Get ready to laugh, scream, cry, and be enchanted by this sweet romantasy story.

* Just a quick note that this book is open-door with a few short steamy scenes and a flashback.

A Couple of Favorite Quotes:

“You can’t help yourself. Vexing me is your new favorite pastime.”

Kingdom of Spirits by Alisha Klapheke is book two in the Bound By Dragons Series. I will mention that you have to read the first book before this one. But let me say when I found out that Tahlia and Marius’ story was going to be continued from Bound by Dragons (book one) I was beyond excited. Then when I finally read the description for this it just took it up another notch. I devoured this book in one sitting, I could not put my kindle down. This had everything I could have wanted in it… grade A banter, humor, angst for days, a dash of deception, so much action and of course love. It also has some of my favorite tropes such as grumpy/sunshine, found family and of course magic! My absolute favorite is how the author just further expanded upon Tahlia and Marius, it honestly just keeps getting better and better. This story took me on such an adventure with things going against them. I loved how everything was described it was as if I was there in the pages. The book was written so well with a plot that just pulls you in and before you know it you’ve reached the end. I’m looking forward to more from this author as I’m definitely a fan. I can’t recommend Alisha Klapheke enough, these books don’t disappoint. Two thumbs way up!

I'm in love with this series. The pacing of this second instalment is almost as perfect as the first. I blazed through it in record time--and really, there are some serious nail-biting moments. Klapheke likes to put these characters through the wringer.

The spice in this one hits the spot superbly. Marius and Thalia make such a great couple, and I simply love how she pushes all his buttons. He's really amusing when frustrated. The twist on the Touch her and die trope to touch her and she dies worked brilliantly, and added so much to the tension in the story.

The dragons are absolutely wonderful and I adore their strong characters. Lija, particularly, is such a sweetheart. Totally adore this bad-ass, protective dragon. She is so awesome.

Anyone, who enjoys dragon rider fantasy, spicy romance, fae and half-fae with all the prejudices and racism that go with it, magic, terrifying giant monsters, and awesome teams that make you love the squad, then you HAVE to read this series. It's simply unputdownable!

Now, don't mind me while I go cry a little because this one only just released and I have to wait for the next book in this awesome series!

ARC Review

So this is the second book of (Bound by Dragons Series) and Alisha gave me the opportunity to read the first book just to give me a little taste of this amazing series!! So before you read this book read the first book. And no you won’t regret it. Now for a little bit of a glimpse of what is in this beautiful well written story and may I just say it also flowed seamlessly. I am going to try my best in not spoiling this to pieces.

Ok so the MMC Marius is of course my favorite male brute High Captain that everyone thinks is scary except for the spit fire FMC Tahlia ( Mist Knight). Well they get a rude awakening because Ophelia I call the (wicked witch) decides to dip into some dark magic, deceiving, cursing and awakened a monster giant. Yeah she did a lot of bad stuff!! And of course there is a quest and some romance in this. Also some challenging decisions Tahlia must make. That is all I am going to say so I don’t spoil it. This is a hands down series I recommend.

My favorite thing about this book and the first book is that it focuses on the plot and adventure with some romance. It was really cool to learn more about the history, dragons and magic in the world of this series making me grow even more interested to see what happens next. 👀
I love both Tahlia and Marius with my whole heart and this book made me love them even more. This book definitely tugs at your heartstrings, but it also makes you root for the two more. 🤭
I love how the tropes and elements are grumpyxsunshine, fated mates, dragon riders, found family, folkloric magic, lots of action, banter galore, dragon/rider bond. 🫶 And some spice, but not a lot which I don’t mind. This is more of a adventure, fast paced story telling book with romance and just a hint of spice!
Can’t wait to read and see what happens in book 3! (ps it does leave off on a cliffhanger, but it’s a satisfying cliffhanger that moves to book 3 😊)

Kingdom of Spirits, book 2 in Alisha Klapheke's Bound by Dragons series, is an amazing rollercoaster ride of adventure and terror. Marius and Tahlia are driven to great depths to not only prove their love, but to save their lives and those of Fara and their dragons as well. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with adventure, curses, evil magic, a plague inducing malevolent giant, dragons, and bonding rituals. The tale is written in such a realistic manner that you feel as if you are flying alongside the Myst Knights fighting the evil giant. The characters are well developed and engaging. The plight of Marius and Tahlia becomes personal as they fight for each other and their lives searching for a cure for the curse and the evil taint threatening the lives of all the Mistgold Fae. Overall, Kingdom of Spirits is an excellent choice and a great addition to a wonderful series. I highly recommend it!

I liked the unique ways that the villain, in this story, used to create a particular blend of chaos, terror, and upset. Not to mention, the creative way the FMC had to defeat said villain. I think those elements made this book stand out a bit more, and made the character arcs have a bit more depth, since the stakes are higher and demand more of the characters, both main and side. The creative uses of the villain and fmc/mc's magic and their dragons also makes for a more interesting read overall. Also, Fara and her random and surprisingly aggressive and bloodthirsty quips kind of made this book for me. The random and unexpected humor was a nice break from the action and peril Marius (mc) and Tahlia (fmc) find themselves in for the majority of the book. I also really liked that we get glimpses of what lija is thinking as well.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and am interested to see where the third book is going to take Marius and Tahlia.

Such an amazing and near perfect sequel! This is the continuation of the story started in Bound By Dragons and follows Tahlia and Marius’ live story. But this isn’t just some sweet and cheesy love story, it also has dragon riding and explores the bonding of dragons and their riders. I love Fara and truly think she’s the epitome of a true best friend - snarky and irritated a lot, but also 100% ready, willing & able to throw down and unalive anyone who upsets her bestie, Tahlia.

This was packed full of adventure, mystery and even a curse. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romantasy books. The spice level remains low in my opinion, but I tend to read very explicit erotica type books regularly because you just tend to care far less about what people may think as you approach 50 and life is too short to not read what I enjoy. But if you don’t frequently read borderline porn, then you might find this spicy.

I’m liking where this series is going…

After reading Bound by Dragons when it released I was intrigued by the addition to the world of Dragons and Fae. There is some character crossover but it can be read as an independent series.

I love how this new series gives a How to Train Your Dragon vibe but with spice and adult aged characters. There are multiple species of dragons and different types of Fae so there is great variety and lots of secondary characters that create a sense of camaraderie. (Which I adore!)

This book picks up after book 1 when Tahlia has become a sworn knight and bonds with her dragon.

A m/f fantasy romance. Lots of twists, magic, adventure, battles and flying with dragons. Curses and betrayal and fated mates.

Dual povs told in third person.

Main couple -
High Captain Marius Leos Valentius and his Heartsworn Ragewing
Knight Tahlia and her Seabreak Vodalija

Steam - spicy scenes included

Kingdom of Spirits was unique to me, and I enjoyed the unique mash up between Fantasy and a Rom Com. Tahlia and Marius have developed further into their relationship when the commander unexpectedly and mysteriously dies. Marius becomes distant from Tahlia, and she suspects he's hiding something, especially when he goes off on a secret mission. Tahlia soon learns that Marius has been cursed and can not touch her without killing her or even speak a word about his curse. Tahlia must decide to risk her life helping break Marius' curse or risk her heart.

The mash between Fantasy and a Rom Com was really well done, and you really felt equal aspects of both. The best part of this, by far, was the banter! Spot on teasing and bickering throughout the book. There is a little spice, but it mostly focuses on a strong banter. I enjoyed it and can not wait to read more!
