Sophie McKenzie is a bit of a teen institution here in the UK, and has garnered lots of critical acclaim and numerous awards. She's got the ideas to write a great story, and always puts a lot of thought and effort into her characterisation.

The Medusa Project series is an interesting premise, and is paced as fast as TV show 24. I didn't like this second instalment as much as the first, though I still enjoyed it and whizzed through it. My problem with this particular book was Ketty's narration. She wasn't as captivating as Nico, and at times seemed to be overly dependent on the other three Medusa kids. I didn't gel with her or the other characters as much this time around, though I do think The Hostage had a much better storyline than The Set-Up.

I love the idea of the Medusa gene, and all the special powers Nico, Ketty, Ed and Dylan have found themselves with. As each book progresses and is told from the point of view of a different character, more information about their powers is revealed, and they get the chance to use them in different environments. Think teenage X-Men in England, and you'll get what I mean.

The Rescue, the fourth book in the series, is due for release in July, and I'm really looking forward to it. Ed will be at the forefront this time, along with his pretty cool but uncontrollable mind reading talent and shy nature. It sounds like a recipe for disaster to me!

It is an action book that features super powers. It is book 2 in the series of the medusa project and follows on from book 1. I really enjoyed reading this book as it was very action packed and also it was a good page turner.

Read this review and more on my blog.

The Hostage is the second book in the Medusa Project series.

As a whole I enjoyed this novel, and I am interesting in seeing how this story is going to progress. For me it was the writing style that really annoyed me. Also, I am so sorry Mum and Dad if I sounded half as bad as the kids in the book did. If you told me that the word 'babe' was used on almost every other page I would not be surprised.

None of the characters we that interesting, even thought they have special powers. These powers are Telekinesis, Visions, Mid-reading and immunity to damage. With 4 teenagers having to deal with these powers, as well a school and having to do missions with these powers, you would have thought that this would have made an awesome combination.

The plot was very predictable. I was able to guess what was going to happen during the majority of the novel. This left me not guessing why things were going as they were and I got bored easily.

Overall an interesting read, but do not expect a mind-blowing one.

Thoughts before the read:

When I came across this in a charity shop, I bought it, remembering that I'd read the first one... but not that I only gave it two stars.

And after:

Ketty is a total fucking sap and it's a wonder she didn't get everyone killed. And my god, when will they all stop whining about everything? Someone's life is in danger and you're all busy having spats and giving each other the cold shoulder over tiny things.

Stop whimpering, Ketty, and make use of those couple of brain cells. As it stands - these four couldn't truthfully stand a chance against an even slightly sophisticated criminal (let alone one talented enough to hack the MoD). Believability = 0. This series MIGHT work as middle grade, but I really think it's too weak and the plot too obvious to engage much of the YA audience.

The Hostage is from a different point of view than its previous book, The Set-Up. I’m not sure whether I liked the change of POV. Whilst there was more action that took place in this book, the previous book was portrayed from a more awkward and shy character, desperately trying to ensure the girl he liked liked him back. It was nice. Some parts and vocabulary used in this book were repetitive and there seemed to be a few plot holes and places where the character’s actions didn’t make sense. Overall, the book wasn’t that bad and I think I’ll continue to read the series.

Completed reading it on 8.8.20..... its my 1st hand experience with a fiction thriller.... when i started reading... It was hard to put it down .... The language is very simple and u can easily drift though the book... Just took 2 days to read that too lazily..... All the characters... The story line up... The phychic abilities....its usage.... The build up of action, suspense... Conclusion.... Everything has been set up so intelligently..... i must say there are no loose ends in the book.... Everything seems so realistic... Like u r watching an action packed thriller..that u dont want to miss.. i definitely want to read more series of this MEDUSA PROJECT

So somehow when I originally read the Medusa Project I missed this book out! So this was my first time reading it. I'd have to say it's not my favourite book in the series just because I think Ketty is a very fleeting character. I found myself wanting to yell so many times especially when she put her brothers life before hundreds of other people's lives. But it was still a good book and was perfect for the build up of the main Foster plot line.

(LIBRARY BOOK) This book has totally changed my opinion on Ketty, She literally has the personality of a soggy cabbage and adds close to nothing to the book. I'm kind of intrigued by the new blossoming friendship between her and Dylan though. I also like that Dylan shows more vulnerability in this book- instead of acting like she doesn't care about anything. But in general I wouldn't read this again just because all Ketty does is talk about how much she likes her Nico, which is stupid since she was all over Ed until Nico showed her the tiniest bit of attention.

I read this for like 3 days straight and I love how the story getting better and better especially the characters, I really adore on how Dylan get more lines and develop her characteristic in here. I'm hoping for the best plot twist in the 'Rescue' the 3rd part of this book. I'm excited to read the next part because I'm so hooked of this series, to think that this is my first time to read a book like this....

THE SERIES CONTINUES THIS TIME WITH KETTY'S VIEW, NICO'S GIRLFRIEND THE FIRST BOOK WAS NICO'S POINT OF VIEW SO IT IS GREAT THAT THE AUTHOR CHANGES THE STORY A BIT FURTHER EACH TIME BY HAVING A VIEW FROM ONE OF THE CHRACHTERS BUT AT THE SAME TIME STICKING WITH THE OTHER MAIN PEOPLE IN THE STORY. AGAIN I REALLY ENJOYED IT AND AN EASY READ BUT NOT QUITE A 5 STAR BOOK FOR ME!

I recently finished this book and i thought it was amazing. It was written by a different character this time but that made it even better. At first i thought after the first one the story line would be very similar but it wasn't at all. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone

The Hostage is book 2 in the series.

I absolutely hated Ketty in this book. She was mostly crying and going off on her own, only thinking about her brother and no one else. And she kept making the same mistakes.

I read this because the plot of the first one was enough to keep me going but the characters were basically motivated by petty jealousy and poor chat - annoying and unbelievable. Its a shame because the premise was interesting. Will not be continuing with this series.

As always, Sophie Mackenzie has impressed me with this amazing sequel. It does not disappoint and after finishing i was desperate for the next. I love following all of the characters in these books even if some do have a slight plot twist!

I could not stop reading, really encapsulating, really got my adrenaline running loved it would totally recommend to anyone, but make sure you read the first book first (the step up) as it would be confusing otherwise. Love how Sophie mckenzie changes whose perspective it is in each book.
