Maddie

Ashton's a wreck of the man I knew a few months ago, a soul missing his greatest piece. I'm caught in the crossfire, a woman desiring an unattainable man. A man who's still pining after his ex and probably always will be.

Every so often, I catch him looking at me a certain way. A way that tells me he might want something more. But there's too much heartache there, and I'd be a fool to let someone in who I already know will burn me.

Ashton

Maddie's the wildcard in my code. The woman who might break every boundary I've set. She's beautiful, kind, and the gentlest soul I've ever encountered. But I can't get involved with anyone again -- that was the promise I made to myself when my ex broke my heart.

Problem is, at the rate Maddie and I are going, she's about to bypass every command I've ever written. I just can't let her succeed.

Rachel Radner’s Coded is a heartfelt, friends to lovers, contemporary romance written in K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes Worlds.

Maddie's empathic mind can feel the despair from the diner she just accidentally helped humiliate. Never did she imagine that months later she'd hire him to design a website for her failing restaurant, or that they'd become friends, or that she'd fall in love with him.

Ashton cannot for the life of him, get over how wrong his code for his ex was. He'll never get over Vanessa, or how wrong he was about her and their relationship. But then along comes this woman and she brings his heart to life. Has he found the woman to make him break his vow of never getting involved with another woman who might hurt him?

These two...so many insecurities, so much pain - I hurt for them both, and I loved their story. How they went from friends to more, and how much they both grew so much, especially Ashton. He's not the alpha male we're all so fond of in romance these days, no, he's sensitive and smart, and quite adorable. He does display latent anger issues, but the man has been working on them for years, and only slipped once since. I can't help but love a guy who knows there's a problem, admits it, and actively works on that problem. This slightly out of the box romance is wonderful, and a perfect fit for Bromberg's Everyday Heroes World.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for a voluntary and honest review.

Coded had no sense of time whatsoever. There were two moments in-between chapters for a 3 months later or 3 weeks later, but if it weren't for those, it would feel like a day, week, or even month has passed. Ashton originally said it would take no more than a week to set up Maddie's website, but I think it took longer. However, it was hard to tell because there was no sense of how long it had been. All I know is that they kept meeting or thinking about the other.

I wasn't a fan of Maddie and Simon's language when they spoke to each other, or Simon in general. He was seen astonishingly little and he annoyed me every time he appeared. It felt like the author was trying too hard with his character - the stereotypical gay guy who says things like "... you go and get it, gurl," and "boo-boo" and "Pahlease. I never doubted you, honey." Sure, he's written as demisexual and pansexual, but we never see evidence of that other than Maddie telling us. He has a love interest for maybe a chapter to show Maddie's empath abilities, but we never even meet the other guy. It's like when you let your friend copy your work and tell them to change a couple of things so it doesn't seem like it's a copy of yours. But you can tell.

I also hated Maddie's language whenever she was with Simon. I don't like the dumbed-down text-talk, especially when they're being spoken instead of typed. For example, Maddie actually said "AF" and "homey" [in relation to a person], and Maddie called Simon "Si" once or twice. [If it's anything I hate more than spoken text-talk, it's strange nicknames that sound unnatural to me.] In fact, with most of the language, the characters jumped from sounding in their 30s to being a teenager. With the "chef's kiss" and "AF" and whatnot, it felt like a teen wrote the book - or someone tried too hard to incorporate today's slang.

Because of the timeline and the pacing, it was hard to connect with the characters and with the romance between Maddie and Ashton. I don't know how old anyone is (that could be my bad though), there's rarely a mention of family or friends (except for Ashton's dad maybe over halfway through) and it was hard believing in the romance. It felt like there were no developments until, suddenly, boom, they were crushing hard. Also, one moment Maddie feels the need to rush over to Ashton's condo - but there's no mention of him ever giving her his direct address. It was before they were together, so I have no clue how Maddie would know where he lived.

Character-wise, I liked Maddie, for the most part. Ashton was okay, though his constant crying did eventually get on my nerves [there was so much guys] and there was one mention of violence, in the beginning, nothing for almost the entire book, and then violence. That felt out of character. It might have been brought to the reader's attention in the beginning, but nothing upheld that or justified his action as a character until the end, which made it feel like it was coming out of nowhere. And if Ashton hated his boss so much, why didn't he just quit and move somewhere that was full of prospective coders? He clearly had enough to go to Italy and buy all these expensive things, so it didn't make sense why he would stick around.

Coded wasn't... awful, but it felt like a compilation of every cheesy, cliche romance book that hit every stereotype and had zero sense of time.

i'm honestly a little gobsmacked right now. the beginning was very promising and i expected a gruff, heart-broken man and a bubbly woman who would be the opposite of him and i believe i did get that in a sense.

this book went at a break-neck speed for me. i barely had time to catch my breath as ashton and maddie went from barely acquainted strangers, to client and worker to friends and suddenly lovers. it went far too fast for me to see a connection develop between them. in addition to that, the book was too short which kind of makes the timeline makes sense. still, everything went at a barely discernible pace. not to mention the whole intuitive empath thing with maddie. oh, and that ending. it was all so sudden.

i truly wanted to enjoy this book but it didn't want out for me. if the author were to make a re-write, i would no doubt read this book. it has so much potential, if only the book was longer.

thank you to the author and greys promo for providing me with an e-arc copy.

This is my first Rachel Radner book and I was intrigued by having an empath as a main character.

You’re the healthiest broken person I’ve ever met,” I tease. “How do you figure?” He runs a hand through his hair. “Don’t most people in your situation brush off all their feelings?”

Maddie and Ashton first meet as strangers at her restaurant. His favorite restaurant was where he planned to propose to Vanessa (the self-centered bitch). Of course, as an empath, Maddie knew what he planned to do and jumped the gun on the celebration right where Vanessa broke up with him.  Awkward. The sadness and heartache that passed between Maddie and Ashton that night was unforgettable.  Jump to months later, Maddie's restaurant is in financial trouble and she needs someone to upgrade her website. Enter a very reluctant Ashton who swore to never set foot in that restaurant again. It's destiny that brings them together, but can they get past their fears to let each other in.

Maddie's empathic abilities are mind-blowing and a little creepy. It takes women's intuition to a whole other level. I was delighted that Ashton wasn't all that freaked out about it. In fact, he caught on fairly quickly. Probably because he is a sensitive guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. When his girlfriend of 6 years breaks up with him, my heart broke as he cried in the middle of a restaurant. Yes, he's not an alpha male (there is one moment though...), but a sweet computer programmer who codifies his feelings to make sense of them.  In other words, he compartmentalizes and analyzes his life the same way he codes websites.  Geeky, huh?  Endearing, actually. Maddie is a lovely person who always wants to save people from themselves, but it always backfires on her leaving her alone romantically.  It appears her abilities scare most people off and I was heartsick at her childhood memories. Thankfully, she has her wonderful best friend (well, only friend) Simon who is a bit pushy and judgy, but only because he wants to see her happy. Eventually, Ashton and Maddie have a happy ever ending after clearing up some angsty misunderstandings.

I am delighted to recommend this friends-to-lovers romantic story about taking chances and knowing, and owning, your worth.

Thank you to Ms. Radner for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

Coded takes place in The Everyday Heroes world. I enjoyed this latest addition to the world, and it was also my first book by Rachel Radner.

This book was a fast, sweet, and slow-burn romance; I liked the emotions, the characters, and how everything played out in this story.

Maddie is so sweet, and she has such a big heart. Maddie is an empath who is always trying to fix broken people; she meets Ashton at her restaurant, and she can feel how broken he ends after how the night plays out because of Vanessa. Months later, they will meet again when Maddie's restaurant is not going through the best financial situation, and she needs help with her website.

Ashton was different from the characters I'm used to, but he was so sweet I can't help but love him. Ashton is a coder who analyzes life the same way he does with codes. He swore he got all the codes solved for his relationship, but Vanessa broke his heart; months later, he is back at the restaurant where everything happened, but this time for a very different reason.

Maddie & Ashton have both been through things that left some pain and insecurities. Maddie's huge heart and empath way have gotten her hurt before, so she is scared of getting hurt once again. Ashton thinks he will never get over Vanessa, but she honestly did him a favor by leaving because she was awful. They become friends, but things turn into more between them; these two had to overcome their insecurities before moving forward with what they feel for the other, but they are so cute and perfect for each other.

I look forward to reading more from this author!

Coded by Rachel Radner

Ashton

Ashton is a coder who sees other people as a code that has to be decipher. His relationships and his own feelings are a code that he had to crack or recode depending on his feelings and situations he is in. To his surprise the one relationship he thought was perfect and he understood completely, was a lie. Now he has to look back and see where the code was broken.

From the moment he met Maddie, he couldn't crack her code and he is surprised by how easily she can read him. This start an interesting adventure of healing and love.

Maddie

Maddie is an empath that is very optimistic and always wants to fix broken people. She meets Ashton and can feel all the broken codes and wants to help him fix it. She's afraid of giving all of herself to another broken man trying to fix him. Worst part is that he is very attractive, and there is an undeniable connection between them.

Overall review

Ashton and Maddie make a cute couple. I really enjoying reading the way they both saw the world and their views on relationships with other people. At the beginning to the book, Ashton is at his lowest and at some moments I was afraid he hadn't fully mourned his last relationship before falling in love with Maddie.

It very fast pace, no dull chapter. Very quick read. It is strangers to "friends" to lovers.

I give this book a 4 out of 5. I did enjoy the overall experience about this book.

Wow, Rachel has done it again!

In her latest book Coded we meet Maddie and Ashton. As you read this story the words lifted off the page and I felt as if I was seeing the story in front of me unfold. Maddie is the owner of a restaurant; Ashton is a Web Designer. Their lives cross paths the night Ashton is going to propose to his girlfriend. The night does not go as planned and heart break sets in. Ashton and Maddie paths cross again and are force to work together. As they work together, they grow together in a story that had me hooked from the first line. As their story unfolders we learn about their pass and Ashton Ex comes back into the picture to throw a wrench in the gears. You will follow their relationship and see the bond that brings them together.

This story was written beautifully, and you feel the pain both have in their lives, and you grow with them as they grow. This is a heartwarming story that if it is meant to be it will happen!

This is another must read by Rachel Radner!!

Thank you, Rachel and Greys for sending me a copy of this book to read and review

This book follows the story of Ashton and Maddie.

Ashton is a man who has had his heartbroken by the woman he felt had strengthened his code and his life, he swore that from that day on he would never let anyone in close enough to break his code again.

Maddie is a woman who is strong and a fighter. she doesn't like asking for helping but when everything is falling apart she has no choice but to.

Maddie's and Ashton are friends who cant deny that there is something there between them, they just need to let go of their fears and hurt in order to allow something to fire between them as the chemistry is clear from the beginning.

My only critique of this book is that everything seemed to happen so quick at times you felt like you had missed something. this book does move at 100 mph but I did overall enjoy the story and the characters.

My Overall Rating is 3 1/2 💋💋💋😘
My Passion Rating is 3 💋💋💋

Maddie and Ashton’s story is short but sweet. They become friends and they both want much more but he’s been hurt and his ex reappears so things are complicated. I felt bad for Ashton with his horrible boss and shallow, dismissive girlfriend. Vanessa did him a favor when she broke up with him so it was frustrating that he couldn’t see their relationship for what it was and actually missed her. It took some time for him to realize what he had with Maddie, but once he did, nothing else mattered. Maddie adores him and appreciates him and they’re great together so this is a HEA that made me smile.

Maddie and Ashton meet as total strangers, when he plans to propose to his girl at his favorite restaurant, her restaurant. He tells Maddie what his plans are and, being the empath that she is, Maddie jumps the gut right after Ashton gets his heart broken. Flash forward a few months and Maddie’s restaurant is in financial trouble and needs help boosting her internet presence. Reluctantly, Ashton walks back into the place that now represents heartache for him. Destiny has brought them back together, however with past fears haunting both of them, can they move on and let each other in?

This book really intrigued me from the blurb. I had never read a book with an empath at the front. Maddie’s empathic abilities were both mind-blowingly amazing and a little freaky at the same time. This friends to lovers story was fantastic. It was my first experience with Rachel Radner and I’m looking forward to reading more by her.

Programmer and designer Ashton Lance and the love of his life Vanessa Bridger, social influencer have parted ways after a public breakup at Villa de Amore Restaurant. Months later, Ashton remains a broken man only going through the motions of living each day.
Maddie Reeves’ Villa de Amore Italian restaurant is on the verge of closing after the latest recession to hit northern California. Maddies BBF Simon suggests she work with Sunnyville Designs to create a social media presence on the web. The web designer she meets with is Ashton Lance, the man from the public breakup.
Maddie is an empath and can feel moods of different people around her and she can definitely tell that Ashton remembers her and has no desire to work with her. For this reason, Maddie is a bit of a loner herself. She eventually helps Ashton reason though a lot of his feelings with Vanessa while they work together but who is there to help Maggie though her own issues?

Ashton view everything as a puzzle to be solved whether it comes to his career or the people in his life. When the evening started, he believed that it would with him being engaged to the woman he loved instead she breaks up with him and everyone at the restaurant gets to witness his humiliation.

Maddie is a woman with a huge heart which either gets her into some uncomfortable situations or ends up with her being hurt. Her plan to help Ashton was a dismal failure and now she needs his professional help which is where the complications begin.

Both Maddie and Ashton have been hurt in the past and have very different personalities and outlooks on life. When Ashton develops feelings for Maddie he must decide if they are strong enough to overcome the past that is holding him back.

I enjoyed this book by Rachel Radner, it was the first time I’d read a book by her. I liked her writing style even though the suspense was killing me!

Ashton. I usually prefer guys in books to be a little more confident and sure, but he was a sweet guy and it was nice to have a change. My heart broke for him a few times with a few people. I was so glad when he finally realised his worth. ♥️

Maddie. I loved her! It was the first time I’d ever read a book with a character like her and I enjoyed that twist. She’s such a sweetheart and the type of person who you’d want as a best friend. ♥️

I enjoyed the ending, it was along the lines of what I was hoping. I just wish it had been a little bit longer, even half a chapter.

Thank you Rachel 🙏🏻📚♥️

Ashton has his whole life planned out coded to the future with the love of his life until his code is broken and now he needs to figure out how to repair it. His boss is a douche of epic proportions and he's just trying to get by each day. When a new job comes to his desk to help out the one place that destroyed his heart he's not about to help them. Maddie is trying to do everything she can to save the one thing she loves more than life in her restaurant. When she finally asks for help she has no clue it's about to bite her in the butt. Sometimes though you need someone to show you a different outlook on life. And for these two they are about to see there is something more than coding and food. Can they move on and get what they want or will fate deliver them another blow?

This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it was a great read.
Maddie and Ashton meet at her restaurant, but in an awkward way Ashton is there to purpose to his total bitch of a fiancé Vanessa, but she ended up turning around and breaking up with him. Few months later Ashton ends up back at the restaurant that he never thought that he would be at ever again, because Maddie is in need of his help to upgrade.
Maddie is such a sweetheart, she’s an empath and a incredible at that. Ashton is a coder which was a unique twist for me. These two have a whirlwind of a relationship and I didn’t want to finish it, I wanted it to last forever.
I’m going to have to see what other books this author has.

This was a wonderful addition to this series Ashton and Maddie's story is a slow burn friends to lovers short and sweet story. They meet when he comes to her restaurant to propose to his ex girlfriend it doesn't go the way he expects he gets rejected and humiliated and is devastated by it. Maddie needs help redesigning her website and in seeking help she meets up with Ashton again who she hasn't seen since that humiliating evening all those months ago but she needs his help so hopefully they can work together. I don't want to say anymore and ruin it for anyone else with spoilers. You really need to read this book to see what happens.

Coded is a unique book to review with characters that are like no other. Ashton is a coder and his lives his life deciphering everything in that way including people and relationships. Maddie is an empath who views the world with such optimism. A broken man and a woman who will give her all to fix him, hoping she doesn’t lose herself in the process. This is a slow burn but fast paced and draws you in. I struggled at times a little with Ashton’s character as he did not have the confidence and strength that I am accustomed to in romances, however this was part of what makes this storyline different. These two deserved nothing but the sweetest HEA.

What a truly sweet story about being reminded we all have value and deserve to be treated as though we matter.

Ashton the pessimist meet Maddie the optimist. At least that's what they'd like you to think. Ashton has suffered in the relationship arena and Maddie well she avoids it after realizing her empathic abilities make it hard to make smart decision when it comes to her heart.

But what happens when these two meet and for the first time both get the overwhelming sense they have finally met someone who gets them?

With a fantastic cameo from our favorite police officer and another from a town sleaze bag, this is a great rainy day read!

This is a great addition to this awesome series and is Ashton and Maddie’s story. Ashton and Maddie both have insecurities, and first meet when he comes to her restaurant to propose to his then long-term girlfriend, and he is devastated when he gets rejected. These two are destined to cross paths again when Maddie’s restaurant is in trouble, and he needs help to redesign her website, and this is when Ashton walks back into her life. This is a slow burn story, which is short, sweet, and heartfelt, and is a friends / lovers’ page turner. I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.

A breath of fresh air

Maddie, a restaurant owner, meets Ashton, a computer programmer, when he comes to her restaurant on the night he plans to propose to his long-term girlfriend. As the story progresses plans go awry, he fails to try, and just when things brighten up he mucks them up again. Rachel Radner’s Coded is a great addition to the Everyday Heroes World. Ashton is your everyday web designer while Maddie is the breath of fresh air he didn’t know needed.

I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Maddie is an empath and she’s always wanting to fix broken people. Ashton is a coder who always sees people as a code he needs to solve. From the moment he meets Maddie he can’t figure out her code, yet she can read him so easily. They become friends and both want more, but Ashton is still hung up on his ex and is afraid to open himself up again. Then his ex reappears making things more complicated. I absolutely couldn’t stand his ex!! Ashton and Maddie were perfect together and I loved watching their relationship develop. An entertaining read and one I enjoyed immensely.

I mostly enjoyed this very slow burn, very drawn out story between Ashton and Maddie. The characters are sweet, have their own little quirks and things in their life they are trying to handle. I was a little taken out of the story with the amount of flashback moments that Ashton has with his ex, too much of the story focused on that former relationship instead of what could be between he and Maddie. Overall the story works, but I'd have liked more of their relationship and growth.

The premise of Coded is very interesting and different than any book I’ve ever read. I love Maddie and wanted to wrap her up in a hug. She’s a very giving and strong person, despite the heartache she’s suffered.
Ashton was a tougher sell for me, though. While I love a good beta male, I spent much of the book wishing he had the strength and backbone that Maddie had. He wasn’t a bad guy by any means, but his personality was very wishy washy, which was a turn off for me.
Overall, it was an enjoyable story, mostly for the plot twist and the heroine.

Coded is the latest addition to The Everyday Heroes World series and my first book by Rachel Radner. Ashton is a coder who sees people as a code to solve and Maddie us an empath who just wants to fix broken people. From.the moment these two meet again, you can feel the emotions and tension swirl. I will honestly say that Ashton's ex Vanessa did him a favor when she broke up with him, as she's a very shallow person who has no regard for others feelings. It took me a minute to get into this book. But after a a few chapters, I was sucked in.

He's locked down his heart, she feels everything. Neither has faith in themselves. Will they heal each other's hearts?

Have to say that I loved how these two were quirky in their own ways, but together they were better. I didn't blame him for the hot and cold, but loved seeing him slowly realize that things weren't his fault and how once he made a decision he went all in. She definitely wore her heart on her sleeve, but I don't think she should have changed a thing despite other people's opinions. Good read!

I absolutely loved this book. I loved seeing how Maddie and Ashton grew together and overcame their insecurities.

I loved how Ashton and Maddie’s story crossed right at the beginning without knowing it was Maddie before the main story began and that it was Ashton who was hung up over his ex throughout the book making him scared to love again. It was a refreshing flip in the stereotypes of books and it made the story gripping yet sweet.

Rachel Radner has been one of my go-to authors since first reading Prometheus Burning. I was excited to hear that she had a new release out. Coded is one of those books where you can kick your shoes off, curl up with a glass of wine, and become lost in. Aston was relatable as someone who is a great guy but does have a bit of a past. Maddie is a hard-working chef and business owner who just wants to keep her restaurant afloat. You can just feel Aston and Maddie’s chemistry together.

Ashton and Maddie are wired the same way. Lana~White Hot Reads

These two feel everything and can read other people. When Maddie realizes Ashton is the one from her restaurant , her empath is spot on. He has alot of issues he needs to deal with. She has a connection with him and it shows. They work it out together.

This was an ok read. Disappointing.

I didn’t really connect with the characters and did not finish reading the book.

Nor did I get how it is part of the Everyday Heroes Series.

Maybe I will enjoy it more if and when I pick the book up to read in the future.

I was intrigued by the blurb and thought this would be an entertaining story. I didn’t necessarily connect with the story or the characters unfortunately. I didn’t like his character and a few others as well. I got lost in the timing which made the story hard to follow. I requested a copy of this book and am voluntarily writing a review.
