Anna and her mother have traveled all the way to Vienna, Austria, determined to discover why Granny Hildie won’t speak of her homeland. They’ve arranged to meet with an old acquaintance, one who knows the truth of Granny’s childhood during World War II. But as the story unfolds, Anna isn’t sure she wants to hear it.
Hildie’s story begins eighty years earlier, when she’s an eleven-year-old girl in 1930s Austria. War is coming to her homeland, but all Hildie cares about is her own little can she stop her family from falling apart while the world collapses in on itself?
As the war progresses, she starts to realize that change can’t be stopped. And when her family decides to take a stand, Hildie feels caught in the middle.
Should she keep her head down and try to survive the monstrosities of Nazi Germany? Or should she stand up for her faith and her country?
As Anna hears Granny’s story for the first time, the storyteller’s words resonate deeply. “Didn’t we all know the right choice? It was whether or not we were brave enough to do it.”
I couldn’t put it down. My first thought was how when the book was started being written and now when I’m reading it the Jews are being attacked and killed again . I love history also and have been many times to this exact area and it was ALIVE to me as I read it. Thank you Mallory for putting your life into it.
