kinda spoilery read at ur own risk
Well this was definitely…something™. I originally wanted to read Forged in Frost because I thought this book would be more focused on the dragons (spoiler: it was not). And I think I was right in that assumption due to the series quite literally being called Of Dragons and Fae. But more spoiler the only dragon in here was actually just the love interest who was only a dragon shifter anyways so…I’m basically saying I got absolutely nothing. I was starved.
Besides the lack of dragons—which was annoying and the main reason I wanted to read this story—I was pretty astounded by how young Forged in Frost read. Everything about this story is juvenile; down to:
* The characters: who are 19+ but act 13 at most. The 13 yr old character was more mature than the adults…
* The plot and twists: which read exactly like every YA fantasy ever
* The underdeveloped world and magic system: the world was SUPER interesting, and all the Fae races and factions could have ended up being really cool but everything felt very 1D (young YA…)
* And the very young style of writing.
Like, this book was just as corny as it gets. We literally had characters saying (these are actually direct quotes):
”And you think a scrawny hatchling like yourself can stop me?”
”You won’t get away with this, you know. My friends will come for me.”
and
”If you want to get to my friends, you’ll have to go through me first.”
Author, this is supposed to be a NA book. This dialogue literally reads like Scooby Doo type of shit. And no shade to Mystery Incorporated, I frl grew up with those characters and I still sit down to watch that show when it’s on TV to this day, but when I’m reading an adult fantasy romance I don’t want this type of corny ass dialogue in the book I’m reading. I literally starting laughing out loud when the FMC started spewing these cheesy ass lines. Girl no villain is going to be scared of your corny ass.
So anyways…I think my main problem was this book is that it read so young. This was literally just younger YA with “aged up” characters and (allusions to) smut. I think this story could have been a really cool take on the prophecy trope and the fated/chosen one + adding dragons into it?! The way this could have been a new favorite for me was so high. But our FMC literally had a grasp of her powers that she knew nothing about four days prior. It was just so YA and absolutely hilarious to me. I genuinely couldn’t take her serious, or any of these characters, for that matter.
The romance was also so cringe. These two characters are supposed to be fated mates and they, first of all, have absolutely no chemistry, but they also read like middle schoolers that have a crush on each other. The amount of blushing and corny ass banter between these two was insane. I genuinely didn’t know if I wanted to laugh or cry. There was one scene in here where the FMC was trying to beat the villain and the villain said something like
”She’s mine!”
And the MMC was like
”She belongs to no one but herself😡”
Wow guys what a man who believes in basic human decency and rights, he’s so dreamy. Speaking of the MMC/love interest, this man was such a fucking edge lord I was literally crying laughing at how goofy he was acting. The entire book he’s like ”I hate the Fae so much because they killed my kind😡” and ”Faeries suck so bad, I wish I could have just died out with my race😤” but we’re literally informed his race was also responsible for mass killing and genocide against the Fae race. Like he was such a biased sad boi😣 I literally wanted to punch him after awhile. His POV was absolutely aggravating to read. I guarantee you this man watches sad Bart Simpson edits in his free time and has a Morissey shrine…
And you’re probably like, why did you keep reading if you hated it so much? And this story was really fucking entertaining in the first 40%, I can’t even lie. I thought I would give this a solid 3 stars despite the occasional cringe moments. I was genuinely having a good time; I saw this for what it was but it was enjoyable and easy. But the last 60% of this book was a literal nightmare, I honestly skimmed the last 20% because I could not take actually reading this book for any longer and I was too far into this to DNF. I’m really disappointed about this one. I honestly thought I’d have a new favorite, but I really didn’t enjoy most of this book whatsoever.

Okay… I’m INVESTED! I really enjoyed the first book in this new series. It has elemental Fae, Dragons, mates, romance, and hidden powers!
This book is in duel POV, which I loved. The balance between world building and plot was perfect!
I’m can’t wait to see what Jasmine has planned for the rest of this story.

Promised in Fire is a fantasy story, filled with magic and adventure. The world building was pretty good. And while I consider this book enjoyable, I don't think like the writing very much.
Adara is introduced as a water fae that has problems with her magic. And because of that, she put her focus on her physical skills, which is a smart idea. While she is determined to become a bad ass bitch, she's also undeniably naive. She repeatedly choose the ignore warning signs that blaring right in front of her.
You should definitely care, girl.
Einar is the last dragon of the realm and has been sleeping for almost twenty years. He's awakened when Adara touched his skin, mistaking him for a statue. In no time, Einar knows that she's his mate — which is sucks because fae had committed genocide against dragons in the past. But like every other love stories between soulmates, their attraction towards each other is undeniable.
This book is full of adventure and action with a little bit politics and romance — the kind of book that I love. However, the writing is just not doing it for me. It lacks of depth and the last few chapters feel a little bit rushed. I also think that the author made a poor choice to reveal the betrayal through the villain's POV. A betrayal is supposed to make readers feel angry, sad, shock, and... betrayed. By choosing to reveal the villain's plan from head on just made the scene feel flat.
So yeah, it's a decent book to read. But, don't expect it blow your mind.

Least Creative YA Fantasy Novel
The book reads like a basic first draft. Let me first start with the negatives summed up in three major categories:
Timeline
Emotional detachment
Overuse of Fantasy Tropes
Timeline: everything happens too fast with little to know understanding of time or distances traveled between realms. Time builds emotions, situations. The book happened in the span of 4 days. It just wasn't a good choice.
Emotional Detachment: The characters have no time to develop or deal with complex emotions. It's written to say how the reader should feel without any situations to give the reader reason to feel. If you rush these critical elements in a book, the characters are flat and emotionally stunted. Stop telling us how the character feel. Give us reason to feel with them.
Overuse of Fantasy Tropes: This book read like the author was grabbing all the basic fantasy tropes available then spun them weakly into a poorly developed web of story. The pacing doesn't help establish anything unique or interesting about her world. It's written like a matter of fact kind of book and convenient elements exists just because they exist without any consequence. In other words, things just exist because, "fantasy".
That leads me to my greatest and final complaint: the stakes are poorly contrived. The main character is motivated to save her mother but fails to make an emotional connection to the world around her. Her companions are hastily constructed and do little to support her growth as everything they do just happens to work without any conflict or tension. Her male dragon companion faces a life of being the last of his species with mild tantrums here and there but his character is weak and two-dimensional.
Perspective: I've read a lot of YA books over the years and seen authors succeed and fail depending on the quality of their story construction and creativity. This has the potential to develop, but as it is, it's a weak world, amateur story and a good first start.
Final positive thoughts?
It was the fastest I've ever read a YA novel. If we take things for just things in the world, it has potential. It reads like a jaunt through the world of Avatar, the Last Airbender, and mirrors a lot of other YA fantasy authors out there. It's a simple, quick read.

I’m sorry but this was bad. And it had so much potential!! Dragons, romance, mates, Fae, magic and everything. However, it sucked. First of it read like a ya novel but then suddenly the main guy talks about his cock?? Pick an age group please. The plot was all over the place. The whole book just felt like a really long prologue for the final few chapters and a set up for the next books in the series.
Also all the characters were so hard to take seriously.
Some moments that pulled me out of the story:
- The rivalry in the beginning between Dune and Adara?? Adara didn’t want to sleep with him and now he hates her so much that he wants to imprison her and her mother??? I get that he sucks, but you can make him suck and make him make sense at the same time. You’re telling me that they hated and insulted each other their entire childhood and nothing ever happened. But now that they hate and insult each other again, he wants to pretty much murder her and her mom? Dune makes no sense character wise. He was only there as a plot device to take of Adara’s necklace.
- Dragon guy: “I have to go away and make her reject the bond! Oh no but she smells kind of nice now I have an erection okay then let’s boink.”
- “Oh no we’re gonna be eaten by terrifying flesh eating harpies! Never mind a child just yelled at them and now they’re sort of nice even though they just tried to murder us and we should for sure go with them.”
- “Let me just use this priceless life-saving apple on someone that just tried to murder me because it’s the right thing to do even though my companion just broke his wing and needs to heal it. Oh never mind the broken wing is never spoken of again and it’s fine”
- “Hot take, being royalty might not always be nice because people are mean.”
- “Oh no the bad guy has bad magic, never mind he died.”
- “Oh no who is this new bad guy? No worries she just told us who she is and what she’s gonna do now. Also, she just told you that your mother is still alive inside of her and always will be so no worries you can still save her! Why would the villain give us that vital piece of information? Because we have to have something to do in the sequel!”
Love it when you introduce a new villain in the last chapter of a book and they just explain everything you have to do to beat them at the first possible opportunity.

I really wanted to like it but could not for the life of me be invested in the story and characters. I did finish the book so I guess two stars for that because even though I did not care, I still wanted to know what would happen.

This is such a cool concept. Dragons and Fae together in one world WHO DOESNT LOVE THAT!? We meet our dragon shifter on page 71 and on page 72 he knows they’re mates. I’m sorry HUH? The first thoughts he has about her are so sexual, it really gave me the ick honestly.

i just cannot bring myself to finish this. i feel like this whole time i've been waiting for the book to get engaging but it never did. this seemed like a watered down version of every YA fantasy novel to ever exist. mc has special powers and is so special just because. she's mated to the last dragon to exist just because. shes also the main star of a big prophecy just because.
anyways, this was really boring and i didn't like it :)

2.5🌟 since i was feeling generous. This read like an elementary school novella mixed with insta lust. Very fast paced which was good for me because i don't think i could finish this otherwise but stupid nontheless.

This is an exciting first book in a new series by Jasmine Walt. It’s a slow burn romantic fantasy with a sexy male dragon and dangerous female fae. Ms. Walt’s world building and character development are outstanding, surpassing even The Baine Chronicles, which are some of her finest writings. The main characters Einar and Adara have great seductive enemies-to-friends chemistry. It builds, leading the reader eager to want more. Ms. Walt creates wonderfully evil villains. Enjoy this sensational new world from the pen of Jasmine Walt.

January 31, 2025I read this last year and DNF about 40% in. I really didn’t like the random POV chapters from characters we had just meet that just got thrown in. I’m a single or dual POV reader so I think that’s why this bugged me so much.
The plot and storyline did seem interesting I just couldn’t get past this.

Good, but needs work
The storyline is good. I liked the world the author created and the characters (mostly). The biggest problem I have with this book is the lack of depth. There was a perfect opportunity at one point in the book for the author to give the H and h time to get to know one another better but the author completely skipped it. I wanted to be invested in their relationship, but it was more tell than show, which is what really separates decents books from great books. Also, the book reads more like a second draft. It needs a good editor to work out the grammatical errors, plot holes, inconsistencies, stunted dialog, etc.

I was loving this book. And tbh this would have been one of my favorite books. I was hooked right from the beginning (yes my review has small spoilers but I think people should know this before wasting their time on this book). Until Adara and Einar meet. I was so excited to see them finally meet. But literally the first thing he notices is her boobs. Her body is the only thing he cares about. Occasionally he’ll throw in a nice compliment about her hair🙄. I can’t stand books that objectify women right off the bat. He knew right away that they were mates. Einar basically acts the same way modern males do in the real world. He’s a horny male with no impulse control and needs🙄. He also can’t handle rejection. She rejected him twice and the first time he got pissed and walked off. And the second he almost SAed her. She said no and he wouldn’t stop and said “your mine” as if she’s his property. She had to push him off of him to get him to stop. And ya I get it he wasn’t aware of what happened he had zero recollection to what happened. But regardless when she called him out on it he stormed off. He reminds me of everything I hate with modern males. Like honestly during their first fight he lands on her and the first thing he thinks about is screwing her. Then they run into this things called harpies I think. And they are freaking R&pists. They are women who R&pe men over and over until they get impregnated and then they kill them. And literally one of them was talking about how big of a c0ck one of the males had that they r$ped and how good it felt. Absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the editing was horrible. It was hard to get through. I only enjoyed the start of the book. The action was good and then randomly throughout the book the author got horny and wrote some weird shit that made no sense at all. Einar was a creep idgaf what anybody says. I have read a few books with dragon shifters none of which have problems with consent!! This book was creepy and made me remember why I despise males. I did like adara and this book would have been great had the author just wrote a cute love story. They could have definitely hated eachother and fought a bit. But making Einar a creep who only cared about her body is what ruined it for me. There was no chemistry between Adara and Einar. This book was gross. I think I DNFed at 60% I was trying so hard to keep going because I was interested in what would happen next but I kept getting triggered by the creep. Anyways I’ll be adding this author to my DNR list cuz her book was triggering. Book would have been so amazing had she made him a decent man rather then a disgusting creep who can’t handle rejection. That’s all 💗

A very enjoyable and easy read. The characters are likeable and the plot is interesting. Love the little heists and quests. Then lastly that slow burn and tension between Adara and Einar is painful but great 🤣. 3.5⭐ because some of the quests felt like fillers and didn't contribute as much to the overall plot progression and I got very confused with the politics and the point of it. 🙈

I very much enjoyed this and can't wait to continue with the series!
This is not a groundbreaking story by any means - there is a lot of inspiration from Avatar The Last Airbender and maybe ACOTAR, though I think comparing Einar to Rhysand is a bit of a stretch and the only thing similar to Fourth Wing is the fact that there is a dragon, BUT I still enjoyed the hell out of this book.
Adara is a badass heroine and Einar is very swoony. This is a very slow burn fated mates story and I need to read more about this couple. I also love Leap and Mavlyn and am obsessed with the sentient clouds that carry air fae.
Much of the plot was easily detectable, so if that bothers you I would pass on this, but it definitely didn't deter me from enjoying this!

I tried. I really wanted to like this one. So much potential, but too much was revealed too fast and the mystery was non-existent.
I got to 30% and by then I was forcing myself to read it cause I'd convinced myself I had to get through it. But then a friend reminded me we don't have time to waste on average books that don't make us happy.
If I struggled to get to 30% in book 1, when there's 3 books, it would have been a hate read and I would have resented wasting precious holiday time on it 🤣

When will the opportunity to ride a dragon come along??
Cause I have been waiting for some time, and I am not very patient by nature.
And I am jealous of Adara. I don’t like being jealous of anyone.
Was this book fantastic? No, not really.
Was it still good? Yes, I would say it was.
The problem is that it felt more like an early draft rather than the finishing product.
We have the plot scenes down - mostly - but it lacks a lot of scenes around it that lets us connect with the characters, and see emotional relationships form and evolve.
I didn’t feel like Adara and Einar actually hated each other.
I didn’t feel like Einar really hated the fae even though he kept saying it.
Adara couldn’t keep her mouth shut to save her life.
She was on the run, and he was the last dragon shifter in existence, and no one knew about him.
Yet everywhere they went everyone found out about both of them, about her magic, they gave their real names to everyone they came across, along with their whole story of being on the run.
It was just so easy to track them that even I could have done it.
And yes, she was inexperienced, but Einar had been to war. One would think he could strategise better, and had sharper senses that didn’t allow for them to be ambushed at every turn.
It also seemed way to easy for the Fae to take down dragons.
It still has potential. I am hoping it will get better, because things were interesting in the end.
As was the true identity of Adara.
And now I need Einar to get his shit together and realise he wants her.

Meh.
I’ll continue reading because I rarely don’t finish books (These bones are not my child I’m looking at you) but this was underwhelming. The writing is poor and the amount of exposition you get is actually mind boggling. It IS actually okay for readers to work out a few things for themselves without being spoon-fed information at every turn.

I did enjoy the book. It was the first dragon shifter book i’ve ever read and i do like it. However there’s nothing particular about the storyline so far that makes it stand out compared to other romantasy books.

Loved!!! This was a really fun and well written book! Excited for the rest of the series, really enjoyed all the different characters and their stories being told throughout the book.
Always love a good book that shows different perspectives of what’s going on and more than one viewpoint told.
Not super lovey dovey and intimate scenes like I expected but I prefer that!
Lots of actions, twists, the ending was so satisfying and I kind of guessed it in the middle but nice confirmation!
