Rate this book
Unlock the Healing Powers of a Meat-Based Diet.

Discover a Revolutionary Approach to Health and Wellness That Aligns With Our Primal, Evolutionary Roots.

Meat has held a special place in the human diet for millions of years. The first major evolutionary change in the human diet was the incorporation of meat and marrow from large animals, which occurred about 2.6 million years ago.

The diet of the earliest hominins (pre-humans) was similar to the diet of modern omnivorous, including large quantities of fruit, leaves, nuts, seeds, flowers, bark, and insects.

About 2.6 million years ago, a remarkable expansion in the human diet started to occur; some hominins began incorporating meat and marrow from small to very large animals into their diet, leading to remarkable changes in cognition, brain mass and function, body composition, anatomy, and physiology.

The Carnivore Fix explores the multifaceted benefits of the carnivore diet and showcases how and why humans are anatomically and physiologically designed to be primarily meat-eaters.

If you're looking for a complete diet guide that tells you exactly how to restore health and vitality to your body in a natural and non-invasive way, while still enjoying delicious food, this book is for you.

Not an anti-vegan book

First and foremost, credentials for Christopher Shaw (“distinguished nutritionist and naturopathic doctor”) are hard to track down, which is where I always start when considering medical opinion. Second and important to note for this review, I have not consumed animal products for over twenty years—but I am curious and open-minded and wonder if my lifestyle choices, made two decades ago, are the right ones. I am a big fan of “How Not to Die” (New York Times Best Seller by Michael Greger, M.D.), so I was keen to consider a different point of view.

The Carnivore Fix: A Comprehensive Guide to a Nose-to-Tail Meat-Based Diet is essentially a well-researched guide to a carbohydrate-free ketogenic diet, which mimics the metabolism of fasting. Shaw presents a balanced view of the pros and cons of an entirely meat, and a vegan diet, nicely noting the differences in vitamin C and B12 in both approaches to eating. Without this considered view of benefits and disbenefits, I would have returned the book to the shelf. I was also pleased to see a bibliography at the end of the book, giving credence to Shaw’s thesis.

The book has two styles, a reference book approach to facts and data you can dip in and out of, and handy shopping and cooking tips. This second half is not quite a cookbook (some more detailed instructions or perhaps some pictures would help). My favourite part was the section about herbs and spices as part of a carnivore diet, which allowed me to understand Shaw’s point of view. He also presents some fascinating history of meat-based diets and answers to forty-one frequently asked questions. On balance, this well-structured, informative book presents Shaw’s central argument satisfactorily while also championing exercise, health and wellness.

Has Shaw convinced me to re-evaluate my relationship with food? The simple answer is no. Just as meat-eaters always ask vegans how they can live without bacon, the prospect of 100% veggie-free food (I’m thinking onions, chocolate, alcohol) is too awful to contemplate. At least Shaw recommends followers of his diet, “Season the meat with your preferred seasonings such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, or any herbs and spices of your choice”. This is not an anti-vegan book; it’s just a book that presents an alternate view, so no gripes from me.

The Carnivore Fix is an extensive, no-nonsense guide on pretty much anything you could ever want to know about trying a strict carnivore diet. This type of eating is not for me, but I will say Dr. Christopher Shaw makes a good case about the benefits of eating different types of meats and why some people might want to give this type of diet a go.

The main thing that comes across to me about an all-meat diet is that it’s darned strict. If you’re following this diet to a tee, even drinks like coffee and tea are not acceptable, though “seasonings like salt and pepper are generally accepted,” according to the author. Meanwhile, if you’re hankering for a midday snack, you can look forward to chowing down on food such as pemmican, liver chips, bone broth, and canned fish. Yum!

Dr. Shaw does an excellent job of pointing out the beneficial nutrients and minerals in meat, as well as the nutrients that an all-meat diet lacks. The information presented is balanced throughout and more nuanced than I thought it would be.

Shaw is sympathetic to those who might want to pursue a diet like this, knowing how hard it could potentially be to pull off, for instance, when one is traveling or dining at a restaurant.

Though the extensive details in this book are repetitive at times, the research is impressive and goes into areas such as how an all-meat diet affects blood sugar and sleep quality and so much more. After reading this material, I do agree that eating meat probably does help people’s joint health, inflammation issues, blood sugar, gut bacteria, and perhaps other areas of health.

A Surprising Eye-Opener!

I picked up "The Carnivore Fix" without much knowledge about meat-based diets, and I must say, I am pleasantly surprised! This book provided me with a wealth of information about our evolutionary history and the role meat has played in shaping us as humans. The detailed exploration of the transition from an omnivorous diet to a meat-based one, about 2.6 million years ago, was fascinating. It truly opened my eyes to the primal connection we have with meat.

The book is well-structured and easy to follow, even for someone like me, who was entirely new to the concept. What impressed me the most was the comprehensive approach it takes. It not only explains the historical and biological aspects but also delves into practical aspects, offering a step-by-step guide to adopting a carnivore diet.

I appreciated how the author emphasized the natural and non-invasive way this diet can restore health and vitality. The writing style is engaging, and the scientific explanations are made accessible for beginners.

After reading "The Carnivore Fix," I feel more informed and confident about exploring a meat-based diet. It's a fantastic resource for anyone seeking a natural path to better health and performance. Four stars!

Delving into "The Carnivore Fix" with limited knowledge of meat-centric diets proved to be a delightful revelation. The book not only enriched my understanding of our evolutionary past but also illuminated the pivotal role meat played in shaping human development. The meticulous exploration of our transition to a meat-based diet 2.6 million years ago was genuinely captivating, unveiling the primal connection we share with meat.

The book's well-organized structure made it accessible for newcomers like me. What stood out was its holistic approach, seamlessly blending historical and biological insights with practical guidance for those new to the concept of a carnivore diet.

The author's emphasis on the diet's natural and non-intrusive potential for restoring health resonated strongly. The engaging writing style and the author's knack for simplifying scientific explanations made the content approachable for beginners like myself.

This book lays out the science of a carnivore diet, not just the benefits and nutrient values. It explains the benefits of the carnivore diet and how humans are designed to be primarily meat-eaters. It has a very easy-to-understand guide that tells you how to take care of your health while still enjoying delicious food.

The author's passion for the subject is evident, presenting a narrative that is as informative as it is engaging. With a focus on the physiological and cognitive advancements attributed to meat consumption in our early history, the book offers a fascinating exploration of our primal dietary patterns.

Lots of good technical info but no in-depth references to studies that I felt would be helpful for a book like this. It does have a balanced approach. I feel it could have benefited from a few additions such as some pictures illustrating the recipes and a glossary for easy reference if needed.

After reading The Carnivore Diet for Beginners I wanted to delve deeper into how the carnivore diet works, why it helps people lose weight and what foods are best.

I learned that vegetables and fruits may not be as healthy as we’ve been lead to believe. Eating mostly red meats, especially organ meat, such as liver is key in this meat based diet, especially organ meat such as liver and bone broth. This is to prevent inflammatory properties found in plant based food such as vegetables and beans.

This guide contains shopping lists and lists of the best products to buy for the carnivore diet. It lists specific types and cuts of meat are best. This is very helpful for people who want to start and stay on this plan.

It also gives meal plans and ways to combine the food for optimum benefits. It even gives tips of what to order when eating in restaurants and while travelling. This section was really fun and anyone could enjoy this type of meal planning.

The Carnivore Fix is a very interesting read, both informative about nutrition and offering some recipe ideas (some of which I liked a lot like the Liver Crisps and especially the cheese ones! Can’t go wrong with cheeses!) Going into details about why these dishes are good for you (via vitamins and such) along with the history of the ingredients and what they contain, such as fat content and vitamins, while also blending it into the recipes themselves make this book a very good read (and one that makes me very hungry too!).
From Eggs to Livers to Creams this book has it all, even going into small parts that aren’t really meat, but are definitely from an animal so it’s not just meats (so if you’re not a true carnivore, you can still enjoy it)! Personally, I am not one, but I do enjoy meats and cheeses a lot, so this book was a very good read for me!

What I appreciated about this book is that it got right to the carnivore diet basics straight away. No fillers or unnecessary anecdotes at the start. Immediately it talked about what the diet consists of, potential benefits and possible drawbacks of eating exclusively animal foods. I appreciated that balance of benefits vs problems to look out for because while my husband and I both are following this plan, he's having a much easier time and seeing more progress with a couple of health issues improving. It's not a miracle cure and finally it's great to see a carnivore diet resource that doesn't claim it is, but rather helps address problems like satiety and energy and nutritional deficiencies. I recommend this as the perfect well rounded reference. It uses simple language to cover nutrition and practical ways to implement the diet.
