love the setting, love the magic system, love the character designs… and the mc? he’s insane but in a funny way. i mean, poor kid, but he’s so intense, i fully believe he could destroy the whole world on sheer rage alone.
Impressive debut manga for Atsushi Okubo’s (Fire Force/Soul Eater) former assistant.
Art wise Kei Urana immediately shows her personality. If some tricks were learned with Okubo (street art style, deformed angles) she imprints them with a powerful gritty/scratchy style. She tries weird angles, different techniques (drawing in white over black for example) and delivers impressive charged up pages. Very good character designs too. Her inking kinda sucks though or at least gives an impression of not totally mastered febrility. The city settings of the first volume are very poor and mechanical though they’ll improve in the next.
Plot wise only two volumes released in France so far so we’re still in the introduction. There’s a kind of ecological view but I can’t say if it’ll stick or not. The characters are engaging, the antagonist merely suggested (he seems cool though). The world described is binary with a strong Gunm vibe. There’s still a lot to uncover and I impatientely expect volume 3.
I've been reading this weekly and it's so damn good!! I love the world, characters and the idea already. I can't wait for more!! Also Rudo is surprisingly not as annoying as most Shonen MC, in fact I liked him from chapter 1.
I read this manga in one sitting even though I have emails to reply to, exam to set and lesson note to master. it is good to enter a world that is not yours once in a while
This was an INSANELY strong start to a series. It oozes style and punk anger at the establishment. Love it so far and want to see where Rudo goes from here.
Imagine a society where the haves literally throw their trash at the have-nots, and the have-nots then… well, they make weapons out of it. Rudo is a delightfully hot-headed orphan who is framed for a murder he didn't commit. His punishment? Being unceremoniously dumped into the "Abyss," a literal trash heap that's less "landfill chic" and more "hellscape with really pointy bits."
This was so thrilling! It's got heart, it's got action and it's got enough repurposed garbage to make even the most dedicated eco-warrior raise an eyebrow.
A surprisingly fresh take on the shonen genre that proves one man's trash is truly a treasure... and potentially a lethal weapon.
This was such a breath of fresh air! Yes, it leans into a few familiar shonen elements but I genuinely enjoyed this volume. The art style is expressive, raw, and perfectly suited to the world.
I’m not sure if it’s the unique premise, Rudo himself, the art, or the powers but I’m definitely hooked and excited to pick up the next volume. Rudo’s belief that well cared for and loved items will be imbued with souls is also oddly wholesome. That character-defining idea really makes me love Rudo.
(Random side note - Pretty disappointed that Rudo’s childhood friend, Chiwa, was so ready to believe he was a murderer.)
~Synopsis~ Falsely accused of murder and thrown from the floating city into a sprawling abyss of garbage, Rudo is forced to fight for survival. Even though he grew up as an outcast in a city split between luxury and poverty, nothing could have prepared him for what he encounters in the Abyss. Massive monsters, toxic mists, and a whole civilization await him as do his strange new powers.
Thank you Kodansha Comics for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
2,5/5. Not for me. It wasn't bad, the action was good, the art was okay and the story even if not really original was also fine. It isn't bad, but it isn't memorable, entertaining, different or unique in any way that made me want to continue with this series. The major turn off would be the, I guess we can call it magic system, that just feel a bit ridiculous to me. I won't go forward with that one, but it could please some readers for sure.
The more I think about it the more I like it. This was so different and new, totally a breath of fresh air. The story has a classic structure, but the topic and the setting used are totally new. I'm super duper curious to continue the series and it was definitely worth the hype it got, just maybe not all the too many different versions the first volume got tho lol
Oh, this is going to be a very cool series, isn't it?
I am OBSESSED with the artwork. It is exaggerated and full of character, with lots of fun experimentation with the "camera" and stylized perspectives. I found the detailed art and panels very fitting considering the plot emphasizes that every object has a "soul" (so of course every panel is oozing with care and soul).
My only nit-picks are that I'm hoping the characters can be developed more in the future and I wish the narrative around waste wasn't given so much exposition. It would be explained quite well simply through the actions/abilities of the characters and world-building.
so the anime trailer came out yesterday so i was like shit i guess its finally time to catch up before it comes out and.... YUP. THIS HAS SO MUCH SAUCE WTF. rudo i would die for you. kill for you. i love the world building already and what the fuck is going down. ART STYLE. IT SCRATCHES MY BRAIN SOOOOO RIGHT also.... enjin??? lets talk later 💋

“They say that when an object is well loved it is eventually imbued with a soul, then what about the garbage, the trash that gets thrown away? What is that imbued with?”
Gachiakuta is an ongoing dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kei Urana featuring graffiti designs by Andō Hideyoshi. Gachiakuta offers a nice blend of energetic and stylish punk vibe shounen storytelling, inventive worldbuilding and themes like class divide and capitalism.
The premise: a floating city divides society by class, the wealthy living comfortably above while the poor are relegated to the slums beneath them. Anything deemed useless, for example objects, people, and even those falsely condemned, are cast into the massive pit below. When Rudo is framed for the murder of his adoptive father, he is cast down into the pit. There, lies a landscape shaped by the emotional residue of the world above. Discarded objects absorb the feelings of their owners, and when large amounts of “anima” gathers, they mutate into monstrous “trash beasts.” Humanity’s survival depends on the Cleaners, a group of fighters who awaken the souls of beloved objects into ''vital instruments'', transforming everyday items into personalized weapons. It really could be anything - scissors, umbrella, wooden stick, gloves etc. The side characters are lively + they have big personalities, and with Rude in the mix, who's rough around the edges, socially off, and constantly ticked off at how the world treats trash, the dynamic between each of them can be entertaining.
Overall, the art is cool and unique, and the pacing for the story is just right. The mystery is there and the upcoming events will be dynamic for sure (I've seen anime already, so we are in for a treat).I read that Urana used to be assistant to Atsushi Ohkubo (Soul Eater/Fire Force) and is now acknowledged by him as his rightful successor. Pretty cool, I think.
Every object that you take care of, gets imbued with a soul. In Gachiakuta not many believe it, but Rudo sure does. After being blamed for a murder he didn’t commit, he’s thrown into a pit as punishment. But what he finds there, is not what he expected.
I absolutely loved this manga and have the feeling it can become really amazing. I never heard of it before, but a quick google search told me that there even is an anime of it. I went in completely blind, and honestly, that’s the best way to do it. I was not sure what to expect, but it sure was not what I got. The story is even better than I expected.
The art-style is absolutely lovely and very easy on the eyes. There are some rough edges here and there, but the story is so good that you really do not notice them.
I have some mixed feelings about the characters, but that is what makes them good. They aren’t one-dimensional and really got personality. There are a lot of characters introduced in the four short chapters that this volume holds, and some of them are only there for a very short time and I doubt we will see them again. But every story needs its throw-away characters.
The world-building in this manga is so amazing, it really crafted a world out of a garbage-filled pit, with it’s own lore and culture.
You will have to read it so say what I mean. Absolutely loved it!
Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for a honest review.
This is my review for the series as a whole, at least the chapters I've read so far. Anyone who's looking to pick up the series is only going to look at reviews for this first volume.
If you loved Soul Eater, you're gonna loooove this; aesthetically speaking, the plots aren't even close to similar. It's dark and punk-y without straying too much from animanga tropes (the protagonist being a loudmouth kid who "just won't give up" and has parent issues, the ragtag team of misfits, a recurring antagonist that's waaaayyyy too OP, a secret conspiracy, etc.). I also have to mention that I love, love, love the vital instruments idea, because I'm the kind of idiot that feels bad when I have to throw out anything.
The concept and world building of this is very interesting to me: people live on a floating island above a pit where they throw all their trash and criminals down to. In that pit full of trash and pollution, monsters made of trash attack any human on sight. The only way to defeat these monsters is from those who have the power to bring objects to life to create weapons out of it.
Everything was explained sooo well and so easy to grasp.🤌 I hate when the systems are too complex and make no sense so it was very nice to understand this one right off the bat.
I loved Rudo, he is so completely feral I love him. Literal biter. Enjin meanwhile??? Had me GAGGED. I loveeee a hot man beating ass, being mysterious, but then still being helpful to this random ass angry kid. He's so Gojo coded, prayer circle they don't share the same fate.🛐
I absolutely love this art style. Everyone has big ass eyes and look like fuckass Tim Burton characters but it's so very expressive and gritty. The faces that Rudo makes are top tier creepy and I feel like I can HEAR him when he goes off.
FINE FINE FINE I'll read it! You win! The world is cool and interesting and I love the art against my will!!!! I just wanted to know who the cool blonde is but I guess I have another series to add to my list
This has a similar plot device to Deadman Wonderland so I’m interested. The intro to Rudo and the dynamics of the world were good and this is a series is one I will deff continue.
