This is a story of a young girl and her family as the settle in Eastern Oregon. It's reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie but in my opinion much better written. I loved getting a sense of what life was like for a pioneering family in this part of our country.
This is a young reader book about a little girl named Hazel Weston who lives with her family in the Imnaha Canyon of Wallowa County, Oregon. Hazel's grandparents were some of the very first settlers in this rugged remote area. The author tells the story of Hazel as she grows "Big Enough" to become the water girl during haying season on her Daddy's ranch and then as she starts school in the fall. A mean old ram, a vicious eagle, crazy turkeys and fishing Indians are some of the obstacles in Hazel's path as she makes her way to and from school. A treacherous winter time trip up the canyon and to the town of Joseph scares the whole family and they begin to talk about the promise of a green and fertile valley farther west. Will they find it?
This is a true story and I so enjoyed it. I grew up just a bit down the road from the area where this story takes place and my parents grew up in Wallowa County so I was really delighted to find this wonderful story.
