Rate this book
Boy meets girl. Girl falls for boy. Then girl gets thrown through time to a country on the brink of war . . .

Present day

It should be the happiest day of Sarah Yates’s life.

She’s walking down the aisle, about to say ‘I do’ to a future with her true love, John. But she blinks and opens her eyes to 1939.

Because Sarah and John were never going to be an ordinary couple. They’re time travellers, and Sarah is a Stitch — she’s tasked with sewing up holes in time throughout history to save endless innocent lives.

And today of all days, she’s been unexpectedly thrown into the past.

There she meets Veronica, a woman also destined to become a Stitch. But unlike Sarah, she’s less than pleased about it.

It’s clear that their destinies are intertwined. But how? Sarah's been sent to the past with no clear mission. And if she can’t work out why she’s been sent back in time, she’ll never get back to her happy ending.

The past and present are beginning to collide. But can Sarah fight for a future with the love of her life, or will time tear them apart . . . for good?

Amanda James (aka Mandy) was born in Sheffield and now lives in Cornwall with her husband and a cat. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, singing, and spending lots of time with her grandchildren. She also admits to spending far too much time chatting on Twitter and Facebook! Amanda feels most at home walking on the beach and making plots up in her head. A fair amount of these have made it onto paper, and been turned into books.

I can easily see why this series is Mandy’s favourite series. You meet Sarah and John and you just instantly fall in love with them and this mysterious time-travelling life they lead!

Following a few short months after A Stitch in Time, we are meeting Sarah and John at a very important part of their life. Life has settled after the dramatic events from the first book, and they are settling into a new rhythm. However, it seems destiny has other ideas and this time not even the spindly ones can control the travelling! When we do learn what is causing the disruption you can’t help but have a small leap of joy. But don’t let it fool you, because disruption and a lot of it, is what lies in store for Sarah.

One thing I did love about this book is Veronica Ratchet, she is a blinking hoot. What a character! Meeting her in 1939 Southampton, in a town which was one of the worst-hit during the war….you know everything will be fine won’t it, right? … Right???

Veronica is new to stitching and things do not go to plan, somehow Sarah is dragged along into what makes the Cross Stitch. The explanation behind the theory of a Cross Stitch is fascinating and so well done. Yet, this chance meeting entwines their lives together forever and I loved how everything works out. What I love about these is that although we know this doesn’t happen, it is explained to us in a way in which…it could happen! But it’s not true is it…is it?

The descriptive writing in this tale will have you believing you are in 1939 Southampton surviving the war, 1979 Bristol in the punk rock era or in 1966 Topeka with a raging Tornado on its way to you! You can smell the fires, you hear the wind, you feel the grit of the sand. It is as if you are there.

I really hope and pray there is a way that we get can the third book, because even though the book is all nicely tied up there is still so much to the story. So much more and plus I want to learn more about Esme and Harry! Cross Stitch is a story that flows with no words wasted and before you know it, you’ve reached the end! I am still not happy about this! I didn’t want it to end so quickly. So many threads have not been stitched up (sorry couldn’t resist!) and I yearn to know more. But if it does mean the end, I will riot but secondly, it still leaves me with the warm and fuzzies….but I still want the next book.

Think: A Hallmark movie meets time travel

The theory that the past, present and potential future is intricately intertwined plays out in book two of the Needle and Stitch time traveler series. Without giving spoilers, when Sarah makes more than a handful of trips in time—all unexpected and not necessarily desired—the people she meets interlink in ways she’d never thought to predict.

This book is for lovers of time travel romance who like history and prefer superficial writing in the romance department. Think: A Hallmark movie meets time travel. The ‘problems’ Sarah and John face seem more manufactured than anything. Their love making scenes are mechanical at best. But the trips in time are wonderfully anchored in realistic day-to-day life of the time. An enjoyable read overall.

Special people discover they are blessed with talents that help themselves and others if they try

I have always enjoyed time travel plots, this one has a new element allowing extended families to use special abilities to correct errors in timelines. The author does not Explain how time frames are chosen for events to be repaired and other groups are controlling what times to correct or leave alone.

This is a sequel to A Stitch In Time, which was from the Choc Lit stable. A nice easy & relaxing read. Where we met ' a stitch' named Sarah & 'a needle' named John. We're still following Sarah & Johns' story. This book is better than the first & involves more time travel & more involvment with other family characters. A real good read & the author has room to write a follow-up to this book. Here's hoping!

A different take on Time Travel

Really enjoyed both books no. 1 & 2. I like that the author spent minimum time bring people up to date in Book 2 and gave the readers more story.

The characters were likable and I enjoyed the plots twists and turns with an ultimate surprise. I’m not into revealing anything. I hope there will be more books.

Stitch isn’t sewing

Entertaining book about time travel, presented very differently than the other books. In and fix the issue, out the next second. Quirky characters, Great Britain teachers, newly-weds…..and plenty of mix-ups. Enjoyable read!

more Sarah & John, please!

I love this series. my only regret is that there isn’t more Sarah & John — or at least their twins’ adventures. I think it would be awesome to have them get into the biz as teens & cross paths w/ their mum.

ReRd. Character skews off, adds humanity? ChocLit has warm fireside list. If wedding is happy end, where goes sequel?
John was reliable until pregnant surprise, hard time trip left Sarah alone again. Both are beautiful. Trips, Trout return.

Back in March 2013, I reviewed A Stitch In Time by Amanda James and made no secret of how much I enjoyed it - great fun, the product of an exceptional imagination, highly original, and a book that left me with a smile on my face. After a brief detour to produce the equally excellent - but very different - Somewhere Beyond The Sea, the author is back with a second book in the Time Traveller series, Cross Stitch. Published for Kindle by Choc Lit on 9 December, I'm delighted to report that I loved it every bit as much as the first.

This book takes up the story of Sarah (a Stitch) and John (a Needle), joining them as they prepare for their wedding - the controllers (the Spindly Ones) have made an exception for them, not wiped their memories, and they're preparing for a happy future. But there's a small cloud over their happiness - Sarah has agreed to continue working as a Stitch in Time, repairing problems in the past that can affect the future - and her first mission happens on her wedding day. I won't spoil the book for others by describing the missions, but there's some vivid historical detail around (among others) Second World War Southampton, 1960s and 1970s Britain and some quite perfect links to characters we met in the earlier book.

At the centre of it all is Sarah's quite lovely relationship with John - complete with all the obvious problems caused by Sarah's disappearance, and they develop into a couple you really care about. But there's a new character introduced in this book in the magnificent Veronica Ratchet - a Stitch from an earlier time with whom Sarah's travels become inextricably linked. She's wonderfully drawn - there are some particularly entertaining exchanges as Veronica remains a product of her time an upbringing at the most inappropriate times, and her interactions with feisty Sarah are ever so well written. She becomes a more fully rounded character as the book progresses, and there's a beautiful scene near the end of the book... no, I'm not saying more, you need to read the book!

As entertaining and tongue in cheek as the earlier book, full of some really clever and original ideas, and exceptionally readable and well-written, I'd recommend Cross Stitch most highly as an escapist and fun read, but one with a real heart. I really loved it.

I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I have to be honest I didn't like this novel as much as the previous novel A Stitch in Time. Whilst there were less irritations (in the first book many old sayings apparently originated from actual events involving Needlers and Stitches).

Sarah is a Stitch which means she goes back in time to save someone and prevent history from unravelling. Her soon to be husband John is a Needler, they act as assistants/handlers for Stitches. Ordinarily Stitches only undertake three missions but in the first book Sarah got into trouble, John defied the Powers That Be who govern time travel and, in exchange for reversing a terrible punishment inflicted on John, Sarah agreed to continue stitching beyond her three trips.

Sarah and John are preparing for their big day when Sarah takes an unannounced time travelling trip back to 1939. However, this time her body doesn't vanish with her. John and her family think she has fainted and are beside themselves.

When Sarah gets to 1939 she meets a woman who is supposed to become a Stitch too, but Veronica is too scared. Soon Sarah, Veronica and John are variously travelling to the World Cup final, punk-era London and other points in time whilst also getting married and discovering just why Sarah's time travelling has been out of whack and confusing even the Powers That Be (or Spindlies as Sarah calls them).

The reason I didn't like this book as much as the first is the authorial voice. I felt as though this was a basic history class made more fun through adventure stories than a novel. In fact, I did wonder whether this was intended as a novel for teenagers although the age of Sarah and John seemed to preclude that. It doesn't surprise me in the least that Amanda James is a teacher.

Another issue with the authorial voice is that both Sarah and John 'sounded' like much older people. I kept expecting John to get his pipe and slippers out at any moment. Amanda James also writes as if she is telling a story out loud at times, or as though Sarah was thinking out loud, which I found kind of off-putting.

I guess I just didn't like Sarah and John as much in this book as I did in the preceding book although the time travels were fun - much more in recent history than most time travel novels which is a nice change.

Cross Stitch is the sequel to A Stitch in Time and while there is some backstory in Cross Stitch, to experience the uniqueness of the plot I would recommend you also read A Stitch in Time.

Usually receiving a warning before travelling in time, on her wedding day Sarah receives no warning at all. This isn’t the only thing that is different (but I can’t say why – no spoilers!).

While those at home are very concerned, Sarah has travelled back to 1939 and Veronica Roth.

Veronica plays a key part in the story. I really enjoyed her character development … we see her grow from lack of confidence and fear into quite a spectacular woman. Telling lies to get into the school where Sarah teaches results in mayhem in the classroom … and this isn’t the only chaos she causes in Sarah’s life!

One of the choices that Sarah makes causes John to be angry (yes easy going John can be a monster when he’s fighting for what he believes in) and their relationship hits a rocky time. I agreed with both their opposing views so wouldn’t have made a good mediator, unlike John’s dad Harry.

It’s not only their relationship under the spotlight in Cross Stitch, two more important people share a surprise too. The banter had me grinning.

There’s intrigue with John’s sister Lucy and her husband Corbin. I loved how this fitted in with the plot.

Totally involved with this story, I read it quickly - I couldn’t wait to see where Sarah would go next, the purpose of her being there or even if she would come back.

I loved the idea of the ‘Cross Stitch’ and how unpredictable time travel was (and the reason behind it!). It’s hard to write a review where you really want to share something but you know that if you do, you’ll give a spoiler …

Tension from the challenges faced on the time travel journeys, friendship, family and romance have made this a totally absorbing read for me.

Highly recommended if you like your romances with something different!

Amanda James, you are a genius :)

I would like to thank the publishers for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

It's been a couple of years since I read 'A Stitch in Time', so I made the decision to re-read the first book before moving onto 'Cross Stitch'. In doing so, I've had the most wonderful couple of days reimersing myself in John and Sarah's world, laughing along with their banter, and nervously witnessing Sarah's trips to the past. I'd definitely recommend making a reading marathon out of the two books one after the other, as you just become a part of the Stitch and Needler world, and I was more than happy to get lost in it.

Cross Stitch had the same essence to 'A Stitch in Time', a brilliant underlying level of humour, and a sweet tenderness that tugged at my heartstrings. I loved seeing John and Sarah in their happily ever after, and how Sarah's decision to continuing stitching at the end of Book 1, influenced her relationship with John throughout Book 2.

I particularly loved Veronica. A brilliant portrayal of a WWII teacher, Veronica was gutsy, stubborn and more than a little strict. The stark contrast between her and Sarah's relationship with students was great to see, and really showed how different education has changed in the last seventy years! Veronica's character development was also spectacular, seeing first hand the experience that another Stitch had when they started their life-style was really wonderful, and I loved seeing how they saved people in a way that was natural to them; Sarah with a quick initiative, and Veronica with a no-nonsense manner.

Amanda James really packed the emotion into 'Cross Stitch', and there are some brilliant scenes where we see how Sarah isn't as unaffected with her trips to the past as she may always show. Her desperation to have a child, and her pain at leaving having to leave Artie in the previous book, all make an appearance here too, which allows for some great development into her character and in her relationship with John.

Gorgeously romantic, 'Cross Stitch' was everything I hoped for in a sequel to 'A Stitch in Time'.

5 Stars!

I am not a huge fan of fantasy books, with the exception of Narnia, Harry Potter and Terry Pratchett. I much prefer my books to be based firmly in reality. But a couple of years ago I came across A Stitch in Time and really enjoyed it. So I was very pleased to see that Amanda James has written this sequel where we get to meet Sarah Yates and John Needler again. Sarah is a stitch, a time traveller who goes into the past to sew holes and save a life. For every life she saves, two more are saved. Stitches are supposed to save three people, which works out as nine lives altogether hence the phrase a stitch in time saves nine. John is a Needle - he finds stitches and send them on their missions. In the first book, Sarah and John fall in love, completely against the rules, and at the beginning of Cross Stitch we join them on their wedding day.

The wedding day isn't as happy as you might hope though as Sarah is unexpectedly whisked back in time. Usually, a stitch knows about a mission in advance. In this book, a complication means that Sarah is taken back in time several times. She meets Veronica Ratchet a school teacher, who is a wonderful character and just as spiky and crotchety as her name suggests! She is also a stitch, although a reluctant one when we first meet her in Southampton in 1939. It is unusual for two stitches to be together and this causes problems - a cross stitch! I enjoyed getting to know more about Sarah and John's families this time, especially John's kind and wise dad Harry.

I really enjoyed Cross Stitch - it was entertaining, light hearted and funny. Sarah and John feel like real people, despite their time-travelling abilities and their love for each other shines through. There is a rocky patch in the middle of the story where I was a bit worried for them but I needn't have worried. As with all ChocLit novels, this book left me with a happy smile on my face and a hope that Amanda James is planning a third in her time traveller series.

So this is the second book I have read by this author and it did not disappoint. This book leads on from A Stitch in Time.

We enter Sarah Yates' world again in this book. I did wonder how this book could be different from the first one, would it be more of Sarah's adventures which would have been fine as I thoroughly enjoyed them in the first book. Ms. James introduced an unexpected complication into this book when Sarah meets a woman in 1930's London who makes her life and her time travelling more complex. Their destiny's are entwined and woven beautifully together.

Another fantastic read. Hope you are writing Ms. James I want more.

This is a romance with a difference- it involves time travel. The travelling doesn’t always go as expected which adds extra interest!
Sarah and John are marrying- but will the time travelling keep them apart? It’s fascinating to visit all the different eras and get a feel for the time.
Sarah is a ‘stitch’- which is a traveller who saves lives in the past. She meets another ‘stitch’ in 1939, which isn’t supposed to happen. Veronica was a fascinating character.
It was a very interesting concept and I would be keen to read more in the series
With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

It should be the happiest day of her life. Despite past heartache, Sarah Yates is finally marrying her true love, John Needler. But Sarah and John can’t pretend they’re an ordinary couple. They’re time travellers and where time travel is involved, nothing runs smoothly.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first, A Stitch in Time, although I began to feel somewhat dizzy with the to-ing and fro-ing of the time travel to several different times and places. There is a good sense of time and place here again, and clearly an understanding of the historical periods and cultures. Amanda James evokes a strong sense of each historical location. A lovely summer holiday read.

Loved this book - it follows the adventures of Sarah and John in their time travelling. A wonderful new character, Veronica, is also introduced - in quite a startling manner!

I enjoyed A Stitch in Time and have been looking forward to this book. I certainly wasn't disappointed. The relationship between John and Sarah changes slightly as they adapt to new circumstances. I'll say no more on that!

I felt the relationships within the families were possibly tidied up a little too well but I'm delighted that the ending is such that another book is more than possible!

Highly recommend

Love Choc-Lit books. Would advise that you read Stitch in Time before starting this sequel though as it carries on with Sarah and John's story. Absolute chaos ensues when Veronica is thrown into the mix. These timeslip stories from Amanda James are just so different from any timeslip storylines I have read previously. Please please Amanda can we persuade you to carry on with the series. How about the twins story next.
