Sue Ransom, the author of the Small Blue Thing series, is based near Chichester in the UK. She used to have a completely different life, but she wrote her first novel as a birthday present for her daughter, and things snowballed from there. Four published books later, she is now a full time writer.
Please bear in mind that this is the third and final book in the trilogy and therefore the review may contain spoilers for the previous books.
Scattering Like Light picks straight up where Perfectly Reflected leaves the story. The main focus being the power the amulet wields and how Alex is able to use it. Nice recaps are placed throughout the narrative to reinforce key elements of the plot. Although I would recommend that you read the entire series it isn't absolutely necessary in order to be able to follow the story-line
The change of location rejuvenated the imagery, providing a pleasant interlude for both reader and Alex. The introduction of an alternative love interest for Alex in the form of Max gave the story an added realistic element. Alex's best friend, Grace, embodies the voice of reason and logic, stating precisely the benefits of a 'real' relationship, 'healthier' in many respects. Re-enforced later in the plot by Catherine's twisted argument.
I actually really adored Max, fully empathizing with Alex's guilt at being drawn to him. Not only hot but deep down a total geek *swoon* plus he was so nice.I really could see Max and Alex together. Poor Callum.
The plight of the dirges is poignantly portrayed. The full extent of their misery revealed causing conflicting emotions as to whether people should live in suffering or helped to attain peace. A powerful concept compassionately explored within the plot.
There are a number of unexpected twists to the action that took the story to a completely unexpected direction, the threads of the plot coming together beautifully. The ending was simply that beautiful. The additional information regarding the history of the amulet in the prologue provided great insight and rounded of the end of the trilogy perfectly.
Hooooollyyyy COW! This book, this series is so AMAZING! How come barely anyone has reviewed these or rated them, seriously they are soooooooo good!!
I don't have to much to write but this is absolutely great, the characters, the story line, confusing yet in the end it all unravels so well. S.C. Ransom is very talented.
Do you love interesting topics and romance mixed well you will love this book, I 1oo% recommend it!
my favourite books from when i was a preteen to young teenager! i reread them quite a few times and always loved them - the trilogy always made me happy to read and immersed me in the story and to me that counts as a 5 star book :))
Scattering like light is the final book in the small blue thing trilogy and by far the best with regards to certain aspects. If you haven't read this trilogy, I highly recommend it. It is a sweet and lovely story about a girl who finds a bracelet in the Thames and finds herself able to communicate with a spirit - Dirge - who must steal the happy memories of strangers in order to stave of madness. Finally Alex thinks she may have a chance to save Callum, the boy she loves from his horrible fate. A new character is introduced - Max - who makes Alex think long and hard about her future relationship with Callum. If she can't save him then how can they be together? I know some readers may have been displeased with Max but I thought he was necessary for Alex to really question her feelings and relationship with Callum. I think that their relationship became all the more stronger.
There are some answers! Yay. Some of the plot twists caught me completely off guard which was certainly a surprise because this is a generally predictable kind of series. I think readers will be satisfied. I was sad to see the end of this series as I had really come to love Alex and Callum. I'm pleased with the way it ended.
The final instalment in the small blue thing series wraps things up in a sweet slightly predictable way (but I’m a sucker for a happy ending anyway).
A small yet unexplained twist leads our protagonists to unravel the mystery of Callum and Catherine ending up in the Thames and becoming Dirges but everything is wrapped up quite nicely in the end.
I won’t lie, it wasn’t anything special but it was a lovely conclusion to the trilogy. As with the other books in this series it kept you gripped and reached a satisfying end.
There was interesting vocabulary yet the story was still easy to follow, especially if you have read the previous 2 books (I wouldn’t even say you necessarily need context as S.C Ransom explains backstory where it is needed in a compact but informative manner).
My quote from this book is: “Killing Callum was always bittersweet: his gentle touch filled me with longing for more; more that we couldn’t possible have.”
I think it sums up the beauty and longing of the series beautifully.
Thanks again Sue for allowing me to relive my favourite series from when i was younger and feel the yearning and love between Alex and Callum all over again <3
Okay. I took a long time deciding wether to put 3 or 4 stars as the rating. I put 4 to be nice bu my true rating is 3.7. Hehehe. Anyway, back to the book and what I think of it. I liked it. The first is better and i cant say much bout the second because i skipped it. Not entirely my fault but the library had books 1 and 3 but not 2 and I wanted to know so badly if they work out so yeah. Since I didnt read #2 i got confused at bits and had to catch up but since s.c. explained everything, i was good. THANK YOU S.C.! Anyway, i hate charlotte. I wish she'd just die. Sorry but its what I feel. And then Max. Yeah, he sound hot and all bit I just wanted him to leave! Im serious. And Veronica... I was like fighting with myself if I should believe her or not... Oh well can Say anything wlse bout her other wise ill be a spoiler. Hehehe. And btw, i love the ending. Everything I wanted came true!
And the extra story, god! I lovrd it. I always wanted to know what happened to start all this but thanks to s.c. I am answered! Yay!
This is the third and final book in the Small Blue Thing series and it didn't disappoint.
The book starts right after where the second book finished which is great as the reader will know everything that has just happened and will be able to follow along with the story straight away. I liked the introduction of the new character (Max) as it added another possibility for the plot and one of my favourite parts of S.C. Ransom's writing is her characters. It easy to tell that she puts a greta deal of effort into planning what the characters will be like and how they are important to the story.
One thing i didn't like about the book was that all the way through the story it kept mentioning things that had happened in the last two books. If that had only happened in the first half of the story (just to recap what had happened and refresh the readers memory) it wouldn't have been so bad, but to keep being told things you already know throughout the WHOLE BOOK is a bit annoying.
This is a great story with memorable characters and a million plot twists that make the book what it is.
Well the ending wasn't satisfying to me, i mean, WHAT HAPPENED THEN??! I want more, what happened to Catherine and would Alex and Calum be together or life complications will happen as usual, will she regret the whole thing or she's satisfied that she is finally able to see and talk to Calum properly. OMMGG I REALLY WANT MORE I'm so sad for Olivia though, i think she really wanted to be a dirge, she didn't mind it i suppose Anywayyyy, it was really heart warning that Calum survived the whole thing and I truly hope he and Alex could make it forever. If Calum didn't survived i really wished Alex to be with Max, i loved the guy people, I imagined his tan and abs
It was, amazing. I picked up the story quickly Perfectly reflected, as i havent read it for quite a long time. I read it really quickly, and absorbed really into the story. It went up and down constantly. I'm just really glad in the end that Alex and Callum got to be together, both of them in the real world ^^
This book was absolutely fabulous. Honestly, after I read the first two books, I was just like "meh, i know what happens next, whatever." But that wasn't the case. It honestly surprised me. The ending was something I didn't expect, and I just sat there reading over the book as soon as I had finished. Perfection.
This is one of the best books that I’ve read! I’m a proper cheesy reader, love a good romance fantasy; boy meets girl; boy falls in love with girl; boy turns out to be a ghost.. oooooo... Usually when I read a series you get kinda bored by the start of book 3 but I enjoyed every single one. They all had a different element to them. Simple, lovely romance fantasy novel ❤️

Love the back story behind the bracelets although I believe the ending was a bit rushed. I wish there was an extra chapter about Alex's family and Max regarding how her boyfriend is her from 'Venezuela' moving to Kent. Finished at 2:50 in the morning. Read it in one go.
