The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas

Rate this book
Brought to you by Penguin.

No stockings, no gifts, no tinsel and no tree—has Christmas been cancelled?

It's mid-December and for the fifth year in a row, there is little sign of the festive season in the Sullivan family's home. That is until a mysterious someone starts sending strange gifts to widower Henry and his two children.

First, a small-beaked and feathered face pokes its head out from between the branches of a pear tree. Before they know it, the Sullivan's home is full of boisterous animals and house guests, all demanding their attention.

The next twelve days turn the Sullivan family's lives upside down in ways they never could have imagined. And even though this Christmas will be messy, it may be just the gift their family needs.

This was such a funny little read. Everyone knows the song The Twelve Days of Christmas. Well, imagine those gifts coming every day! That's exactly what happens to the Sullivan family. They receive gifts relating to the song...animals, people, and yes, even the five golden rings. What an epic, madcap adventure that turns out to be, especially for a family that has been suffering for the last five years.

Henry Sullivan lost his wife five years ago and hasn't allowed anything Christmas since her death, even though he has two children, Ella, 12 and Will, 14. What ends up happening turns out to be the best possible turnaround for Henry and his kin. Who is sending these gifts, and more importantly, why? Well, you will have to read the book to find out, but trust me, it is worth it. This was such a fun, quick read and pure Christmas magic.

This book just isn't one that appeals to me. I found it to be too long, too sappy, and it requires more than just a stretch of the imagination. The story was unbelievable and unrealistic. I don't mind reading some fantasy or magical realism, but I like books to be semi-believable. I know it's gotten quite a few good reviews, but for me, it is just overdone.

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me.. we all know how this goes.

Henry is still deeply struggling following the loss of his beloved wife Katie several years ago. His children Will and Ella sign him up to an online dating site and they get a response from Ms Truelove. I’ll say no more lest I spoil the fun, games and frolics.

What a wild, magical, mad caper full of creative havoc. I hoot, snort, chortle, guffaw, howl, titter, giggle, chuckle and cackle my way through the clever fun book. The setting is Deptford, London and the humour feels very British so well played Mr Patterson. The ending is a bit sugar sweet but I like it. Great characters and those kids are something else!!

This has got very mixed reviews but the humour was very much on my wavelength!

Catching up…

I’m a few holiday days late for this one…

But…Felt I still needed to share a simple quick review of it. We typically know James Patterson for his spy or police procedural mysteries…

As well as…Him writing all his stories with a variety of co-authors.

And…This one is no different, in that his co-author is Tad Safran. Safran has written for TV, film, podcasts, newspapers and books.

This story uses the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” as the basis for the tale.

And…For the Sullivan family who is suffering a loss, receiving gifts everyday relating to the song…animals, people, and even 5 golden rings, creates quite a cute, somewhat silly at times; and, charming little story.

The questions is…Who is sending these gifts and why?

If you are still looking for some Christmas magic, turn these pages for a delightful family drama and little mystery reading experience.

Oh…

And even with its joyous humor, I believe you will need some Kleenex, too.

At the beginning I was skeptical & was going to quit reading, however, I kept reading & was I ever glad. It turned out to be a very clever rendition of what “Truelove” can accomplish & to what lengths one must go to achieve the desired results! I finished it in one day, and I am very glad I stuck with it. Might appear Zany, but Definitely worthy of reading between the lines to achieve the meaning of “Truelove”.

This was a poor attempt at humor. A take on a joke that’s going around about the 12 days of Christmas. The worst book I’ve ever Read by James Patterson. Don’t waste your time on it

Always willing to explore new James Patterson collaborations, I gladly reached for this piece. With the holiday season upon us, I thought that I would add something to my reading collection. Tad Safran joins Patterson with this modern version of a long-sung piece about the Christmas season. Adding some intrigue and a little humour to the events of multiple gifts, they help the reader feel fully ensconced with the holidays and the importance of the season. A great piece that surprised me with how thoroughly I enjoyed it.

It is a long-spoken tradition in the Sullivan household that Christmas is for others to celebrate. Will and Ella have had to suffer through this, as their father, Henry, has been left feeling the pain of missing his wife. There is nothing to show the holidays are around the corner, as the Sullivans have no tree, no decorations, and certainly, no presents.

Will and Ella work to change that by trying to match their father up with someone on a dating site. When Henry comes upon them, he curtails this before the children can launch the profile. All the children want is someone to make their father happy, but Henry insists that he only wishes to be left alone.

While the profile is not ‘live’, Henry receives a message from someone who goes by the name of ‘True Love’, insisting that he is someone special. Once gifts begin to arrive, this angers Henry and leaves the children flummoxed. These are not typical gifts, but rather plants, fowl, and other very unique items. Will and Ella soon draw the parallel between the gifts and the twelve days leading up to Christmas, though Henry is more concerned with who is sending the gifts, going so far as to threaten legal action. As the gifts keep multiplying, the Sullivans have to reflect on the season, the gift-giver, and what it all means. Things may not be typical or traditional, but something is going on, leaving the Sullivans to think more about the holidays, their family situation, and the meaning of Christmas.

I have had a love/hate relationship with James Patterson. This usually depends on the collaborator and how much freedom said author is given in crafting the story. This piece was a fabulous change of pace and holiday-themed as well. Tad Safran does a masterful job at keeping things moving and on the right track. With a Christmas-themed story that gets to the heart of the season, the authors show how a little love and a great deal of patience can go a long way. The story is built on some great themes and develops well as it progresses. Patterson and Safran keep the reader enticed with short chapters, packed with great development and some humour to lighten the mood.

The characters in the piece help add depth and something special to the story. I enjoyed how there was a great contrast between all three central characters. Ella is trying to define herself, Will is forced to defy temptation, and Henry must overcome the loss of his wife. The authors developed these three characters well, which offers the reader something exciting to follow. The use of a mysterious gift giver provides even more flavour the story at the same time.

While one could look for plot twists in this piece, I prefer to find some of the great surprises that arise throughout the gift giving. ‘True Love’ has a real sense of humour in the fights that arise, and the blowback from these gifts is also highly entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well things flowed and how the themes of the story arose with ease as the piece progressed. While being pleasantly surprised as to how effective the piece turned out to be, I am just as perplexed that this was a James Patterson collaboration. Well done and so much fun to read!

Kudos, Messrs. Paterson and Safran, for a great holiday piece that left me smiling. I hope others grab this book and enjoy a warming feeling this holiday season.

Quick, sappy holiday story that brings a family back together. Loved it. Christmas is about suspending reality...

I connected more with the kids. But understood where the dad was coming from.... my ONLY issue, if you can call it that, was this is 5 years later. The kids felt willful and are older, so what was to stop them from still celebrating or start back up after a couple of years?

Mini spoiler, so stop reading if you want to go in pure:

About 2/3ds of the way through I figured out who was behind it all.

I would not have read this if it wasn’t a book club book, and I’m not sure I would have finished it if I didn’t feel obligated

This was a completely adequate book. There was technically nothing wrong with it. It was just there. The characters didn’t have enough story or development and the overall storyline just didn’t do it for me. The ending felt.. rushed and incomplete.

I probably could have just listened to the song the Twelve Days of Christmas and felt like that was sufficient.

Overall, this was a very blah book for me.

There are plenty of other holiday reads I would recommend if you want to feel merry.

Okay, the professional reviews on this one were pretty positive, so I thought I would give it a shot since my spouse thinks I hate Christmas and I thought my reading this in October would impress her since I love Halloween and spooky stuff. It didn’t work, and I wound up wasting time on this serviceable trifle. It had its charming moments, and I’m sure it will make a forgettable enough TV movie one day.

My major beef is the two white authors have set this story in Harlem, which means nothing to the story. They toss off a mention of the Apollo Theater and a tossed-off comment about hipster stores coming and going constantly. I was a little unclear about the race of the central family, but I was troubled by the son Will getting involved in crime to impress his new “friends” who are using him and are definitely coded as Black. They have nicknames that two out-of-touch white guys definitely came up with, and they are introduced as being into “beanie hats and baggy pants,” which is a lazy stereotype at best. This story did not need to be set in Harlem (other than a Deus ex ordinance later) nor involve troubling racial connotations, especially given Patterson’s recent comment and his friendship with Bill Clinton who famously kicked off (or at least exacerbated) Harlem’s gentrification by having offices there. I’m not saying Patterson can’t tell Black stories, but I’m not sure he should. He can mentor, promote, and publish Black authors and their stories all day every day. I’m just not sure he is the correct person to tell these stories, and it seems like he resents BIPOC authors being published more these days.

And if the central family is white, that comes with its own problems because it should mean something that they live in a historically Black part of NYC. How do they fit into the tapestry of this community?

I wouldn’t care about this as much if the story was set just about anywhere else. This story cannot support the weight of being set in Harlem.

Either have something to say about the current state and/or history of a place with as rich and fraught a history as Harlem or don’t set your story there. Will could easily be getting into trouble on his own or getting into non-criminal trouble for his new friends. He doesn’t have to be helping Black kids shoplift and perpetuating the Black criminals in Harlem trope.

Regardless, Chinua Hawk does a fantastic job performing this story, and I can recommend the audiobook highly if you want to give this book a try.

The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas by James Patterson. What happens when your kids get on a dating site to find a date for dad during Christmas? Well let me introduce you to the 12 days of Christmas literally. This is a hilarious book that becomes a mystery of who is behind the 12 Turtle Doves? Who sent those rings? Stop this non-sen…oops excuse the plop of poop! Patterson! What a creative mind of fun!

This was a super cute tale of one family's journey in rediscovering the meaning of love and Christmas. Despite the claims of other reviewers, this is in no way going to be the next great Christmas story, but if you take it for what it is, you'll probably enjoy the sweetness of it.

Will and Ella Sullivan are desperate to bring Christmas back to their home after losing their mother five years ago. Their father, Henry, has banished all things joyful in his sorrow and grief.

The two kids enlist a dating site to make a match for their dad, in hopes of making him cheerful again. The site leads them to one Ms. Truelove, who, you guessed it, begins sending them all the wonderful joyous gifts of the beloved 12 Days of Christmas song! The results are both extremely hilarious and heartwarming.

At the end of the twelve days, when the identity of Ms. Truelove is revealed, it isn't a huge shocking twist, but more of a sweet surprise that will warm your heart for the holiday!

I’m not a Patterson fan, especially after his remarks about how tough it is for middle aged white men (cry me a river!). But this book was a fun holiday read. I keep trying to find out more about Tad Safran, the coauthor (ghost writer?), but he’s a mystery. Anyway, I think we always knew that those gifts that “my true love gave to me” would be a problem for the recipient!

I think Charles Dickens does not have to move over as our favourite story teller at least not for this sappy senseless book. I have a hard time believing that James Patterson had anything to do with this book. I do not know why he keeps putting his name on books he obviously did not write. He needs to protect his reputation and stop harming it with this kind of bad books.

This book was truly far fetched and awful. “Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas” is one of my favorite books by Patterson and I’ve enjoyed his other stand alone ones but this was just brutal. It feels like he’s just slapping his name in the cover for sales and letting his coauthor take over.
