Monsters Mayhem & Misfits #1

Monsters Mayhem & Misfits

Rate this book
When Josh Underwood is thrown through a wormhole and lands on an unfamiliar world, he is immediately attacked by flesh-eating worms and snarling wolves.

He has one huge advantage. A ring sits on his finger, but it's no ordinary ring. It's alien tech designed to improve its host’s strength, speed, agility, durability and combat instinct. Not all boons are infinitely wondrous. This tech has to understand what Josh needs for it to evolve, and time is of the essence.

An evil force is rising in Mythelore and threatening not only the land’s entire way of life but also Josh’s new companions—the lovely Arabella, Elowen, the wildly sexy archaeologist, and Cassandra, a sassy witch with no understanding of her true powers.

Only one question Will Josh’s power grow in time to save them?

Ugh

Disappointed, I did have high hopes for this, because the general premise sounded great, but the execution just left too much to be desired. Shoddy character interactions with breakneck relationship building, no subtlety in the dialogue (there was no point in having an inner monologue for the MC he just blurted out everything he thought), not to mention inconsistencies (at one point the MC tries to avoid mentioning that he’s from space, but then mentions planets a chapter later to characters in a third world).

It wasn’t all bad, threw in an extra star because I did really like the initial premise and right up until the MC meets other people on the new world it was quite good, but I just couldn’t stand the character interaction after that and stopped at the 20% mark. Editing was also quite good from what I did get through.

Pretty enjoyable

The MC transitions from a high tech universe to a medieval magical universe. He meets his future teammates and they visit a nearby city for a monster hunting contract. Along the way, the MC must level up, barely surviving the trials he encounters. Once they get to the city they find that there are plots within schemes and everyone is other than they appear to be. The MC also starts building his harem as they try to figure out whats going on and how to survive.

The story was interesting with enough worldbuilding to keep everything together. The MC has not overcome his tendency to jump into a fray before realizing what he's gotten himself into. Since that s common issue with prople that quite relatable. I was relieved that the MC had to practice skills to level and had to get instruction from an arms master to become proficient. Even then, he couldn't one-shot the main villains like he did their minions.

All told, the characters were interesting, not being who they first appeared to be, but having more depth. There were other fantasy species, namely elves, but so far they are basically isolationists with pointy ears rather than being an alien-fantasy species. The creativity of the stone colossus, the leyline network and the theorized monster summoning rituals were interesting concepts. I found the sunlight vs moonlight concept to be intriguing. An enjoyable book in general.

two because the writing is decent. But the mc and plot aren't enough for me to give this a chance, made it %15 before lost interest completely. Another one of the needing to constantly remind you how attractive someone is in the most uncreative unsubtle ways possible, doesn't help the mc is a dudebro with a seemingly limited vocab. His brain stops working everything he gets a glimpse of the fmc.

I've read enough other works that Sloss was involved with to not have much faith the story is about the mc's growth as a person or that this won't end up being a waste of time.

It's a shame because it seems like the author is experienced.

I don't know what it is about Marcus Sloss's books; they're complete nonsense and womanizing but I read them. They're quick reads with women being portrayed as big-breasted bimbos but again, I read them. In this particular gem *yes, sarcasm* the MC is a horny man who does nothing but fall in love at first sight while saying the first thing that comes into his head. The main female character was smart but lowered herself to his main wife and nothing more. Another character was made to feel as if here smarts could be portrayed as unattractive. Oy, yet I read these. What is says about me and not him. *face palm*

Fun OP romp

Good fun romp. Semi average guy from tech world/universe Enters magical world/universe with OP ring. The ring allows him to level up his stats it uses nanotech To improve his biology. Also hinted that it's learning magic So the future may allow more abilities. Fun story and a harem he's putting together a team of monster hunters. I'm sure the other shoe will drop with the ring As it seems that lovely is not the end of it's game. Either way we'll find out in the next set of books. Enjoyable.

DNF for me. Made it to 25% before I just couldn’t take it anymore. Characters were shallow and uninteresting, relationships felt sloppy, magic/tech system was poorly explained and barely used and overall it felt incredibly padded. Every opportunity to make the book tight and snappy was instead used to waste a page and a half of repetitive explanations or dialog that didn’t go anywhere or improve the world or story.

Overall, a good story. Our MC isn't just handed points for doing a couple pushups or running around the yard, he only gains abilities when his tech feels he is in danger. This makes even training much more serious since he has to face real weapons and magic. A good start and looking forward to more.

Better than expected

Alternate universe, SF, fantasy, monsters, LitRPG light, harem adult situations

Josh goes from an all tech society to one with magic in this first novel to a new series, learns something about the alien device he possesses, and find both love and people to depend upon. He the next two books and look forward to reading them. Enjoyed.

tons of fun

The storyline makes me envious. But I wouldn’t give for a ring of power that slowly made me stronger and every way possible overtime. The main character is a man who draws the attention of beautiful women and surrounds them with his love and protection. That’s something I can get behind.

Excellent Story

Josh is a man out of time and space...literally. With alien tech on his hand running from a hopeless battle in space he's been sent to another world , more primitive but where magic rules. Now he's a monster hunter with a harem of incredible women at his side. If you enjoy action, adventure and spice, you're going to love this book!

Fun read

Interesting take on the OPMC harem genre. Alien technology grants a leveling system, but its motivations are suspect. Stranded on an alien world where magic reigns, both the MC and the alien tech must adapt quickly as they face an opponent greater then even the locals have imagined. Fast paced and fun read.

A fun adventure

The cast of characters were captivating and grounded. Their relationships to one another also felt authentic. The world and its magical lore also felt consistently fun.

badly written

The story is very badly written with little to no narration or description. The dialogue between characters all sounds the same, no one has a unique personality. I couldn’t get past the first sixty pages before I gave up.

The plot was pretty decent, but the harem development was tons of cringe and eye-rolling. MC sure rebounded from his lost love hard by falling in love with 4 different girls in the span of a week. sigh.

Attention grabbing and laser focused fun

The story is invigorating and easily maintains the readers desire to learn and know more about the world within the book. The characters are lively, funny, and quickly become family. Very excited about reading Book 2!

nice book

The book is nice, it’s cute, sweet and we’ll get the job done if you’re bored and you need something to read. The action is OK. The connections between the characters are OK again as the title says it’s nice.

Mega cringe

This reads like someone prompted an AI to create a story, and specifically asked it to cater to neckbeards. Seriously, it's mind blowing something like this gets published.

Harem growing too fast

He has 6 women as of book 3. Harems jump the shark at about 4 imo. With a 10 book series this is kind of expected, but at this rate it will be 20 women by book 10. That's just work for both the reader and MC.

Great story

A new take on the hero in a new land. Bit of syfi, bit of fantasy a great story. I really like the it takes a team, not just 1 superhero. Look forward to the next book

Spicy LitRPG

Entertaining LitRPG with an OP MC. This is an isekai story with stats and a futuristic twist. There are polygamous relationships and detailed love scenes.
